1The whole Israelite community set out from the Desert of Sin, travelling from place to place as the Lord commanded. They camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink.2So they quarrelled with Moses and said, ‘Give us water to drink.’ Moses replied, ‘Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you put the Lord to the test?’3But the people were thirsty for water there, and they grumbled against Moses. They said, ‘Why did you bring us up out of Egypt to make us and our children and livestock die of thirst?’4Then Moses cried out to the Lord, ‘What am I to do with these people? They are almost ready to stone me.’5The Lord answered Moses, ‘Go out in front of the people. Take with you some of the elders of Israel and take in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go.6I will stand there before you by the rock at Horeb. Strike the rock, and water will come out of it for the people to drink.’ So Moses did this in the sight of the elders of Israel.7And he called the place Massah[1] and Meribah[2] because the Israelites quarrelled and because they tested the Lord saying, ‘Is the Lord among us or not?’
The Amalekites defeated
8The Amalekites came and attacked the Israelites at Rephidim.9Moses said to Joshua, ‘Choose some of our men and go out to fight the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on top of the hill with the staff of God in my hands.’10So Joshua fought the Amalekites as Moses had ordered, and Moses, Aaron and Hur went to the top of the hill.11As long as Moses held up his hands, the Israelites were winning, but whenever he lowered his hands, the Amalekites were winning.12When Moses’ hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up – one on one side, one on the other – so that his hands remained steady till sunset.13So Joshua overcame the Amalekite army with the sword.14Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘Write this on a scroll as something to be remembered and make sure that Joshua hears it, because I will completely blot out the name of Amalek from under heaven.’15Moses built an altar and called it The Lord is my Banner.16He said, ‘Because hands were lifted up against[3] the throne of the Lord,[4] the Lord will be at war against the Amalekites from generation to generation.’

Streit und Murren in Massa und Meriba. Wasser aus dem Felsen
1Und die ganze Gemeinde der Kinder Israels zog aus der Wüste Sin ihre Tagereisen, nach dem Befehl des HERRN, und sie lagerte sich in Rephidim; aber da hatte das Volk kein Wasser zu trinken. (Ex 16:1; Nu 33:12)2Darum stritt das Volk mit Mose, und sie sprachen: Gebt uns Wasser, dass wir trinken! Mose sprach zu ihnen: Was streitet ihr mit mir? Warum versucht ihr den HERRN? (Ex 17:7; De 6:16; Ps 78:18; Ps 78:41; Ps 95:8)3Als nun das Volk dort nach Wasser dürstete, da murrten sie gegen Mose und sprachen: Warum hast du uns aus Ägypten heraufgeführt, um uns und unsere Kinder und unser Vieh vor Durst sterben zu lassen? (Ex 14:11; Ex 16:2)4Da schrie Mose zum HERRN und sprach: Was soll ich mit diesem Volk tun? Es fehlt nicht viel, und sie werden mich noch steinigen! (Ex 7:20; Nu 20:8)6Siehe, ich will dort vor dir auf dem Felsen am Horeb stehen; und du sollst den Felsen schlagen, und es wird Wasser herauslaufen, damit das Volk zu trinken hat. Und Mose tat dies vor den Augen der Ältesten Israels. (De 8:15; Ne 9:15; Ps 105:41)7Da gab man dem Ort den Namen Massa und Meriba, wegen der Herausforderung der Kinder Israels, und weil sie den HERRN versucht und gesagt hatten: Ist der HERR in unserer Mitte oder nicht? Israels Kampf gegen Amalek
8Da kam Amalek und kämpfte gegen Israel in Rephidim. (Ge 36:12; Ge 36:16; 1Ch 4:43)9Und Mose sprach zu Josua[1]: Erwähle uns Männer und zieh aus, kämpfe gegen Amalek! Morgen will ich auf der Spitze des Hügels stehen, mit dem Stab Gottes in meiner Hand. (Ex 4:20; Ex 33:11; Nu 13:8; Nu 13:16; Jud 7:4)10Und Josua machte es so, wie Mose ihm sagte, und er kämpfte gegen Amalek. Mose aber und Aaron und Hur stiegen auf die Spitze des Hügels. (Ex 24:14)11Und es geschah, solange Mose seine Hand aufhob, hatte Israel die Oberhand; wenn er aber seine Hand sinken ließ, hatte Amalek die Oberhand. (Ps 44:5; Lu 18:11; Ro 15:30; Jas 5:16)12Aber die Hände Moses wurden schwer, darum nahmen sie einen Stein und legten den unter ihn, und er setzte sich darauf. Aaron aber und Hur stützten seine Hände, auf jeder Seite einer. So blieben seine Hände fest, bis die Sonne unterging. (Jos 8:26; Ps 69:4; Mt 26:40)13Und Josua überwältigte Amalek und sein Volk mit der Schärfe des Schwertes. (Jos 10:28; Jos 10:32; Jos 10:37; Jos 10:42; Jos 11:12)14Da sprach der HERR zu Mose: Schreibe das zum Gedenken in ein Buch und präge es den Ohren Josuas ein: Ich will das Andenken Amaleks ganz und gar austilgen unter dem Himmel! (Nu 24:20; De 25:19)15Und Mose baute einen Altar und nannte ihn »Der HERR ist mein Kriegsbanner«. (Ps 60:6; Isa 11:10; Isa 18:3; Isa 49:22)16Und er sprach: Weil eine Hand [zum Schwur erhoben] ist auf dem Thron des HERRN, soll der Krieg des HERRN gegen Amalek währen von Geschlecht zu Geschlecht!
