Ananias și Safira

1 Dar un om pe nume Ananias, a vândut o proprietate împreună cu soția lui, Safira, 2 și a păstrat pentru sine o parte din preț, cu știrea soției lui. Apoi a adus cealaltă parte și a pus‑o la picioarele apostolilor. 3 Petru i‑a zis: „Ananias, de ce ți‑a umplut Satan^[1] inima ca să‑L minți pe Duhul Sfânt, păstrând pentru tine o parte din prețul ogorului? 4 Dacă rămânea nevândut, nu rămânea el al tău? Și, după ce a fost vândut, nu erau banii la dispoziția ta? De ce ai pus la cale acest lucru în inima ta? Nu pe oameni i‑ai mințit, ci pe Dumnezeu!“ 5 Când a auzit Ananias aceste cuvinte, a căzut și și‑a dat suflarea. O mare frică i‑a cuprins pe toți cei ce auziseră aceste lucruri. 6 Cei tineri s‑au ridicat, l‑au învelit, l‑au scos afară și l‑au înmormântat. 7 Cam după trei ore, a intrat și soția lui, fără să știe ce se întâmplase. 8 Petru a întrebat‑o: – Spune‑mi, cu atât ați vândut ogorul? Ea i‑a răspuns: – Da, cu atât. 9 Atunci Petru i‑a zis: – De ce v‑ați înțeles între voi să‑L puneți la încercare pe Duhul Domnului? Iată, picioarele celor ce l‑au înmormântat pe soțul tău sunt la ușă și te vor duce și pe tine! 10 Atunci ea a căzut deodată la picioarele lui și și‑a dat suflarea. Când au intrat tinerii, au găsit‑o moartă; ei au dus‑o afară și au înmormântat‑o lângă soțul ei. 11 O mare frică a cuprins toată biserica^[2] și pe toți cei ce auziseră aceste lucruri.

Prin apostoli se fac semne și minuni

12 Prin mâinile apostolilor se făceau multe semne și minuni în popor. Toți se adunau în același gând în Porticul lui Solomon 13 și niciunul din ceilalți nu îndrăznea să li se alăture, deși poporul îi lăuda foarte mult. 14 Totuși, tot mai mulți din cei ce credeau, – o mulțime de bărbați și femei –, erau adăugați la Domnul. 15 Oamenii îi scoteau chiar și pe străzi pe cei neputincioși și‑i puneau pe tărgi și pe așternuturi, pentru ca, atunci când trecea Petru, măcar umbra lui să cadă peste vreunul dintre ei. 16 Mulțimea se aduna și din cetățile din jurul Ierusalimului, aducându‑i pe cei bolnavi și pe cei chinuiți de duhuri necurate. Și toți erau vindecați.

