1Now Ahab told Jezebel everything Elijah had done and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword.2So Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah to say, ‘May the gods deal with me, be it ever so severely, if by this time tomorrow I do not make your life like that of one of them.’3Elijah was afraid[1] and ran for his life. When he came to Beersheba in Judah, he left his servant there,4while he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness. He came to a broom bush, sat down under it and prayed that he might die. ‘I have had enough, Lord,’ he said. ‘Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors.’5Then he lay down under the bush and fell asleep. All at once an angel touched him and said, ‘Get up and eat.’6He looked around, and there by his head was some bread baked over hot coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank and then lay down again.7The angel of the Lord came back a second time and touched him and said, ‘Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you.’8So he got up and ate and drank. Strengthened by that food, he travelled for forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God.
The Lord appears to Elijah
9There he went into a cave and spent the night. And the word of the Lord came to him: ‘What are you doing here, Elijah?’10He replied, ‘I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too.’11The Lord said, ‘Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.’ Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake.12After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.13When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave. Then a voice said to him, ‘What are you doing here, Elijah?’14He replied, ‘I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too.’15The Lord said to him, ‘Go back the way you came, and go to the Desert of Damascus. When you get there, anoint Hazael king over Aram.16Also, anoint Jehu son of Nimshi king over Israel, and anoint Elisha son of Shaphat from Abel Meholah to succeed you as prophet.17Jehu will put to death any who escape the sword of Hazael, and Elisha will put to death any who escape the sword of Jehu.18Yet I reserve seven thousand in Israel – all whose knees have not bowed down to Baal and whose mouths have not kissed him.’
The call of Elisha
19So Elijah went from there and found Elisha son of Shaphat. He was ploughing with twelve yoke of oxen, and he himself was driving the twelfth pair. Elijah went up to him and threw his cloak around him.20Elisha then left his oxen and ran after Elijah. ‘Let me kiss my father and mother goodbye,’ he said, ‘and then I will come with you.’ ‘Go back,’ Elijah replied. ‘What have I done to you?’21So Elisha left him and went back. He took his yoke of oxen and slaughtered them. He burned the ploughing equipment to cook the meat and gave it to the people, and they ate. Then he set out to follow Elijah and became his servant.

ايليا به حوريب فرار میكند
1وقتی اخاب پادشاه برای همسرش ايزابل تعريف كرد كه ايليا چه كرده و چطور انبيای بعل را كشته است؛2ايزابل برای ايليا اين پيغام را فرستاد: «تو انبيای مرا كشتی! به خدايانم قسم كه تا فردا همين موقع تو را خواهم كشت!»3وقتی ايليا اين پيغام را شنيد برخاست و از ترس جان خود به بئرشبع، يكی از شهرهای يهودا، فرار كرد. او نوكرش را در آنجا گذاشت4و خود، سر به بيابان نهاد و تمام روز راه رفت. در راه به درختی رسيد و زير آن نشست و آرزوی مرگ كرد و گفت: «ای خداوند، ديگر بس است! جانم را بگير و بگذار بميرم.»5او همانجا دراز كشيد و خوابيد. اما وقتی خوابيده بود، فرشتهای او را بيدار كرد و گفت: «برخيز و لقمه نانی بخور!»6ايليا بلند شد و به اطراف خود نگاه كرد و در كنارش يک نان روی سنگهای داغ و كوزهای آب ديد. پس نان را خورد و آب را نوشيد و دوباره خوابيد.7فرشتهٔ خداوند بار ديگر آمده، او را بيدار كرد و گفت: «بلند شو و بخور، چون راه طولانی در پيش داری.»8ايليا بلند شد، نان را خورد، آب را نوشيد و به نيروی همان خوراک چهل شبانه روز راه رفت و به كوه حوريب كه به كوه خدا مشهور است رسيد.9در آنجا او در غاری شب را به سر برد. ولی خداوند به او فرمود: «ايليا، اينجا چه میكنی؟»10ايليا جواب داد: «ای خداوند، خدای قادر متعال، من هميشه تو را خدمت كردهام. اما قوم اسرائيل عهد خود را با تو شكستهاند، قربانگاههايت را خراب كرده و تمام انبيای تو را كشتهاند و تنها من باقی ماندهام. حال میخواهند مرا هم بكشند.»11خداوند به او فرمود: «از اين غار بيرون بيا و روی كوه، در حضور من بايست.» وقتی ايليا در حضور خدا ايستاد، خدا از آنجا عبور كرد و باد شديدی در كوه پيچيد. وزش باد چنان شديد بود كه صخرهها از كوه فرو ريخت. اما خداوند در آن باد نبود. پس از باد، زلزلهای همه جا را لرزاند، ولی خداوند در ميان آن زلزله نيز نبود.12بعد از زلزله، شعلههای آتش افروخته شد، اما خداوند در آن هم نبود. بعد از آتش، صدايی ملايم به گوش رسيد.13ايليا وقتی آن صدا را شنيد، با ردای خود صورتش را پوشاند و به دهنه غار آمد و در آنجا ايستاد. آنگاه صدايی به او گفت: «ايليا، اينجا چه میكنی؟»14ايليا جواب داد: «ای خداوند، خدای قادر متعال من هميشه تو را خدمت كردهام. اما قوم اسرائيل عهد خود را با تو شكسته، قربانگاههايت را خراب كرده و تمام انبيای تو را كشتهاند و تنها من باقی ماندهام. حال میخواهند مرا هم بكشند.»15خداوند به او فرمود: «اكنون از راهی كه در اين بيابان است به دمشق برو. وقتی به آنجا رسيدی، حزائيل را به پادشاهی سوريه تدهين كن.16ييهو پسر نمشی را هم به پادشاهی اسرائيل تدهين كن و نيز اليشع پسر شافاط از اهالی آبل محوله را تدهين نما تا به جای تو نبی باشد.17بعد از اين هر كه از چنگ حزائيل رهايی يابد ييهو او را میكشد و هر کس از دست ييهو فرار كند، اليشع او را میكشد.18در ضمن بدان كه هنوز هفت هزار نفر در اسرائيل هستند كه هرگز در برابر بت بعل زانو نزدهاند و او را نبوسيدهاند.»
دعوت ايليا از اليشع
19پس ايليا روانه شد و اليشع را پيدا كرد. اليشع در يک گروه چند نفره، با دوازده جفت گاو مشغول شخم زدن زمين بود. يازده جفت جلوتر از او بودند و او با يک جفت گاو پشت سر همه بود. ايليا وقتی به اليشع رسيد ردای خود را روی دوش[1] او انداخت.20اليشع گاوها را گذاشت، به دنبال ايليا دويد و گفت: «اجازه بده اول بروم پدر و مادرم را ببوسم و با ايشان خداحافظی كنم، بعد با تو بيايم.» ايليا به او گفت: «اشكالی ندارد، برو و زود برگرد.»21آنگاه اليشع يک جفت گاو خود را سر بريد و با همان چوبهای يوغ و خيش گاوان آتشی درست كرد و گوشت گاوها را پخت و به كسانی كه همراهش بودند داد و آنها خوردند. سپس اليشع همراه ايليا رفت و به خدمت او مشغول شد.
