1 Vedeți ce dragoste ne‑a dăruit Tatăl: să fim numiți copii ai lui Dumnezeu. Și suntem! De aceea nu ne cunoaște lumea: pentru că nu L‑a cunoscut nici pe El. 2 Preaiubiților, acum suntem copii ai lui Dumnezeu. Și ce vom fi n‑a fost arătat încă, dar știm că, atunci când Se va arăta El^[1], vom fi asemenea Lui, pentru că‑L vom vedea așa cum este. 3 Oricine are speranța aceasta în El se curățește, așa cum și El este curat. 4 Oricine face^[2] păcatul^[3], face și fărădelegea; iar păcatul este fărădelege. (1 Ioan 2:1) 5 Știți că El a fost arătat ca să îndepărteze păcatele; și în El nu este păcat. 6 Oricine rămâne în El nu trăiește în păcat; oricine trăiește în păcat nu L‑a văzut, nici nu L‑a cunoscut. 7 Copilașilor, nimeni să nu vă ducă în rătăcire! Cel ce face dreptatea este drept, așa cum Acela este drept. 8 Cel ce face păcatul^[4] este de la diavolul^[5], pentru că diavolul păcătuiește de la început. Pentru aceasta a fost arătat Fiul lui Dumnezeu: ca să distrugă lucrările diavolului. 9 Oricine este născut din Dumnezeu nu trăiește în păcat, pentru că sămânța lui Dumnezeu rămâne în el. Și el nu poate continua să păcătuiască^[6], fiindcă a fost născut din Dumnezeu. 10 Prin aceasta sunt scoși la iveală copiii lui Dumnezeu și copiii diavolului. Oricine nu face dreptatea nu este de la Dumnezeu, și nici cel ce nu‑l iubește pe fratele său.

Să ne iubim unii pe alții

11 Acesta este mesajul pe care l‑ați auzit de la început: să ne iubim unii pe alții, 12 nu precum Cain, care era de la cel rău și care l‑a ucis pe fratele lui. Și de ce l‑a ucis? Pentru că faptele lui Cain erau rele, iar cele ale fratelui său erau drepte. 13 Nu fiți uimiți, fraților, dacă lumea vă urăște. 14 Noi știm că am trecut de la moarte la viață, pentru că îi iubim pe frați; cine nu iubește rămâne în moarte. 15 Oricine își urăște fratele este un ucigaș. Și știți că niciun ucigaș nu are viața veșnică rămasă^[7] în el. 16 Prin aceasta am cunoscut dragostea: prin faptul că El Și‑a dat viața pentru noi. Și noi deci suntem datori să ne dăm viața pentru frați. 17 Dacă însă cineva are bunurile acestei lumi și‑l vede pe fratele său în nevoi, dar își închide inima^[8] față de el, atunci cum rămâne în el dragostea lui Dumnezeu?! 18 Copilașilor, să nu iubim cu vorba, nici cu limba, ci prin faptă și adevăr. 19 Prin aceasta vom cunoaște că suntem din adevăr și ne vom liniști^[9] inimile în prezența Lui, 20 oricând ne‑ar condamna inimile noastre. Căci Dumnezeu este mai mare decât inimile noastre și cunoaște totul. 21 Preaiubiților, dacă nu ne condamnă inimile noastre, avem îndrăzneală înaintea lui Dumnezeu, 22 iar dacă cerem ceva, primim de la El, pentru că păzim poruncile Lui și facem ce este plăcut înaintea Lui. 23 Și porunca Lui este aceasta: să credem în Numele Fiului Său, Isus Cristos, și să ne iubim unii pe alții așa cum ne‑a poruncit. 24 Cel ce păzește poruncile Lui rămâne în El, iar El în acesta. Prin aceasta știm că El rămâne în noi: prin Duhul pe Care ni L‑a dat.

1 See what amazing love the Father has given us! Because of it, we are called children of God. And that’s what we really are! The world doesn’t know us because it didn’t know him. 2 Dear friends, now we are children of God. He still hasn’t let us know what we will be. But we know that when Christ appears, we will be like him. That’s because we will see him as he really is. 3 Christ is pure. All who hope to be like him make themselves pure. 4 Everyone who sins breaks the law. In fact, breaking the law is sin. 5 But you know that Christ came to take our sins away. And there is no sin in him. 6 No one who remains joined to him keeps on sinning. No one who keeps on sinning has seen him or known him. 7 Dear children, don’t let anyone lead you astray. The person who does what is right is holy, just as Christ is holy. 8 The person who does what is sinful belongs to the devil. That’s because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. But the Son of God came to destroy the devil’s work. 9 Those who are God’s children will not keep on sinning. God’s very nature remains in them. They can’t go on sinning. That’s because they are God’s children. 10 Here is how you can tell the difference between God’s children and the devil’s children. Anyone who doesn’t do what is right isn’t God’s child. And anyone who doesn’t love their brother or sister isn’t God’s child either.

More instructions about loving and hating one another

11 From the beginning we have heard that we should love one another. 12 Don’t be like Cain. He belonged to the evil one. He murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because the things Cain had done were wrong. But the things his brother had done were right. 13 My brothers and sisters, don’t be surprised if the world hates you. 14 We know that we have left our old dead way of life. And we have entered into new life. We know this because we love one another. Anyone who doesn’t love still lives in their old condition. 15 Anyone who hates their brother or sister is a murderer. And you know that no murderer has eternal life. 16 We know what love is because Jesus Christ gave his life for us. So we should give our lives for our brothers and sisters. 17 Suppose someone sees a brother or sister in need and is able to help them. And suppose that person doesn’t take pity on these needy people. Then how can the love of God be in that person? 18 Dear children, don’t just talk about love. Put your love into action. Then it will truly be love. 19 Here’s how we know that we hold to the truth. And here’s how we put our hearts at rest, knowing that God is watching. 20 If our hearts judge us, we know that God is greater than our hearts. And he knows everything. 21 Dear friends, if our hearts do not judge us, we can be bold with God. 22 And he will give us anything we ask. That’s because we obey his commands. We do what pleases him. 23 God has commanded us to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ. He has also commanded us to love one another. 24 The one who obeys God’s commands remains joined to him. And he remains joined to them. Here is how we know that God lives in us. We know it because of the Holy Spirit he gave us.
