1 Abimelech aber, der Sohn Jerub-Baals, ging hin nach Sichem, zu den Brüdern seiner Mutter, und redete mit ihnen und mit dem ganzen Geschlecht des Vaterhauses seiner Mutter und sprach: (Ri 8,31) 2 Redet doch vor den Ohren aller Bürger von Sichem: Was ist besser für euch, dass 70 Männer, alle Söhne Jerub-Baals, über euch herrschen, oder dass ein Mann über euch herrscht? Denkt auch daran, dass ich euer Gebein und Fleisch bin! (1Mo 29,14; Ri 8,30) 3 Da redeten die Brüder seiner Mutter alle seine Worte vor den Ohren aller Bürger von Sichem. Und ihr Herz neigte sich Abimelech zu, denn sie sagten: Er ist unser Bruder! (1Mo 37,26; 1Mo 42,21; Ps 10,2; Spr 1,10) 4 Und sie gaben ihm 70 Silberlinge aus dem Haus des Baal-Berit. Und Abimelech warb damit nichtsnutzige und leichtfertige Männer an, die ihm nachfolgten. (Ri 8,33; Ri 11,3; 2Chr 13,7; Hi 30,8; Apg 17,5) 5 Und er kam in das Haus seines Vaters nach Ophra und tötete seine Brüder, die Söhne Jerub-Baals, 70 Männer auf einem Stein. Jotam aber, der jüngste Sohn Jerub-Baals, blieb übrig; denn er hatte sich versteckt. (Ri 6,11; Ri 6,24; 1Kön 17,2; 2Kön 11,1) 6 Und alle Bürger von Sichem und das ganze Haus Millo versammelten sich und gingen hin und machten Abimelech zum König bei der Terebinthe des Denkmals[1], die in Sichem steht. (1Mo 35,4; Jos 24,25; Jos 24,26) 



7 Als dies Jotam berichtet wurde, ging er hin und trat auf die Höhe des Berges Garizim; und er erhob seine Stimme, rief und sprach zu ihnen: »Hört mir zu, ihr Bürger von Sichem, so wird Gott auch auf euch hören! (5Mo 27,12; 1Kön 18,27) 8 Die Bäume gingen hin, um einen König über sich zu salben, und sie sprachen zum Ölbaum: Sei unser König! (2Kön 14,9) 9 Aber der Ölbaum antwortete ihnen: Soll ich meine Fettigkeit lassen, die Götter und Menschen an mir preisen, und hingehen, um die Bäume zu beschirmen? (2Mo 30,25; 4Mo 15,4; 4Mo 15,6; Ps 104,15) 10 Da sprachen die Bäume zum Feigenbaum: Komm du und sei König über uns! (Ri 9,12; Ri 9,14) 11 Aber der Feigenbaum sprach zu ihnen: Soll ich meine Süßigkeit lassen und meine gute Frucht und hingehen, um die Bäume zu beschirmen? (Lk 13,6) 12 Da sprachen die Bäume zum Weinstock: Komm du und sei unser König! (Ri 9,10; Ri 9,14) 13 Aber der Weinstock sprach zu ihnen: Soll ich meinen Most lassen, der Götter und Menschen erfreut, und hingehen, um die Bäume zu beschirmen? (2Mo 29,40; 4Mo 15,5; 4Mo 15,7; Ps 104,15; Spr 31,6) 14 Da sprachen alle Bäume zum Dornbusch: Komm du und sei König über uns! (Ri 9,10; Ri 9,12) 15 Und der Dornbusch sprach zu den Bäumen: Wollt ihr mich wirklich zum König über euch salben, so kommt und nehmt Zuflucht unter meinem Schatten! Wenn aber nicht, so soll Feuer ausgehen vom Dornbusch und die Zedern des Libanon verzehren! (4Mo 21,28; Jes 2,13; Jes 30,2; Jes 37,24; Kla 4,20; Hes 19,14; Hes 31,3; Dan 4,9) 16 Wenn ihr nun treu und redlich gehandelt habt damit, dass ihr Abimelech zum König gemacht habt, und wenn ihr Gutes getan habt an Jerub-Baal und an seinem Haus, und ihm getan habt, wie er es verdient hat — (Ri 8,35) 17 er, mein Vater, der für euch gekämpft und seine Seele hingegeben hat, um euch aus der Hand der Midianiter zu erretten; (Ri 4,16; Röm 16,4; Offb 12,11) 18 während ihr euch heute gegen das Haus meines Vaters aufgelehnt und seine Söhne ermordet habt, 