Lucrarea lui Ioan Botezătorul

1 În zilele acelea, a venit Ioan Botezătorul, predicând în pustia Iudeei (Mar 1:2; Lu 3:1; Ioan 1:19) 2 și zicând: „Pocăiți‑vă, căci s‑a apropiat Împărăția Cerurilor^[1]!“ 3 Căci acesta este cel despre care s‑a vorbit prin profetul Isaia, care zice: „Un glas al celui ce strigă în pustie: «Pregătiți calea Domnului, neteziți‑I cărările!»“^[2] (Is 40:3) 4 Ioan purta o haină din păr de cămilă, iar în jurul mijlocului avea un brâu de piele. Lăcustele^[3] și mierea sălbatică erau hrana lui. 5 Atunci Ierusalimul, toată Iudeea și toți din vecinătatea Iordanului au început să iasă la el 6 și, mărturisindu‑și păcatele, erau botezați de el în râul Iordan. 7 Dar, când a văzut că mulți farisei^[4] și saduchei^[5] vin la botezul lui, Ioan le‑a zis: „Pui de vipere, cine v‑a avertizat să fugiți de mânia care vine?! (Fapte 23:8) 8 Faceți deci rod vrednic de pocăință! 9 Și să nu vă gândiți să spuneți în voi înșivă: «Îl avem ca tată pe Avraam!», căci vă spun că Dumnezeu poate să‑i ridice copii lui Avraam chiar din pietrele acestea! 10 Securea este pusă deja la rădăcina pomilor! Prin urmare, orice pom care nu face rod bun este tăiat și aruncat în foc. 11 Eu, într-adevăr, vă botez cu^[6] apă spre pocăință, dar vine după mine Cel Care este mai puternic decât mine, Căruia eu nu sunt vrednic să‑I dau jos^[7] sandalele! El vă va boteza cu Duhul Sfânt și cu foc. 12 El Își are în mână furca de treierat; Își va curăța aria și Își va aduna grâul în hambar. Pleava însă o va arde într‑un foc care nu se stinge.“

Botezul lui Isus

13 Atunci Isus a venit din Galileea la Iordan, la Ioan, ca să fie botezat de el. (Mar 1:9; Lu 3:21; Ioan 1:32) 14 Însă Ioan încerca să‑L oprească, zicând: – Eu am nevoie să fiu botezat de Tine, și Tu vii la mine? 15 Dar Isus, răspunzând, i‑a zis: – Lasă să fie așa acum, căci se cuvine să împlinim toată dreptatea. Atunci Ioan L‑a lăsat. 16 După ce a fost botezat, Isus a ieșit imediat din apă. Și iată că cerurile I‑au fost^[8] deschise și a văzut Duhul lui Dumnezeu coborând asemenea unui porumbel și venind peste El^[9]. (Is 42:1) 17 Și iată că un glas din ceruri spunea: „Acesta este Fiul Meu preaiubit, în Care‑Mi găsesc plăcerea!“^[10] (Ps 2:7; Is 42:1)

John the Baptist prepares the way

1 In those days John the Baptist came and preached in the Desert of Judea. 2 He said, ‘Turn away from your sins! The kingdom of heaven has come near.’ 3 John is the one Isaiah the prophet had spoken about. He had said, ‘A messenger is calling out in the desert, “Prepare the way for the Lord. Make straight paths for him.” ’ (Is 40:3) 4 John’s clothes were made out of camel’s hair. He had a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey. 5 People went out to him from Jerusalem and all Judea. They also came from the whole area around the River Jordan. 6 When they confessed their sins, John baptised them in the Jordan. 7 John saw many Pharisees and Sadducees coming to where he was baptising. He said to them, ‘You are like a nest of poisonous snakes! Who warned you to escape the coming of God’s anger? 8 Live in a way that shows you have turned away from your sins. 9 Don’t think you can say to yourselves, “Abraham is our father.” I tell you, God can raise up children for Abraham even from these stones. 10 The axe is ready to cut the roots of the trees. All the trees that don’t produce good fruit will be cut down. They will be thrown into the fire. 11 ‘I baptise you with water, calling you to turn away from your sins. But after me, someone is coming who is more powerful than I am. I’m not worthy to carry his sandals. He will baptise you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 12 His pitchfork is in his hand to clear the straw from his threshing-floor. He will gather his wheat into the storeroom. But he will burn the husks with fire that can’t be put out.’

Jesus is baptised

13 Jesus came from Galilee to the River Jordan. He wanted to be baptised by John. 14 But John tried to stop him. So he told Jesus, ‘I need to be baptised by you. So why do you come to me?’ 15 Jesus replied, ‘Let it be this way for now. It is right for us to do this. It carries out God’s holy plan.’ Then John agreed. 16 As soon as Jesus was baptised, he came up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened. Jesus saw the Spirit of God coming down on him like a dove. 17 A voice from heaven said, ‘This is my Son, and I love him. I am very pleased with him.’
