1 Tanrı Yakup'a, ‹‹Git, Beytel'e yerleş›› dedi, ‹‹Ağabeyin Esav'dan kaçarken sana görünen Tanrı'ya orada bir sunak yap.›› 2 Yakup ailesine ve yanındakilere, ‹‹Yabancı ilahlarınızı atın›› dedi, ‹‹Kendinizi arındırıp giysilerinizi değiştirin. 3 Beytel'e gidelim. Sıkıntı çektiğim günlerde yakarışımı duyan, gittiğim her yerde benimle birlikte olan Tanrı'ya orada bir sunak yapacağım.›› 4 Böylece herkes yabancı ilahlarını, kulaklarındaki küpeleri Yakup'a verdi. Yakup bunları Şekem yakınlarında bir yabanıl fıstık ağacının altına gömdü. 5 Sonra göçtüler. Çevre kentlerde yaşayan halk peşlerine düşmedi, çünkü hepsini Tanrı korkusu sarmıştı. 6 Yakup adamlarıyla birlikte Kenan ülkesindeki Luz -Beytel- Kenti'ne geldi. 7 Bir sunak yaparak oraya El-Beytel[1] adını verdi. Çünkü ağabeyinden kaçarken Tanrı orada kendisine görünmüştü. 8 Rebeka'nın dadısı Debora ölünce Beytel'in güneyindeki meşe ağacının altına gömüldü. Bu yüzden ağaca Allon-Bakut[2] adı verildi. 9 Yakup Paddan-Aram'dan dönünce, Tanrı ona yine görünerek onu kutsadı. 10 ‹‹Sana Yakup diyorlar, ama bundan böyle adın Yakup değil, İsrail olacak›› diyerek onun adını İsrail[3] koydu. 11 ‹‹Ben Her Şeye Gücü Yeten Tanrı'yım›› dedi, ‹‹Verimli ol, çoğal. Senden bir ulus ve uluslar topluluğu doğacak. Kralların atası olacaksın. 12 İbrahim'e, İshak'a verdiğim toprakları sana verecek, senden sonra da soyuna bağışlayacağım.›› 13 Sonra Tanrı Yakup'tan ayrılarak onunla konuştuğu yerden yukarı çekildi. 14 Yakup Tanrı'nın kendisiyle konuştuğu yere taş bir anıt dikti. Üzerine dökmelik sunu ve zeytinyağı döktü. 15 Oraya, Tanrı'nın kendisiyle konuştuğu yere Beytel[4] adını verdi. 



16 Sonra Beytel'den göçtüler. Efrat'a varmadan Rahel doğum yaptı. Doğum yaparken çok sancı çekti. 17 O sancı çekerken, ebesi, ‹‹Korkma!›› dedi, ‹‹Bir oğlun daha oluyor.›› 18 Ama Rahel ölmek üzereydi. Can verirken oğlunun adını Ben-Oni[5] koydu. Babası ise çocuğa Benyamin[6] adını verdi. 19 Rahel öldü ve Efrat -Beytlehem- yolunda gömüldü. 20 Yakup Rahel'in mezarına bir taş dikti. Bu mezar taşı bugüne kadar kaldı. 21 İsrail yine göçtü ve Eder Kulesi'nin ötesinde konakladı. 22 İsrail o bölgede yaşarken Ruben babasının cariyesi Bilha'yla yattı. İsrail bunu duyunca çok kızdı[7]. 23 Yakup'un on iki oğlu vardı. Lea'nın oğulları: Ruben -Yakup'un ilk oğlu- Şimon, Levi, Yahuda, İssakar, Zevulun. 24 Rahel'in oğulları: Yusuf, Benyamin. 25 Rahel'in cariyesi Bilha'nın oğulları: Dan, Naftali. 26 Lea'nın cariyesi Zilpa'nın oğulları: Gad, Aşer. Yakup'un Paddan-Aram'da doğan oğulları bunlardır. 27 Yakup, İshak'la İbrahim'in de yabancı olarak kalmış olduğu, bugün Hevron denen Kiryat-Arba yakınlarındaki Mamre'ye, babası İshak'ın yanına gitti. 28 İshak yüz seksen yıl yaşadı. 29 Kocamış, yaşama doymuş olarak son soluğunu verdi. Ölüp halkına kavuştu. Oğulları Esav'la Yakup onu gömdüler.