70 Männer auf einem Stein, und den Abimelech, den Sohn seiner Magd, über die Bürger von Sichem zum König gemacht habt, weil er euer Bruder ist —, (Ri 8,31; Ri 8,35; Ri 9,5; Ri 9,6; Ps 109,4) 19 wenn ihr also an diesem Tag an Jerub-Baal und an seinem Haus treu und redlich gehandelt habt, so erlebt Freude an Abimelech, und er erlebe Freude an euch! (Jes 8,6; Phil 3,3; Jak 4,16) 20 Wenn aber nicht, so gehe Feuer aus von Abimelech und verzehre die Bürger von Sichem und das Haus Millo; und es gehe auch Feuer aus von den Bürgern von Sichem und vom Haus Millo und verzehre den Abimelech!« (Ri 9,15; Ri 9,49) 21 Danach floh Jotam und entkam, und er ging nach Beer und wohnte dort, aus Furcht vor seinem Bruder Abimelech. (4Mo 21,16; Jos 19,8) 



22 Als nun Abimelech drei Jahre lang über Israel geherrscht hatte, 23 da sandte Gott einen bösen Geist zwischen Abimelech und die Bürger von Sichem; und die Männer von Sichem fielen von Abimelech ab, (Jos 22,16; 1Sam 16,14; 1Sam 18,10; 1Kön 12,19; 1Kön 22,23) 24 damit die an den 70 Söhnen Jerub-Baals begangene Gewalttat und ihr Blut über ihren Bruder Abimelech komme, der sie ermordet hatte, und auf ihn gelegt würde, auch über die Bürger von Sichem, die seine Hände gestärkt hatten, sodass er seine Brüder ermordete. (1Sam 15,33; 1Kön 2,32; Est 9,25; Ps 7,17) 25 Und die Bürger von Sichem bestellten Wegelagerer gegen ihn auf den Gipfeln der Berge, die beraubten alle, die auf der Straße bei ihnen vorüberzogen. Und es wurde dem Abimelech berichtet. (Ps 10,8; Ps 12,9) 26 Gaal aber, der Sohn Ebeds, und seine Brüder kamen und siedelten nach Sichem über, und die Bürger von Sichem verließen sich auf ihn; (Jes 2,22; Jer 17,5) 27 und sie zogen hinaus aufs Feld und lasen ihre Weinberge ab und kelterten; und dann feierten sie ein Erntefest und gingen in das Haus ihres Gottes und aßen und tranken und verfluchten den Abimelech. (Ri 9,4) 28 Und Gaal, der Sohn Ebeds, sprach: Wer ist Abimelech? Und wer ist Sichem, dass wir ihm dienen sollten? Ist er nicht der Sohn Jerub-Baals, und Sebul sein Statthalter? Dient den Männern Hemors, des Vaters Sichems! Denn warum sollten wir jenem dienen? (1Mo 33,19; 1Kön 12,16) 29 Wenn dieses Volk doch unter meiner Hand wäre, so würde ich den Abimelech beseitigen! Und er sagte von Abimelech: Rücke du [nur] mit zahlreicher Mannschaft aus! (2Sam 15,4; 2Kön 14,8; Ps 73,9; Spr 11,2; Spr 14,16; Spr 16,18; Jak 4,16) 30 Als aber Sebul, der Oberste der Stadt, die Worte Gaals, des Sohnes Ebeds, hörte, entbrannte sein Zorn; (1Sam 20,30; 1Sam 20,34) 31 und er sandte insgeheim Boten zu Abimelech und ließ ihm sagen: Siehe, Gaal, der Sohn Ebeds, und seine Brüder sind nach Sichem gekommen, und siehe, sie wiegeln die Stadt gegen dich auf! (Ri 9,28) 32 So mache dich nun auf bei Nacht, du und das Volk, das bei dir ist, und lege dich auf dem Feld in den Hinterhalt. (Hi 24,13; Spr 1,11; Spr 4,16; Röm 3,15) 33 Und am Morgen, wenn die Sonne aufgeht, mache dich früh auf und überfalle die Stadt; wenn dann er und das Volk, das bei ihm ist, dir entgegenziehen, so verfahre mit ihm, wie es sich für dich ergibt! (1Sam 10,7; 1Sam 25,8; Pred 9,10) 34 Da stand Abimelech bei Nacht auf und alles Volk, das bei ihm war, und sie legten einen Hinterhalt gegen Sichem in vier Abteilungen. 