1 Avimelek'in ölümünden sonra İsrail'i kurtarmak için İssakar oymağından Dodo oğlu Pua oğlu Tola adında bir adam ortaya çıktı. Tola Efrayim'in dağlık bölgesindeki Şamir'de yaşardı. 2 İsrail'i yirmi üç yıl yönettikten sonra öldü, Şamir'de gömüldü. 



3 Ondan sonra Gilatlı Yair başa geçti. Yair İsrail'i yirmi iki yıl yönetti. 4 Otuz oğlu vardı. Bunlar otuz eşeğe biner, otuz kenti yönetirlerdi. Gilat yöresindeki bu kentler bugün de Havvot-Yair[1] diye anılıyor. 5 Yair ölünce Kamon'da gömüldü. 



6 İsrailliler yine RAB'bin gözünde kötü olanı yaptılar; Baallar'a, Aştoretler'e, Aram, Sayda, Moav, Ammon ve Filist ilahlarına kulluk ettiler. RAB'bi terk ettiler, O'na kulluk etmediler. 7 Bu yüzden İsrailliler'e öfkelenen RAB, onları Filistliler'e ve Ammonlular'a tutsak etti. 8 Bunlar o yıldan başlayarak İsrailliler'i baskı altında ezdiler; Şeria Irmağı'nın ötesinde, Gilat'taki Amorlular ülkesinde yaşayan bütün İsrailliler'i on sekiz yıl baskı altında tuttular. 9 Ammonlular Yahuda, Benyamin ve Efrayim oymaklarıyla savaşmak için Şeria Irmağı'nın ötesine geçtiler. İsrail büyük sıkıntı içindeydi. 10 İsrailliler RAB'be, ‹‹Sana karşı günah işledik›› diye seslendiler, ‹‹Seni, Tanrımız'ı terk edip Baallar'a kulluk ettik.›› 11 RAB, ‹‹Sizi Mısırlılar'dan, Amorlular'dan, Ammonlular'dan, Filistliler'den kurtaran ben değil miyim?›› diye karşılık verdi, 12 ‹‹Saydalılar, Amalekliler, Maonlular size baskı yaptıklarında bana yakardınız, ben de sizi onların elinden kurtardım. 13 Sizse beni terk ettiniz, başka ilahlara kulluk ettiniz. Bu yüzden sizi bir daha kurtarmayacağım. 14 Gidin, seçtiğiniz ilahlara yakarın; sıkıntıya düştüğünüzde sizi onlar kurtarsın.›› 15 İsrailliler, ‹‹Günah işledik›› dediler, ‹‹Bize ne istersen yap. Yalnız bugün bizi kurtar.›› 16 Sonra aralarındaki yabancı putları atıp RAB'be tapındılar. RAB de onların daha fazla acı çekmesine dayanamadı. 17 Ammonlular toplanıp Gilat'ta ordugah kurunca İsrailliler de toplanarak Mispa'da ordugah kurdular. 18 Gilat halkının önderleri birbirlerine, ‹‹Ammonlular'a karşı ilk saldırıyı başlatan kişi, bütün Gilat halkının önderi olacak›› dediler.

1 After Abimelech there arose to save Israel Tola the son of Puah, son of Dodo, a man of Issachar, and he lived at Shamir in the hill country of Ephraim. (Yşu 24:33; Hak 2:16; Hak 10:12) 2 And he judged Israel twenty-three years. Then he died and was buried at Shamir. 3 After him arose Jair the Gileadite, who judged Israel twenty-two years. 4 And he had thirty sons who rode on thirty donkeys, and they had thirty cities, called Havvoth-jair to this day, which are in the land of Gilead. (Yas 3:14; Hak 5:10; Hak 12:14) 5 And Jair died and was buried in Kamon. 



6 The people of Israel again did what was evil in the sight of the Lord and served the Baals and the Ashtaroth, the gods of Syria, the gods of Sidon, the gods of Moab, the gods of the Ammonites, and the gods of the Philistines. And they forsook the Lord and did not serve him. (Yas 31:16; Hak 2:11; Hak 2:13; Hak 10:10; Hak 10:13; 1 Kr 11:5; 1 Kr 11:7; 1 Kr 11:33; 2 Kr 23:13) 7 So the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of the Philistines and into the hand of the Ammonites, (Hak 2:14) 8 and they crushed and oppressed the people of Israel that year. For eighteen years they oppressed all the people of Israel who were beyond the Jordan in the land of the Amorites, which is in Gilead. 9 And the Ammonites crossed the Jordan to fight also against Judah and against Benjamin and against the house of Ephraim, so that Israel was severely distressed. 10 And the people of Israel cried out to the Lord, saying, “We have sinned against you, because we have forsaken our God and have served the Baals.” (Hak 3:9; Hak 10:6; Hak 10:13) 11 And the Lord said to the people of Israel, “Did I not save you from the Egyptians and from the Amorites, from the Ammonites and from the Philistines? (Çık 14:30; Say 21:21; Hak 3:13; Hak 3:31) 12 The Sidonians also, and the Amalekites and the Maonites oppressed you, and you cried out to me, and I saved you out of their hand. (Hak 2:16; Hak 3:13; Hak 6:3) 13 Yet you have forsaken me and served other gods; therefore I will save you no more. (Yas 32:15; Hak 10:6; Hak 10:10; Yer 2:13) 14 Go and cry out to the gods whom you have chosen; let them save you in the time of your distress.” (Yas 32:37) 15 And the people of Israel said to the Lord, “We have sinned; do to us whatever seems good to you. Only please deliver us this day.” 16 So they put away the foreign gods from among them and served the Lord, and he became impatient over the misery of Israel. (Hak 2:18; Yşa 63:9) 17 Then the Ammonites were called to arms, and they encamped in Gilead. And the people of Israel came together, and they encamped at Mizpah. (Hak 11:11; Hak 11:29) 18 And the people, the leaders of Gilead, said one to another, “Who is the man who will begin to fight against the Ammonites? He shall be head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.” (Hak 11:5; Hak 11:8; Hak 11:11)
