Zwei Denkmäler zum ewigen Gedenken

1 Es geschah aber, nachdem das ganze Volk vollends über den Jordan gezogen war, dass der HERR zu Josua redete und sprach: 2 Nehmt euch aus dem Volk zwölf Männer, aus jedem Stamm einen Mann, (4Mo 1,1; Jos 3,12; Mt 10,1) 3 und gebietet ihnen und sprecht: Hebt hier zwölf Steine auf, mitten aus dem Jordan, von dem Ort, wo die Füße der Priester gestanden haben, und bringt sie mit euch hinüber und legt sie nieder in dem Nachtlager, wo ihr diese Nacht verbringen werdet! 4 Da rief Josua die zwölf Männer, die er aus den Kindern Israels bestellt hatte, aus jedem Stamm einen Mann; 5 und er sprach zu ihnen: Geht hinüber, vor die Lade des HERRN, eures Gottes, mitten in den Jordan, und hebt jeder einen Stein auf seine Schulter, nach der Zahl der Stämme der Kinder Israels, (2Mo 24,4) 6 damit sie ein Zeichen unter euch seien. Wenn eure Kinder künftig fragen und sagen werden: »Was haben diese Steine für euch zu bedeuten?«, (2Mo 12,26; 2Mo 13,14; 5Mo 6,20; Jos 22,27; Ps 44,2; Ps 78,3)

7 so sollt ihr ihnen sagen, dass das Wasser des Jordan vor der Bundeslade des HERRN abgeschnitten wurde; als sie durch den Jordan ging, sind die Wasser des Jordan abgeschnitten worden; so sollen diese Steine den Kindern Israels zu einem ewigen Gedenken dienen! (2Mo 12,14; 5Mo 16,3; 1Chr 16,12) 8 Da machten es die Kinder Israels so, wie es Josua geboten hatte, und sie hoben zwölf Steine aus dem Jordan, wie der HERR es Josua gesagt hatte, nach der Zahl der Stämme der Kinder Israels, und brachten sie mit sich in das Nachtlager und legten sie dort nieder. (Jos 1,16; Jos 4,3) 9 Und Josua richtete auch zwölf Steine mitten im Jordan auf, an der Stelle, wo die Füße der Priester gestanden hatten, welche die Bundeslade trugen; sie sind noch dort bis zu diesem Tag. (2Mo 28,21; 1Kön 18,31) 10 Die Priester aber, welche die Lade trugen, standen mitten im Jordan, bis alles ausgerichtet war, was der HERR Josua geboten hatte, dem Volk zu sagen, ganz wie Mose es dem Josua geboten hatte. Und das Volk ging rasch hinüber. (Jos 3,17) 11 Als nun das ganze Volk vollständig hinübergegangen war, da zog die Lade des HERRN auch hinüber, und die Priester, vor den Augen des Volkes. (4Mo 10,33; Jos 4,4; Jes 52,12) 12 Die Söhne Rubens aber und die Söhne Gads und der halbe Stamm Manasse gingen in Kampfordnung vor den Kindern Israels her, wie Mose zu ihnen geredet hatte. (4Mo 32,20) 13 Etwa 40 000 zum Krieg Gerüstete zogen vor dem HERRN zum Kampf in die Ebene von Jericho. (Ri 20,1) 14 An diesem Tag machte der HERR den Josua groß vor den Augen von ganz Israel; und sie fürchteten ihn, wie sie Mose gefürchtet hatten, sein ganzes Leben lang. 15 Und der HERR sprach zu Josua: 16 Gebiete den Priestern, welche die Lade des Zeugnisses tragen, dass sie aus dem Jordan heraufsteigen! (Jos 3,8) 17 Und Josua befahl den Priestern und sprach: Steigt herauf aus dem Jordan! 18 Und als die Priester, welche die Bundeslade des HERRN trugen, aus der Mitte des Jordan heraufstiegen und die Fußsohlen der Priester kaum das Trockene berührt hatten, da kehrte das Wasser des Jordan wieder in das Flussbett zurück und trat über alle seine Ufer wie zuvor. (Jos 3,15) 19 Es war aber der zehnte Tag des ersten Monats, als das Volk aus dem Jordan heraufstieg; und sie lagerten sich in Gilgal, an der Ostgrenze [des Gebietes] von Jericho. 20 Und Josua richtete die zwölf Steine, die sie aus dem Jordan genommen hatten, in Gilgal auf; (Jos 4,3; Jos 4,8) 21 und er redete zu den Kindern Israels und sprach: Wenn in Zukunft eure Kinder ihre Väter fragen und sagen werden: »Was bedeuten diese Steine?«, (Jos 4,6) 22 so sollt ihr es euren Kindern erklären und sagen: Israel ging auf trockenem Boden durch diesen Jordan, (Jos 3,17; Jos 4,7) 23 als der HERR, euer Gott, das Wasser des Jordan vor euch vertrocknen ließ, bis ihr hinübergegangen wart, ebenso wie der HERR, euer Gott, es am Schilfmeer getan hat, das er vor uns vertrocknen ließ, bis wir hindurchgegangen waren; (2Mo 14,21; Ps 66,6) 24 damit alle Völker auf Erden erkennen, wie mächtig die Hand des HERRN ist, und damit ihr den HERRN, euren Gott, allezeit fürchtet! 