Apostolii persecutați

17 Însă marele preot și toți cei ce erau împreună cu el, adică partida saducheilor, s‑au ridicat plini de invidie, 18 au pus mâna pe apostoli și i‑au aruncat în închisoarea publică. 19 Dar un înger al Domnului a deschis ușile închisorii în timpul nopții, i‑a condus afară și le‑a zis: 20 „Duceți‑vă, stați în Templu și spuneți poporului toate cuvintele Vieții acesteia!“ 21 Auzind ei aceasta, au intrat în Templu dis‑de‑dimineață și au început să dea învățătură. Când a sosit marele preot și cei ce erau împreună cu el, au convocat Sinedriul, adică tot Sfatul Bătrânilor^[3] fiilor lui Israel, și au trimis după apostoli la închisoare, ca să fie aduși. 22 Gărzile însă, când au sosit acolo, nu i‑au găsit în închisoare, așa că s‑au întors și au anunțat, 23 zicând: „Închisoarea am găsit‑o încuiată cu toată grija, iar pe gardieni i‑am găsit stând la uși, dar când am deschis, n‑am găsit pe nimeni înăuntru!“ 24 Când au auzit cuvintele acestea, atât comandantul gărzii Templului, cât și conducătorii preoților au rămas înmărmuriți din cauza lor și se întrebau ce se întâmplă. 25 Cineva însă a venit și i‑a anunțat: „Iată că bărbații pe care i‑ați aruncat în închisoare stau în Templu și dau învățătură poporului!“ 26 Atunci comandantul s‑a dus împreună cu gărzile și i‑a adus, însă nu cu forța, pentru că se temeau să nu fie loviți cu pietre de popor. 27 I‑au adus și i‑au pus să stea înaintea Sinedriului. Marele preot i‑a întrebat, 28 zicând: – Nu^[4] v‑am poruncit răspicat să nu mai dați învățătură în Numele acesta? Dar iată că voi ați umplut Ierusalimul cu învățătura voastră și vreți să aruncați peste noi vina pentru sângele Acestui Om! 29 Dar Petru și ceilalți apostoli, răspunzând, au zis: – Trebuie să ascultăm mai mult de Dumnezeu decât de oameni! 30 Dumnezeul strămoșilor^[5] noștri L‑a înviat pe Isus, pe Care voi L‑ați ucis, pironindu‑L pe lemn. 31 Pe El, Dumnezeu L‑a înălțat la dreapta Sa, ca Prinț^[6] și Mântuitor, ca să dea lui Israel pocăință și iertare de păcate. (Fapte 3:15) 32 Iar noi suntem martori ai acestor lucruri și, de asemenea, și Duhul Sfânt pe Care L‑a dat Dumnezeu celor ce ascultă de El. 33 Când au auzit ei acestea, s‑au înfuriat și au vrut să‑i omoare. 34 Dar un fariseu^[7] pe nume Gamaliel^[8], un învățător al Legii respectat de tot poporul, s‑a ridicat în Sinedriu și a poruncit ca oamenii să fie scoși afară puțin. 35 Apoi le‑a zis: „Bărbați israeliți, aveți grijă ce urmează să le faceți acestor oameni! 36 Căci, nu demult, s‑a ridicat Teudas, care spunea despre sine că este cineva și căruia i s‑au alăturat aproape patru sute de bărbați. El a fost omorât, iar toți aceia care se încrezuseră în el au fost împrăștiați și nu s‑a ales nimic de ei. 37 După el, pe vremea recensământului^[9], s‑a ridicat Iuda, galileeanul, și a atras poporul după el. Dar și el a pierit, iar toți aceia care se încrezuseră în el au fost împrăștiați. (Lu 2:2) 38 Iar acum, eu vă spun: depărtați‑vă de oamenii aceștia și lăsați‑i! Dacă planul sau lucrarea aceasta este de la oameni, va fi distrusă, 39 dar, dacă este de la Dumnezeu, nu‑i veți putea distruge pe acești oameni! Să nu vă treziți că luptați împotriva lui Dumnezeu!“ Astfel, ei au fost convinși de el. 40 Apoi i‑au chemat pe apostoli, i‑au biciuit, le‑au poruncit să nu mai vorbească în Numele lui Isus și le‑au dat drumul. 41 Prin urmare, apostolii au plecat dinaintea Sinedriului, bucurându‑se că au fost considerați vrednici să fie umiliți pentru Numele Lui. 42 Și, în fiecare zi, în Templu și prin case, nu încetau să dea învățătură și să ducă vestea bună^[10] că Isus este Cristosul.

Ananias and Sapphira

1 A man named Ananias and his wife, Sapphira, also sold some land. 2 He kept part of the money for himself. Sapphira knew he had kept it. He brought the rest of it and put it down at the apostles’ feet. 3 Then Peter said, ‘Ananias, why did you let Satan fill your heart? He made you lie to the Holy Spirit. You have kept some of the money you received for the land. 4 Didn’t the land belong to you before it was sold? After it was sold, you could have used the money as you wished. What made you think of doing such a thing? You haven’t lied just to people. You’ve also lied to God.’ 5 When Ananias heard this, he fell down and died. All who heard what had happened were filled with fear. 6 Some young men came and wrapped up his body. They carried him out and buried him. 7 About three hours later, the wife of Ananias came in. She didn’t know what had happened. 8 Peter asked her, ‘Tell me. Is this the price you and Ananias sold the land for?’ ‘Yes’, she said. ‘That’s the price.’ 9 Peter asked her, ‘How could you agree to test the Spirit of the Lord? Listen! You can hear the steps of the men who buried your husband. They are at the door. They will carry you out also.’ 10 At that moment she fell down at Peter’s feet and died. Then the young men came in. They saw that Sapphira was dead. So they carried her out and buried her beside her husband. 11 The whole church and all who heard about these things were filled with fear.

