Pavel în Malta

1 După ce am fost salvați din primejdie, am aflat că insula se numea Malta. 2 Barbarii^[1] ne‑au arătat o bunăvoință neobișnuită, căci au aprins un foc și ne‑au primit bine pe toți, din cauză că începuse ploaia și din cauza frigului. 3 Pavel a adunat o grămadă de vreascuri și, în timp ce le punea pe foc, a ieșit o viperă din cauza căldurii și i s‑a prins de mână. 4 Când barbarii au văzut șarpele atârnând de mâna lui, și‑au zis unii altora: „Fără îndoială că omul acesta care a fost salvat din mare este un ucigaș, căci Dreptatea^[2] nu‑l lasă să trăiască!“ 5 Pavel însă a scuturat șarpele în foc, fără să sufere niciun rău. 6 Ei se așteptau să se umfle sau să cadă deodată mort. Dar, după ce au așteptat mult și au văzut că nu i se întâmplă nimic neobișnuit, și‑au schimbat părerea și au zis că este un zeu. 7 Aproape de locul acela se aflau niște pământuri ale fruntașului^[3] insulei, al cărui nume era Publius. El ne‑a primit și ne‑a găzduit cu ospitalitate timp de trei zile. 8 Tatăl lui Publius zăcea atunci în pat, suferind de friguri și dizenterie. Pavel s‑a dus la el, s‑a rugat punându‑și mâinile peste el și l‑a vindecat. 9 După ce s‑a întâmplat aceasta, ceilalți de pe insulă care aveau boli, au venit și ei și au fost vindecați. 10 Ei ne‑au cinstit în multe feluri, iar când am fost gata de plecare ne‑au pus la dispoziție lucrurile de care aveam nevoie.

Pavel sosește în Roma

11 După trei luni, am plecat pe mare cu o corabie din Alexandria care iernase pe insulă și care avea emblema Dioscurilor^[4]. 12 Am debarcat în Siracuza, unde am rămas timp de trei zile, 13 iar de acolo am plecat mai departe și am sosit în Regium. După o zi a început să bată un vânt dinspre sud, iar în ziua următoare am ajuns în Puteoli, 14 unde am găsit frați și am fost rugați să rămânem cu ei șapte zile. Și așa am ajuns în Roma. 15 Când frații de acolo au auzit despre noi, au venit în întâmpinarea noastră până la Forumul lui Apius și până la „Trei taverne“. Văzându‑i, Pavel I‑a mulțumit lui Dumnezeu și a fost încurajat. 16 Când am intrat în Roma, centurionul i‑a predat pe prizonieri căpitanului gărzilor, iar lui Pavel i s‑a dat voie să locuiască singur, sub paza unui soldat.

17 După trei zile, Pavel i‑a chemat la el pe fruntașii iudeilor, iar când aceștia s‑au adunat, le‑a zis: – Bărbați, fraților, deși n‑am făcut nimic împotriva poporului nostru sau împotriva obiceiurilor părinților noștri, totuși am fost luat prizonier în Ierusalim și dat în mâinile romanilor. 18 Aceștia, după ce m‑au cercetat, voiau să mă elibereze, fiindcă nu era în mine niciun motiv de condamnare la moarte. 19 Dar, pentru că iudeii s‑au împotrivit, am fost constrâns să fac apel la Cezar, deși nu aveam de adus nicio acuzație împotriva neamului meu. 20 Din acest motiv v‑am chemat să vă văd și să vă vorbesc. Au venit mulți în locul unde era găzduit, iar el, de dimineață până seara, le‑a explicat lucrurile, depunând mărturie despre Împărăția lui Dumnezeu și încercând să‑i convingă cu privire la Isus, atât din Legea lui Moise, cât și din Profeți. 24 Unii erau convinși de cele spuse de el, dar alții erau necredincioși. 25 Fiindcă începuseră să plece acasă în dezacord unii cu alții, Pavel le‑a mai zis doar cuvintele acestea: „Bine a vorbit Duhul Sfânt strămoșilor^[5] voștri prin profetul Isaia, 26 când a zis: «Du‑te la poporul acesta și spune: Veți auzi cu auzul,^[6] dar nicidecum nu veți înțelege, și veți privi cu privirea,^[7] dar nicidecum nu veți pricepe. 27 Căci inima acestui popor s‑a împietrit. Urechile lor aud greu, iar ochii li s‑au închis, ca nu cumva să vadă cu ochii, să audă cu urechile, să înțeleagă cu inima, să se întoarcă și să‑i vindec!»^[8] (Is 6:9) 28 Să știți deci că mântuirea aceasta dată de Dumnezeu a fost trimisă neamurilor, și ele o vor asculta!“ 29 Când Pavel a rostit aceste cuvinte, iudeii au plecat, având o mare dispută între ei. 30 Pavel a rămas acolo doi ani întregi, într‑un loc pe care și‑l închiriase. Și‑i primea pe toți cei ce veneau la el, 31 proclamând Împărăția lui Dumnezeu și dând învățătură despre Domnul Isus Cristos, cu toată îndrăzneala și fără nicio piedică.

