Die Verfolgung des Rests der Midianiter. Strafgericht über untreue Städte in Israel

1 Aber die Männer von Ephraim sprachen zu ihm: Warum hast du uns das angetan, dass du uns nicht gerufen hast, als du gegen die Midianiter in den Kampf gezogen bist? Und sie stritten heftig mit ihm. (Ri 12,1; 2Sam 19,41; Spr 13,10) 2 Er aber sprach zu ihnen: Was habe ich jetzt getan, das eurer Tat gleich wäre? Ist nicht die Nachlese Ephraims besser als die Weinlese Abiesers? (Ri 6,11; Phil 2,3) 3 Gott hat die Fürsten der Midianiter, Oreb und Seb, in eure Hand gegeben; wie hätte ich tun können, was ihr getan habt? Als er dies sagte, ließ ihr Zorn von ihm ab. 4 Als nun Gideon an den Jordan kam, ging er hinüber mit den 300 Mann, die bei ihm waren; die waren müde und setzten dennoch die Verfolgung fort. (1Sam 30,10; Jes 40,31; 2Tim 2,3; Hebr 6,11; Hebr 12,1)

5 Und er sprach zu den Leuten von Sukkot: Gebt doch dem Volk, das bei mir ist, einige Laibe Brot, denn sie sind erschöpft, und ich jage den Königen der Midianiter, Sebach und Zalmunna, nach! (1Mo 33,17; Röm 12,13; Gal 6,10) 6 Aber die Obersten von Sukkot sprachen: Ist denn die Faust Sebachs und Zalmunnas schon in deiner Hand, dass wir deinem Heer Brot geben sollen? (1Sam 25,11; 2Sam 17,27) 7 Gideon sprach: Wohlan, wenn der HERR Sebach und Zalmunna in meine Hand gibt, so will ich euer Fleisch mit Dornen aus der Wüste und mit Disteln dreschen! (Ri 8,16) 8 Und er zog von dort nach Pnuel hinauf und redete mit ihnen in gleicher Weise. Und die Leute von Pnuel antworteten ihm wie die von Sukkot. (1Mo 32,30; 1Kön 12,25) 9 Da sprach er auch zu den Leuten von Pnuel: Komme ich mit Frieden wieder, so will ich diesen Turm niederreißen! (Ri 8,17; 1Kön 22,27) 10 Aber Sebach und Zalmunna waren mit ihrem Heer in Karkor, etwa 15 000, der ganze Rest vom Heer der Söhne des Ostens; denn 120 000, die das Schwert ziehen konnten, waren gefallen. (Ri 7,12) 11 Und Gideon zog hinauf auf der Straße derer, die in Zelten wohnen östlich von Nobach und Jogbeha; und er schlug das Lager, denn das Heer war sorglos. 12 Und als Sebach und Zalmunna flohen, jagte er ihnen nach und fing die beiden Könige der Midianiter, Sebach und Zalmunna, und er versetzte das ganze Heer in Schrecken. (Ps 83,12; Am 2,14) 13 Und Gideon, der Sohn des Joas, kehrte um von der Schlacht beim Aufstieg von Heres. (Ri 6,14) 14 Und er fing einen Knaben von den Leuten von Sukkot und fragte ihn aus; der schrieb ihm die Obersten von Sukkot und ihre Ältesten auf, 77 Mann. (Ri 1,24; 1Sam 30,11) 15 Und er kam zu den Leuten von Sukkot und sprach: Siehe, hier sind Sebach und Zalmunna, wegen denen ihr über mich gespottet und gesprochen habt: »Ist denn die Faust Sebachs und Zalmunnas schon in deiner Hand, dass wir deinen Leuten, die müde sind, Brot geben sollten?« (Ri 8,6) 16 Und er ließ die Ältesten der Stadt ergreifen und ließ Dornen aus der Wüste und Disteln holen und züchtigte die Leute von Sukkot damit. (Ri 8,7) 17 Den Turm von Pnuel aber riss er nieder und tötete die Leute der Stadt. (Ri 8,9) 18 Und er sprach zu Sebach und Zalmunna: Wie waren die Männer, die ihr in Tabor erschlagen habt? Sie sprachen: Sie waren wie du, ein jeder so schön wie Königssöhne! (Jos 19,22) 19 Er aber sprach: Das sind meine Brüder, die Söhne meiner Mutter gewesen. So wahr der HERR lebt, wenn ihr die hättet leben lassen, so würde ich euch nicht töten! (4Mo 35,19) 20 Und er sprach zu seinem erstgeborenen Sohn Jeter: Steh auf und erschlage sie! Aber der Knabe zog sein Schwert nicht; denn er fürchtete sich, weil er noch jung war. (Jos 10,24; 1Sam 15,33; Ps 149,9) 21 Sebach aber und Zalmunna sprachen zu Gideon: Steh du auf und erschlage uns; denn wie der Mann, so seine Kraft! Da stand Gideon auf und tötete Sebach und Zalmunna; und er nahm die Halbmonde, die an den Hälsen ihrer Kamele waren. (1Sam 15,33; Jes 3,18)

