1The whole Israelite community set out from Elim and came to the Desert of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after they had come out of Egypt.2In the desert the whole community grumbled against Moses and Aaron.3The Israelites said to them, ‘If only we had died by the Lord’s hand in Egypt! There we sat round pots of meat and ate all the food we wanted, but you have brought us out into this desert to starve this entire assembly to death.’4Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘I will rain down bread from heaven for you. The people are to go out each day and gather enough for that day. In this way I will test them and see whether they will follow my instructions.5On the sixth day they are to prepare what they bring in, and that is to be twice as much as they gather on the other days.’6So Moses and Aaron said to all the Israelites, ‘In the evening you will know that it was the Lord who brought you out of Egypt,7and in the morning you will see the glory of the Lord, because he has heard your grumbling against him. Who are we, that you should grumble against us?’8Moses also said, ‘You will know that it was the Lord when he gives you meat to eat in the evening and all the bread you want in the morning, because he has heard your grumbling against him. Who are we? You are not grumbling against us, but against the Lord.’9Then Moses told Aaron, ‘Say to the entire Israelite community, “Come before the Lord, for he has heard your grumbling.” ’10While Aaron was speaking to the whole Israelite community, they looked towards the desert, and there was the glory of the Lord appearing in the cloud.11The Lord said to Moses,12‘I have heard the grumbling of the Israelites. Tell them, “At twilight you will eat meat, and in the morning you will be filled with bread. Then you will know that I am the Lord your God.” ’13That evening quail came and covered the camp, and in the morning there was a layer of dew around the camp.14When the dew was gone, thin flakes like frost on the ground appeared on the desert floor.15When the Israelites saw it, they said to each other, ‘What is it?’ For they did not know what it was. Moses said to them, ‘It is the bread the Lord has given you to eat.16This is what the Lord has commanded: “Everyone is to gather as much as they need. Take an omer[1] for each person you have in your tent.” ’17The Israelites did as they were told; some gathered much, some little.18And when they measured it by the omer, the one who gathered much did not have too much, and the one who gathered little did not have too little. Everyone had gathered just as much as they needed.19Then Moses said to them, ‘No-one is to keep any of it until morning.’20However, some of them paid no attention to Moses; they kept part of it until morning, but it was full of maggots and began to smell. So Moses was angry with them.21Each morning everyone gathered as much as they needed, and when the sun grew hot, it melted away.22On the sixth day, they gathered twice as much – two omers[2] for each person – and the leaders of the community came and reported this to Moses.23He said to them, ‘This is what the Lord commanded: “Tomorrow is to be a day of sabbath rest, a holy sabbath to the Lord. So bake what you want to bake and boil what you want to boil. Save whatever is left and keep it until morning.” ’24So they saved it until morning, as Moses commanded, and it did not stink or get maggots in it.25‘Eat it today,’ Moses said, ‘because today is a sabbath to the Lord. You will not find any of it on the ground today.26Six days you are to gather it, but on the seventh day, the Sabbath, there will not be any.’27Nevertheless, some of the people went out on the seventh day to gather it, but they found none.28Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘How long will you[3] refuse to keep my commands and my instructions?29Bear in mind that the Lord has given you the Sabbath; that is why on the sixth day he gives you bread for two days. Everyone is to stay where they are on the seventh day; no-one is to go out.’30So the people rested on the seventh day.31The people of Israel called the bread manna.[4] It was white like coriander seed and tasted like wafers made with honey.32Moses said, ‘This is what the Lord has commanded: “Take an omer of manna and keep it for the generations to come, so they can see the bread I gave you to eat in the wilderness when I brought you out of Egypt.” ’33So Moses said to Aaron, ‘Take a jar and put an omer of manna in it. Then place it before the Lord to be kept for the generations to come.’34As the Lord commanded Moses, Aaron put the manna with the tablets of the covenant law, that it might be preserved.35The Israelites ate manna for forty years, until they came to a land that was settled; they ate manna until they reached the border of Canaan.36(An omer is one-tenth of an ephah.)

