1 İsa'nın öğrencilerinin sayıca çoğaldığı o günlerde, Grekçe konuşan Yahudiler, günlük yardım dağıtımında kendi dullarına gereken ilginin gösterilmediğini ileri sürerek İbranice konuşan Yahudiler'den yakınmaya başladılar. 2 Bunun üzerine Onikiler, bütün öğrencileri bir araya toplayıp şöyle dediler: ‹‹Tanrı'nın sözünü yayma işini bırakıp maddi işlerle uğraşmamız doğru olmaz. 3 Bu nedenle, kardeşler, aranızdan Ruh'la ve bilgelikle dolu, yedi saygın kişi seçin. Onları bu iş için görevlendirelim. 4 Biz ise kendimizi duaya ve Tanrı sözünü yaymaya adayalım.›› 5-6 Bu öneri bütün topluluğu hoşnut etti. Böylece, iman ve Kutsal Ruh'la dolu biri olan İstefanos'un yanısıra Filipus, Prohoros, Nikanor, Timon, Parmenas ve Yahudiliğe dönen Antakyalı Nikolas'ı seçip elçilerin önüne çıkardılar. Elçiler de dua edip ellerini onların üzerine koydular. 7 Böylece Tanrı'nın sözü yayılıyor, Yeruşalim'deki öğrencilerin sayısı arttıkça artıyor, kâhinlerden birçoğu da iman çağrısına uyuyordu. 



8 Tanrı'nın lütfuyla ve kudretle dolu olan İstefanos, halk arasında büyük belirtiler ve harikalar yapıyordu. 9 Ne var ki, Azatlılar Havrası diye bilinen havranın bazı üyeleri ve Kirene'den, İskenderiye'den, Kilikya'dan ve Asya İli'nden bazı kişiler İstefanos'la çekişmeye başladılar. 10 Ama İstefanos'un konuşmasındaki bilgeliğe ve Ruh'a karşı koyamadılar. 11 Bunun üzerine birkaç kişiyi el altından ayartarak onlara, ‹‹Bu adamın Musa'ya ve Tanrı'ya karşı küfür dolu sözler söylediğini duyduk›› dedirttiler. 12 Böylelikle halkı, ileri gelenleri ve din bilginlerini kışkırttılar. Gidip İstefanos'u yakaladılar ve Yüksek Kurul'un önüne çıkardılar. 13 Getirdikleri yalancı tanıklar, ‹‹Bu adam durmadan bu kutsal yere ve Yasa'ya karşı konuşuyor›› dediler. 14 ‹‹ ‹Nasıralı İsa burayı yıkacak, Musa'nın bize emanet ettiği töreleri de değiştirecek› dediğini duyduk.›› 15 Kurul'da oturanların hepsi, İstefanos'a baktıklarında yüzünün bir melek yüzüne benzediğini gördüler.

1 Now in these days when the disciples were increasing in number, a complaint by the Hellenists[1] arose against the Hebrews because their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution. (Elç 2:41; Elç 2:47; Elç 4:4; Elç 4:35; Elç 5:14; Elç 6:7) 2 And the twelve summoned the full number of the disciples and said, “It is not right that we should give up preaching the word of God to serve tables. 3 Therefore, brothers,[2] pick out from among you seven men of good repute, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we will appoint to this duty. (Yas 1:13; Luk 1:15; Luk 4:1; Elç 6:5; Elç 7:55; Elç 11:24; 1 Ti 3:7) 4 But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.” (Elç 1:14) 5 And what they said pleased the whole gathering, and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolaus, a proselyte of Antioch. (Mat 23:15; Elç 2:11; Elç 6:3; Elç 8:5; Elç 11:24; Elç 13:43; Elç 21:8) 6 These they set before the apostles, and they prayed and laid their hands on them. 8 And Stephen, full of grace and power, was doing great wonders and signs among the people. (Elç 1:8) 9 Then some of those who belonged to the synagogue of the Freedmen (as it was called), and of the Cyrenians, and of the Alexandrians, and of those from Cilicia and Asia, rose up and disputed with Stephen. 10 But they could not withstand the wisdom and the Spirit with which he was speaking. (Luk 21:14) 11 Then they secretly instigated men who said, “We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses and God.” (1 Kr 21:10; 1 Kr 21:13; Mat 26:59) 12 And they stirred up the people and the elders and the scribes, and they came upon him and seized him and brought him before the council, 13 and they set up false witnesses who said, “This man never ceases to speak words against this holy place and the law, (Mat 24:15; Elç 6:11; Elç 7:58; Elç 21:28; Elç 25:8) 14 for we have heard him say that this Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place and will change the customs that Moses delivered to us.” (Dan 9:26; Mat 5:17; Mat 26:61; Elç 15:1; Elç 21:21) 15 And gazing at him, all who sat in the council saw that his face was like the face of an angel. (Hak 13:6; Vai 8:1)