35 Und Gaal, der Sohn Ebeds, ging hinaus und trat an den Eingang des Stadttors. Aber Abimelech samt dem Volk, das mit ihm war, machte sich auf aus dem Hinterhalt. (Ri 9,44) 36 Als nun Gaal das Volk sah, sprach er zu Sebul: Siehe, da kommen Leute von der Höhe der Berge herab! Sebul aber sprach zu ihm: Du siehst den Schatten der Berge für Leute an! (Hes 7,7; Mk 8,24) 37 Aber Gaal versicherte nochmals und sprach: Siehe, Leute kommen von der Höhe des Landes herab, und eine Abteilung kommt auf dem Weg von der Terebinthe der Zauberer her! 38 Da sprach Sebul zu ihm: Wo ist nun dein Maul, mit dem du sprachst: Wer ist Abimelech, dass wir ihm dienen sollten? Ist nicht dies das Volk, das du verachtet hast? Zieh nun aus und kämpfe mit ihm! (1Sam 2,3; 1Kön 20,11) 39 Und Gaal zog aus vor den Bürgern von Sichem und kämpfte mit Abimelech. (Ri 9,35) 40 Aber Abimelech jagte ihn, sodass er vor ihm floh, und es fiel eine Menge Erschlagener bis an den Eingang des Stadttores. (1Kön 20,18; 1Kön 20,30) 41 Und Abimelech verblieb in Aruma; Sebul aber vertrieb den Gaal und seine Brüder, sodass sie nicht in Sichem verbleiben konnten. (Ri 9,28) 42 Am anderen Morgen aber ging das Volk aufs Feld hinaus, und es wurde dem Abimelech berichtet. 43 Da nahm er das Heer und teilte es in drei Abteilungen und lauerte im Feld. Als er nun sah, dass das Volk aus der Stadt ging, überfiel er sie und schlug sie. (Ri 7,16) 44 Denn Abimelech und der Heeresteil, der bei ihm war, überfielen sie und traten an den Eingang des Stadttors; die zwei anderen Abteilungen aber überfielen alle, die auf dem Feld waren, und erschlugen sie. (Ri 9,15; Gal 5,15) 45 Und Abimelech kämpfte gegen die Stadt jenen ganzen Tag; und er eroberte die Stadt und brachte das Volk um, das darin war, und zerstörte die Stadt und streute Salz darauf. (2Kön 3,25; Hi 39,6; Ps 107,34; Jes 47,11; Zef 2,9) 46 Als die Insassen der Burg von Sichem dies hörten, gingen sie in den Saal des Hauses ihres Gottes Berit. (Ri 8,33; 1Kön 8,59; Jes 45,20) 47 Als aber Abimelech hörte, dass sich alle Insassen der Burg von Sichem versammelt hatten, (Jos 20,7; 1Chr 6,52) 48 da ging er mit all seinem Volk, das bei ihm war, auf den Berg Zalmon; und Abimelech nahm eine Axt zur Hand und hieb einen Ast von den Bäumen und hob ihn auf und legte ihn auf seine Achsel und sprach zu dem Volk, das mit ihm war: Was ihr mich habt tun sehen, das tut rasch auch! (1Kön 11,1; Ps 68,15) 49 Da schlug auch jeder vom Volk einen Ast ab, und sie folgten Abimelech nach und legten sie an den Saal und steckten damit den Saal in Brand, sodass alle Leute des Turmes von Sichem starben, etwa 1 000 Männer und Frauen. (1Sam 25,38; Spr 10,21; Hes 18,4) 50 Abimelech aber zog nach Tebez und belagerte Tebez und eroberte es. (2Sam 11,21) 51 Aber mitten in der Stadt war ein starker Turm; auf den flohen alle Männer und Frauen und alle Bürger der Stadt und schlossen hinter sich zu, und sie stiegen auf das Dach des Turmes. 52 Da kam Abimelech bis zum Turm und wollte ihn stürmen; und er näherte sich dem Tor des Turms, um ihn in Brand zu stecken. 