The covenant renewed at Shechem

1 Then Joshua assembled all the tribes of Israel at Shechem. He summoned the elders, leaders, judges and officials of Israel, and they presented themselves before God. 2 Joshua said to all the people, ‘This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: “Long ago your ancestors, including Terah the father of Abraham and Nahor, lived beyond the River Euphrates and worshipped other gods. 3 But I took your father Abraham from the land beyond the Euphrates and led him throughout Canaan and gave him many descendants. I gave him Isaac, 4 and to Isaac I gave Jacob and Esau. I assigned the hill country of Seir to Esau, but Jacob and his family went down to Egypt. 5 ‘ “Then I sent Moses and Aaron, and I afflicted the Egyptians by what I did there, and I brought you out. 6 When I brought your people out of Egypt, you came to the sea, and the Egyptians pursued them with chariots and horsemen^[1] as far as the Red Sea.^[2] 7 But they cried to the Lord for help, and he put darkness between you and the Egyptians; he brought the sea over them and covered them. You saw with your own eyes what I did to the Egyptians. Then you lived in the wilderness for a long time. 8 ‘ “I brought you to the land of the Amorites who lived east of the Jordan. They fought against you, but I gave them into your hands. I destroyed them from before you, and you took possession of their land. 9 When Balak son of Zippor, the king of Moab, prepared to fight against Israel, he sent for Balaam son of Beor to put a curse on you. 10 But I would not listen to Balaam, so he blessed you again and again, and I delivered you out of his hand. 11 ‘ “Then you crossed the Jordan and came to Jericho. The citizens of Jericho fought against you, as did also the Amorites, Perizzites, Canaanites, Hittites, Girgashites, Hivites and Jebusites, but I gave them into your hands. 12 I sent the hornet ahead of you, which drove them out before you – also the two Amorite kings. You did not do it with your own sword and bow. 13 So I gave you a land on which you did not toil and cities you did not build; and you live in them and eat from vineyards and olive groves that you did not plant.” 14 ‘Now fear the Lord and serve him with all faithfulness. Throw away the gods your ancestors worshipped beyond the River Euphrates and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. 15 But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.’ 16 Then the people answered, ‘Far be it from us to forsake the Lord to serve other gods! 17 It was the Lord our God himself who brought us and our parents up out of Egypt, from that land of slavery, and performed those great signs before our eyes. He protected us on our entire journey and among all the nations through which we travelled. 18 And the Lord drove out before us all the nations, including the Amorites, who lived in the land. We too will serve the Lord, because he is our God.’ 19 Joshua said to the people, ‘You are not able to serve the Lord. He is a holy God; he is a jealous God. He will not forgive your rebellion and your sins. 20 If you forsake the Lord and serve foreign gods, he will turn and bring disaster on you and make an end of you, after he has been good to you.’ 21 But the people said to Joshua, ‘No! We will serve the Lord.’ 22 Then Joshua said, ‘You are witnesses against yourselves that you have chosen to serve the Lord.’ ‘Yes, we are witnesses,’ they replied. 23 ‘Now then,’ said Joshua, ‘throw away the foreign gods that are among you and yield your hearts to the Lord, the God of Israel.’ 24 And the people said to Joshua, ‘We will serve the Lord our God and obey him.’ 25 On that day Joshua made a covenant for the people, and there at Shechem he reaffirmed for them decrees and laws. 26 And Joshua recorded these things in the Book of the Law of God. Then he took a large stone and set it up there under the oak near the holy place of the Lord. 27 ‘See!’ he said to all the people. ‘This stone will be a witness against us. It has heard all the words the Lord has said to us. It will be a witness against you if you are untrue to your God.’ 28 Then Joshua dismissed the people, each to their own inheritance.

