1After a long time, in the third year, the word of the Lord came to Elijah: ‘Go and present yourself to Ahab, and I will send rain on the land.’2So Elijah went to present himself to Ahab. Now the famine was severe in Samaria,3and Ahab had summoned Obadiah, his palace administrator. (Obadiah was a devout believer in the Lord.4While Jezebel was killing off the Lord’s prophets, Obadiah had taken a hundred prophets and hidden them in two caves, fifty in each, and had supplied them with food and water.)5Ahab had said to Obadiah, ‘Go through the land to all the springs and valleys. Maybe we can find some grass to keep the horses and mules alive so we will not have to kill any of our animals.’6So they divided the land they were to cover, Ahab going in one direction and Obadiah in another.7As Obadiah was walking along, Elijah met him. Obadiah recognised him, bowed down to the ground, and said, ‘Is it really you, my lord Elijah?’8‘Yes,’ he replied. ‘Go tell your master, “Elijah is here.” ’9‘What have I done wrong,’ asked Obadiah, ‘that you are handing your servant over to Ahab to be put to death?10As surely as the Lord your God lives, there is not a nation or kingdom where my master has not sent someone to look for you. And whenever a nation or kingdom claimed you were not there, he made them swear they could not find you.11But now you tell me to go to my master and say, “Elijah is here.”12I don’t know where the Spirit of the Lord may carry you when I leave you. If I go and tell Ahab and he doesn’t find you, he will kill me. Yet I your servant have worshipped the Lord since my youth.13Haven’t you heard, my lord, what I did while Jezebel was killing the prophets of the Lord? I hid a hundred of the Lord’s prophets in two caves, fifty in each, and supplied them with food and water.14And now you tell me to go to my master and say, “Elijah is here.” He will kill me!’15Elijah said, ‘As the Lord Almighty lives, whom I serve, I will surely present myself to Ahab today.’
Elijah on Mount Carmel
16So Obadiah went to meet Ahab and told him, and Ahab went to meet Elijah.17When he saw Elijah, he said to him, ‘Is that you, you troubler of Israel?’18‘I have not made trouble for Israel,’ Elijah replied. ‘But you and your father’s family have. You have abandoned the Lord’s commands and have followed the Baals.19Now summon the people from all over Israel to meet me on Mount Carmel. And bring the four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal and the four hundred prophets of Asherah, who eat at Jezebel’s table.’20So Ahab sent word throughout all Israel and assembled the prophets on Mount Carmel.21Elijah went before the people and said, ‘How long will you waver between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow him; but if Baal is God, follow him.’ But the people said nothing.22Then Elijah said to them, ‘I am the only one of the Lord’s prophets left, but Baal has four hundred and fifty prophets.23Get two bulls for us. Let Baal’s prophets choose one for themselves, and let them cut it into pieces and put it on the wood but not set fire to it. I will prepare the other bull and put it on the wood but not set fire to it.24Then you call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the Lord. The god who answers by fire – he is God.’ Then all the people said, ‘What you say is good.’25Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, ‘Choose one of the bulls and prepare it first, since there are so many of you. Call on the name of your god, but do not light the fire.’26So they took the bull that was given to them and prepared it. Then they called on the name of Baal from morning till noon. ‘Baal, answer us!’ they shouted. But there was no response; no-one answered. And they danced around the altar they had made.27At noon Elijah began to taunt them. ‘Shout louder!’ he said. ‘Surely he is a god! Perhaps he is deep in thought, or busy, or travelling. Maybe he is sleeping and must be awakened.’28So they shouted louder and slashed themselves with swords and spears, as was their custom, until their blood flowed.29Midday passed, and they continued their frantic prophesying until the time for the evening sacrifice. But there was no response, no-one answered, no-one paid attention.30Then Elijah said to all the people, ‘Come here to me.’ They came to him, and he repaired the altar of the Lord, which had been torn down.31Elijah took twelve stones, one for each of the tribes descended from Jacob, to whom the word of the Lord had come, saying, ‘Your name shall be Israel.’32With the stones he built an altar in the name of the Lord, and he dug a trench round it large enough to hold two seahs[1] of seed.33He arranged the wood, cut the bull into pieces and laid it on the wood. Then he said to them, ‘Fill four large jars with water and pour it on the offering and on the wood.’34‘Do it again,’ he said, and they did it again. ‘Do it a third time,’ he ordered, and they did it the third time.35The water ran down around the altar and even filled the trench.36At the time of sacrifice, the prophet Elijah stepped forward and prayed: ‘Lord, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, let it be known today that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant and have done all these things at your command.37Answer me, Lord, answer me, so these people will know that you, Lord, are God, and that you are turning their hearts back again.’38Then the fire of the Lord fell and burned up the sacrifice, the wood, the stones and the soil, and also licked up the water in the trench.39When all the people saw this, they fell prostrate and cried, ‘The Lord – he is God! The Lord – he is God!’40Then Elijah commanded them, ‘Seize the prophets of Baal. Don’t let anyone get away!’ They seized them, and Elijah had them brought down to the Kishon Valley and slaughtered there.41And Elijah said to Ahab, ‘Go, eat and drink, for there is the sound of a heavy rain.’42So Ahab went off to eat and drink, but Elijah climbed to the top of Carmel, bent down to the ground and put his face between his knees.43‘Go and look towards the sea,’ he told his servant. And he went up and looked. ‘There is nothing there,’ he said. Seven times Elijah said, ‘Go back.’44The seventh time the servant reported, ‘A cloud as small as a man’s hand is rising from the sea.’ So Elijah said, ‘Go and tell Ahab, “Hitch up your chariot and go down before the rain stops you.” ’45Meanwhile, the sky grew black with clouds, the wind rose, a heavy rainstorm came on and Ahab rode off to Jezreel.46The power of the Lord came on Elijah and, tucking his cloak into his belt, he ran ahead of Ahab all the way to Jezreel.