Gideons weiterer Richterdienst

22 Da sprachen die Männer Israels zu Gideon: Herrsche über uns, du und dein Sohn und der Sohn deines Sohnes, weil du uns aus der Hand der Midianiter errettet hast! (Ri 9,6; Ri 18,1; Ri 19,1) 23 Aber Gideon sprach zu ihnen: Ich will nicht über euch herrschen, mein Sohn soll auch nicht über euch herrschen; der HERR soll über euch herrschen! 24 Und Gideon sprach zu ihnen: Eins erbitte ich von euch: Gebt mir jeder die Ohrringe, die er erbeutet hat! Denn weil sie Ismaeliter waren, hatten sie goldene Ohrringe. (1Mo 25,13; 1Mo 37,25; Ps 27,4; Spr 30,7)

25 Sie sprachen: Die wollen wir dir gerne geben! Und sie breiteten ein Gewand aus, und jeder warf die Ohrringe von der Beute darauf. (2Mo 32,2) 26 Und die goldenen Ohrringe, die er erbeten hatte, hatten ein Gewicht von 1 700 Schekel Gold, ohne die Halbmonde und Ohrengehänge und Purpurkleider, welche die Könige der Midianiter getragen hatten, und ohne den Halsschmuck ihrer Kamele. (Dan 5,29) 27 Und Gideon machte ein Ephod^[1] daraus und stellte es in seiner Stadt auf, in Ophra. Und ganz Israel hurte ihm dort nach. Und das wurde zum Fallstrick für Gideon und sein Haus. 28 Die Midianiter aber waren vor den Söhnen Israels gedemütigt worden und erhoben ihr Haupt nicht mehr; und das Land hatte 40 Jahre lang Ruhe, solange Gideon lebte. (Ri 3,11; Ri 3,30; Ri 5,31; 1Sam 7,13)

29 Und Jerub-Baal, der Sohn des Joas, ging hin und wohnte in seinem Haus. (Ri 6,32; 1Sam 12,11) 30 Gideon hatte aber 70 Söhne, die aus seinen Lenden hervorgegangen waren, denn er hatte viele Frauen. (Ri 9,2; Ri 9,5) 31 Und seine Nebenfrau, die er in Sichem hatte, gebar ihm auch einen Sohn, dem gab er den Namen Abimelech. (Ri 9,1; Ri 9,18) 32 Und Gideon, der Sohn des Joas, starb in gutem Alter und wurde in Ophra begraben, im Grab seines Vaters Joas, des Abiesriters. (1Mo 25,8; Ri 6,24; Hi 5,26) 33 Es geschah aber, als Gideon gestorben war, da kehrten die Kinder Israels um und hurten [wieder] den Baalen nach und machten den Baal-Berit zu ihrem Gott. 35 und sie erwiesen keine Güte an dem Haus Jerub-Baal-Gideons, trotz allen Wohltaten, die er an Israel getan hatte. (Ri 9,16; 2Chr 24,22; Pred 9,15)