Buried in the promised land

29 After these things, Joshua son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died at the age of a hundred and ten. 30 And they buried him in the land of his inheritance, at Timnath Serah^[3] in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash. (Jud 2:9) 31 Israel served the Lord throughout the lifetime of Joshua and of the elders who outlived him and who had experienced everything the Lord had done for Israel. 32 And Joseph’s bones, which the Israelites had brought up from Egypt, were buried at Shechem in the tract of land that Jacob bought for a hundred pieces of silver^[4] from the sons of Hamor, the father of Shechem. This became the inheritance of Joseph’s descendants. 33 And Eleazar son of Aaron died and was buried at Gibeah, which had been allotted to his son Phinehas in the hill country of Ephraim.

1 يک بار ديگر، يوشع تمام قبايل اسرائيل را با بزرگان و رهبران و قضات و مقامات قوم اسرائيل در شكيم احضار كرد و آنها آمده، در حضور خدا ايستادند. 2 يوشع لب به سخن گشود و گفت كه خداوند، خدای اسرائيل میفرمايد: «در گذشته جد شما تارح، پدر ابراهيم و ناحور، در سمت شرقی رود فرات میزيست و بتپرست بود. 3 ولی من ابراهيم، پسر تارح را از آن سوس رود فرات برداشته، به سرزمين كنعان آوردم و او را در سراسر اين سرزمين گرداندم و نسل او را زياد كردم. اسحاق را به او بخشيدم 4 و به اسحاق نيز يعقوب و عيسو را دادم. نواحی اطراف كوه سعير را به عيسو بخشيدم. يعقوب و فرزندانش به مصر رفتند. 5 بعد موسی و هارون را فرستادم و بلای عظيمی بر سر مصریها آوردم. سرانجام، اجداد شما را از اسارت مصریها آزاد نمودم. 6 وقتی به ساحل دريای سرخ رسيدند، مصریها با عرابهها و سواران به تعقيب ايشان پرداختند. 7 در اين هنگام، آنها از من كمک خواستند و من ميان آنها و لشكر مصر تاريكی ايجاد نمودم. سپس آب دريا را بر سر مصریها ريختم و آنها را در دريا غرق كردم. پدران شما آنچه را كه بر سر مصریها آوردم با چشمان خود ديدند. بعد از آن، قوم اسرائيل سالهای زيادی را در بيابان گذرانيدند. 8 «سرانجام شما را به سرزمين اموریها در آن طرف رود اردن آوردم. اموریها با شما جنگيدند، ولی من ايشان را نابود كردم و زمينهايشان را به شما دادم. 9 سپس بالاق، پادشاه موآب جنگ را با شما آغاز نمود و به دنبال بلعام، پسر بعور فرستاد تا شما را لعنت كند. 10 اما من دعای او را اجابت ننمودم، بلكه او را وادار ساختم تا شما را بركت بدهد و به اين ترتيب شما را از دست بالاق نجات دادم. 11 سپس از رود اردن گذشتيد و به اريحا آمديد. جنگجويان اريحا و بسياری از قبايل ديگر از قبيل اموریها، فرزیها، كنعانیها، حيتیها، جرجاشیها، حویها و يبوسیها يكی پس از ديگری با شما جنگيدند. اما من همهٔ آنها را مغلوب شما ساختم. 12 زنبورهای سرخ به سراغ اموریها فرستادم و دو پادشاه اموری را با مردمانشان از پيش روی شما راندم. شما اين پيروزی را با نيزه و كمان به دست نياورديد! 13 زمينی را كه در آن زحمت نكشيده بوديد و شهرهايی را كه خود بنا نكرده بوديد، به شما بخشيدم تا در آن ساكن شويد و از ميوهٔ تاكستانها و باغهای زيتونی كه خود زحمت كاشتن آنها را نكشيده بوديد، بخوريد. 