The apostles heal many people

12 The apostles did many signs and wonders among the people. All the believers used to meet together at Solomon’s Porch. 13 No outsider dared to join them. But the people thought highly of them. 14 More and more men and women believed in the Lord. They joined the other believers. 15 So people brought those who were ill into the streets. They placed them on beds and mats. They hoped that at least Peter’s shadow might fall on some of them as he walked by. 16 Crowds even gathered from the towns around Jerusalem. They brought their ill people. They also brought those who were suffering because of evil spirits. All of them were healed.

The apostles are treated badly

17 The high priest and all his companions were Sadducees. They were very jealous of the apostles. 18 So they arrested them and put them in the public jail. 19 But during the night an angel of the Lord came. He opened the doors of the jail and brought the apostles out. 20 ‘Go! Stand in the temple courtyard,’ the angel said. ‘Tell the people all about this new life.’ 21 Early the next day they did as they had been told. They entered the temple courtyard. There they began to teach the people. The high priest and his companions arrived. They called the Sanhedrin together. The Sanhedrin was a gathering of all the elders of Israel. They sent for the apostles who were in jail. 22 The officers arrived at the jail. But they didn’t find the apostles there. So they went back and reported it. 23 ‘We found the jail locked up tight,’ they said. ‘The guards were standing at the doors. But when we opened the doors, we didn’t find anyone inside.’ 24 When the captain of the temple guard and the chief priests heard this report, they were bewildered. They wondered what would happen next. 25 Then someone came and said, ‘Look! The men you put in jail are standing in the temple courtyard. They are teaching the people.’ 26 So the captain went with his officers and brought the apostles back. But they didn’t use force. They were afraid the people would kill them by throwing stones at them. 27 They brought the apostles to the Sanhedrin. The high priest questioned them. 28 ‘We gave you clear orders not to teach in Jesus’ name,’ he said. ‘But you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching. You want to make us guilty of this man’s death.’ 29 Peter and the other apostles replied, ‘We must obey God instead of people! 30 You had Jesus killed by nailing him to a cross. But the God of our people raised Jesus from the dead. 31 Now Jesus is Prince and Saviour. God has proved this by giving Jesus a place of honour with him. He did it to turn Israel away from their sins and forgive them. 32 We are telling people about these things. And so is the Holy Spirit. God has given the Spirit to those who obey him.’ 33 When the leaders heard this, they became very angry. They wanted to put the apostles to death. 34 But a Pharisee named Gamaliel stood up in the Sanhedrin. He was a teacher of the law. He was honoured by all the people. He ordered the apostles to be taken outside for a little while. 35 Then Gamaliel spoke to the Sanhedrin. ‘Men of Israel,’ he said, ‘think carefully about what you plan to do to these men. 36 Some time ago Theudas appeared. He claimed he was really somebody. About 400 people followed him. But he was killed. All his followers were scattered. So they accomplished nothing. 37 After this, Judas from Galilee came along. This was in the days when the Romans made a list of all the people. Judas led a gang of men against the Romans. He too was killed. All his followers were scattered. 38 So let me give you some advice. Leave these men alone! Let them go! If their plans and actions only come from people, they will fail. 39 But if their plans come from God, you won’t be able to stop these men. You will only find yourselves fighting against God.’ 40 His speech won the leaders over. They called the apostles in and had them whipped. The leaders ordered them not to speak in Jesus’ name. Then they let the apostles go. 41 The apostles were full of joy as they left the Sanhedrin. They considered it an honour to suffer shame for the name of Jesus. 42 Every day they taught in the temple courtyards and from house to house. They never stopped telling people the good news that Jesus is the Messiah.