1 God said to Jacob, “Arise, go up to Bethel and dwell there. Make an altar there to the God who appeared to you when you fled from your brother Esau.” (Yar 27:43; Yar 28:19) 2 So Jacob said to his household and to all who were with him, “Put away the foreign gods that are among you and purify yourselves and change your garments. (Yar 18:19; Yar 31:19; Çık 19:10; Yşu 24:15; Yşu 24:23; 1 Sa 7:3) 3 Then let us arise and go up to Bethel, so that I may make there an altar to the God who answers me in the day of my distress and has been with me wherever I have gone.” (Yar 28:20; Yar 31:3; Yar 32:7; Yar 32:24) 4 So they gave to Jacob all the foreign gods that they had, and the rings that were in their ears. Jacob hid them under the terebinth tree that was near Shechem. (Yşu 24:26; Hak 9:6) 5 And as they journeyed, a terror from God fell upon the cities that were around them, so that they did not pursue the sons of Jacob. 6 And Jacob came to Luz (that is, Bethel), which is in the land of Canaan, he and all the people who were with him, (Yar 28:19) 7 and there he built an altar and called the place El-bethel,[1] because there God had revealed himself to him when he fled from his brother. (Yar 35:1) 8 And Deborah, Rebekah’s nurse, died, and she was buried under an oak below Bethel. So he called its name Allon-bacuth.[2] (Yar 24:59) 9 God appeared[3] to Jacob again, when he came from Paddan-aram, and blessed him. 10 And God said to him, “Your name is Jacob; no longer shall your name be called Jacob, but Israel shall be your name.” So he called his name Israel. (Yar 17:5; Yar 17:15; Yar 32:28) 11 And God said to him, “I am God Almighty:[4] be fruitful and multiply. A nation and a company of nations shall come from you, and kings shall come from your own body.[5] (Yar 17:1; Yar 17:5; Yar 17:16; Yar 26:4; Yar 28:3; Yar 48:4) 12 The land that I gave to Abraham and Isaac I will give to you, and I will give the land to your offspring after you.” (Yar 12:7; Yar 13:15; Yar 17:8; Yar 26:3; Yar 28:13) 13 Then God went up from him in the place where he had spoken with him. (Yar 17:22) 14 And Jacob set up a pillar in the place where he had spoken with him, a pillar of stone. He poured out a drink offering on it and poured oil on it. (Yar 28:18; Yar 31:45) 15 So Jacob called the name of the place where God had spoken with him Bethel. (Yar 28:19) 



16 Then they journeyed from Bethel. When they were still some distance[6] from Ephrath, Rachel went into labor, and she had hard labor. 17 And when her labor was at its hardest, the midwife said to her, “Do not fear, for you have another son.” (Yar 30:24) 18 And as her soul was departing (for she was dying), she called his name Ben-oni;[7] but his father called him Benjamin.[8] (Luk 1:59) 19 So Rachel died, and she was buried on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem), (Yar 48:7; Rut 1:2; Rut 4:11; Mik 5:2; Mat 2:6; Mat 2:16) 20 and Jacob set up a pillar over her tomb. It is the pillar of Rachel’s tomb, which is there to this day. (1 Sa 10:2; 2 Sa 18:18) 21 Israel journeyed on and pitched his tent beyond the tower of Eder. 22 While Israel lived in that land, Reuben went and lay with Bilhah his father’s concubine. And Israel heard of it. Now the sons of Jacob were twelve. (Yar 49:4; 2 Sa 16:22; 2 Sa 20:3; 1 Ta 5:1; 1 Ko 5:1) 23 The sons of Leah: Reuben (Jacob’s firstborn), Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun. (Yar 46:8; Çık 1:2) 24 The sons of Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin. 25 The sons of Bilhah, Rachel’s servant: Dan and Naphtali. 26 The sons of Zilpah, Leah’s servant: Gad and Asher. These were the sons of Jacob who were born to him in Paddan-aram. 27 And Jacob came to his father Isaac at Mamre, or Kiriath-arba (that is, Hebron), where Abraham and Isaac had sojourned. (Yar 13:18; Yar 23:2; Yar 23:19; Yşu 14:15; Yşu 15:13) 28 Now the days of Isaac were 180 years. 29 And Isaac breathed his last, and he died and was gathered to his people, old and full of days. And his sons Esau and Jacob buried him. (Yar 15:15; Yar 25:8; Yar 25:9; Yar 49:31)
