1 Meryem ile kızkardeşi Marta'nın köyü olan Beytanya'dan Lazar adında bir adam hastalanmıştı. 2 Meryem, Rab'be güzel kokulu yağ sürüp saçlarıyla O'nun ayaklarını silen kadındı. Hasta Lazar ise Meryem'in kardeşiydi. 3 İki kızkardeş İsa'ya, ‹‹Rab, sevdiğin kişi hasta›› diye haber gönderdiler. 4 İsa bunu işitince, ‹‹Bu hastalık ölümle sonuçlanmayacak; Tanrı'nın yüceliğine, Tanrı Oğlu'nun yüceltilmesine hizmet edecek›› dedi. 5 İsa Marta'yı, kızkardeşini ve Lazar'ı severdi. 6-7 Bu nedenle, Lazar'ın hasta olduğunu duyunca bulunduğu yerde iki gün daha kaldıktan sonra öğrencilere, ‹‹Yahudiye'ye dönelim›› dedi. 8 Öğrenciler, ‹‹Rabbî›› dediler, ‹‹Yahudi yetkililer demin seni taşlamaya kalkıştılar. Yine oraya mı gidiyorsun?›› 9 İsa şu karşılığı verdi: ‹‹Günün on iki saati yok mu? Gündüz yürüyen sendelemez. Çünkü bu dünyanın ışığını görür. 10 Oysa gece yürüyen sendeler. Çünkü kendisinde ışık yoktur.›› 11 Bu sözleri söyledikten sonra, ‹‹Dostumuz Lazar uyudu›› diye ekledi, ‹‹Onu uyandırmaya gidiyorum.›› 12 Öğrenciler, ‹‹Ya Rab›› dediler, ‹‹Uyuduysa iyileşecektir.›› 13 İsa Lazar'ın ölümünden söz ediyordu, ama onlar olağan uykudan söz ettiğini sanmışlardı. 14 Bunun üzerine İsa açıkça, ‹‹Lazar öldü›› dedi. 15 ‹‹İman edesiniz diye, orada bulunmadığıma sizin için seviniyorum. Şimdi onun yanına gidelim.›› 16 ‹‹İkiz›› diye anılan Tomas öbür öğrencilere, ‹‹Biz de gidelim, O'nunla birlikte ölelim!›› dedi. 



17 İsa Beytanya'ya yaklaşınca Lazar'ın dört gündür mezarda olduğunu öğrendi. 18 Beytanya, Yeruşalim'e on beş ok atımı kadar uzaklıktaydı. 19 Birçok Yahudi, kardeşlerini yitiren Marta'yla Meryem'i avutmaya gelmişti. 20 Marta İsa'nın geldiğini duyunca O'nu karşılamaya çıktı, Meryem ise evde kaldı. 21 Marta İsa'ya, ‹‹Ya Rab›› dedi, ‹‹Burada olsaydın, kardeşim ölmezdi. 22 Şimdi bile, Tanrı'dan ne dilersen Tanrı'nın onu sana vereceğini biliyorum.›› 23 İsa, ‹‹Kardeşin dirilecektir›› dedi. 24 Marta, ‹‹Son gün, diriliş günü onun dirileceğini biliyorum›› dedi. 25 İsa ona, ‹‹Diriliş ve yaşam Ben'im›› dedi. ‹‹Bana iman eden kişi ölse de yaşayacaktır. 26 Yaşayan ve bana iman eden asla ölmeyecek. Buna iman ediyor musun?›› 27 Marta, ‹‹Evet, ya Rab›› dedi. ‹‹Senin, dünyaya gelecek olan Tanrı'nın Oğlu Mesih olduğuna iman ettim.›› 28 Bunu söyledikten sonra gidip kızkardeşi Meryem'i gizlice çağırdı. ‹‹Öğretmen burada, seni çağırıyor›› dedi. 29 Meryem bunu işitince hemen kalkıp İsa'nın yanına gitti. 30 İsa henüz köye varmamıştı, hâlâ Marta'nın kendisini karşıladığı yerdeydi. 31 Meryem'le birlikte evde bulunan ve kendisini teselli eden Yahudiler, onun hızla kalkıp dışarı çıktığını gördüler. Ağlamak için mezara gittiğini sanarak onu izlediler. 32 Meryem İsa'nın bulunduğu yere vardı. O'nu görünce ayaklarına kapanarak, ‹‹Ya Rab›› dedi, ‹‹Burada olsaydın, kardeşim ölmezdi.›› 33 Meryem'in ve onunla gelen Yahudiler'in ağladığını gören İsa'nın ruhunu hüzün kapladı, yüreği sızladı. 34 ‹‹Onu nereye koydunuz?›› diye sordu. O'na, ‹‹Ya Rab, gel gör›› dediler. 35 İsa ağladı. 36 Yahudiler, ‹‹Bakın, onu ne kadar seviyormuş!›› dediler. 37 Ama içlerinden bazıları, ‹‹Körün gözlerini açan bu kişi, Lazar'ın ölümünü de önleyemez miydi?›› dediler. 38 İsa yine derinden hüzünlenerek mezara vardı. Mezar bir mağaraydı, girişinde de bir taş duruyordu. 39 İsa, ‹‹Taşı çekin!›› dedi. Ölenin kızkardeşi Marta, ‹‹Rab, o artık kokmuştur, öleli dört gün oldu›› dedi. 40 İsa ona, ‹‹Ben sana, ‹İman edersen Tanrı'nın yüceliğini göreceksin› demedim mi?›› dedi. 41 Bunun üzerine taşı çektiler. İsa gözlerini gökyüzüne kaldırarak şöyle dedi: ‹‹Baba, beni işittiğin için sana şükrediyorum. 42 Beni her zaman işittiğini biliyordum. Ama bunu, çevrede duran halk için, beni senin gönderdiğine iman etsinler diye söyledim.›› 43 Bunları söyledikten sonra yüksek sesle, ‹‹Lazar, dışarı çık!›› diye bağırdı. 44 Ölü, elleri ayakları sargılarla bağlı, yüzü peşkirle sarılmış olarak dışarı çıktı. İsa oradakilere, ‹‹Onu çözün, bırakın gitsin›› dedi. 45 O zaman, Meryem'e gelen ve İsa'nın yaptıklarını gören Yahudiler'in birçoğu İsa'ya iman etti. 46 Ama içlerinden bazıları Ferisiler'e giderek İsa'nın yaptıklarını onlara bildirdiler. 



