Food Offered to Idols
1Now concerning[1] food offered to idols: we know that “all of us possess knowledge.” This “knowledge” puffs up, but love builds up. (Elç 15:29; Rom 14:3; Rom 15:14; 1 Ko 8:4; 1 Ko 8:7; 1 Ko 8:10; 1 Ko 13:4)2If anyone imagines that he knows something, he does not yet know as he ought to know. (1 Ko 3:18; 1 Ko 13:8; 1 Ko 13:12; Gal 6:3; 1 Ti 6:3)3But if anyone loves God, he is known by God.[2] (Çık 33:12; Çık 33:17; Yer 1:5; Nah 1:7; Gal 4:9; 2 Ti 2:19)4Therefore, as to the eating of food offered to idols, we know that “an idol has no real existence,” and that “there is no God but one.” (Yas 4:35; Yas 4:39; Yşa 41:24; Elç 14:15; 1 Ko 8:6; 1 Ko 10:19)5For although there may be so-called gods in heaven or on earth—as indeed there are many “gods” and many “lords”— (2 Se 2:4)6yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and through whom we exist. But some, through former association with idols, eat food as really offered to an idol, and their conscience, being weak, is defiled. (Rom 14:14; Rom 14:22; 1 Ko 10:25; 1 Ko 10:28)8Food will not commend us to God. We are no worse off if we do not eat, and no better off if we do. (Rom 14:17)9But take care that this right of yours does not somehow become a stumbling block to the weak. (Rom 14:1; Rom 14:21; 1 Ko 10:23; Gal 5:13)10For if anyone sees you who have knowledge eating[3] in an idol’s temple, will he not be encouraged,[4] if his conscience is weak, to eat food offered to idols?11And so by your knowledge this weak person is destroyed, the brother for whom Christ died. (Rom 14:15; Rom 14:20)12Thus, sinning against your brothers[5] and wounding their conscience when it is weak, you sin against Christ.
