1 Danach fuhr Jesus über den See von Galiläa bei Tiberias. (Joh 6,23; Joh 21,1) 2 Und es folgte ihm eine große Volksmenge nach, weil sie seine Zeichen sahen, die er an den Kranken tat. (Joh 2,23) 3 Jesus aber ging auf den Berg und saß dort mit seinen Jüngern beisammen. (Joh 6,15) 4 Es war aber das Passah nahe, das Fest der Juden. (Joh 2,13) 5 Da nun Jesus die Augen erhob und sah, dass eine große Volksmenge zu ihm kam, sprach er zu Philippus: Wo kaufen wir Brot, damit diese essen können? (Joh 1,44) 6 (Das sagte er aber, um ihn auf die Probe zu stellen, denn er selbst wusste wohl, was er tun wollte.) (1Mo 22,1; 5Mo 8,2; 5Mo 8,16) 7 Philippus antwortete ihm: Für 200 Denare Brot reicht nicht aus für sie, dass jeder von ihnen auch nur ein wenig bekommt! (4Mo 11,21; 2Chr 25,9) 8 Da sprach einer von seinen Jüngern, Andreas, der Bruder des Simon Petrus, zu ihm: (Joh 1,40) 9 Es ist ein Knabe hier, der hat fünf Gerstenbrote und zwei Fische; doch was ist das für so viele? (2Kön 4,43) 10 Jesus aber sprach: Lasst die Leute sich setzen! Es war nämlich viel Gras an dem Ort. Da setzten sich die Männer; es waren etwa 5 000. (2Kor 9,8; Phil 4,19) 11 Und Jesus nahm die Brote, sagte Dank und teilte sie den Jüngern aus, die Jünger aber denen, die sich gesetzt hatten; ebenso auch von den Fischen, so viel sie wollten. (Lk 22,19; Lk 24,30; Joh 6,23) 12 Und als sie gesättigt waren, sprach er zu seinen Jüngern: Sammelt die übrig gebliebenen Brocken, damit nichts verdirbt! (Ps 103,1; Mt 15,27) 13 Da sammelten sie und füllten zwölf Körbe mit Brocken von den fünf Gerstenbroten, die denen übrig geblieben waren, welche gegessen hatten. (Spr 11,24) 14 Als nun die Leute das Zeichen sahen, das Jesus getan hatte, sprachen sie: Das ist wahrhaftig der Prophet, der in die Welt kommen soll! (5Mo 18,15; Joh 7,40) 15 Da nun Jesus erkannte, dass sie kommen würden, um ihn mit Gewalt zum König zu machen, zog er sich wiederum auf den Berg zurück, er allein. (Mt 14,23) 



16 Als es aber Abend geworden war, gingen seine Jünger hinab an den See, 17 und sie stiegen in das Schiff und fuhren über den See nach Kapernaum. Und es war schon finster geworden, und Jesus war nicht zu ihnen gekommen. (Mk 6,45; Joh 2,12; Joh 4,46) 18 Und der See ging hoch, da ein starker Wind wehte. (Ps 107,25; Ps 135,7) 19 Als sie nun ungefähr 25 oder 30 Stadien gerudert hatten, sahen sie Jesus auf dem See gehen und sich dem Schiff nähern; und sie fürchteten sich. (Mt 14,20) 20 Er aber sprach zu ihnen: Ich bin’s, fürchtet euch nicht! (Ps 35,3; Jes 43,1; Offb 1,17) 21 Da wollten sie ihn in das Schiff nehmen, und sogleich war das Schiff am Land, wohin sie fahren wollten. 



