1En el principio ya existía el Verbo, y el Verbo estaba con Dios, y el Verbo era Dios.2Él estaba con Dios en el principio.3Por medio de él todas las cosas fueron creadas; sin él, nada de lo creado llegó a existir.4En él estaba la vida, y la vida era la luz de la humanidad.5Esta luz resplandece en las tinieblas, y las tinieblas no han podido extinguirla.[1]6Vino un hombre llamado Juan. Dios lo envió7como testigo para dar testimonio de la luz, a fin de que por medio de él todos creyeran.8Juan no era la luz, sino que vino para dar testimonio de la luz.9Esa luz verdadera, la que alumbra a todo ser humano, venía a este mundo.[2]10El que era la luz ya estaba en el mundo, y el mundo fue creado por medio de él, pero el mundo no lo reconoció.11Vino a lo que era suyo, pero los suyos no lo recibieron.12Mas a cuantos lo recibieron, a los que creen en su nombre, les dio el derecho de ser hijos de Dios.13Estos no nacen de la sangre, ni por deseos naturales, ni por voluntad humana, sino que nacen de Dios.14Y el Verbo se hizo hombre y habitó[3] entre nosotros. Y hemos contemplado su gloria, la gloria que corresponde al Hijo unigénito del Padre, lleno de gracia y de verdad.15Juan dio testimonio de él, y a voz en grito proclamó: «Este es aquel de quien yo decía: “El que viene después de mí es superior a mí, porque existía antes que yo”».16De su plenitud todos hemos recibido gracia sobre gracia,17pues la ley fue dada por medio de Moisés, mientras que la gracia y la verdad nos han llegado por medio de Jesucristo.18A Dios nadie lo ha visto nunca; el Hijo unigénito, quien es Dios[4] y que vive en unión íntima con el Padre, nos lo ha dado a conocer.
Juan el Bautista niega ser el Cristo
19Este es el testimonio de Juan cuando los judíos de Jerusalén enviaron sacerdotes y levitas a preguntarle quién era.20No se negó a declararlo, sino que confesó con franqueza: ―Yo no soy el Cristo.21―¿Quién eres entonces? —le preguntaron—. ¿Acaso eres Elías? ―No lo soy. ―¿Eres el profeta? ―No lo soy.22―¿Entonces quién eres? ¡Tenemos que llevar una respuesta a los que nos enviaron! ¿Qué dices de ti mismo?23―Yo soy la voz del que grita en el desierto: “Enderezad el camino del Señor” —respondió Juan, con las palabras del profeta Isaías. (Jes 40,3)24Algunos que habían sido enviados por los fariseos25lo interrogaron: ―Pues, si no eres el Cristo ni Elías ni el profeta, ¿por qué bautizas?26―Yo bautizo con[5] agua, pero entre vosotros hay alguien a quien no conocéis,27y que viene detrás de mí, al cual yo no soy digno ni siquiera de desatarle la correa de las sandalias.28Todo esto sucedió en Betania, al otro lado del río Jordán, donde Juan estaba bautizando.
Jesús, el Cordero de Dios
29Al día siguiente Juan vio a Jesús que se acercaba a él, y dijo: «¡Aquí tenéis al Cordero de Dios, que quita el pecado del mundo!30De este hablaba yo cuando dije: “Detrás de mí viene un hombre que es superior a mí, porque existía antes que yo”.31Yo ni siquiera lo conocía, pero, para que él se revelara al pueblo de Israel, vine bautizando con agua».32Juan declaró: «Vi al Espíritu descender del cielo como una paloma y permanecer sobre él.33Yo mismo no lo conocía, pero el que me envió a bautizar con agua me dijo: “Aquel sobre quien veas que el Espíritu desciende y permanece es el que bautiza con el Espíritu Santo”.
Los primeros discípulos de Jesús
34Yo lo he visto y por eso testifico que este es el Hijo de Dios».35Al día siguiente Juan estaba de nuevo allí, con dos de sus discípulos.36Al ver a Jesús que pasaba por ahí, dijo: ―¡Aquí tenéis al Cordero de Dios!37Cuando los dos discípulos le oyeron decir esto, siguieron a Jesús.38Jesús se volvió y, al ver que lo seguían, les preguntó: ―¿Qué buscáis? ―Rabí, ¿dónde te hospedas? (Rabí significa: Maestro).39―Venid a ver —les contestó Jesús. Ellos fueron, pues, y vieron dónde se hospedaba, y aquel mismo día se quedaron con él. Eran como las cuatro de la tarde.[6] (Joh 19,14)40Andrés, hermano de Simón Pedro, era uno de los dos que, al oír a Juan, habían seguido a Jesús.41Andrés encontró primero a su hermano Simón, y le dijo: ―Hemos encontrado al Mesías (es decir, el Cristo).42Luego lo llevó a Jesús, quien, mirándolo fijamente, le dijo: ―Tú eres Simón, hijo de Juan. Serás llamado Cefas (es decir, Pedro).
