Musa, ‹‹Niçin bana çıkışıyorsunuz?›› dedi, ‹‹Neden RAB'bi deniyorsunuz?››3Ama halk susamıştı. ‹‹Niçin bizi Mısır'dan çıkardın?›› diye Musa'ya söylendiler, ‹‹Bizi, çocuklarımızı, hayvanlarımızı susuzluktan öldürmek için mi?››4Musa, ‹‹Bu halka ne yapayım?›› diye RAB'be feryat etti, ‹‹Neredeyse beni taşlayacaklar.››5RAB Musa'ya, ‹‹Halkın önüne geç›› dedi, ‹‹Birkaç İsrail ileri gelenini ve Nil'e vurduğun değneği de yanına alıp yürü.6Ben Horev Dağı'nda bir kayanın üzerinde, senin önünde duracağım. Kayaya vuracaksın, halk içsin diye su fışkıracak.›› Musa İsrail ileri gelenlerinin önünde denileni yaptı.7Oraya Massa[1] ve Meriva[2] adı verildi. Çünkü İsrailliler orada Musa'ya çıkışmış ve, ‹‹Acaba RAB aramızda mı, değil mi?›› diye RAB'bi denemişlerdi.
Amalekliler Bozguna Uğruyor
8Amalekliler gelip Refidim'de İsrailliler'e savaş açtılar.9Musa Yeşu'ya, ‹‹Adam seç, git Amalekliler'le savaş›› dedi, ‹‹Yarın ben elimde Tanrı'nın değneğiyle tepenin üzerinde duracağım.››10Yeşu Musa'nın buyurduğu gibi Amalekliler'le savaştı. Bu arada Musa, Harun ve Hur tepenin üzerine çıktılar.11Musa elini kaldırdıkça İsrailliler, indirdikçe Amalekliler kazanıyordu.12Ne var ki, Musa'nın elleri yoruldu. Bir taş getirip altına koydular. Musa üzerine oturdu. Bir yanda Harun, öbür yanda Hur Musa'nın ellerini yukarıda tuttular. Güneş batıncaya dek Musa'nın elleri yukarıda kaldı.13Böylece Yeşu Amalek ordusunu yenip kılıçtan geçirdi.14RAB Musa'ya, ‹‹Bunu anı olarak kayda geç›› dedi, ‹‹Yeşu'ya da söyle, Amalekliler'in adını yeryüzünden büsbütün sileceğim.››15Musa bir sunak yaptı, adını ‹‹Yahve nissi[3]›› koydu.16‹‹Eller Rab'bin tahtına doğru kaldırıldı›› dedi, ‹‹RAB kuşaklar boyunca Amalekliler'e karşı savaşacak!››

Water from the rock
1The whole Israelite community set out from the Desert of Sin, travelling from place to place as the Lord commanded. They camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink.2So they quarrelled with Moses and said, ‘Give us water to drink.’ Moses replied, ‘Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you put the Lord to the test?’3But the people were thirsty for water there, and they grumbled against Moses. They said, ‘Why did you bring us up out of Egypt to make us and our children and livestock die of thirst?’4Then Moses cried out to the Lord, ‘What am I to do with these people? They are almost ready to stone me.’5The Lord answered Moses, ‘Go out in front of the people. Take with you some of the elders of Israel and take in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go.6I will stand there before you by the rock at Horeb. Strike the rock, and water will come out of it for the people to drink.’ So Moses did this in the sight of the elders of Israel.7And he called the place Massah[1] and Meribah[2] because the Israelites quarrelled and because they tested the Lord saying, ‘Is the Lord among us or not?’
The Amalekites defeated
8The Amalekites came and attacked the Israelites at Rephidim.9Moses said to Joshua, ‘Choose some of our men and go out to fight the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on top of the hill with the staff of God in my hands.’10So Joshua fought the Amalekites as Moses had ordered, and Moses, Aaron and Hur went to the top of the hill.11As long as Moses held up his hands, the Israelites were winning, but whenever he lowered his hands, the Amalekites were winning.12When Moses’ hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up – one on one side, one on the other – so that his hands remained steady till sunset.13So Joshua overcame the Amalekite army with the sword.14Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘Write this on a scroll as something to be remembered and make sure that Joshua hears it, because I will completely blot out the name of Amalek from under heaven.’15Moses built an altar and called it The Lord is my Banner.16He said, ‘Because hands were lifted up against[3] the throne of the Lord,[4] the Lord will be at war against the Amalekites from generation to generation.’