22 Am folgenden Tag, als die Volksmenge, die am jenseitigen Ufer des Sees stand, gesehen hatte, dass kein anderes Schiff dort war, als nur das eine, in welches seine Jünger gestiegen waren, und dass Jesus nicht mit seinen Jüngern in das Schiff gestiegen war, sondern dass seine Jünger allein abgefahren waren, (Joh 6,2; Joh 6,26) 23 (es kamen aber andere Schiffe von Tiberias nahe an den Ort, wo sie das Brot gegessen hatten nach der Danksagung des Herrn) 24 — da also die Volksmenge sah, dass Jesus nicht dort war, auch nicht seine Jünger, stiegen auch sie in die Schiffe und kamen nach Kapernaum und suchten Jesus. (Mk 1,37; Joh 1,39; Joh 7,11; Joh 11,56; Joh 12,21) 25 Und als sie ihn am anderen Ufer des Sees fanden, sprachen sie zu ihm: Rabbi, wann bist du hierher gekommen? (Joh 1,38) 26 Jesus antwortete ihnen und sprach: Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch: Ihr sucht mich nicht deshalb, weil ihr Zeichen gesehen, sondern weil ihr von den Broten gegessen habt und satt geworden seid. 27 Wirkt nicht [für] die Speise, die vergänglich ist, sondern [für] die Speise, die bis ins ewige Leben bleibt, die der Sohn des Menschen euch geben wird; denn diesen hat Gott, der Vater, bestätigt! (Jes 42,1; Jes 55,2; Mt 6,33; Mt 16,26; Lk 10,42; Joh 1,33; Joh 4,13; Joh 5,36; Joh 6,51; Joh 6,58; Joh 14,9) 28 Da sprachen sie zu ihm: Was sollen wir tun, um die Werke Gottes zu wirken[1]? (Lk 10,25; Apg 2,37; Apg 16,30) 29 Jesus antwortete und sprach zu ihnen: Das ist das Werk Gottes, dass ihr an den glaubt, den er gesandt hat. (Apg 10,30; Apg 10,34; 1Joh 3,23) 30 Da sprachen sie zu ihm: Was tust du denn für ein Zeichen, damit wir sehen und dir glauben? Was wirkst du? (Joh 2,18; Joh 6,11; Joh 12,37; 1Kor 1,22) 31 Unsere Väter haben das Manna gegessen in der Wüste, wie geschrieben steht: »Brot aus dem Himmel gab er ihnen zu essen«.[2] (2Mo 16,14; Neh 9,15; Ps 78,24; 1Kor 10,3) 



32 Da sprach Jesus zu ihnen: Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch: Nicht Mose hat euch das Brot aus dem Himmel gegeben, sondern mein Vater gibt euch das wahre Brot aus dem Himmel. (2Mo 16,4; 2Mo 16,8) 33 Denn das Brot Gottes ist derjenige, der aus dem Himmel herabkommt und der Welt Leben gibt. (Joh 6,51; Joh 6,58; Phil 1,21) 34 Da sprachen sie zu ihm: Herr, gib uns allezeit dieses Brot! (Joh 4,15) 35 Jesus aber sprach zu ihnen: Ich bin das Brot des Lebens.[3] Wer zu mir kommt, den wird nicht hungern, und wer an mich glaubt, den wird niemals dürsten. (Jes 55,2; Joh 4,14; Joh 7,37; Joh 8,12; Joh 9,5; Joh 10,7; Joh 10,9; Joh 10,11; Joh 10,14; Joh 11,25; Joh 14,6; Joh 15,1; Joh 15,5; Offb 7,16) 36 Aber ich habe es euch gesagt, dass ihr mich gesehen habt und doch nicht glaubt. (Lk 16,31; Joh 5,39) 37 Alles, was mir der Vater gibt, wird zu mir kommen; und wer zu mir kommt, den werde ich nicht hinausstoßen. (Jes 55,7; Mt 11,28; Lk 23,43; Joh 17,2; Apg 13,48; 1Tim 1,15) 38 Denn ich bin aus dem Himmel herabgekommen, nicht damit ich meinen Willen tue, sondern den Willen dessen, der mich gesandt hat. (Joh 5,30; Phil 2,8) 39 Und das ist der Wille des Vaters, der mich gesandt hat, dass ich nichts verliere von allem, was er mir gegeben hat, sondern dass ich es auferwecke am letzten Tag. (Mt 18,14; Joh 10,28; Joh 17,12; Röm 8,11; 1Thess 4,14) 40 Das ist aber der Wille dessen, der mich gesandt hat, dass jeder, der den Sohn sieht und an ihn glaubt, ewiges Leben hat; und ich werde ihn auferwecken am letzten Tag. (Joh 6,47; Joh 6,54) 41 Da murrten die Juden über ihn, weil er gesagt hatte: Ich bin das Brot, das aus dem Himmel herabgekommen ist, (Lk 5,30; 1Kor 10,10) 42 und sie sprachen: Ist dieser nicht Jesus, der Sohn Josephs, dessen Vater und Mutter wir kennen? Wie kann dieser denn sagen: Ich bin aus dem Himmel herabgekommen? (Mk 6,3; Lk 4,22; Joh 1,45; Joh 7,27) 43 Da antwortete Jesus und sprach zu ihnen: Murrt nicht untereinander! 