Jesús llama a Felipe y a Natanael
43Al día siguiente, Jesús decidió salir hacia Galilea. Se encontró con Felipe, y lo llamó: ―Sígueme.44Felipe era del pueblo de Betsaida, lo mismo que Andrés y Pedro.45Felipe buscó a Natanael y le dijo: ―Hemos encontrado a Jesús de Nazaret, el hijo de José, aquel de quien escribió Moisés en la ley, y de quien escribieron los profetas.46―¡De Nazaret! —replicó Natanael—. ¿Acaso de allí puede salir algo bueno? ―Ven a ver —le contestó Felipe.47Cuando Jesús vio que Natanael se le acercaba, comentó: ―Aquí tenéis un verdadero israelita, en quien no hay falsedad.48―¿De qué me conoces? —le preguntó Natanael. ―Antes de que Felipe te llamara, cuando aún estabas bajo la higuera, ya te había visto.49―Rabí, ¡tú eres el Hijo de Dios! ¡Tú eres el Rey de Israel! —declaró Natanael.50―¿Lo crees porque te dije que te vi cuando estabas debajo de la higuera? ¡Vas a ver aun cosas más grandes que estas! Y añadió:51―Ciertamente os aseguro que veréis el cielo abierto, y a los ángeles de Dios subir y bajar sobre el Hijo del hombre.

Behold, the Lamb of God
29The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! (1Mo 22,8; 2Mo 12,3; Jes 53,7; Joh 1,36; Joh 3,16; Joh 4,42; Joh 12,47; Apg 8,32; Hebr 10,4; Hebr 10,11; 1Petr 1,19; 1Joh 2,2; 1Joh 3,5; 1Joh 4,14; Offb 5,6)30This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who ranks before me, because he was before me.’ (Joh 1,15; Joh 1,27)31I myself did not know him, but for this purpose I came baptizing with water, that he might be revealed to Israel.” (Lk 1,17; Lk 1,76)32And John bore witness: “I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. (Jes 11,2; Mt 3,16; Mk 1,10; Lk 3,22; Joh 1,7; Apg 10,38)33I myself did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ (Mt 3,11; Mk 1,8; Lk 3,2; Lk 3,16; Joh 1,6; Joh 3,5; Apg 1,5)34And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son[9] of God.”
Jesus Calls the First Disciples
35The next day again John was standing with two of his disciples,36and he looked at Jesus as he walked by and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God!” (Joh 1,29)37The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus.38Jesus turned and saw them following and said to them, “What are you seeking?” And they said to him, “Rabbi” (which means Teacher), “where are you staying?” (Mk 10,51; Joh 1,49; Joh 3,2; Joh 3,26; Joh 6,25; Joh 18,4; Joh 18,7; Joh 20,15; Joh 20,16)39He said to them, “Come and you will see.” So they came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day, for it was about the tenth hour.[10]40One of the two who heard John speak and followed Jesus[11] was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. (Mt 4,18; Mk 1,16; Lk 5,2)41He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means Christ). (Joh 4,25)42He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of John. You shall be called Cephas” (which means Peter[12]). (Mt 16,18; Joh 21,15; 1Kor 1,12; 1Kor 3,22)
Jesus Calls Philip and Nathanael
43The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, “Follow me.” (Joh 1,28; Joh 1,35; Joh 2,1)44Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. (Joh 12,21)45Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found him of whom Moses in the Law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” (Mt 2,23; Lk 3,23; Lk 16,16; Lk 24,27; Joh 6,42; Joh 21,2)46Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.” (Joh 7,41; Joh 7,52)47Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit!” (Ps 32,2; Ps 73,1; Zef 3,13; Röm 9,4; Röm 9,6; Offb 14,5)48Nathanael said to him, “How do you know me?” Jesus answered him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” (Joh 2,24)49Nathanael answered him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God!