1در سومين سال خشكسالی، يک روز خداوند به ايليا فرمود: «نزد اخاب پادشاه برو و به او بگو كه من بزودی باران میفرستم!»2پس ايليا روانه شد. در اين وقت، در شهر سامره شدت قحطی به اوج رسيده بود.3-4سرپرست امور دربار اخاب، شخصی بود به نام عوبديا. (عوبديا مردی خداترس بود. يكبار وقتی ملكه ايزابل میخواست تمام انبيای خداوند را قتل عام كند، عوبديا صد نفر از آنها را پنجاه پنجاه درون دو غار پنهان كرد و به ايشان نان و آب میداد.)5اخاب پادشاه به عوبديا گفت: «ما بايد تمام كنارههای چشمهها و نهرها را بگرديم تا شايد كمی علف پيدا كنيم و بتوانيم اقلاً بعضی از اسبها و قاطرهايمان را زنده نگه داريم.»6پس آنها نواحی مورد نظر را بين خود تقسيم كردند و هر كدام از يک راه رفتند.7وقتی عوبديا در راه بود ناگهان ايليا به او برخورد! عوبديا ايليا را فوراً شناخت و پيش پای او به خاک افتاد و گفت: «ای سرور من ايليا، آيا واقعاً اين خود تو هستی؟»8ايليا جواب داد: «بلی. برو به اخاب بگو كه من اينجا هستم.»9عوبديا گفت: «ای سرورم، مگر من چه گناهی كردهام كه میخواهی مرا به دست اخاب به كشتن بدهی؟10به خداوند، خدای زندهات قسم، اخاب پادشاه برای جستجوی تو مأموران خود را به تمام ممالک جهان فرستاده است. در هر مملكتی كه به او گفته میشد ايليا در آنجا نيست، او از پادشاه آن مملكت میخواست قسم بخورد كه حقيقت را میگويد.11حال تو میگويی پيش اخاب بروم و به او بگويم كه ايليا در اينجاست!12میترسم به محض اينكه از پيش تو بروم، روح خداوند تو را از اينجا بردارد و به جای ديگری ببرد. آنگاه وقتی اخاب پادشاه به جستجوی تو به اينجا بيايد و تو را پيدا نكند، مرا خواهد كشت. تو میدانی كه من در تمام عمرم خدمتگزار وفاداری برای خداوند بودهام.13آيا اين را هيچكس به سرورم نگفته كه وقتی ملكه ايزابل میخواست همهٔ انبيای خداوند را بكشد، من چگونه صد نفر از آنها را در دو دستهٔ پنجاه نفری در دو غار پنهان كردم و به ايشان نان و آب دادم؟14حال تو میگويی كه بروم و به پادشاه بگويم كه ايليا اينجاست؟ با اين كار خود را به كشتن خواهم داد.»15ايليا گفت: «به خداوند زنده، خدای قادر متعال كه خدمتش میكنم، قسم كه امروز خود را به اخاب نشان خواهم داد.»16پس عوبديا برگشت و به اخاب خبر داد كه ايليا پيدا شده است. اخاب با شنيدن اين خبر به ملاقات ايليا رفت.17وقتی او ايليا را ديد گفت: «پس تو هستی كه اين بلا را بر سر اسرائيل آوردهای!»18ايليا جواب داد: «من اين بلا را بر سر اسرائيل نياوردهام، بلكه تو و خاندانت با سرپيچی از دستورات خداوند و پرستش بت بعل باعث شدهايد اين بلا بر سر اسرائيل بيايد.19حال برو و تمام قوم اسرائيل را روی كوه كرمل جمع كن. همچنين چهارصد و پنجاه نبی بت بعل و چهارصد نبی بت اشيره را كه ايزابل معاش آنها را تأمين میكند به كوه كرمل احضار كن.»20پس اخاب تمام بنیاسرائيل را با انبيای بعل به كوه كرمل احضار كرد.21وقتی همه جمع شدند، ايليا خطاب به ايشان گفت: «تا كی میخواهيد هم خدا را بپرستيد و هم بتها را؟ اگر خداوند خداست، او را اطاعت نماييد و اگر بعل خداست، او را پيروی كنيد.» اما قوم هيچ جوابی ندادند.22ايليا در ادامهٔ سخنان خود گفت: «از انبيای خداوند تنها من باقی ماندهام، اما انبيای بعل چهارصد و پنجاه نفرند.23حال دو گاو اينجا بياوريد. انبيای بعل از آن دو گاو يكی را انتخاب كنند و آن را تكهتكه نموده بر هيزم قربانگاه بعل بگذارند، ولی هيزم را آتش نزنند. من هم گاو ديگر را به همان ترتيب روی هيزم قربانگاه خداوند میگذارم، ولی هيزم را آتش نمیزنم.24آنگاه انبيای بعل نزد خدای خود دعا كنند و من نيز نزد خداوند دعا میكنم. آن خدايی كه هيزم