Die Philister besiegen Israel und rauben die Bundeslade

1 Und das Wort Samuels erging an ganz Israel. Und Israel zog aus in den Kampf, den Philistern entgegen, und lagerte sich bei Eben-Eser; die Philister aber hatten sich bei Aphek gelagert. (5Mo 29,10; 5Mo 33,10; Jos 15,53; 1Sam 5,1; 1Sam 7,12; 1Sam 29,1)

2 Und die Philister stellten sich in Schlachtordnung auf gegen Israel. Als aber der Kampf sich ausbreitete, wurde Israel von den Philistern geschlagen; und sie erschlugen aus den Schlachtreihen im Feld etwa 4 000 Mann. (Jos 7,5; Jos 7,12; 1Sam 17,8; 1Sam 17,21; Ps 79,7; Kla 3,40)

3 Und als das Volk ins Lager zurückkam, da sprachen die Ältesten von Israel: Warum hat uns der HERR heute vor den Philistern geschlagen? Lasst uns die Bundeslade des HERRN von Silo zu uns herholen, so wird Er in unsere Mitte kommen und uns aus der Hand unserer Feinde retten! (5Mo 29,24; 1Sam 14,18; Ps 74,1; Ps 74,11; Jes 59,1)

4 Und das Volk sandte nach Silo und ließ die Bundeslade des HERRN der Heerscharen, der über den Cherubim thront, von dort holen. Und die beiden Söhne Elis, Hophni und Pinehas, waren dort bei der Bundeslade Gottes. (2Mo 25,18; 4Mo 7,89) 5 Und es geschah, als die Bundeslade des HERRN in das Lager kam, da jauchzte ganz Israel mit großem Jauchzen, sodass die Erde erbebte. (4Mo 10,35; Jer 7,4) 6 Als aber die Philister den Schall dieses Jauchzens hörten, sprachen sie: Was bedeutet der Schall eines so großen Jauchzens im Lager der Hebräer? Und sie erfuhren, dass die Lade des HERRN in das Lager gekommen war. (2Mo 32,17) 7 Da fürchteten sich die Philister, denn sie sprachen: Gott ist in das Lager gekommen! Und sie sprachen: Wehe uns! Denn so etwas ist bisher noch nie geschehen! (2Sam 5,19) 8 Wehe uns! Wer wird uns von der Hand dieser mächtigen Götter erretten? Das sind die Götter, welche die Ägypter in der Wüste mit allerlei Plagen schlugen! (2Mo 15,14; Jos 2,9) 9 So seid nun tapfer und erweist euch als Männer, ihr Philister, damit ihr den Hebräern nicht dienen müsst, wie sie euch gedient haben. Seid Männer und kämpft! 10 Da kämpften die Philister, und Israel wurde geschlagen, und jeder floh in sein Zelt; und die Niederlage war sehr groß, da aus Israel 30 000 Mann Fußvolk fielen. 12 Da lief ein Benjaminiter aus den Schlachtreihen weg und kam am selben Tag nach Silo; seine Kleider waren zerrissen, und Erde war auf sein Haupt gestreut. (Jos 7,6; 2Sam 1,2; 2Sam 15,32) 13 Und als er hineinkam, siehe, da saß Eli auf dem Stuhl an der Seite des Weges und hielt Ausschau; denn sein Herz bangte um die Lade Gottes. Als nun der Mann in die Stadt kam und Bericht brachte, da schrie die ganze Stadt auf. (2Kor 7,10; 1Joh 3,20) 14 Und als Eli das laute Geschrei hörte, fragte er: Was ist das für ein Lärm? Da kam der Mann schnell und berichtete es Eli. (1Sam 4,6) 15 Eli aber war 98 Jahre alt, und seine Augen waren starr, sodass er nicht [mehr] sehen konnte. (1Mo 27,1; 1Sam 3,2; Ps 90,10) 16 Aber der Mann sprach zu Eli: Ich komme vom Schlachtfeld; ich bin heute vom Schlachtfeld geflohen! Er aber sprach: Wie steht die Sache, mein Sohn? (2Sam 1,4) 17 Da antwortete der Bote und sprach: Israel ist vor den Philistern geflohen, und das Volk hat eine große Niederlage erlitten, und auch deine beiden Söhne, Hophni und Pinehas, sind tot; und die Lade Gottes ist weggenommen! (1Sam 3,11; 1Sam 4,10) 18 Als er aber die Lade Gottes erwähnte, da fiel [Eli] rückwärts vom Stuhl neben dem Tor und brach das Genick und starb; denn er war alt und ein schwerer Mann. 19 Aber seine Schwiegertochter, die Frau des Pinehas, stand vor der Geburt. Als sie nun das Geschrei hörte, dass die Lade Gottes weggenommen und ihr Schwiegervater und ihr Mann tot seien, da sank sie nieder und gebar; denn es überfielen sie ihre Wehen. (1Chr 4,9; Jes 26,17) 20 Als sie aber im Sterben lag, sprachen die Frauen, die neben ihr standen: Fürchte dich nicht, du hast einen Sohn geboren! Aber sie antwortete nichts und beachtete es nicht. (1Mo 35,17) 21 Und sie nannte den Knaben Ikabod und sprach: Die Herrlichkeit ist von Israel gewichen!, weil die Lade Gottes weggenommen worden war, und wegen ihres Schwiegervaters und ihres Mannes. 22 Und sie sprach wiederum: Die Herrlichkeit ist von Israel gewichen, denn die Lade Gottes ist weggenommen! (Ps 78,61)

