Uciderea lui Iacov și arestarea lui Petru

1 Cam în aceeași vreme, regele Irod^[1] a pus mâna pe unii din biserică pentru a le face rău. (Lu 3:1; Fapte 4:27) 2 El l‑a omorât cu sabia pe Iacov, fratele lui Ioan. 3 Când a văzut că lucrul acesta place iudeilor, l‑a mai arestat și pe Petru. Era în timpul Sărbătorii Azimelor. 4 După ce l‑a prins, l‑a aruncat în închisoare, lăsându‑l sub paza a patru grupe^[2] de câte patru soldați. El intenționa ca, după Paște, să‑l ducă înaintea poporului. 5 În timp ce Petru era păzit în închisoare, biserica se ruga cu înflăcărare lui Dumnezeu pentru el.

Eliberarea miraculoasă a lui Petru

6 În noaptea de dinaintea zilei când Irod urma să‑l ducă înaintea poporului, Petru dormea între doi soldați, legat cu două lanțuri, iar niște gărzi păzeau închisoarea, stând în fața porții. 7 Și iată că un înger al Domnului a apărut deodată și o lumină a strălucit în celula închisorii. El l‑a trezit pe Petru, lovindu‑l în coastă, și i‑a zis: „Ridică‑te repede!“ Atunci lanțurile i‑au căzut de la mâini. 8 Îngerul i‑a zis: „Încinge‑ți mijlocul și leagă‑ți sandalele!“ El a făcut întocmai. Îngerul i‑a zis: „Pune mantaua pe tine și urmează‑mă!“ 9 Petru l‑a urmat și a ieșit afară, dar nu știa că ceea ce se întâmplă cu ajutorul îngerului este adevărat: i se părea că are^[3] o viziune. 10 După ce au trecut de prima și de a doua gardă, au ajuns la poarta de fier care dă în cetate, iar ea li s‑a deschis de la sine. Au ieșit, au luat‑o pe o stradă și imediat îngerul s‑a îndepărtat de la el. 11 Când s‑a dezmeticit, Petru și‑a zis: „Acum știu într-adevăr că Domnul Și‑a trimis îngerul și m‑a salvat din mâna lui Irod și de la tot ce aștepta poporul iudeu să se întâmple!“ 12 Înțelegând cele petrecute, s‑a dus acasă la Maria, mama lui Ioan, numit și Marcu, unde erau adunați destul de mulți oameni și se rugau. 13 A bătut la ușa pridvorului și o slujnică, pe nume Roda, a venit să răspundă. 14 Ea a recunoscut glasul lui Petru și, de bucurie, în loc să deschidă ușa, a alergat înăuntru și a anunțat că Petru stă la ușă. 15 Ei i‑au zis: „Ți‑ai ieșit din minți!“ Dar ea insista că este așa. Ei însă ziceau: „Este îngerul lui!“^[4] (Mat 18:10; Ev 1:14) 16 Petru însă continua să bată. Când au deschis și l‑au văzut, au încremenit. 17 El le‑a făcut semn cu mâna să tacă și le‑a istorisit cum l‑a scos Domnul din închisoare. Apoi a zis: „Transmiteți aceste lucruri lui Iacov^[5] și celorlalți frați!“ După aceea a ieșit și a plecat în alt loc. 18 Când s‑a făcut ziuă, s‑a stârnit o mare tulburare între gardieni cu privire la ceea ce se întâmplase cu Petru. 19 Irod l‑a căutat și, pentru că nu l‑a găsit, a cercetat gărzile și a poruncit să fie executate. Apoi a coborât din Iudeea în Cezareea^[6] și a rămas o vreme acolo. (Fapte 8:40)