(Ex 15:24; Ps 106:25; 1Co 10:10)3Und die Kinder Israels sprachen zu ihnen: Wären wir doch durch die Hand des HERRN im Land Ägypten gestorben, als wir bei den Fleischtöpfen saßen und Brot in Fülle zu essen hatten! Denn ihr habt uns in diese Wüste hinausgeführt, um diese ganze Gemeinde verhungern zu lassen! (Nu 11:4; Nu 14:2)4Da sprach der HERR zu Mose: Siehe, ich will euch Brot vom Himmel regnen lassen; dann soll das Volk hinausgehen und täglich sammeln, was es braucht, damit ich es prüfe, ob es in meinem Gesetz wandeln wird oder nicht. (Nu 16:11; 1Co 4:3)8Weiter sprach Mose: Der HERR wird euch am Abend Fleisch zu essen geben und am Morgen Brot in Fülle; denn er, der HERR, hat euer Murren gehört, womit ihr gegen ihn gemurrt habt. Denn was sind wir? Euer Murren richtet sich nicht gegen uns, sondern gegen den HERRN! Das Manna — die wunderbare Nahrung des Volkes Gottes
15Und als es die Kinder Israels sahen, sprachen sie untereinander: Was ist das?, denn sie wussten nicht, was es war. Mose aber sprach zu ihnen: Dies ist das Brot, das euch der HERR zur Speise gegeben hat! (Ex 16:4; De 8:3; De 8:16; Ne 9:15; Joh 6:31; Joh 6:58; 1Co 10:3; Re 2:17)16Das ist aber der Befehl, den der HERR gegeben hat: Jeder soll davon sammeln, so viel er zum Essen benötigt, einen Gomer je Kopf, nach der Zahl eurer Seelen; jeder nehme für die, die in seinem Zelt sind. (Ex 16:18; Ex 16:33; Ex 16:36)17Und die Kinder Israels machten es so und sammelten, der eine viel, der andere wenig.18Als man es aber mit dem Gomer maß, da hatte der, welcher viel gesammelt hatte, keinen Überfluss, und der, welcher wenig gesammelt hatte, hatte keinen Mangel, sondern jeder hatte für sich gesammelt, so viel er zum Essen brauchte. (2Co 8:14)19Und Mose sprach zu ihnen: Niemand soll etwas davon übrig lassen bis zum anderen Morgen! (Mt 6:34)20Aber sie gehorchten Mose nicht; denn etliche ließen davon übrig bis zum Morgen. Da wuchsen Würmer darin, und es wurde stinkend. Und Mose wurde zornig über sie. (Mt 6:19; Lu 12:19; Heb 13:5; Jas 5:2)21So sammelten sie es jeden Morgen, jeder so viel er zum Essen brauchte; wenn aber die Sonne heiß schien, zerschmolz es. (Ps 90:14; La 3:23)22Und es geschah am sechsten Tag, da sammelten sie doppelt so viel Brot, zwei Gomer für jede Person. Da kamen alle Obersten der Gemeinde und berichteten es Mose. (Le 25:21)23Und er sprach zu ihnen: Das ist es, was der HERR gesagt hat: Morgen ist eine Ruhe, ein heiliger Sabbat des HERRN! Was ihr backen wollt, das backt, und was ihr kochen wollt, das kocht; was aber übrig ist, das legt beiseite, damit es bis morgen aufbewahrt wird! (Ge 2:2; Ge 20:8; Ge 31:15; Ge 35:2; Le 23:3)24Und sie legten es beiseite bis zum Morgen, wie Mose geboten hatte; und es wurde nicht stinkend, und es war auch kein Wurm darin. (Ex 16:20; Ex 16:23)25Da sprach Mose: Esst das heute! Denn heute ist der Sabbat des HERRN; ihr werdet es heute nicht auf dem Feld finden. (Ex 16:29; Ne 9:14)26Sechs Tage sollt ihr es sammeln, aber am siebten Tag ist der Sabbat, da wird keines zu finden sein. (Ex 16:27; Ex 20:9; De 5:13; Lu 13:14)27Es geschah aber am siebten Tag, dass etliche vom Volk hinausgingen, um zu sammeln; und sie fanden nichts.28Da sprach der HERR zu Mose: Wie lange weigert ihr euch, meine Gebote und meine Anweisungen zu halten? (Nu 14:11; 2Ki 17:14; Ps 78:10; Ps 78:22; Eze 5:6; Eze 20:13)29Seht, der HERR hat euch den Sabbat gegeben; darum gibt er euch am sechsten Tag für zwei Tage Brot; so soll nun jeder an seiner Stelle bleiben, und niemand soll am siebten Tag seinen Platz verlassen! (Ex 20:8; Ne 9:14; Mr 2:27)30So ruhte das Volk am siebten Tag. (Le 23:3; De 5:12; Heb 4:9)31Und das Haus Israel gab ihm den Namen Manna. Es war aber wie Koriandersamen, weiß, und hatte einen Geschmack wie Honigkuchen. (Nu 11:7)32Und Mose sprach: Das ist es, was der HERR geboten hat: Einen Gomer davon sollt ihr aufbewahren für eure Nachkommen, damit sie das Brot sehen, mit dem ich euch in der Wüste gespeist habe, als ich euch aus dem Land Ägypten herausführte! (Ex 13:9; Ps 103:2; Ps 103:5)33Und Mose sprach zu Aaron: Nimm einen Krug und fülle einen Gomer voll Manna hinein und stelle es vor den HERRN, zur Aufbewahrung für eure Nachkommen! (Heb 9:4)34Wie der HERR dem Mose geboten hatte, so stellte es Aaron dort vor das Zeugnis[1], zur Aufbewahrung. (Ex 25:16; Nu 17:10; 1Ki 8:9; Heb 9:4)35Und die Kinder Israels aßen das Manna 40 Jahre lang, bis sie zu dem Land kamen, in dem sie wohnen sollten; bis sie an die Grenze Kanaans kamen, aßen sie das Manna. (De 2:7; De 8:3; Ne 9:20; Joh 6:31; Joh 6:49)36Ein Gomer aber ist der zehnte Teil eines Epha. (Eze 45:11)