And they did chide with him sharply. 2 And he said unto them, What have I done now in comparison of you? Is not the gleaning of the grapes of Ephraim better than the vintage of Abiezer? 3 God hath delivered into your hands the princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb: and what was I able to do in comparison of you? Then their anger was abated toward him, when he had said that. 4 And Gideon came to Jordan, and passed over, he, and the three hundred men that were with him, faint, yet pursuing them . 5 And he said unto the men of Succoth, Give, I pray you, loaves of bread unto the people that follow me; for they be faint, and I am pursuing after Zebah and Zalmunna, kings of Midian. 6 And the princes of Succoth said, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thine hand, that we should give bread unto thine army? 7 And Gideon said, Therefore when the LORD hath delivered Zebah and Zalmunna into mine hand, then I will tear your flesh with the thorns of the wilderness and with briers. 8 And he went up thence to Penuel, and spake unto them likewise: and the men of Penuel answered him as the men of Succoth had answered him . 9 And he spake also unto the men of Penuel, saying, When I come again in peace, I will break down this tower. 10 Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor, and their hosts with them, about fifteen thousand men , all that were left of all the hosts of the children of the east: for there fell an hundred and twenty thousand men that drew sword. 11 And Gideon went up by the way of them that dwelt in tents on the east of Nobah and Jogbehah, and smote the host: for the host was secure. 12 And when Zebah and Zalmunna fled, he pursued after them, and took the two kings of Midian, Zebah and Zalmunna, and discomfited all the host. 13 And Gideon the son of Joash returned from battle before the sun was up , 14 And caught a young man of the men of Succoth, and enquired of him: and he described unto him the princes of Succoth, and the elders thereof, even threescore and seventeen men. 15 And he came unto the men of Succoth, and said, Behold Zebah and Zalmunna, with whom ye did upbraid me, saying, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thine hand, that we should give bread unto thy men that are weary? 16 And he took the elders of the city, and thorns of the wilderness and briers, and with them he taught the men of Succoth. 17 And he beat down the tower of Penuel, and slew the men of the city. 18 Then said he unto Zebah and Zalmunna, What manner of men were they whom ye slew at Tabor? And they answered, As thou art , so were they; each one resembled the children of a king. 19 And he said, They were my brethren, even the sons of my mother: as the LORD liveth, if ye had saved them alive, I would not slay you. 20 And he said unto Jether his firstborn, Up, and slay them. But the youth drew not his sword: for he feared, because he was yet a youth. 21 Then Zebah and Zalmunna said, Rise thou, and fall upon us: for as the man is, so is his strength. And Gideon arose, and slew Zebah and Zalmunna, and took away the ornaments that were on their camels'necks. 22 Then the men of Israel said unto Gideon, Rule thou over us, both thou, and thy son, and thy son' son also: for thou hast delivered us from the hand of Midian. 23 And Gideon said unto them, I will not rule over you, neither shall my son rule over you: the LORD shall rule over you. 24 And Gideon said unto them, I would desire a request of you, that ye would give me every man the earrings of his prey. (For they had golden earrings, because they were Ishmaelites.) 25 And they answered, We will willingly give them . And they spread a garment, and did cast therein every man the earrings of his prey. 26 And the weight of the golden earrings that he requested was a thousand and seven hundred shekels of gold; beside ornaments, and collars, and purple raiment that was on the kings of Midian, and beside the chains that were about their camels'necks. 27 And Gideon made an ephod thereof, and put it in his city, even in Ophrah: and all Israel went thither a whoring after it: which thing became a snare unto Gideon, and to his house. 28 Thus was Midian subdued before the children of Israel, so that they lifted up their heads no more. And the country was in quietness forty years in the days of Gideon. 29 And Jerubbaal the son of Joash went and dwelt in his own house. 30 And Gideon had threescore and ten sons of his body begotten: for he had many wives. 31 And his concubine that was in Shechem, she also bare him a son, whose name he called Abimelech. 32 And Gideon the son of Joash died in a good old age, and was buried in the sepulchre of Joash his father, in Ophrah of the Abiezrites. 33 And it came to pass, as soon as Gideon was dead, that the children of Israel turned again, and went a whoring after Baalim, and made Baalberith their god. 34 And the children of Israel remembered not the LORD their God, who had delivered them out of the hands of all their enemies on every side: 35 Neither shewed they kindness to the house of Jerubbaal, namely , Gideon, according to all the goodness which he had shewed unto Israel.