53 Aber eine Frau warf den oberen Stein einer Handmühle dem Abimelech auf den Kopf und zerschmetterte ihm den Schädel. (2Sam 11,21; Hi 31,3) 54 Da rief Abimelech rasch seinen Waffenträger und sprach zu ihm: Ziehe dein Schwert und töte mich, dass man nicht von mir sage: Eine Frau hat ihn umgebracht! Da durchstach ihn sein Diener, und er starb. (1Sam 31,4) 55 Als aber die Israeliten sahen, dass Abimelech tot war, ging jeder an seinen Ort. (2Sam 18,16; 2Sam 20,21; 1Kön 22,36) 56 So vergalt Gott dem Abimelech das Böse, das er an seinem Vater getan hatte, als er seine 70 Brüder ermordete. (Ri 9,24; Hi 31,3; Ps 58,11; Apg 28,4; Gal 6,7) 57 Ebenso vergalt Gott alle Bosheit der Männer von Sichem auf ihren Kopf; und der Fluch Jotams, des Sohnes Jerub-Baals, kam über sie. (Jos 6,26; Ri 9,20; 1Kön 16,34; Ps 7,17; Ps 94,23; Spr 5,22; Jes 3,11; Ob 1,15)

1 Now Abimelech the son of Jerubbaal went to Shechem to his mother’s relatives and said to them and to the whole clan of his mother’s family, (Ri 8,31) 2 “Say in the ears of all the leaders of Shechem, ‘Which is better for you, that all seventy of the sons of Jerubbaal rule over you, or that one rule over you?’ Remember also that I am your bone and your flesh.” (1Mo 29,14; Ri 8,30; Ri 9,1) 3 And his mother’s relatives spoke all these words on his behalf in the ears of all the leaders of Shechem, and their hearts inclined to follow Abimelech, for they said, “He is our brother.” (Ri 9,18) 4 And they gave him seventy pieces of silver out of the house of Baal-berith with which Abimelech hired worthless and reckless fellows, who followed him. (Ri 8,33; Ri 9,46; Ri 11,3; 2Chr 13,7; Spr 12,11; Apg 17,5) 5 And he went to his father’s house at Ophrah and killed his brothers the sons of Jerubbaal, seventy men, on one stone. But Jotham the youngest son of Jerubbaal was left, for he hid himself. (Ri 6,24; 2Kön 11,1) 6 And all the leaders of Shechem came together, and all Beth-millo, and they went and made Abimelech king, by the oak of the pillar at Shechem. (Ri 9,20; 2Sam 5,9) 7 When it was told to Jotham, he went and stood on top of Mount Gerizim and cried aloud and said to them, “Listen to me, you leaders of Shechem, that God may listen to you. (5Mo 11,29; 5Mo 27,12; Jos 8,33; Joh 4,20) 8 The trees once went out to anoint a king over them, and they said to the olive tree, ‘Reign over us.’ (Ri 8,22; 2Kön 14,9) 9 But the olive tree said to them, ‘Shall I leave my abundance, by which gods and men are honored, and go hold sway over the trees?’ 10 And the trees said to the fig tree, ‘You come and reign over us.’ 11 But the fig tree said to them, ‘Shall I leave my sweetness and my good fruit and go hold sway over the trees?’ 12 And the trees said to the vine, ‘You come and reign over us.’ 13 But the vine said to them, ‘Shall I leave my wine that cheers God and men and go hold sway over the trees?’ (Ps 104,15) 14 Then all the trees said to the bramble, ‘You come and reign over us.’ 15 And the bramble said to the trees, ‘If in good faith you are anointing me king over you, then come and take refuge in my shade, but if not, let fire come out of the bramble and devour the cedars of Lebanon.’ (4Mo 21,28; Ri 9,20; 1Kön 4,33; 2Kön 14,9; 2Kön 19,23; Ps 104,16; Jes 2,13; Jes 30,2; Jes 37,24; Hes 19,14; Dan 4,12; Hos 14,7) 16 “Now therefore, if you acted in good faith and integrity when you made Abimelech king, and if you have dealt well with Jerubbaal and his house and have done to him as his deeds deserved— (Ri 6,32; Ri 8,35; Spr 12,14; Jes 3,11) 17 for my father fought for you and risked his life and delivered you from the hand of Midian, 18 and you have risen up against my father’s house this day and have killed his sons, seventy men on one stone, and have made Abimelech, the son of his female servant, king over the leaders of Shechem, because he is your relative— (Ri 8,31; Ri 9,3; Ri 9,5) 19 if you then have acted in good faith and integrity with Jerubbaal and with his house this day, then rejoice in Abimelech, and let him also rejoice in you. (Jes 8,6) 20 But if not, let fire come out from Abimelech and devour the leaders of Shechem and Beth-millo; and let fire come out from the leaders of Shechem and from Beth-millo and devour Abimelech.” (Ri 9,15; Ri 9,56) 21 And Jotham ran away and fled and went to Beer and lived there, because of Abimelech his brother. (4Mo 21,16) 



22 Abimelech ruled over Israel three years. 23 And God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the leaders of Shechem, and the leaders of Shechem dealt treacherously with Abimelech, (1Sam 16,14; 1Sam 18,10; 1Sam 19,9; Jes 33,1) 24 that the violence done to the seventy sons of Jerubbaal might come, and their blood be laid on Abimelech their brother, who killed them, and on the men of Shechem, who strengthened his hands to kill his brothers. (Ri 9,56; 1Kön 2,32; Est 9,25; Ps 7,16; Mt 23,35) 25 And the leaders of Shechem put men in ambush against him on the mountaintops, and they robbed all who passed by them along that way. And it was told to Abimelech. 26 And Gaal the son of Ebed moved into Shechem with his relatives, and the leaders of Shechem put confidence in him. 27 And they went out into the field and gathered the grapes from their vineyards and trod them and held a festival; and they went into the house of their god and ate and drank and reviled Abimelech. (Ri 9,4; Ri 9,46) 28 And Gaal the son of Ebed said, “Who is Abimelech, and who are we of Shechem, that we should serve him? Is he not the son of Jerubbaal, and is not Zebul his officer? Serve the men of Hamor the father of Shechem; but why should we serve him? (1Mo 34,2; 1Mo 34,6; 1Sam 25,10) 29 Would that this people were under my hand! Then I would remove Abimelech. I would say[1] to Abimelech, ‘Increase your army, and come out.’” 30 When Zebul the ruler of the city heard the words of Gaal the son of Ebed, his anger was kindled. 31 And he sent messengers to Abimelech secretly,[2] saying, “Behold, Gaal the son of Ebed and his relatives have come to Shechem, and they are stirring up[3] the city against you. 32 Now therefore, go by night, you and the people who are with you, and set an ambush in the field. 33 Then in the morning, as soon as the sun is up, rise early and rush upon the city. And when he and the people who are with him come out against you, you may do to them as your hand finds to do.” (Pred 9,10) 34 So Abimelech and all the men who were with him rose up by night and set an ambush against Shechem in four companies. 35 And Gaal the son of Ebed went out and stood in the entrance of the gate of the city, and Abimelech and the people who were with him rose from the ambush. 