Chemarea lui Avram

1 DOMNUL îi zisese lui Avram: „Ieși din țara ta, dintre rudeniile tale și din casa tatălui tău și vino în țara pe care ți‑o voi arăta! 2 Te voi face un neam mare și te voi binecuvânta; voi face numele tău mare, ca tu să fii o binecuvântare! 3 Îi voi binecuvânta pe cei ce te vor binecuvânta, dar îl voi blestema pe cel ce te va blestema! În tine vor fi binecuvântate toate familiile^[1] pământului!“ 4 Avram a plecat, așa cum îi zisese DOMNUL, iar Lot a mers împreună cu el. Avram avea șaptezeci și cinci de ani când a ieșit din Haran. 5 El i‑a luat pe Sarai, soția sa, și pe Lot, fiul fratelui său, împreună cu toate bunurile pe care le‑au adunat și cu robii^[2] pe care i‑au obținut în Haran, și au ieșit ca să plece spre țara Canaan. Și astfel ei au ajuns în țara Canaan. 6 Avram a călătorit prin țară până la locul numit Șehem, până la stejarul lui Moreh. La acea vreme canaaniții erau în țară. 7 DOMNUL i S‑a arătat lui Avram și i‑a zis: „Seminței^[3] tale îi voi da această țară!“ Avram a zidit acolo un altar DOMNULUI Care i Se arătase. (Gal 3:16) 8 De acolo a pornit spre munte, la răsărit de Betel și și‑a întins cortul, având Betelul la apus, iar Ai la răsărit. El a zidit acolo un altar DOMNULUI și a chemat Numele DOMNULUI. 9 Apoi Avram și‑a continuat călătoria, mergând spre Neghev^[4].

Avram în Egipt

10 A venit o foamete în țară și, pentru că foametea era mare, Avram s‑a coborât în Egipt ca să locuiască acolo pentru o vreme. 11 Pe când se apropia să intre în Egipt, Avram i‑a zis soției sale, Sarai: „Iată, știu că ești o femeie frumoasă la înfățișare. 12 Când te vor vedea egiptenii, vor zice: «Aceasta este soția lui.» Și pe mine mă vor ucide, iar pe tine te vor lăsa în viață. 13 Prin urmare, spune, te rog, că ești sora mea, ca să‑mi meargă bine din pricina ta și sufletul meu să trăiască datorită ție.“ 14 Când Avram a intrat în Egipt, egiptenii au văzut că Sarai^[5] era foarte frumoasă. 15 Demnitarii lui Faraon^[6] au văzut‑o și i‑au lăudat‑o lui Faraon. Și astfel femeia a fost luată la palatul^[7] lui Faraon. 16 Faraon i‑a făcut bine lui Avram din pricina ei și i‑a dat oi, vite, măgari, robi, roabe, măgărițe și cămile. 17 Dar DOMNUL a lovit cu mari urgii pe Faraon și familia lui din cauza lui Sarai, soția lui Avram. 18 Atunci Faraon l‑a chemat pe Avram și l‑a întrebat: „Ce mi‑ai făcut? De ce nu mi‑ai spus că este soția ta? 19 De ce ai spus: «Ea este sora mea», iar eu am luat‑o astfel de soție? Iată‑ți aici soția! Ia‑o și du‑te!“ 20 Faraon le‑a dat porunci oamenilor săi cu privire la Avram, iar aceștia l‑au alungat, pe el, soția lui și tot ce avea.

God chooses Abram

1 The LORD had said to Abram, ‘Go from your country, your people and your father’s family. Go to the land I will show you. 2 ‘I will make you into a great nation. And I will bless you. I will make your name great. You will be a blessing to others. 3 I will bless those who bless you. I will put a curse on anyone who puts a curse on you. All nations on earth will be blessed because of you.’ 4 So Abram went, just as the LORD had told him. Lot went with him. Abram was 75 years old when he left Harran. 5 He took his wife Sarai and his nephew Lot. They took all the people and possessions they had acquired in Harran. They started out for the land of Canaan. And they arrived there. 6 Abram travelled through the land. He went as far as the large tree of Moreh at Shechem. At that time the Canaanites were living in the land. 7 The LORD appeared to Abram at Shechem. He said, ‘I will give this land to your family who comes after you.’ So Abram built an altar there to honour the LORD, who had appeared to him. 8 From there, Abram went on towards the hills east of Bethel. He set up his tent there. Bethel was to the west, and Ai was to the east. Abram built an altar there and called on the name of the LORD. 9 Then Abram left and continued south towards the Negev Desert.

Abram goes to Egypt

10 At that time there was not enough food in the land. So Abram went down to Egypt to live there for a while. 11 As he was about to enter Egypt, he spoke to his wife Sarai. He said, ‘I know what a beautiful woman you are. 12 The people of Egypt will see you and say, “This is his wife.” Then they will kill me. But they will let you live. 13 Tell them you are my sister. Then I’ll be treated well and my life will be spared because of you.’ 14 Abram arrived in Egypt. The Egyptians saw that Sarai was a very beautiful woman. 15 When Pharaoh’s officials saw her, they told Pharaoh how beautiful she was. So she was taken into his palace. 16 Pharaoh treated Abram well because of her. So Abram gained more sheep and cattle and male and female donkeys. He also gained more male and female servants and some camels. 17 But the LORD sent terrible diseases on Pharaoh and everyone in his palace. The LORD did it because of Abram’s wife Sarai. 18 So Pharaoh sent for Abram. ‘What have you done to me?’ he said. ‘Why didn’t you tell me she was your wife? 19 Why did you say she was your sister? That’s why I took her to be my wife. Now then, here’s your wife. Take her and go!’ 20 Then Pharaoh gave orders to his men about Abram. They sent him on his way. So he left with his wife and everything he had.