1 After the whole nation had gone across the River Jordan, the LORD spoke to Joshua. He said, 2 ‘Choose 12 men from among the people. Choose one from each tribe. 3 Tell them to get 12 stones from the middle of the river. They must pick them up from right where the priests stood. They must carry the stones over with all of you. And they must put them down at the place where you will stay tonight.’ 4 So Joshua called together the 12 men he had appointed from among the Israelites. There was one man from each tribe. 5 He said to them, ‘Go back to the middle of the River Jordan. Go to where the ark of the LORD your God is. Each one of you must pick up a stone. You must carry it on your shoulder. There will be as many stones as there are tribes in Israel. 6 The stones will serve as a reminder to you. In days to come, your children will ask you, “What do these stones mean?” 7 Tell them that the LORD cut off the flow of water in the River Jordan. Tell them its water stopped flowing when the ark of the covenant of the LORD went across. The stones will always remind the Israelites of what happened there.’ 8 So the Israelites did as Joshua commanded them. They took 12 stones from the middle of the River Jordan. There was one stone for each of the tribes of Israel. It was just as the LORD had told Joshua. The people carried the stones with them to their camp. There they put them down. 9 Joshua also piled up 12 stones in the middle of the river. He piled them up right where the priests who carried the ark of the covenant had stood. And they are still there to this very day. 10 The priests who carried the ark remained standing in the middle of the River Jordan. They stayed there until the people had done everything the LORD had commanded Joshua. It was just as Moses had instructed Joshua. All the people went across quickly. 11 As soon as they did, the ark of the LORD and the priests also went across to the other side. The people were watching them. 12 Among the people who went across the river were men from the tribes of Reuben and Gad and half of the tribe of Manasseh. The men were ready for battle. They went across ahead of the rest of the Israelites. It was just as Moses had instructed them. 13 There were about 40,000 of them. All of them were ready for battle. They went across in front of the ark of the LORD. They marched to the plains around Jericho. They were prepared to go to war. 14 That day the LORD honoured Joshua in the eyes of all the Israelites. They had respect for Joshua as long as he lived. They respected him just as much as they had respected Moses. 15 Then the LORD spoke to Joshua. He said, 16 ‘Command the priests to come up out of the River Jordan. They are carrying the ark where the tablets of the covenant law are kept.’ 17 So Joshua gave a command to the priests. He said, ‘Come up out of the River Jordan.’ 18 Then the priests came up out of the river. They were carrying the ark of the covenant of the LORD. As soon as they stepped out on dry ground, the water of the Jordan began to flow again. It went over its banks, just as it had done before. 19 On the tenth day of the first month the people went up out of the River Jordan. They camped at Gilgal on the eastern border of Jericho. 20 Joshua set up the 12 stones at Gilgal. They were the ones the people had taken out of the Jordan. 21 Then he spoke to the Israelites. He said, ‘In days to come, your children after you will ask their parents, “What do these stones mean?” 22 Their parents must tell them, “Israel went across the River Jordan on dry ground.” 23 The LORD your God dried up the Jordan for you until you had gone across it. He did to the River Jordan the same thing he had done to the Red Sea. He dried up the Red Sea ahead of us until we had gone across it. 24 He did it so that all the nations on earth would know that he is powerful. He did it so that you would always have respect for the LORD your God.’
