Israel verzagt vor den Philistern. Sauls eigenmächtiges Opfer

1 Saul war ein Jahr König gewesen, und nachdem er zwei Jahre über Israel regiert hatte, (Ps 65,12; Lk 13,8) 2 da erwählte sich Saul 3 000 Mann aus Israel, davon waren 2 000 mit Saul in Michmas und auf dem Bergland von Bethel, und 1 000 mit Jonathan in Gibea-Benjamin; das übrige Volk aber ließ er gehen, jeden in sein Zelt. 3 Und Jonathan schlug den Wachtposten der Philister, der bei Geba war, und die Philister hörten es. Saul aber ließ im ganzen Land das Schopharhorn blasen und sagen: Die Hebräer sollen es hören! (Jos 18,24; Ri 3,27; Ri 6,34; 2Sam 5,25)

4 Und ganz Israel hörte sagen: Saul hat den Philisterposten geschlagen; auch hat sich Israel bei den Philistern verhasst gemacht! Und das Volk wurde zusammengerufen, um Saul nach Gilgal zu folgen. (1Mo 34,30; 2Mo 5,21; Jos 5,9; 1Sam 10,8; 1Sam 11,14; Sach 11,8)

5 Die Philister versammelten sich aber, um gegen Israel zu kämpfen: 30 000 Streitwagen, 6 000 Reiter und Kriegsvolk [so zahlreich] wie der Sand am Ufer des Meeres; die zogen herauf und lagerten sich bei Michmas, östlich von Beth-Awen. (Jos 7,2; Ri 7,12; Ps 33,16; Hos 4,15)

6 Als nun die Männer von Israel sahen, dass sie in Not waren — denn das Volk war bedrängt —, da versteckte sich das Volk in Höhlen und Dickichten, in Felsklüften, Gewölben und Zisternen. (Ri 6,2; Ri 10,9) 7 Auch gingen [einige] Hebräer über den Jordan in das Land Gad und Gilead. Saul aber war noch in Gilgal; und das ganze Volk hinter ihm war verzagt. (Jos 8,11) 8 Und er wartete sieben Tage lang, bis zu der von Samuel bestimmten Zeit, aber Samuel kam nicht nach Gilgal. Und das Volk verließ ihn und zerstreute sich. (1Sam 10,8; Hebr 10,36) 9 Da sprach Saul: Bringt das Brandopfer und die Friedensopfer zu mir! Und er brachte das Brandopfer dar. (Spr 19,2; Kla 3,26; Hab 2,3; Mt 14,31)

10 Und es geschah, als er gerade damit fertig war, das Brandopfer darzubringen, siehe, da kam Samuel. Da ging Saul hinaus, ihm entgegen, um ihn zu grüßen. (Rut 2,4; 1Sam 15,13; Ps 129,8) 11 Samuel aber sprach: Was hast du getan? Saul antwortete: Als ich sah, dass das Volk mich verließ und sich zerstreute, und dass du nicht kamst zur bestimmten Zeit, und dass die Philister bei Michmas versammelt waren, (1Mo 4,10; Jos 7,19; 2Kön 5,25; 2Kor 4,18; 2Kor 5,7)

12 da sprach ich: Nun werden die Philister zu mir nach Gilgal herabkommen, und ich habe das Angesicht des HERRN noch nicht erbeten! Da wagte ich’s und brachte das Brandopfer dar! (1Sam 15,22; Jes 5,21; Jes 30,1) 13 Samuel aber sprach zu Saul: Du hast töricht gehandelt! Du hast das Gebot des HERRN, deines Gottes, das er dir geboten hat, nicht gehalten! 14 nun aber wird dein Königtum keinen Bestand haben. Der HERR hat sich einen Mann nach seinem Herzen ausgesucht; dem hat der HERR geboten, über sein Volk Fürst zu sein, weil du nicht gehalten hast, was dir der HERR gebot! (1Sam 13,13; 1Sam 15,28; 1Sam 16,7; 1Sam 16,12; Offb 3,11)

