1 Aber im fünfzehnten Jahr der Regierung des Kaisers Tiberius^[1], als Pontius Pilatus Statthalter von Judäa war und Herodes^[2] Vierfürst von Galiläa, sein Bruder Philippus aber Vierfürst von Ituräa und dem Gebiet von Trachonitis, und Lysanias Vierfürst von Abilene, (Mt 2,22; Mt 14,1; Mt 14,3; Lk 23,6)

3 Und er kam in die ganze Umgegend des Jordan und verkündigte eine Taufe der Buße^[3] zur Vergebung der Sünden, (Hes 36,25; Apg 2,38) 4 wie geschrieben steht im Buch der Worte des Propheten Jesaja, der spricht: »Die Stimme eines Rufenden [ertönt] in der Wüste: Bereitet den Weg des Herrn, macht seine Pfade eben! 7 Er sprach nun zu der Volksmenge, die hinausging, um sich von ihm taufen zu lassen: Schlangenbrut! Wer hat euch unterwiesen, dem kommenden Zorn zu entfliehen? 8 So bringt nun Früchte, die der Buße würdig sind! Und fangt nicht an, bei euch selbst zu sagen: Wir haben Abraham zum Vater! Denn ich sage euch: Gott vermag dem Abraham aus diesen Steinen Kinder zu erwecken. (Jes 1,16; Lk 19,9; Joh 8,39; Apg 26,20; Röm 4,16; 2Kor 7,9; Gal 3,7; Gal 3,29)

9 Es ist aber auch schon die Axt an die Wurzel der Bäume gelegt. Jeder Baum nun, der keine gute Frucht bringt, wird abgehauen und ins Feuer geworfen! (Mt 3,10) 10 Da fragte ihn die Menge und sprach: Was sollen wir denn tun? (Apg 2,37) 11 Und er antwortete und sprach zu ihnen: Wer zwei Hemden hat, gebe dem, der keines hat; und wer Speise hat, der mache es ebenso! (Apg 4,32; 2Kor 8,14; 1Joh 3,17) 12 Es kamen auch Zöllner^[5], um sich taufen zu lassen, und sprachen zu ihm: Meister, was sollen wir tun? (3Mo 19,13; 1Tim 6,8) 15 Da aber das Volk in Erwartung stand und alle in ihren Herzen sich wegen Johannes fragten, ob er vielleicht der Christus sei, (Joh 10,24) 16 antwortete Johannes allen und sprach: Ich taufe euch mit Wasser; es kommt aber einer, der stärker ist als ich, und ich bin nicht würdig, ihm seinen Schuhriemen zu lösen; der wird euch mit Heiligem Geist und Feuer taufen. 17 Er hat die Worfschaufel in seiner Hand, und er wird seine Tenne durch und durch reinigen und den Weizen in seine Scheune sammeln; die Spreu aber wird er mit unauslöschlichem Feuer verbrennen! (Ps 21,10; Jes 47,14; Jes 66,24; Jer 15,7; Mt 13,41)

18 Auch mit vielen anderen Ermahnungen verkündigte er dem Volk die frohe Botschaft. (Joh 3,27) 19 Der Vierfürst Herodes aber, da er von ihm getadelt wurde wegen Herodias, der Frau seines Bruders Philippus, und wegen all des Bösen, was Herodes tat, (1Kön 18,17; 2Chr 25,16; Mt 14,1) 20 fügte zu allem noch das hinzu, dass er den Johannes ins Gefängnis warf. (Mt 11,2; Mt 14,3)

21 Es geschah aber, als alles Volk sich taufen ließ und auch Jesus getauft wurde und betete, da tat sich der Himmel auf, (Dan 9,20; Lk 9,28) 22 und der Heilige Geist stieg in leiblicher Gestalt wie eine Taube auf ihn herab, und eine Stimme ertönte aus dem Himmel, die sprach: Du bist mein geliebter Sohn; an dir habe ich Wohlgefallen!
