1[1] Nevertheless, there will be no more gloom for those who were in distress. In the past he humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the future he will honour Galilee of the nations, by the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan –2The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned.3You have enlarged the nation and increased their joy; they rejoice before you as people rejoice at the harvest, as warriors rejoice when dividing the plunder.4For as in the day of Midian’s defeat, you have shattered the yoke that burdens them, the bar across their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor.5Every warrior’s boot used in battle and every garment rolled in blood will be destined for burning, will be fuel for the fire.6For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.7Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and for ever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.
The Lord’s anger against Israel
8The Lord has sent a message against Jacob; it will fall on Israel.9All the people will know it – Ephraim and the inhabitants of Samaria – who say with pride and arrogance of heart,10‘The bricks have fallen down, but we will rebuild with dressed stone; the fig-trees have been felled, but we will replace them with cedars.’11But the Lord has strengthened Rezin’s foes against them and has spurred their enemies on.12Arameans from the east and Philistines from the west have devoured Israel with open mouth. Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away, his hand is still upraised.13But the people have not returned to him who struck them, nor have they sought the Lord Almighty.14So the Lord will cut off from Israel both head and tail, both palm branch and reed in a single day;15the elders and dignitaries are the head, the prophets who teach lies are the tail.16Those who guide this people mislead them, and those who are guided are led astray.17Therefore the Lord will take no pleasure in the young men, nor will he pity the fatherless and widows, for everyone is ungodly and wicked, every mouth speaks folly. Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away, his hand is still upraised.18Surely wickedness burns like a fire; it consumes briers and thorns, it sets the forest thickets ablaze, so that it rolls upwards in a column of smoke.19By the wrath of the Lord Almighty the land will be scorched and the people will be fuel for the fire; they will not spare one another.20On the right they will devour, but still be hungry; on the left they will eat, but not be satisfied. Each will feed on the flesh of their own offspring[2]:21Manasseh will feed on Ephraim, and Ephraim on Manasseh; together they will turn against Judah. Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away, his hand is still upraised.

اسم او«عجيب» خواهد بود!
1اما اين تاريكی برای قوم خدا كه در تنگی هستند تا ابد باقی نخواهد ماند. خدا سرزمين قبايل زبولون و نفتالی را در گذشته خوار و ذليل ساخته بود، اما در آينده او تمام اين سرزمين را از دريای مديترانه گرفته تا آن طرف اردن و حتی تا خود جليل كه بيگانگان در آن زندگی میكنند، مورد احترام قرار خواهد داد.2قومی كه در تاريكی راه میرفتند، نور عظيمی خواهند ديد. بر كسانی كه در سرزمين ظلمت زندگی میكردند، روشنايی خواهد تابيد.3ای خداوند، تو خوشی قوم خود را افزودی و به ايشان شادمانی بخشيدی. آنها همچون كسانی كه با شادی محصول را درو میكنند، و مانند آنانی كه با خوشحالی غنايم را بين خود تقسيم مینمايند، در حضور تو شادمانی میكنند.4زيرا تو يوغی را كه بر گردن آنها بود شكستی و ايشان را از دست قوم تجاوزگر رهانيدی، همچنانكه در گذشته مديانیها را شكست داده، قومت را آزاد ساختی.5تمام اسلحهها و لباسهای جنگی كه به خون آغشتهاند خواهند سوخت و از بين خواهند رفت.6زيرا فرزندی برای ما به دنیا آمده! پسری به ما بخشيده شده! او بر ما سلطنت خواهد كرد. نام او«عجيب»، «مشير»، «خدای قدير»، «پدر جاودانی» و«سرور سلامتی» خواهد بود.7او بر تخت پادشاهی داوود خواهد نشست و بر سرزمين او تا ابد سلطنت خواهد كرد. پايهٔ حكومتش را بر عدل و انصاف استوار خواهد ساخت، و گسترش فرمانروايی صلحپرور او را انتهايی نخواهد بود. خداوند قادر متعال چنين اراده فرموده و اين را انجام خواهد داد.
مجازات قوم اسرائيل
8خداوند فرموده كه قوم اسرائيل را مجازات خواهد كرد،9و تمام قوم كه در سامره و ساير شهرها هستند خواهند فهميد كه او اين كار را كرده است؛ زيرا اين قوم مغرور شدهاند و میگويند:10«هر چند خشتهای خانههای ما ريخته، ولی با سنگها آنها را بازسازی خواهيم كرد. هر چند تيرهای چوب افراغمان افتاده، اما به جای آنها تيرهای سروكار خواهيم گذاشت.»11خداوند دشمنان اسرائيل را عليه او برانگيخته است.12او سوریها را از شرق و فلسطينیها را از غرب فرستاده تا اسرائيل را ببلعند. با اين حال، خشم خداوند فروكش نكرده و دست او همچنان برای مجازات دراز است.13اسرائيل توبه نمیكند و به سوی خداوند برنمیگردد.14بنابراين، خداوند در يک روز مردم اسرائيل و رهبرانشان را مجازات خواهد كرد و سر و دم اين قوم را خواهد بريد!15ريشسفيدان و اشراف اسرائيل سر قوم هستند و انبيای كاذبش دم آن.16اينها كه هاديان قوم هستند قوم را به گمراهی و نابودی كشاندهاند.17خداوند جوانانشان را مجازات خواهد كرد و حتی بر بيوهزنان و يتيمانشان نيز رحم نخواهد نمود، زيرا همهٔ ايشان خدانشناس و شرور و دروغگو هستند. به اين سبب است كه هنوز خشم خدا فروكش نكرده و دست او برای مجازات ايشان دراز است.18-19شرارت اين قوم باعث شده غضب خداوند قادر متعال افروخته گردد و مانند آتشی كه خار و خس را میسوزاند و تمام جنگل را فرا میگيرد و دود غليظی به آسمان میفرستد، همه را بسوزاند. مردم مانند هيزم میسوزند و حتی برادر به برادر كمک نمیكند.20لقمه را از دست يكديگر میقاپند و میخورند اما سير نمیشوند. از شدت گرسنگی حتی بچههای خودشان را نيز میخورند!21قبيلهٔ منسی و قبيلهٔ افرايم بر ضد يكديگر، و هر دو بر ضد يهودا برخاستهاند. ولی با وجود اين خشم خداوند فروكش نمیكند و دست او هنوز برای مجازات ايشان دراز است.