قربانگاه خود را شعلهور سازد، او خدای حقيقی است!» تمام قوم اسرائيل اين پيشنهاد را پذيرفتند.25بعد ايليا به انبيای بعل گفت: «شما اول شروع كنيد، چون تعدادتان بيشتر است. يكی از گاوها را آماده كنيد و روی قربانگاه بگذاريد ولی هيزم را آتش نزنيد. فقط نزد خدای خود دعا كنيد.»26پس آنها يكی از گاوها را گرفتند و آماده كردند و آن را روی قربانگاه بعل گذاشتند و از صبح تا ظهر نزد بعل فرياد میزدند: «ای بعل، دعای ما را اجابت كن!» و دور قربانگاه میرقصيدند. اما هيچ صدا و جوابی نيامد.27نزديک ظهر ايليا آنها را به باد مسخره گرفت و گفت: «بلندتر فرياد بزنيد تا خدايتان بشنود! شايد او به فكر فرو رفته و يا شايد مشغول است! شايد اصلاً اينجا نيست و در سفر است! شايد هم خوابيده و بايد بيدارش كنيد!»28پس بلندتر فرياد زدند. آنها چنانكه عادتشان بود با شمشير و نيزه خود را مجروح میكردند، به طوری كه خون از بدنهايشان جاری میشد.29به اين ترتيب، از صبح تا عصر آنها ورد خواندند ولی نه صدايی از بعل برآمد و نه جوابی.30آنگاه ايليا تمام قوم را جمع كرد و قربانگاه خداوند را كه ويران شده بود، دوباره بر پا نمود.31سپس او دوازده سنگ برداشت. اين سنگها به نشانهٔ دوازده قبيلهٔ اسرائيل بود كه به نام پسران يعقوب خوانده میشدند. (يعقوب همان است كه خداوند اسمش را اسرائيل گذاشت.)32ايليا با آن سنگها قربانگاه خداوند را از نو ساخت. بعد زمين دور قربانگاه را به عمق يک متر كند33و هيزمها را روی قربانگاه گذاشت، گاو را تكهتكه كرد و آن را روی هيزمها نهاد و گفت: «چهار سطل آب بياوريد و روی تكههای گاو و هيزم بريزيد.» آنها چنين كردند.34ايليا گفت: «باز هم آب بريزيد.» آنها باز هم آب ريختند. ايليا بازگفت: «يكبار ديگر هم بريزيد.» آنها برای بار سوم آب ريختند35به طوری که آب، قربانگاه را پر ساخته، از آن سرازير شد و گودال اطراف را نيز تمام پر كرد.36هنگام عصر كه وقت قربانی كردن بود، ايليا كنار قربانگاه ايستاد و اينطور دعا كرد: «ای خداوند، خدای ابراهيم و اسحاق و يعقوب، امروز آشكار كن كه تو خدای اسرائيل هستی و من خدمتگزار تو میباشم. ثابت كن كه همهٔ اين كارها را من به فرمان تو انجام دادهام.37ای خداوند، جواب بده. دعای مرا اجابت فرما تا اين قوم بدانند كه تو خدا هستی و ايشان را به سوی خود باز میگردانی.»38آنگاه خداوند آتشی از آسمان فرستاد و قربانی و هيزم و حتی خاک و سنگ قربانگاه را سوزانيد و آب گودال را نيز خشک كرد.39وقتی بنیاسرائيل اين را ديدند، همگی روی خاک افتادند و فرياد زدند: «خداوند، خداست! خداوند، خداست!»40آنگاه ايليای نبی به آنها گفت: «اين انبيای بعل را بگيريد و نگذاريد يكی از ايشان نيز فرار كند.» پس همهٔ آنها را گرفتند و ايليا آنها را به كنار رود قيشون برد و آنها را در آنجا كشت.
خشكسالی تمام میشود
41سپس ايليا به اخاب پادشاه گفت: «حال برو بخور و بياشام! بزودی باران شروع میشود زيرا صدای رعد به گوشم میرسد.»42پس اخاب رفت كه عيش و نوش كند ولی ايليا به قلهٔ كوه كرمل برآمد و در آنجا رو به زمين خم شد و سرش را ميان زانوانش گرفت.43سپس به خدمتكار خود گفت: «به طرف دريا برو و نگاه كن؛ ببين ابری میبينی!» او رفت و برگشت و گفت: «چيزی نمیبينم.» ايليا گفت: «باز هم برو.» و به اين ترتيب هفت بار او را فرستاد.44سرانجام بار هفتم خدمتكار به او گفت: «يک تكه ابر كوچک به اندازهٔ كف دست از طرف دريا بالا میآيد.» ايليا به او گفت: «نزد اخاب برو و بگو هر چه زودتر سوار عرابهاش شود و از كوه پايين برود و گرنه باران مانع رفتنش خواهد شد.»45طولی نكشيد كه ابرهای غليظ به هم آمدند، هوا تاريک گرديد، باد تندی وزيد و باران شروع شد. اخاب با شتاب سوار عرابه شد و به سوی يزرعيل روانه گشت.46اما خداوند نيروی مخصوصی به ايليا بخشيد و او برخاست لباسش را به كمر بست و آنچنان تند دويد كه جلوتر از عرابهٔ اخاب به يزرعيل رسيد.
