Chemare la pocăință

1 În acea vreme au sosit unii și I‑au istorisit lui Isus despre galileenii al căror sânge îl amestecase Pilat cu jertfele lor. 2 Isus, răspunzând, le‑a zis: „Credeți că acești galileeni au fost mai păcătoși decât toți ceilalți galileeni, pentru că au suferit aceste lucruri? 3 Vă spun că nu! Dar dacă nu vă pocăiți, toți veți pieri într‑un fel asemănător! 4 Sau credeți că acei optsprezece peste care a căzut turnul Siloamului și i‑a omorât au fost mai vinovați decât toți ceilalți oameni care locuiesc în Ierusalim? 5 Vă spun că nu! Ci dacă nu vă pocăiți, toți veți pieri într‑un fel asemănător^[1]!“ 6 Apoi le‑a spus această pildă: „Un om avea un smochin plantat în via sa. A venit să caute roade în el, dar n‑a găsit. 7 Atunci i‑a zis agricultorului: «Iată că sunt deja trei ani de când vin și caut roade în acest smochin, dar nu găsesc! Taie‑l deci! De ce să mai secătuiască pământul degeaba?!» 8 Însă acesta, răspunzând, i‑a zis: «Stăpâne, mai lasă‑l și anul acesta, iar eu voi săpa în jurul lui și îi voi pune gunoi. 9 Poate că, de acum înainte, va face roade. Dacă nu, îl vei tăia!»“

Vindecarea unei femei într‑o zi de Sabat

10 Într‑o zi de Sabat, Isus dădea învățătură într‑una din sinagogi. 11 Și iată că acolo era o femeie care de optsprezece ani avea un duh de neputință. Ea era încovoiată și nu se putea îndrepta pe deplin. 12 Când a văzut‑o, Isus a chemat‑o și i‑a zis: „Femeie, ești eliberată de neputința ta!“ 13 El Și‑a întins mâinile peste ea și deodată ea s‑a îndreptat; și‑L slăvea pe Dumnezeu. 14 Însă conducătorul sinagogii, indignat că Isus a vindecat în ziua de Sabat, a zis mulțimii: – Sunt șase zile în care trebuie să se lucreze. Veniți deci în acele zile să fiți vindecați, nu în ziua de Sabat! 15 Dar Domnul i‑a răspuns și a zis: – Ipocriților! Oare în ziua de Sabat nu‑și dezleagă fiecare dintre voi boul sau măgarul de la iesle și‑l duce să‑l adape?! 16 Această femeie, care este o fiică a lui Avraam și pe care, iată, Satan a ținut‑o legată timp de optsprezece ani, nu trebuia oare să fie dezlegată de legătura aceasta în ziua de Sabat? 17 Toți împotrivitorii Lui au rămas de rușine când a zis aceste lucruri. Și întreaga mulțime se bucura de toate lucrurile minunate care se înfăptuiau prin El.

Pilda bobului de muștar și a drojdiei

18 Prin urmare, El a zis: – Cu ce seamănă Împărăția lui Dumnezeu și cu ce o voi asemăna? (Mat 13:31; Mar 4:30) 19 Ea este ca un bob de muștar pe care l‑a luat un om și l‑a aruncat în grădina lui. El a crescut și a devenit un pom, iar păsările cerului și‑au făcut cuiburi între ramurile lui. 20 El a zis iarăși: – Cu ce voi asemăna Împărăția lui Dumnezeu? 21 Este ca drojdia pe care a luat‑o o femeie și a pus‑o^[2] în trei măsuri^[3] de făină, până a dospit tot aluatul.

Intrarea în Împărăție

22 Isus trecea prin cetăți și prin sate, dând învățătură și continuându‑Și călătoria spre Ierusalim. (Mat 7:13; Mat 7:22; Mat 8:11) 23 Cineva L‑a întrebat: – Doamne, numai câțiva vor fi mântuiți? El le‑a zis: 24 – Străduiți‑vă să intrați pe ușa cea îngustă! Căci vă spun că mulți vor încerca să intre, dar nu vor putea. 25 Odată ce Stăpânul casei se va ridica și va încuia ușa, voi, stând afară, veți începe să bateți la ușă și să ziceți: „Doamne, deschide‑ne!“ Dar El, răspunzând, vă va zice: „Nu știu de unde sunteți.“ 26 Atunci veți începe să ziceți: „Noi am mâncat și am băut înaintea Ta, și pe străzile noastre ai dat Tu învățătură!“ 27 Dar El, răspunzând, vă va zice: „Vă spun că nu știu de unde sunteți. Îndepărtați‑vă de la Mine, voi, toți lucrătorii nedreptății!“ 28 Va fi plânsul și scrâșnirea dinților când îi veți vedea pe Avraam, pe Isaac, pe Iacov și pe toți profeții în Împărăția lui Dumnezeu, iar pe voi alungați! 29 Vor veni de la Răsărit și de la Apus, de la Nord și de la Sud și se vor așeza la masă în Împărăția lui Dumnezeu. 30 Și iată că sunt unii dintre cei din urmă care vor fi cei dintâi și sunt unii dintre cei dintâi care vor fi cei din urmă.

