Psalm 107

Psalm 107

English Standard Version

1 Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever! (Ps 100,5; Ps 105,1)2 Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, whom he has redeemed from trouble[1] (Ps 106,10; Jes 62,12; Jes 63,4)3 and gathered in from the lands, from the east and from the west, from the north and from the south. (5Mo 30,3; Ps 106,47; Jes 11,12; Jes 43,5; Jes 56,8; Jer 29,14; Jer 31,8; Jer 31,10; Hes 20,34; Hes 20,41; Hes 39,27)4 Some wandered in desert wastes, finding no way to a city to dwell in; (5Mo 32,10; Ps 107,36; Ps 107,40)5 hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted within them. (Ps 77,3)6 Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. (Ps 106,44; Ps 107,13; Ps 107,19; Ps 107,28)7 He led them by a straight way till they reached a city to dwell in. (Esr 8,21; Ps 107,4)8 Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man! (Ps 107,15; Ps 107,21; Ps 107,31)9 For he satisfies the longing soul, and the hungry soul he fills with good things. (Ps 34,10; Ps 146,7; Lk 1,53)10 Some sat in darkness and in the shadow of death, prisoners in affliction and in irons, (Hi 10,21; Hi 36,8; Ps 107,14; Jes 42,7; Jes 49,9; Mi 7,8; Lk 1,79)11 for they had rebelled against the words of God, and spurned the counsel of the Most High. (5Mo 31,20; Ps 78,40; Ps 106,7; Ps 106,33; Ps 106,43; Spr 1,30; Spr 5,12; Spr 15,5; Lk 7,30)12 So he bowed their hearts down with hard labor; they fell down, with none to help. (Ps 22,11)13 Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. (Ps 107,6; Ps 107,19; Ps 107,28)14 He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and burst their bonds apart. (Ps 2,3; Ps 107,10)15 Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man! (Ps 107,8; Ps 107,21; Ps 107,31)16 For he shatters the doors of bronze and cuts in two the bars of iron. (Jes 45,2)17 Some were fools through their sinful ways, and because of their iniquities suffered affliction; (Spr 1,7; Spr 14,9)18 they loathed any kind of food, and they drew near to the gates of death. (Hi 33,20; Hi 33,22; Hi 38,17; Ps 88,3)19 Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. (Ps 107,6; Ps 107,13; Ps 107,28)20 He sent out his word and healed them, and delivered them from their destruction. (2Kön 20,5; Hi 33,29; Ps 30,2; Ps 103,4; Ps 147,15; Ps 147,18; Mt 8,8)21 Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man! (Ps 107,8; Ps 107,15; Ps 107,31)22 And let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving, and tell of his deeds in songs of joy! (Ps 9,11; Ps 50,14; Ps 105,43; Ps 118,17)23 Some went down to the sea in ships, doing business on the great waters; (Jes 42,10)24 they saw the deeds of the Lord, his wondrous works in the deep.25 For he commanded and raised the stormy wind, which lifted up the waves of the sea. (Ps 105,31; Ps 105,34; Ps 148,8; Jon 1,4)26 They mounted up to heaven; they went down to the depths; their courage melted away in their evil plight; (Ps 22,14; Ps 119,28)27 they reeled and staggered like drunken men and were at their wits’ end.[2] (Hi 12,25; Jes 19,3; Jes 24,20; Jes 29,9)28 Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. (Ps 107,6; Ps 107,13; Ps 107,19)29 He made the storm be still, and the waves of the sea were hushed. (Ps 65,7)30 Then they were glad that the waters[3] were quiet, and he brought them to their desired haven.31 Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man! (Ps 107,8; Ps 107,15; Ps 107,21)32 Let them extol him in the congregation of the people, and praise him in the assembly of the elders. (Ps 22,22; Ps 22,25; Ps 99,5)33 He turns rivers into a desert, springs of water into thirsty ground, (Jes 42,15; Jes 50,2)34 a fruitful land into a salty waste, because of the evil of its inhabitants. (1Mo 13,10; 1Mo 14,3; 1Mo 19,24; 5Mo 29,23)35 He turns a desert into pools of water, a parched land into springs of water. (Hi 38,26; Ps 114,8; Jes 35,6; Jes 41,18; Jes 43,19)36 And there he lets the hungry dwell, and they establish a city to live in; (Ps 107,4; Ps 107,7)37 they sow fields and plant vineyards and get a fruitful yield.38 By his blessing they multiply greatly, and he does not let their livestock diminish. (1Mo 12,2; 1Mo 17,20; 2Mo 1,7)39 When they are diminished and brought low through oppression, evil, and sorrow,40 he pours contempt on princes and makes them wander in trackless wastes; (5Mo 32,10; Hi 12,21; Hi 12,24)41 but he raises up the needy out of affliction and makes their families like flocks. (1Sam 2,8; Hi 21,11; Ps 113,7)42 The upright see it and are glad, and all wickedness shuts its mouth. (Hi 22,19; Ps 63,11)43 Whoever is wise, let him attend to these things; let them consider the steadfast love of the Lord. (Ps 64,9; Jer 9,12; Hos 14,9)