47 Bunun üzerine başkâhinler ve Ferisiler, Yüksek Kurul'u toplayıp dediler ki, ‹‹Ne yapacağız? Bu adam birçok doğaüstü belirti gerçekleştiriyor. (Mat 26:1; Mar 14:1; Luk 22:1) 48 Böyle devam etmesine izin verirsek, herkes O'na iman edecek. Romalılar da gelip kutsal yerimizi ve ulusumuzu ortadan kaldıracaklar.›› 49 İçlerinden biri, o yıl başkâhin olan Kayafa, ‹‹Hiçbir şey bilmiyorsunuz›› dedi. 50 ‹‹Bütün ulus yok olacağına, halk uğruna bir tek adamın ölmesi sizin için daha uygun. Bunu anlamıyor musunuz?›› 51-52 Bunu kendiliğinden söylemiyordu. O yılın başkâhini olarak İsa'nın, ulusun uğruna, ve yalnız ulusun uğruna değil, Tanrı'nın dağılmış çocuklarını toplayıp birleştirmek için de öleceğine ilişkin peygamberlikte bulunuyordu. 53 Böylece o günden itibaren İsa'yı öldürmek için düzen kurmaya başladılar. 54 Bu yüzden İsa artık Yahudiler arasında açıkça dolaşmaz oldu. Oradan ayrılarak çöle yakın bir yere, Efrayim denilen kente gitti. Öğrencileriyle birlikte orada kaldı. 55 Yahudiler'in Fısıh Bayramı yakındı. Taşradakilerin birçoğu bayramdan önce arınmak için Yeruşalim'e gitti. 56 Orada İsa'yı arayıp durdular. Tapınaktayken birbirlerine, ‹‹Ne dersiniz, bayrama hiç gelmeyecek mi?›› diye soruyorlardı. 57 Başkâhinlerle Ferisiler O'nu yakalayabilmek için, yerini bilenlerin haber vermesini buyurmuşlardı.

1 Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. (Luk 10:38) 2 It was Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was ill. (Yu 12:3) 3 So the sisters sent to him, saying, “Lord, he whom you love is ill.” (Yu 11:5; Yu 11:11; Yu 11:36) 4 But when Jesus heard it he said, “This illness does not lead to death. It is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.” (Mat 9:24; Yu 9:3; Yu 11:11; Yu 11:40; Yu 13:31) 5 Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. (Yu 11:3) 6 So, when he heard that Lazarus[1] was ill, he stayed two days longer in the place where he was. (Yu 2:4; Yu 7:6; Yu 7:8) 7 Then after this he said to the disciples, “Let us go to Judea again.” (Yu 10:40) 8 The disciples said to him, “Rabbi, the Jews were just now seeking to stone you, and are you going there again?” (Yu 1:38; Yu 8:59; Yu 10:31) 9 Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. (Luk 13:33; Yu 9:4; 1 Yu 2:10) 10 But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.” (Yer 13:16) 11 After saying these things, he said to them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I go to awaken him.” (Mat 27:52) 12 The disciples said to him, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover.” 13 Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that he meant taking rest in sleep. 14 Then Jesus told them plainly, “Lazarus has died, 15 and for your sake I am glad that I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.” 16 So Thomas, called the Twin,[2] said to his fellow disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with him.” (Mat 10:3; Mar 3:18; Luk 6:15; Yu 13:37; Yu 14:5; Yu 20:24; Yu 20:26; Yu 21:2; Elç 1:13) 