Plângere asupra Ierusalimului

31 Chiar în ceasul acela au venit câțiva farisei și I‑au zis: – Pleacă și du‑Te de aici, căci Irod vrea să Te omoare! (Mat 23:37) 32 El le‑a răspuns: – Duceți‑vă și spuneți‑i acelei vulpi: iată, alung demoni și înfăptuiesc vindecări azi și mâine, iar a treia zi voi termina. 33 Trebuie însă ca azi, mâine și poimâine să‑Mi continui drumul, pentru că nu se poate ca un profet să piară afară din Ierusalim. 34 Ierusalime, Ierusalime, care omori profeții și ucizi cu pietre pe cei trimiși la tine! De câte ori am vrut să‑ți adun copiii așa cum își adună cloșca puii sub aripi, dar n‑ați vrut! 35 Iată, casa vă este lăsată pustie! Vă spun că nicidecum nu Mă veți mai vedea până când nu va veni vremea când veți zice: „Binecuvântat este Cel Ce vine în Numele Domnului!“^[4] (Ps 118:26)

Turn away from sin or die

1 Some people who were there at that time told Jesus about certain Galileans. Pilate had mixed their blood with their sacrifices. 2 Jesus said, ‘These people from Galilee suffered greatly. Do you think they were worse sinners than all the other Galileans? 3 I tell you, no! But unless you turn away from your sins, you will all die too. 4 Or what about the 18 people in Siloam? They died when the tower fell on them. Do you think they were more guilty than all the others living in Jerusalem? 5 I tell you, no! But unless you turn away from your sins, you will all die too.’ 6 Then Jesus told a story. ‘A man had a fig tree,’ he said. ‘It was growing in his vineyard. When he went to look for fruit on it, he didn’t find any. 7 So he went to the man who took care of the vineyard. He said, “For three years now I’ve been coming to look for fruit on this fig tree. But I haven’t found any. Cut it down! Why should it use up the soil?” 8 ‘ “Sir”, the man replied, “leave it alone for one more year. I’ll dig around it and feed it. 9 If it bears fruit next year, fine! If not, then cut it down.” ’

Jesus heals a disabled woman on the Sabbath day

10 Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues on a Sabbath day. 11 A woman there had been disabled by an evil spirit for 18 years. She was bent over and could not stand up straight. 12 Jesus saw her. He asked her to come to him. He said to her, ‘Woman, you will no longer be disabled. I am about to set you free.’ 13 Then he put his hands on her. Right away she stood up straight and praised God. 14 Jesus had healed the woman on the Sabbath day. This made the synagogue leader angry. He told the people, ‘There are six days for work. So come and be healed on those days. But do not come on the Sabbath day.’ 15 The Lord answered him, ‘You pretenders! Doesn’t each of you go to the barn and untie your ox or donkey on the Sabbath day? Then don’t you lead it out to give it water? 16 This woman is a member of Abraham’s family line. But Satan has kept her disabled for 18 long years. Shouldn’t she be set free on the Sabbath day from what was keeping her disabled?’ 17 When Jesus said this, all those who opposed him were put to shame. But the people were delighted. They loved all the wonderful things he was doing.

The stories of the mustard seed and the yeast

18 Then Jesus asked, ‘What is God’s kingdom like? What can I compare it to? 19 It is like a mustard seed. Someone took the seed and planted it in a garden. It grew and became a tree. The birds sat in its branches.’ 20 Again he asked, ‘What can I compare God’s kingdom to? 21 It is like yeast that a woman used. She mixed it into 30 kilograms of flour. The yeast worked its way all through the dough.’

The narrow door

22 Then Jesus went through the towns and villages, teaching the people. He was on his way to Jerusalem. 23 Someone asked him, ‘Lord, are only a few people going to be saved?’ He said to them, 24 ‘Try very hard to enter through the narrow door. I tell you, many will try to enter and will not be able to. 25 The owner of the house will get up and close the door. Then you will stand outside knocking and begging. You will say, “Sir, open the door for us.” ‘But he will answer, “I don’t know you. And I don’t know where you come from.” 26 ‘Then you will say, “We ate and drank with you. You taught in our streets.” 27 ‘But he will reply, “I don’t know you. And I don’t know where you come from. Get away from me, all you who do evil!” 28 ‘You will weep and grind your teeth together when you see those who are in God’s kingdom. You will see Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets there. But you yourselves will be thrown out. 29 People will come from east and west and north and south. They will take their places at the feast in God’s kingdom. 30 Then the last will be first. And the first will be last.’

Jesus’ sadness over Jerusalem

31 At that time some Pharisees came to Jesus. They said to him, ‘Leave this place. Go somewhere else. Herod wants to kill you.’ 32 He replied, ‘Go and tell that fox, “I will keep on driving out demons. I will keep on healing people today and tomorrow. And on the third day I will reach my goal.” 33 In any case, I must keep going today and tomorrow and the next day. Certainly no prophet can die outside Jerusalem! 34 ‘Jerusalem! Jerusalem! You kill the prophets and throw stones in order to kill those who are sent to you. Many times I have wanted to gather your people together. I have wanted to be like a hen who gathers her chicks under her wings. And you would not let me. 35 Look, your house is left empty. I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, “Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.” ’ (Ps 118:26)