44 Niemand kann zu mir kommen, es sei denn, dass ihn der Vater zieht, der mich gesandt hat; und ich werde ihn auferwecken am letzten Tag. (Mt 16,17; Apg 13,48; Apg 16,14; Phil 2,13) 45 Es steht geschrieben in den Propheten: »Und sie werden alle von Gott gelehrt sein«.[4] Jeder nun, der vom Vater gehört und gelernt hat, kommt zu mir. (Hi 36,22; Jes 54,13; 1Kor 2,12) 46 Nicht, dass jemand den Vater gesehen hätte; nur der, welcher von Gott ist, der hat den Vater gesehen. (Lk 10,22; Joh 1,18) 47 Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch: Wer an mich glaubt, der hat ewiges Leben. (Joh 3,36; Joh 6,40; Apg 16,31) 48 Ich bin das Brot des Lebens. (Joh 6,33; Joh 6,35) 49 Eure Väter haben das Manna gegessen in der Wüste und sind gestorben; 50 dies ist das Brot, das aus dem Himmel herabkommt, damit, wer davon isst, nicht stirbt. (Joh 6,35; Joh 6,58) 51 Ich bin das lebendige Brot, das aus dem Himmel herabgekommen ist. Wenn jemand von diesem Brot isst, so wird er leben in Ewigkeit. Das Brot aber, das ich geben werde, ist mein Fleisch, das ich geben werde für das Leben der Welt. (Hebr 9,28; Hebr 10,5; 1Joh 2,2) 52 Da stritten die Juden untereinander und sprachen: Wie kann dieser uns [sein] Fleisch zu essen geben? (Joh 3,4; Joh 3,9) 53 Darum sprach Jesus zu ihnen: Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch: Wenn ihr nicht das Fleisch des Menschensohnes esst und sein Blut trinkt, so habt ihr kein Leben in euch. (1Kor 10,16; 1Kor 11,24) 54 Wer mein Fleisch isst und mein Blut trinkt, der hat ewiges Leben, und ich werde ihn auferwecken am letzten Tag. (3Mo 17,11; 1Joh 1,7) 55 Denn mein Fleisch ist wahrhaftig Speise, und mein Blut ist wahrhaftig Trank. (Mt 26,26; Lk 22,19; Joh 6,35) 56 Wer mein Fleisch isst und mein Blut trinkt, der bleibt in mir und ich in ihm. (Gal 2,20; Eph 3,17; 1Joh 4,15) 57 Wie mich der lebendige Vater gesandt hat und ich um des Vaters willen lebe, so wird auch der, welcher mich isst, um meinetwillen leben. (Joh 5,26; Phil 1,21; Kol 3,3) 58 Dies ist das Brot, das aus dem Himmel herabgekommen ist; es ist nicht wie das Manna, das eure Väter gegessen haben, und sind gestorben; wer dieses Brot isst, der wird leben in Ewigkeit! (Joh 6,48) 59 Dies sprach er, als er in der Synagoge von Kapernaum lehrte. (Joh 6,24) 



60 Viele nun von seinen Jüngern, die das hörten, sprachen: Das ist eine harte Rede! Wer kann sie hören? (Mt 19,22; 2Petr 3,16) 61 Da aber Jesus bei sich selbst erkannte, dass seine Jünger darüber murrten, sprach er zu ihnen: Ist euch das ein Ärgernis? 62 Wie nun, wenn ihr den Sohn des Menschen dorthin auffahren seht, wo er zuvor war? (Mk 16,19; Joh 3,13; Apg 1,9; Eph 4,8) 63 Der Geist ist es, der lebendig macht, das Fleisch nützt gar nichts. Die Worte, die ich zu euch rede, sind Geist und sind Leben. (Spr 13,14; Joh 6,68; Röm 8,5; 1Kor 2,14; 2Kor 3,6) 64 Aber es sind etliche unter euch, die nicht glauben. Denn Jesus wusste von Anfang an, wer die waren, die nicht glaubten, und wer ihn verraten würde. (Joh 2,25; Joh 6,71; 2Tim 2,19) 65 Und er sprach: Darum habe ich euch gesagt: Niemand kann zu mir kommen, es sei ihm denn von meinem Vater gegeben! (Joh 6,44) 66 Aus diesem Anlass zogen sich viele seiner Jünger zurück und gingen nicht mehr mit ihm. (Lk 9,62; Joh 6,15; Hebr 10,38) 67 Da sprach Jesus zu den Zwölfen: Wollt ihr nicht auch weggehen? (Jos 24,15; Rut 1,11; 2Sam 15,19) 68 Da antwortete ihm Simon Petrus: Herr, zu wem sollen wir gehen? Du hast Worte ewigen Lebens; (Apg 5,20; 2Tim 1,10; 1Joh 5,11) 69 und wir haben geglaubt und erkannt, dass du der Christus bist, der Sohn des lebendigen Gottes! 