1 And the word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out against the Philistines to battle, and pitched beside Ebenezer: and the Philistines pitched in Aphek. 2 And the Philistines put themselves in array against Israel: and when they joined battle, Israel was smitten before the Philistines: and they slew of the army in the field about four thousand men. 3 And when the people were come into the camp, the elders of Israel said, Wherefore hath the LORD smitten us to day before the Philistines? Let us fetch the ark of the covenant of the LORD out of Shiloh unto us, that, when it cometh among us, it may save us out of the hand of our enemies. 4 So the people sent to Shiloh, that they might bring from thence the ark of the covenant of the LORD of hosts, which dwelleth between the cherubims: and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God. 5 And when the ark of the covenant of the LORD came into the camp, all Israel shouted with a great shout, so that the earth rang again. 6 And when the Philistines heard the noise of the shout, they said, What meaneth the noise of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews? And they understood that the ark of the LORD was come into the camp. 7 And the Philistines were afraid, for they said, God is come into the camp. And they said, Woe unto us! for there hath not been such a thing heretofore. 8 Woe unto us! who shall deliver us out of the hand of these mighty Gods? these are the Gods that smote the Egyptians with all the plagues in the wilderness. 9 Be strong, and quit yourselves like men, O ye Philistines, that ye be not servants unto the Hebrews, as they have been to you: quit yourselves like men, and fight. 10 And the Philistines fought, and Israel was smitten, and they fled every man into his tent: and there was a very great slaughter; for there fell of Israel thirty thousand footmen. 11 And the ark of God was taken; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were slain. 12 And there ran a man of Benjamin out of the army, and came to Shiloh the same day with his clothes rent, and with earth upon his head. 13 And when he came, lo, Eli sat upon a seat by the wayside watching: for his heart trembled for the ark of God. And when the man came into the city, and told it , all the city cried out. 14 And when Eli heard the noise of the crying, he said, What meaneth the noise of this tumult? And the man came in hastily, and told Eli. 15 Now Eli was ninety and eight years old; and his eyes were dim, that he could not see. 16 And the man said unto Eli, I am he that came out of the army, and I fled to day out of the army. And he said, What is there done, my son? 17 And the messenger answered and said, Israel is fled before the Philistines, and there hath been also a great slaughter among the people, and thy two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God is taken. 18 And it came to pass, when he made mention of the ark of God, that he fell from off the seat backward by the side of the gate, and his neck brake, and he died: for he was an old man, and heavy. And he had judged Israel forty years. 19 And his daughter in law, Phinehas'wife, was with child, near to be delivered: and when she heard the tidings that the ark of God was taken, and that her father in law and her husband were dead, she bowed herself and travailed; for her pains came upon her. 20 And about the time of her death the women that stood by her said unto her, Fear not; for thou hast born a son. But she answered not, neither did she regard it . 21 And she named the child Ichabod, saying, The glory is departed from Israel: because the ark of God was taken, and because of her father in law and her husband. 22 And she said, The glory is departed from Israel: for the ark of God is taken.