15 Und Samuel machte sich auf und ging von Gilgal hinauf nach Gibea-Benjamin. Saul aber musterte das Volk, das [noch] bei ihm war, etwa 600 Mann. (1Sam 13,2; 1Sam 14,2) 16 Und Saul und sein Sohn Jonathan und das Volk, das noch bei ihm war, lagen in Gibea-Benjamin; die Philister aber hatten sich bei Michmas gelagert. (1Sam 13,2; 1Sam 13,3; Neh 11,31) 17 Und der Verheerungszug zog in drei Abteilungen aus dem Lager der Philister aus; die eine Abteilung nahm den Weg nach Ophra, nach dem Gebiet von Schual hin; (Jos 18,23; Jos 19,3) 18 die andere Abteilung aber nahm den Weg nach Beth-Horon, und die dritte den Weg zu dem Gebiet, das über das Tal Zeboim hinweg zur Wüste hinunterblickt. (Jos 10,10; Neh 11,34) 19 Aber im ganzen Land Israel war kein Schmied zu finden, denn die Philister hatten gesagt: Damit sich die Hebräer nicht Schwerter und Speere machen! (Ri 5,8; 2Kön 24,14) 20 So musste ganz Israel zu den Philistern hinabgehen, wenn jemand seine Pflugschar, seinen Spaten, sein Beil oder seine Sichel zu schärfen hatte, (Pred 10,10; Jes 54,16; Jer 24,1) 21 wenn die Schneiden an den Pflugscharen, an den Spaten und den Gabeln und den Beilen abgestumpft waren, und um die Ochsenstachel gerade zu richten. 22 Und so kam es, dass am Tag der Schlacht weder Schwert noch Speer zu finden war in der Hand des ganzen Volkes, das mit Saul und Jonathan war; [nur] für Saul und seinen Sohn Jonathan war etwas vorhanden. And Saul blew the trumpet throughout all the land, saying, Let the Hebrews hear. 4 And all Israel heard say that Saul had smitten a garrison of the Philistines, and that Israel also was had in abomination with the Philistines. And the people were called together after Saul to Gilgal. 5 And the Philistines gathered themselves together to fight with Israel, thirty thousand chariots, and six thousand horsemen, and people as the sand which is on the sea shore in multitude: and they came up, and pitched in Michmash, eastward from Bethaven. 6 When the men of Israel saw that they were in a strait, (for the people were distressed,) then the people did hide themselves in caves, and in thickets, and in rocks, and in high places, and in pits. 7 And some of the Hebrews went over Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead. As for Saul, he was yet in Gilgal, and all the people followed him trembling. 8 And he tarried seven days, according to the set time that Samuel had appointed : but Samuel came not to Gilgal; and the people were scattered from him. 9 And Saul said, Bring hither a burnt offering to me, and peace offerings. And he offered the burnt offering. 10 And it came to pass, that as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt offering, behold, Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him, that he might salute him. 11 And Samuel said, What hast thou done? And Saul said, Because I saw that the people were scattered from me, and that thou camest not within the days appointed, and that the Philistines gathered themselves together at Michmash; 12 Therefore said I, The Philistines will come down now upon me to Gilgal, and I have not made supplication unto the LORD: I forced myself therefore, and offered a burnt offering. 13 And Samuel said to Saul, Thou hast done foolishly: thou hast not kept the commandment of the LORD thy God, which he commanded thee: for now would the LORD have established thy kingdom upon Israel for ever. 14 But now thy kingdom shall not continue: the LORD hath sought him a man after his own heart, and the LORD hath commanded him to be captain over his people, because thou hast not kept that which the LORD commanded thee. 15 And Samuel arose, and gat him up from Gilgal unto Gibeah of Benjamin. And Saul numbered the people that were present with him, about six hundred men. 16 And Saul, and Jonathan his son, and the people that were present with them, abode in Gibeah of Benjamin: but the Philistines encamped in Michmash. 17 And the spoilers came out of the camp of the Philistines in three companies: one company turned unto the way that leadeth to Ophrah, unto the land of Shual: 18 And another company turned the way to Bethhoron: and another company turned to the way of the border that looketh to the valley of Zeboim toward the wilderness. 19 Now there was no smith found throughout all the land of Israel: for the Philistines said, Lest the Hebrews make them swords or spears: 20 But all the Israelites went down to the Philistines, to sharpen every man his share, and his coulter, and his axe, and his mattock. 21 Yet they had a file for the mattocks, and for the coulters, and for the forks, and for the axes, and to sharpen the goads. 22 So it came to pass in the day of battle, that there was neither sword nor spear found in the hand of any of the people that were with Saul and Jonathan: but with Saul and with Jonathan his son was there found. 23 And the garrison of the Philistines went out to the passage of Michmash.