70 Jesus antwortete ihnen: Habe ich nicht euch Zwölf erwählt? Und doch ist einer von euch ein Teufel! (Joh 15,16) 71 Er redete aber von Judas, Simons Sohn, dem Ischariot, denn dieser sollte ihn verraten, er, der einer von den Zwölfen war.

1 Some time after this, Jesus crossed over to the other side of the Sea of Galilee. It is also called the Sea of Tiberias. 2 A large crowd of people followed him. They had seen the signs he had done by healing ill people. 3 Then Jesus went up on a mountainside. There he sat down with his disciples. 4 The Jewish Passover Feast was near. 5 Jesus looked up and saw a large crowd coming towards him. So he said to Philip, ‘Where can we buy bread for these people to eat?’ 6 He asked this only to test Philip. He already knew what he was going to do. 7 Philip answered him, ‘Suppose we were able to buy enough bread for each person to have just a bite. That would take more than half a year’s pay!’ 8 Another of his disciples spoke up. It was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. He said, 9 ‘Here is a boy with five small loaves of barley bread. He also has two small fish. But how far will that go in such a large crowd?’ 10 Jesus said, ‘Have the people sit down.’ There was plenty of grass in that place, and they sat down. About 5,000 men were there. 11 Then Jesus took the loaves and gave thanks. He handed out the bread to those who were seated. He gave them as much as they wanted. And he did the same with the fish. 12 When all of them had enough to eat, Jesus spoke to his disciples. ‘Gather the leftover pieces,’ he said. ‘Don’t waste anything.’ 13 So they gathered what was left over from the five barley loaves. They filled 12 baskets with the pieces left by those who had eaten. 14 The people saw the sign that Jesus did. Then they began to say, ‘This must be the Prophet who is supposed to come into the world.’ 15 But Jesus knew that they planned to come and force him to be their king. So he went away again to a mountain by himself. 



16 When evening came, Jesus’ disciples went down to the Sea of Galilee. 17 There they got into a boat and headed across the lake towards Capernaum. By now it was dark. Jesus had not yet joined them. 18 A strong wind was blowing, and the water became rough. 19 They rowed about 3 or 4 miles. Then they saw Jesus coming towards the boat. He was walking on the water. They were frightened. 20 But he said to them, ‘It is I. Don’t be afraid.’ 21 Then they agreed to take him into the boat. Right away the boat reached the shore where they were heading. 22 The next day the crowd that had stayed on the other side of the lake realised something. They saw that only one boat had been there. They knew that Jesus had not got into it with his disciples. And they knew that the disciples had gone away alone. 23 Then some boats arrived from Tiberias. It was near the place where the people had eaten the bread after the Lord gave thanks. 24 The crowd realised that Jesus and his disciples were not there. So they got into boats and went to Capernaum to look for Jesus. 