14 «پس خداوند را احترام نماييد و با صداقت و راستی او را خدمت كنيد. بتهايی را كه زمانی اجدادتان در آن سوس رود فرات و در مصر پرستش مینمودند، از خود دور كنيد و فقط خداوند را عبادت نماييد. 15 امروز تصميم خود را بگيريد. آيا میخواهيد از خداوند پيروی كنيد يا از بتهايی كه اجداد شما در آن سوس رود فرات میپرستيدند، و يا از بتهای اموریهايی كه در سرزمينشان ساكنيد؟ ولی اين را بدانيد كه من و خانوادهام خداوند را عبادت خواهيم نمود.» 16 مردم اسرائيل در پاسخ او گفتند: «وای بر ما اگر خداوند را ترک نماييم و بتها را پرستش كنيم؛ 17 زيرا خداوند، خدای ما بود كه قوم ما را از بردگی مصریان رهانيد و در پيش چشمانمان معجزات شگفتانگيزی انجام داد. در تمام طول راه و هنگامی كه از ميان سرزمينهای دشمنان میگذشتيم، او ما را حفظ كرد. 18 خداوند بود كه هنگام ورود ما به اين سرزمين، قوم اموری و ساير قومها را از اينجا بيرون راند. پس ما نيز از خداوند پيروی خواهيم كرد، زيرا او خدای ماست.» 19 اما يوشع در پاسخ ايشان گفت: «پيروی از خداوند كار آسانی نيست، زيرا او قدوس و بسيار غيور است و از گناهانتان نخواهد گذشت. 20 اگر او را ترک كرده بتها را بپرستيد، او بر ضد شما برخواهد خاست و شما را مجازات خواهد كرد، و با وجود آنكه به شما احسان نموده است، شما را از بين خواهد برد.» 21 قوم اسرائيل در جواب يوشع گفتند: «ولی ما قول میدهيم از خداوند پيروی كنيم!» 22 يوشع گفت: «پس خود شما شاهد هستيد كه قول دادهايد از خداوند پيروی نماييد.» گفتند: «بلی، ما خود، شاهد هستيم.» 23 يوشع گفت: «بسيار خوب، پس حال بايد بتهايی را كه در ميان شما هستند از خود دور كنيد و دلهای خود را به خداوند، خدای اسرائيل نزديک سازيد.» 24 مردم به يوشع گفتند: «آری، ما فقط از خداوند، خدای خود اطاعت و پيروی خواهيم كرد.» 25 يوشع آن روز در شكيم با ايشان پيمان بست و آنها را متعهد به انجام قوانين و مقررات آن نمود. 26 او تمام اين سخنان را در كتاب قانون خدا نوشت. سپس سنگی بزرگ گرفته، آن را در پای درخت بلوطی كه در كنار خيمهٔ عبادت بود، بر پا داشت. 27 آنگاه يوشع به تمام قوم اسرائيل گفت: «اين سنگ، شاهد پيمان شما با خداوند است و تمام سخنانی را كه خداوند به ما فرمود، شنيده است. پس اگر از پيروی خدا برگرديد، همين سنگ بر ضد شما شهادت خواهد داد.» 28 بعد از آن، يوشع مردم را مرخص نمود تا هر کس به ملک خود برود.

مرگ يوشع و العازار

29 چندی بعد، يوشع خدمتگزار خداوند در سن صد و ده سالگی درگذشت 30 و او را در تمنه سارح در كوهستان افرايم به طرف شمال كوه جاعش كه ملک خود او بود دفن كردند. 31 قوم اسرائيل در تمام مدت زندگانی يوشع و نيز ريشسفيدان قوم كه پس از او زنده مانده بودند و شخصاً اعمال شگفتانگيز خداوند را در حق اسرائيل ديده بودند، نسبت به خداوند وفادار ماندند. 32 استخوانهای يوسف را كه اسرائیلیها موقع خروج از مصر با خود آورده بودند، در شكيم در قطعه زمينی كه يعقوب از پسران حمور به صد تكه نقره خريده بود دفن كردند. (اين زمين در ملک پسران يوسف قرار داشت.) 33 العازار، پسر هارون نيز درگذشت و او را در جبعه كه در ملک پسرش فينحاس واقع بود، در كوهستان افرايم دفن كردند.
