1Vivía en Cesarea un centurión llamado Cornelio, del regimiento conocido como el Italiano.2Él y toda su familia eran devotos y temerosos de Dios. Realizaba muchas obras de beneficencia para el pueblo de Israel y oraba a Dios constantemente.3Un día, como a las tres de la tarde,[1] tuvo una visión. Vio claramente a un ángel de Dios que se le acercaba y le decía: ―¡Cornelio!4―¿Qué quieres, Señor? —le preguntó Cornelio, mirándolo fijamente y con mucho miedo. ―Dios ha recibido tus oraciones y tus obras de beneficencia como una ofrenda —le contestó el ángel—.5Envía de inmediato a algunos hombres a Jope para que hagan venir a un tal Simón, apodado Pedro.6Él se hospeda con Simón el curtidor, que tiene su casa junto al mar.7Después de que se fuera el ángel que le había hablado, Cornelio llamó a dos de sus siervos y a un soldado devoto de los que le servían regularmente.8Les explicó todo lo que había sucedido y los envió a Jope.
La visión de Pedro
9Al día siguiente, mientras ellos iban de camino y se acercaban a la ciudad, Pedro subió a la azotea a orar. Era casi el mediodía.[2]10Tuvo hambre y quiso algo de comer. Mientras se lo preparaban, le sobrevino un éxtasis.11Vio el cielo abierto y algo parecido a una gran sábana que, suspendida por las cuatro puntas, descendía hacia la tierra.12En ella había toda clase de cuadrúpedos, como también reptiles y aves.13―Levántate, Pedro; mata y come —le dijo una voz.14―¡De ninguna manera, Señor! —replicó Pedro—. Jamás he comido nada impuro o inmundo.15Por segunda vez le insistió la voz: ―Lo que Dios ha purificado, tú no lo llames impuro.16Esto sucedió tres veces, y en seguida la sábana fue recogida al cielo.17Pedro no acertaba a explicarse cuál podría ser el significado de la visión. Mientras tanto, los hombres enviados por Cornelio, que estaban preguntando por la casa de Simón, se presentaron a la puerta.18Llamando, averiguaron si allí se hospedaba Simón, apodado Pedro.19Mientras Pedro seguía reflexionando sobre el significado de la visión, el Espíritu le dijo: «Mira, Simón, tres[3] hombres te buscan.20Date prisa, baja y no dudes en ir con ellos, porque yo los he enviado».21Pedro bajó y les dijo a los hombres: ―Aquí estoy; yo soy el que buscáis. ¿Qué asunto os ha traído hasta aquí?22Ellos le contestaron: ―Venimos de parte del centurión Cornelio, un hombre justo y temeroso de Dios, respetado por todo el pueblo judío. Un ángel de Dios le dio instrucciones de invitarte a su casa para escuchar lo que tú tienes que decirle.

23Entonces Pedro los invitó a pasar y los hospedó. Al día siguiente, Pedro se fue con ellos acompañado de algunos creyentes de Jope.24Un día después llegó a Cesarea. Cornelio estaba esperándolo con los parientes y amigos íntimos que había reunido.25Al llegar Pedro a la casa, Cornelio salió a recibirlo y, postrándose delante de él, le rindió homenaje.26Pero Pedro hizo que se levantara, y le dijo: ―Ponte de pie, que solo soy un hombre como tú.27Pedro entró en la casa conversando con él, y encontró a muchos reunidos.28Entonces les habló así: ―Vosotros sabéis muy bien que nuestra ley prohíbe que un judío se junte con un extranjero o lo visite. Pero Dios me ha hecho ver que a nadie debo llamar impuro o inmundo.29Por eso, cuando enviasteis por mí, vine sin poner ninguna objeción. Ahora permitidme que os pregunte: ¿para qué me habéis hecho venir?30Cornelio contestó: ―Hace cuatro días a esta misma hora, las tres de la tarde, estaba yo en casa orando.[4] De repente apareció delante de mí un hombre vestido con ropa brillante,31y me dijo: “Cornelio, Dios ha oído tu oración y se ha acordado de tus obras de beneficencia.32Por lo tanto, envía a alguien a Jope para hacer venir a Simón, apodado Pedro, que se hospeda en casa de Simón el curtidor, junto al mar”.33Así que inmediatamente mandé a llamarte, y tú has tenido la bondad de venir. 1At Caesarea there was a man named Cornelius, a centurion of what was known as the Italian Cohort, (Mt 27,27; Mk 15,16; Joh 18,3; Joh 18,12)2a devout man who feared God with all his household, gave alms generously to the people, and prayed continually to God. (Apg 10,22; Apg 13,16; Apg 13,26)3About the ninth hour of the day[1] he saw clearly in a vision an angel of God come in and say to him, “Cornelius.” (Apg 3,1; Apg 8,26; Apg 10,17; Apg 10,19)4And he stared at him in terror and said, “What is it, Lord?” And he said to him, “Your prayers and your alms have ascended as a memorial before God. (Ps 141,2; Dan 10,12; Mt 26,13; Mk 14,9; Apg 10,31; Hebr 6,10; Offb 8,4)5And now send men to Joppa and bring one Simon who is called Peter.6He is lodging with one Simon, a tanner, whose house is by the sea.” (Apg 9,43)7When the angel who spoke to him had departed, he called two of his servants and a devout soldier from among those who attended him,8and having related everything to them, he sent them to Joppa.

9The next day, as they were on their journey and approaching the city, Peter went up on the housetop about the sixth hour[2] to pray. (1Sam 9,25; 2Kön 23,12; Ps 55,17; Jer 19,13; Jer 32,29; Zef 1,5; Apg 11,5)10And he became hungry and wanted something to eat, but while they were preparing it, he fell into a trance (Apg 22,17)11and saw the heavens opened and something like a great sheet descending, being let down by its four corners upon the earth. I ask then why you sent for me.”30And Cornelius said, “Four days ago, about this hour, I was praying in my house at the ninth hour,[4] and behold, a man stood before me in bright clothing (Apg 1,10; Apg 3,1; Apg 10,9; Apg 10,23)31and said, ‘Cornelius, your prayer has been heard and your alms have been remembered before God. Now therefore we are all here in the presence of God to hear all that you have been commanded by the Lord.”
44While Peter was still saying these things, the Holy Spirit fell on all who heard the word. (Apg 2,4; Apg 11,15; Apg 15,8; 1Thess 1,5)45And the believers from among the circumcised who had come with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit was poured out even on the Gentiles. (Apg 2,17; Apg 2,38; Apg 10,23; Apg 11,2)46For they were hearing them speaking in tongues and extolling God. Then Peter declared, (Mk 16,17)47“Can anyone withhold water for baptizing these people, who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?” (Apg 2,4; Apg 8,36; Apg 11,17; Apg 15,8)48And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ.