Moartea lui Irod

20 Irod era foarte mâniat pe tyrieni și pe sidonieni. Dar aceștia au venit într‑un singur gând la el și, după ce l‑au convins pe Blastus, șambelanul^[7] regelui, să‑i ajute, au cerut pace, pentru că țara lor primea hrană din țara regelui. 21 Într‑o zi hotărâtă^[8], Irod s‑a îmbrăcat în haina regală, s‑a așezat pe scaunul de judecată și le‑a ținut un discurs. 22 Mulțimea a strigat: „Acesta este glasul unui zeu, nu al unui om!“ 23 Deodată l‑a lovit un înger al Domnului^[9], pentru că nu dăduse slavă lui Dumnezeu, și și‑a dat suflarea, fiind mâncat de viermi. 24 Însă Cuvântul lui Dumnezeu înainta și era tot mai răspândit. 25 Barnabas și Saul, după ce și‑au împlinit însărcinarea, s‑au întors de la^[10] Ierusalim, luându‑l cu ei pe Ioan, numit și Marcu.

An angel helps Peter escape from prison

1 About this time, King Herod arrested some people who belonged to the church. He planned to make them suffer greatly. 2 He had James killed with a sword. James was John’s brother. 3 Herod saw that the death of James pleased some Jews. So he arrested Peter also. This happened during the Feast of Unleavened Bread. 4 After Herod arrested Peter, he put him in prison. Peter was placed under guard. He was watched by four groups of four soldiers each. Herod planned to put Peter on public trial. It would take place after the Passover Feast. 5 So Peter was kept in prison. But the church prayed hard to God for him. 6 It was the night before Herod was going to bring him to trial. Peter was sleeping between two soldiers. Two chains held him there. Lookouts stood guard at the entrance. 7 Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared. A light shone in the prison cell. The angel struck Peter on his side. Peter woke up. ‘Quick!’ the angel said. ‘Get up!’ The chains fell off Peter’s wrists. 8 Then the angel said to him, ‘Put on your clothes and sandals.’ Peter did so. ‘Put on your coat,’ the angel told him. ‘Follow me.’ 9 Peter followed him out of the prison. But he had no idea that what the angel was doing was really happening. He thought he was seeing a vision. 10 They passed the first and second guards. Then they came to the iron gate leading to the city. It opened for them by itself. They went through it. They walked the length of one street. Suddenly the angel left Peter. 11 Then Peter realised what had happened. He said, ‘Now I know for sure that the Lord has sent his angel. He set me free from Herod’s power. He saved me from everything the Jewish people were hoping would happen.’ 12 When Peter understood what had happened, he went to Mary’s house. Mary was the mother of John Mark. Many people had gathered in her home. They were praying there. 13 Peter knocked at the outer entrance. A servant named Rhoda came to answer the door. 14 She recognised Peter’s voice. She was so excited that she ran back without opening the door. ‘Peter is at the door!’ she exclaimed. 15 ‘You’re out of your mind,’ they said to her. But she kept telling them it was true. So they said, ‘It must be his angel.’ 16 Peter kept on knocking. When they opened the door and saw him, they were amazed. 17 Peter motioned with his hand for them to be quiet. He explained how the Lord had brought him out of prison. ‘Tell James and the other brothers and sisters about this,’ he said. Then he went to another place. 18 In the morning the soldiers were bewildered. They couldn’t figure out what had happened to Peter.

Herod dies

19 So Herod had them look everywhere for Peter. But they didn’t find him. Then Herod questioned the guards closely. He ordered that they be put to death. Then Herod went from Judea to Caesarea and stayed there. 20 He had been quarrelling with the people of Tyre and Sidon. So they got together and asked for a meeting with him. This was because they depended on the king’s country to supply them with food. They gained the support of Blastus and then asked for peace. Blastus was a trusted personal servant of the king. 21 The appointed day came. Herod was seated on his throne. He was wearing his royal robes. He made a speech to the people. 22 Then they shouted, ‘This is the voice of a god. It’s not the voice of a man.’ 23 Right away an angel of the Lord struck Herod down. Herod had not given praise to God. So he was eaten by worms and died. 24 But God’s word continued to spread and many people believed the message.

Barnabas and Saul are sent off

25 Barnabas and Saul finished their task. Then they returned from Jerusalem. They took John Mark with them.