25 They found him on the other side of the lake. They asked him, ‘Rabbi, when did you get here?’ 26 Jesus answered, ‘What I’m about to tell you is true. You are not looking for me because you saw the signs I did. You are looking for me because you ate the loaves until you were full. 27 Do not work for food that spoils. Work for food that lasts for ever. That is the food the Son of Man will give you. For God the Father has put his seal of approval on him.’ 28 Then they asked him, ‘What does God want from us? What works does he want us to do?’ 29 Jesus answered, ‘God’s work is to believe in the one he has sent.’ 30 So they asked him, ‘What sign will you give us? What will you do so we can see it and believe you? 31 Long ago our people ate the manna in the desert. It is written in Scripture, “The Lord gave them bread from heaven to eat.” ’ (2Mo 16,4; Neh 9,15; Ps 78,24; Ps 78,25) 32 Jesus said to them, ‘What I’m about to tell you is true. It is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven. It is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 The bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven. He gives life to the world.’ 34 ‘Sir’, they said, ‘always give us this bread.’ 35 Then Jesus said, ‘I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry. And whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. 36 But it is just as I told you. You have seen me, and you still do not believe. 37 Everyone the Father gives me will come to me. I will never send away anyone who comes to me. 38 I have not come down from heaven to do what I want to do. I have come to do what the one who sent me wants me to do. 39 The one who sent me doesn’t want me to lose anyone he has given me. He wants me to raise them up on the last day. 40 My Father wants all who look to the Son and believe in him to have eternal life. I will raise them up on the last day.’ 41 Then the Jews there began to complain about Jesus. That was because he said, ‘I am the bread that came down from heaven.’ 42 They said, ‘Isn’t this Jesus, the son of Joseph? Don’t we know his father and mother? How can he now say, “I came down from heaven”?’ 43 ‘Stop complaining among yourselves,’ Jesus answered. 44 ‘No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me brings them. Then I will raise them up on the last day. 45 It is written in the Prophets, “God will teach all of them.” Everyone who has heard the Father and learned from him comes to me. (Jes 54,13) 46 No one has seen the Father except the one who has come from God. Only he has seen the Father. 47 What I’m about to tell you is true. Everyone who believes has life for ever. 48 I am the bread of life. 49 Long ago your people ate the manna in the desert, and they still died. 50 But here is the bread that comes down from heaven. A person can eat it and not die. 51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Everyone who eats some of this bread will live for ever. This bread is my body. I will give it for the life of the world.’ 52 Then the Jews began to argue sharply among themselves. They said, ‘How can this man give us his body to eat?’ 53 Jesus said to them, ‘What I’m about to tell you is true. You must eat the Son of Man’s body and drink his blood. If you don’t, you have no life in you. 54 Anyone who eats my body and drinks my blood has eternal life. I will raise them up on the last day. 55 My body is real food. My blood is real drink. 56 Anyone who eats my body and drinks my blood remains in me. And I remain in them. 57 The living Father sent me, and I live because of him. In the same way, those who feed on me will live because of me. 58 This is the bread that came down from heaven. Long ago your people ate manna and died. But whoever eats this bread will live for ever.’ 59 He said this while he was teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum. 



60 Jesus’ disciples heard this. Many of them said, ‘This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?’ 61 Jesus was aware that his disciples were complaining about his teaching. So he said to them, ‘Does this upset you? 62 Then what if you see the Son of Man go up to where he was before? 63 The Holy Spirit gives life. The body means nothing at all. The words I have spoken to you are full of the Spirit. They give life. 64 But there are some of you who do not believe.’ Jesus had known from the beginning which of them did not believe. And he had known who was going to hand him over to his enemies. 65 So he continued speaking. He said, ‘This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father helps them.’ 66 From this time on, many of his disciples turned back. They no longer followed him. 67 ‘You don’t want to leave also, do you?’ Jesus asked the 12 disciples. 68 Simon Peter answered him, ‘Lord, who can we go to? You have the words of eternal life. 69 We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.’ 70 Then Jesus replied, ‘Didn’t I choose you, the 12 disciples? But one of you is a devil!’ 71 He meant Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. Judas was one of the 12 disciples. But later he was going to hand Jesus over to his enemies.