17 Now when Jesus came, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days. (Yu 11:39) 18 Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles[3] off, 19 and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console them concerning their brother. (Eyü 2:11; Yu 11:31) 20 So when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, but Mary remained seated in the house. (Luk 10:38) 21 Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. (Yu 11:32; Yu 11:37) 22 But even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you.” (Yu 9:31; Yu 11:42) 23 Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.” 24 Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.” (Luk 14:14; Yu 5:29; Yu 6:39; Yu 11:39) 25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life.[4] Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, (Yu 1:4; Yu 3:36; Yu 5:21; Yu 6:40; Yu 6:44; Yu 6:57; Yu 12:25; Yu 14:6; 1 Ko 15:21; Kol 3:4) 26 and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?” (Yu 6:50; Yu 8:51) 27 She said to him, “Yes, Lord; I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming into the world.” (Mat 11:3; Mat 16:16; Yu 6:14; Yu 6:69; Yu 8:24; Yu 13:19; Yu 20:31; 1 Yu 4:16; 1 Yu 5:1; 1 Yu 5:5) 



28 When she had said this, she went and called her sister Mary, saying in private, “The Teacher is here and is calling for you.” (Mat 26:18; Mar 14:14; Luk 22:11; Yu 13:13) 29 And when she heard it, she rose quickly and went to him. 30 Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was still in the place where Martha had met him. 31 When the Jews who were with her in the house, consoling her, saw Mary rise quickly and go out, they followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb to weep there. (Yu 11:19) 32 Now when Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet, saying to him, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” (Yu 11:21) 33 When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come with her also weeping, he was deeply moved[5] in his spirit and greatly troubled. (Mar 14:5; Yu 11:38; Yu 12:27; Yu 13:21) 34 And he said, “Where have you laid him?” They said to him, “Lord, come and see.” 35 Jesus wept. (Luk 19:41) 36 So the Jews said, “See how he loved him!” (Yu 11:3) 37 But some of them said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man also have kept this man from dying?” (Yu 9:6; Yu 11:21; Yu 11:32) 



38 Then Jesus, deeply moved again, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone lay against it. (Yşa 22:16; Mat 27:60; Mar 15:46; Luk 24:2; Yu 11:33; Yu 20:1) 39 Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, “Lord, by this time there will be an odor, for he has been dead four days.” (Yu 11:17) 40 Jesus said to her, “Did I not tell you that if you believed you would see the glory of God?” (Yu 11:4; Yu 11:25; Rom 6:4) 41 So they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up his eyes and said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me. (Yu 17:1) 42 I knew that you always hear me, but I said this on account of the people standing around, that they may believe that you sent me.” (Mat 26:53; Yu 3:17; Yu 11:22; Yu 12:29; Yu 17:8; Yu 17:21) 43 When he had said these things, he cried out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out.” 44 The man who had died came out, his hands and feet bound with linen strips, and his face wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.” (Yu 5:28; Yu 19:40; Yu 20:7) 



45 Many of the Jews therefore, who had come with Mary and had seen what he did, believed in him, (Yu 2:23; Yu 11:19; Yu 12:11; Elç 9:42) 46 but some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. 47 So the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered the council and said, “What are we to do? For this man performs many signs. (Mat 5:22; Mat 26:3; Yu 12:19; Elç 4:16) 48 If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.” (Yu 6:15; Yu 18:36; Elç 21:28) 49 But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all. (Mat 26:3; Yu 11:51; Yu 18:13) 50 Nor do you understand that it is better for you that one man should die for the people, not that the whole nation should perish.” (Yu 18:14) 51 He did not say this of his own accord, but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation, (Çık 28:30; Say 27:21; 1 Sa 23:9; 1 Sa 30:7; Ezr 2:63; Neh 7:65; Yu 11:49) 52 and not for the nation only, but also to gather into one the children of God who are scattered abroad. (Yşa 49:6; Yu 10:16; 1 Yu 2:2) 53 So from that day on they made plans to put him to death. (Yu 7:1) 54 Jesus therefore no longer walked openly among the Jews, but went from there to the region near the wilderness, to a town called Ephraim, and there he stayed with the disciples. (Yu 7:1; Yu 7:4) 55 Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand, and many went up from the country to Jerusalem before the Passover to purify themselves. (2 Ta 30:17; Luk 2:42; Yu 6:4; Yu 18:28; Elç 21:24) 56 They were looking for[6] Jesus and saying to one another as they stood in the temple, “What do you think? That he will not come to the feast at all?” (Yu 7:11) 57 Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where he was, he should let them know, so that they might arrest him.