On shore at Malta

1 When we were safe on shore, we found out that the island was called Malta. 2 The people of the island were unusually kind. It was raining and cold. So they built a fire and welcomed all of us. 3 Paul gathered some sticks and put them on the fire. A poisonous snake was driven out by the heat. It fastened itself on Paul’s hand. 4 The people of the island saw the snake hanging from his hand. They said to one another, ‘This man must be a murderer. He escaped from the sea. But the goddess Justice won’t let him live.’ 5 Paul shook the snake off into the fire. He was not harmed. 6 The people expected him to swell up. They thought he would suddenly fall dead. They waited for a long time. But they didn’t see anything unusual happen to him. So they changed their minds. They said he was a god. 7 Publius owned property nearby. He was the chief official on the island. He welcomed us to his home. For three days he took care of us. He treated us with kindness. 8 His father was ill in bed. The man suffered from fever and dysentery. So Paul went in to see him. Paul prayed for him. He placed his hands on him and healed him. 9 Then the rest of the ill people on the island came. They too were healed. 10 The people of the island honoured us in many ways. When we were ready to sail, they gave us the supplies we needed.

Paul arrives in Rome

11 After three months we headed out to sea. We sailed in a ship from Alexandria that had stayed at the island during the winter. On the front of the ship the figures of twin gods were carved. Their names were Castor and Pollux. 12 We landed at Syracuse and stayed there for three days. 13 From there we sailed to Rhegium. The next day the south wind came up. The day after that, we reached Puteoli. 14 There we found some believers. They invited us to spend a week with them. At last we came to Rome. 15 The believers there had heard we were coming. They travelled as far as the Forum of Appius and the Three Taverns to meet us. When Paul saw these people, he thanked God for them and was encouraged by them. 16 When we got to Rome, Paul was allowed to live by himself. But a soldier guarded him.

Paul preaches in Rome

17 Three days later Paul called a meeting of the local Jewish leaders. When they came, Paul spoke to them. He said, ‘My brothers, I have done nothing against our people. I have also done nothing against what our people of long ago practised. But I was arrested in Jerusalem. I was handed over to the Romans. 18 They questioned me. And they wanted to let me go. They saw I wasn’t guilty of any crime worthy of death. 19 But the Jews objected, so I had to make an appeal to Caesar. I certainly did not mean to bring any charge against my own people. 20 I share Israel’s hope. That is why I am held with this chain. So I have asked to see you and talk with you.’ 21 They replied, ‘We have not received any letters from Judea about you. None of our people here from Judea has reported or said anything bad about you. 22 But we want to hear what your ideas are. We know that people everywhere are talking against those who believe as you do.’ 23 They decided to meet Paul on a certain day. At that time even more people came to the place where he was staying. From morning until evening, he told them about God’s kingdom. Using the Law of Moses and the Prophets, he tried to get them to believe in Jesus. 24 Some believed what he said, and others did not. 25 They didn’t agree with one another. They began to leave after Paul had made a final statement. He said, ‘The Holy Spirit was right when he spoke to your people long ago. Through Isaiah the prophet the Spirit said, 26 ‘ “Go to your people. Say to them, ‘You will hear but never understand. You will see but never know what you are seeing.’ 27 These people’s hearts have become stubborn. They can barely hear with their ears. They have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes. They might hear with their ears. They might understand with their hearts. They might turn, and then I would heal them.” (Is 6:9; Is 6:10) 28-29 ‘Here is what I want you to know. God has sent his salvation to the Gentiles. And they will listen!’ 30 For two whole years Paul stayed there in a house he rented. He welcomed all who came to see him. 31 He preached boldly about God’s kingdom. He taught people about the Lord Jesus Christ. And no one could keep him from teaching and preaching about these things.
