1By the humility and gentleness of Christ, I appeal to you – I, Paul, who am ‘timid’ when face to face with you, but ‘bold’ towards you when away!2I beg you that when I come I may not have to be as bold as I expect to be towards some people who think that we live by the standards of this world.3For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does.4The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds.5We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.6And we will be ready to punish every act of disobedience, once your obedience is complete.7You are judging by appearances.[1] If anyone is confident that they belong to Christ, they should consider again that we belong to Christ just as much as they do.8So even if I boast somewhat freely about the authority the Lord gave us for building you up rather than tearing you down, I will not be ashamed of it.9I do not want to seem to be trying to frighten you with my letters.10For some say, ‘His letters are weighty and forceful, but in person he is unimpressive and his speaking amounts to nothing.’11Such people should realise that what we are in our letters when we are absent, we will be in our actions when we are present.12We do not dare to classify or compare ourselves with some who commend themselves. When they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they are not wise.13We, however, will not boast beyond proper limits, but will confine our boasting to the sphere of service God himself has assigned to us, a sphere that also includes you.14We are not going too far in our boasting, as would be the case if we had not come to you, for we did get as far as you with the gospel of Christ.15Neither do we go beyond our limits by boasting of work done by others. Our hope is that, as your faith continues to grow, our sphere of activity among you will greatly expand,16so that we can preach the gospel in the regions beyond you. For we do not want to boast about work already done in someone else’s territory.17But, ‘Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.’ (Jer 9:24)18For it is not the one who commends himself who is approved, but the one whom the Lord commends.

1Ich selbst aber, Paulus, ermahne euch angesichts der Sanftmut und Freundlichkeit des Christus, der ich von Angesicht zu Angesicht demütig bin bei euch, abwesend aber mutig gegen euch; (Mic 6:8; Mt 11:29; Ro 12:1; 2Co 8:8; 2Co 10:10)2und ich bitte euch, dass ich nicht bei meiner Anwesenheit mutig sein muss in der Zuversicht, mit der ich entschlossen gegen etliche aufzutreten gedenke, die von uns meinen, wir würden gemäß dem Fleisch wandeln.[1] (Ro 8:1; 1Co 4:21; 2Co 1:17; 2Co 12:16; 2Co 13:2; 2Co 13:10)3Denn obgleich wir im Fleisch wandeln, so kämpfen wir doch nicht nach Art des Fleisches; (Ro 8:12; Ga 2:20; 1Pe 4:2)4denn die Waffen unseres Kampfes sind nicht fleischlich, sondern mächtig durch Gott zur Zerstörung von Festungen, (Jer 1:10; Jer 23:29; 1Co 2:4; 2Co 13:3; Eph 6:13; 1Th 5:8; Heb 4:12)5sodass wir Vernunftschlüsse zerstören und jede Höhe, die sich gegen die Erkenntnis Gottes erhebt, und jeden Gedanken gefangen nehmen zum Gehorsam gegen Christus, (Ro 1:5; Ro 15:18; 1Co 1:19)6und auch bereit sind, jeden Ungehorsam zu bestrafen, sobald euer Gehorsam vollständig geworden ist. Wenn jemand von sich selbst überzeugt ist, dass er Christus angehört, so möge er andererseits von sich selbst aus den Schluss ziehen, dass, gleichwie er Christus angehört, so auch wir Christus angehören. (Joh 7:24; 2Co 5:14; 2Co 10:1; 2Co 11:22; 2Co 13:5)8Denn wenn ich mich auch noch etwas mehr rühmen wollte wegen unserer Vollmacht, die der Herr uns gegeben hat zu eurer Erbauung und nicht zu eurer Zerstörung, so würde ich nicht zuschanden werden; (1Co 5:4; 2Co 10:6; 2Co 12:6; Eph 4:11)9doch ich will nicht den Anschein erwecken, als wollte ich euch durch die Briefe einschüchtern. (1Co 4:5; 1Co 4:19; 2Co 10:10)10Denn die Briefe, sagt einer, sind gewichtig und stark, aber die leibliche Gegenwart ist schwach und die Rede verachtenswert. (2Co 10:1; 2Co 11:6)11Der Betreffende soll aber bedenken: So wie wir als Abwesende mit dem Wort in Briefen sind, ebenso werden wir als Anwesende auch mit der Tat sein. (1Co 4:19; 2Co 12:20; 2Co 13:2; 2Co 13:10)12Denn wir wagen es nicht, uns denen zuzurechnen oder gleichzustellen, die sich selbst empfehlen; sie aber sind unverständig, indem sie sich an sich selbst messen und sich mit sich selbst vergleichen. (Pr 3:7; Pr 27:2; Ro 12:3; 2Co 3:1; 2Co 12:11; Ga 6:3)13Wir aber wollen uns nicht ins Maßlose rühmen, sondern nach dem Maß des Wirkungskreises, den uns Gott als Maß zugemessen hat, nämlich dass wir auch bis zu euch gelangen sollten. (1Co 3:5; 1Co 13:4)14Denn wir strecken uns nicht zu weit aus, als wären wir nicht bis zu euch gelangt; wir sind ja auch mit dem Evangelium von Christus bis zu euch gekommen. (1Co 4:15; 1Co 9:1)15Wir rühmen uns auch nicht ins Maßlose aufgrund der Arbeiten anderer; wir haben aber die Hoffnung, wenn euer Glaube wächst, bei euch noch viel mehr Raum zu gewinnen, unserem Wirkungskreis gemäß, (Ro 1:5; Ro 1:17)16um das Evangelium auch in den Gebieten jenseits von euch zu verkündigen, und uns nicht im Wirkungskreis eines anderen Ruhm zu holen, wo die Arbeit schon getan ist. (Ro 15:20)17»Wer sich aber rühmen will, der rühme sich des Herrn!«[2] (Jer 9:23; 1Co 1:31)18Denn nicht der ist bewährt, der sich selbst empfiehlt, sondern der, den der Herr empfiehlt.