36 And when Gaal saw the people, he said to Zebul, “Look, people are coming down from the mountaintops!” And Zebul said to him, “You mistake[4] the shadow of the mountains for men.” (Ri 9,7; Ri 9,25) 37 Gaal spoke again and said, “Look, people are coming down from the center of the land, and one company is coming from the direction of the Diviners’ Oak.” 38 Then Zebul said to him, “Where is your mouth now, you who said, ‘Who is Abimelech, that we should serve him?’ Are not these the people whom you despised? Go out now and fight with them.” (Ri 9,28) 39 And Gaal went out at the head of the leaders of Shechem and fought with Abimelech. 40 And Abimelech chased him, and he fled before him. And many fell wounded, up to the entrance of the gate. 41 And Abimelech lived at Arumah, and Zebul drove out Gaal and his relatives, so that they could not dwell at Shechem. 42 On the following day, the people went out into the field, and Abimelech was told. 43 He took his people and divided them into three companies and set an ambush in the fields. And he looked and saw the people coming out of the city. So he rose against them and killed them. 44 Abimelech and the company that was with him rushed forward and stood at the entrance of the gate of the city, while the two companies rushed upon all who were in the field and killed them. (Ri 20,37) 45 And Abimelech fought against the city all that day. He captured the city and killed the people who were in it, and he razed the city and sowed it with salt. (5Mo 29,23; 2Kön 3,25) 46 When all the leaders of the Tower of Shechem heard of it, they entered the stronghold of the house of El-berith. (Ri 8,33; Ri 9,4; Ri 9,49) 47 Abimelech was told that all the leaders of the Tower of Shechem were gathered together. 48 And Abimelech went up to Mount Zalmon, he and all the people who were with him. And Abimelech took an axe in his hand and cut down a bundle of brushwood and took it up and laid it on his shoulder. And he said to the men who were with him, “What you have seen me do, hurry and do as I have done.” (Ps 68,14) 49 So every one of the people cut down his bundle and following Abimelech put it against the stronghold, and they set the stronghold on fire over them, so that all the people of the Tower of Shechem also died, about 1,000 men and women. (Ri 9,46) 50 Then Abimelech went to Thebez and encamped against Thebez and captured it. 51 But there was a strong tower within the city, and all the men and women and all the leaders of the city fled to it and shut themselves in, and they went up to the roof of the tower. 52 And Abimelech came to the tower and fought against it and drew near to the door of the tower to burn it with fire. 53 And a certain woman threw an upper millstone on Abimelech’s head and crushed his skull. (2Sam 11,21) 54 Then he called quickly to the young man his armor-bearer and said to him, “Draw your sword and kill me, lest they say of me, ‘A woman killed him.’” And his young man thrust him through, and he died. (1Sam 31,4) 55 And when the men of Israel saw that Abimelech was dead, everyone departed to his home. 56 Thus God returned the evil of Abimelech, which he committed against his father in killing his seventy brothers. (Ri 9,24; Hi 31,8; Ps 94,23; Spr 5,22) 57 And God also made all the evil of the men of Shechem return on their heads, and upon them came the curse of Jotham the son of Jerubbaal. (Ri 9,20)
