Die Beschneidung Israels in Gilgal

1 Als nun alle Könige der Amoriter, die diesseits des Jordan gegen Westen wohnten, und alle Könige der Kanaaniter am Meer hörten, wie der HERR das Wasser des Jordan vor den Söhnen Israels ausgetrocknet hatte, bis sie hinübergezogen waren, da verzagte ihr Herz, und es blieb kein Mut mehr in ihnen vor den Söhnen Israels. 2 Zu der Zeit sprach der HERR zu Josua: Mache dir scharfe Messer und beschneide die Söhne Israels wiederum, zum zweiten Mal! (1Mo 17,10; 2Mo 4,24; Lk 1,59; Lk 2,21)

3 Da machte sich Josua scharfe Messer und beschnitt die Söhne Israels auf dem Hügel Aralot. 4 Und das ist der Grund, warum Josua sie beschnitt: Alles Volk männlichen Geschlechts, das aus Ägypten gezogen war, alle Kriegsleute waren in der Wüste auf dem Weg gestorben, nachdem sie aus Ägypten gezogen waren. (4Mo 14,22; 4Mo 26,64) 5 Das ganze Volk, das ausgezogen war, war zwar beschnitten; aber das ganze Volk, das auf dem Weg in der Wüste geboren war, nach ihrem Auszug aus Ägypten, war nicht beschnitten worden. (Röm 2,25; Gal 6,15) 6 Denn die Kinder Israels wanderten 40 Jahre lang in der Wüste, bis das ganze Volk der Kriegsleute umgekommen war, die aus Ägypten gezogen waren, weil sie der Stimme des HERRN nicht gehorcht hatten; wie denn der HERR ihnen geschworen hatte, dass sie das Land nicht sehen sollten, von dem der HERR ihren Vätern geschworen hatte, dass er es uns geben würde — ein Land, in dem Milch und Honig fließt. 7 Ihre Söhne nun, die Er an ihrer Stelle erweckt hatte, die beschnitt Josua; denn sie waren unbeschnitten, weil man sie auf dem Weg nicht beschnitten hatte. (5Mo 1,39) 8 Als nun das ganze Volk beschnitten war, blieben sie an ihrem Ort im Lager, bis sie heil wurden. (1Mo 34,25) 9 Und der HERR sprach zu Josua: Heute habe ich die Schande Ägyptens von euch abgewälzt! Darum wird jener Ort Gilgal^[1] genannt bis zu diesem Tag. Die Passahfeier. Der Fürst über das Heer des Herrn

10 Während nun die Kinder Israels sich in Gilgal lagerten, hielten sie das Passah am vierzehnten Tag des Monats, am Abend, in den Ebenen von Jericho. (2Mo 12,6; 2Mo 12,11; 4Mo 9,5) 11 Und am Tag nach dem Passah aßen sie von dem Getreide des Landes, nämlich ungesäuertes Brot und geröstetes Korn, an ebendiesem Tag. (2Mo 13,6) 12 Und das Manna hörte auf am folgenden Tag, als sie von dem Getreide des Landes aßen; und es gab für die Kinder Israels kein Manna mehr, sondern in jenem Jahr aßen sie vom Ertrag des Landes Kanaan. (2Mo 16,35; Joh 6,31) 13 Es geschah aber, als Josua bei Jericho war, da erhob er seine Augen und sah sich um; und siehe, ein Mann stand ihm gegenüber, der hatte ein blankes Schwert in seiner Hand. 14 Er aber sprach: Nein, sondern ich bin der Fürst über das Heer des HERRN; jetzt bin ich gekommen! Da fiel Josua auf sein Angesicht zur Erde und betete an und sprach zu ihm: Was redet mein Herr zu seinem Knecht? 15 Und der Fürst über das Heer des HERRN sprach zu Josua: Ziehe deine Schuhe aus von deinen Füßen; denn der Ort, auf dem du stehst, ist heilig! Und Josua tat es. (2Mo 3,5; 3Mo 25,23; Jes 27,5; Apg 7,33)

1 All the Amorite and Canaanite kings heard how the LORD had dried up the River Jordan. They heard how he had dried it up for the Israelites until they had gone across it. The Amorite kings lived west of the Jordan. The kings of Canaan lived along the Mediterranean Sea. When all those kings heard what the LORD had done, they were terrified. They weren’t brave enough to face the Israelites anymore.

Circumcision and Passover at Gilgal

2 At that time the LORD said to Joshua, ‘Make knives out of flint. Use them to circumcise the men of Israel.’ 3 So Joshua made knives out of flint. Then he used them to circumcise the men of Israel at Gibeath Haaraloth. 4 Here is why Joshua circumcised them. All the men who came out of Egypt had died. They died while they were wandering through the Sinai Desert. They were the men old enough to serve in the army. 5 All the men who came out had been circumcised. But all the men born in the desert during the journey from Egypt hadn’t been circumcised. 6 The Israelites had moved around in the desert for 40 years. By the end of that time all the men old enough to serve in the army when they left Egypt had died. That’s because they hadn’t obeyed the LORD. He had made a promise to them. He had told them they wouldn’t see the land. It’s the land he had promised to their people to give us. It’s a land that has plenty of milk and honey. 7 Because they hadn’t obeyed him, he raised up their sons to take their place. They were the ones Joshua circumcised. They hadn’t been circumcised yet. That’s because no one had circumcised them during the journey. 8 So Joshua circumcised all those men. The whole nation remained in the camp until the men were healed. 9 Then the LORD spoke to Joshua. He said, ‘Today I have taken away from you the shame of being slaves in Egypt.’ That’s why the place where the men were circumcised has been called Gilgal to this very day. 10 The Israelites celebrated the Passover Feast. They observed it on the evening of the 14th day of the month. They did it while they were camped at Gilgal on the plains around Jericho. 11 The day after the Passover, they ate some of the food grown in the land. On that same day they ate corn that had been cooked. They also ate bread made without yeast. 12 The manna stopped coming down the day after they ate the food grown in the land. The Israelites didn’t have manna anymore. Instead, that year they ate food grown in Canaan.

Israel captures Jericho

13 When Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him. The man was holding a sword. He was ready for battle. Joshua went up to him. He asked, ‘Are you on our side? Or are you on the side of our enemies?’ 14 ‘I am not on either side,’ he replied. ‘I have come as the commander of the LORD’s army.’ Then Joshua fell with his face to the ground. He asked the man, ‘What message does my Lord have for me?’ 15 The commander of the LORD’s army replied, ‘Take off your sandals. The place you are standing on is holy ground.’ So Joshua took them off.
