1 Pavel, chemat prin voia lui Dumnezeu să fie apostol al lui Cristos Isus, și fratele Sostenes, 2 către biserica lui Dumnezeu care este în Corint, către cei ce au fost sfințiți în Cristos Isus, chemați să fie sfinți împreună cu toți cei ce cheamă în orice loc Numele Domnului nostru Isus Cristos, Domnul lor și al nostru: 3 har și pace de la Dumnezeu, Tatăl nostru, și de la Domnul Isus Cristos!

Mulțumire

4 Îi mulțumesc întotdeauna Dumnezeului meu pentru voi, datorită harului lui Dumnezeu care v‑a fost dat în Cristos Isus. 5 Căci în El ați fost îmbogățiți în orice fel, – în toată vorbirea și în toată cunoașterea –, 6 mărturia despre Cristos fiind astfel confirmată în mijlocul vostru. 7 Astfel, nu sunteți lipsiți de niciun dar în timp ce așteptați descoperirea Domnului nostru Isus Cristos, 8 Care vă va și întări până la sfârșit, astfel încât să fiți fără vină în ziua Domnului nostru Isus Cristos. 9 Credincios este Dumnezeu, prin Care ați fost chemați la părtășia cu Fiul Său, Isus Cristos, Domnul nostru.

Dezbinări în biserică

10 Vă îndemn, fraților, prin Numele Domnului nostru Isus Cristos, să aveți toți același fel de vorbire^[1] și să nu fie dezbinări între voi, ci să fiți pe deplin uniți în gândire și în pricepere.^[2] 11 Căci, frații mei, mi s‑a dat de știre, de către cei ai Cloei, că între voi sunt certuri. 12 Ceea ce vreau să spun este că fiecare dintre voi zice: „Eu sunt al lui Pavel!“ sau „Eu sunt al lui Apollos!“ sau „Eu sunt al lui Chifa^[3]!“ sau „Eu sunt al lui Cristos!“ 13 A fost Cristos împărțit? A fost Pavel răstignit pentru voi? Sau în numele lui Pavel ați fost voi botezați? 14 Îi mulțumesc lui Dumnezeu că n‑am botezat pe niciunul dintre voi, în afară de Crispos și Gaius, 15 pentru ca nimeni să nu poată spune că ați fost botezați în numele meu. 16 Da, i‑am botezat și pe cei din familia lui Stefanas, dar în afară de aceștia nu știu să mai fi botezat pe altcineva. 17 Căci Cristos nu m‑a trimis să botez, ci să vestesc Evanghelia^[4], nu cu înțelepciunea vorbirii, ca nu cumva crucea lui Cristos să fie golită de puterea ei.

Cristos, înțelepciunea și puterea lui Dumnezeu

18 Căci mesajul crucii este o nebunie pentru cei care pier, însă pentru noi, cei care suntem mântuiți, este puterea lui Dumnezeu. 19 Fiindcă este scris: „Voi distruge înțelepciunea celor înțelepți și voi înlătura priceperea celor pricepuți.“^[5] (Is 29:14) 20 Unde este înțeleptul? Unde este cărturarul^[6]? Unde este polemistul acestui veac? N‑a făcut Dumnezeu nebună înțelepciunea lumii? 21 Căci, de vreme ce, în înțelepciunea lui Dumnezeu, lumea nu L‑a cunoscut pe Dumnezeu prin înțelepciune, Dumnezeu a găsit potrivit ca, prin nebunia proclamării Evangheliei, să‑i mântuiască pe cei care cred. 22 Iudeii cer într-adevăr semne, iar grecii caută înțelepciune, 23 însă noi Îl predicăm pe Cristos cel răstignit, Care este o piatră de poticnire^[7] pentru iudei și o nebunie pentru neamuri. 24 Dar pentru cei chemați, atât iudei, cât și greci, Cristos este puterea lui Dumnezeu și înțelepciunea lui Dumnezeu. 25 Căci nebunia lui Dumnezeu este mai înțeleaptă decât oamenii și slăbiciunea lui Dumnezeu este mai puternică decât oamenii. 26 Fraților, uitați‑vă la chemarea voastră: printre voi nu sunt mulți înțelepți în felul oamenilor, nici mulți puternici, nici mulți de viță nobilă. 27 Dar Dumnezeu a ales lucrurile nebunești ale lumii, ca să‑i facă de rușine pe cei înțelepți. Și Dumnezeu a ales lucrurile slabe ale lumii, ca să le facă de rușine pe cele tari. 28 Dumnezeu a ales lucrurile de jos ale lumii și lucrurile disprețuite, ba chiar lucrurile care nu sunt, ca să desființeze lucrurile care sunt, 29 pentru ca niciun om să nu se laude înaintea lui Dumnezeu. 30 Iar voi, datorită Lui, sunteți în Cristos Isus, Care a devenit pentru noi înțelepciune de la Dumnezeu, dreptate, sfințire și răscumpărare, 31 pentru ca, așa cum este scris, „Cel ce se laudă să se laude în Domnul.“^[8] (Ier 9:24)

1 I, Paul, am writing this letter. I have been chosen to be an apostle of Christ Jesus just as God planned. Our brother Sosthenes joins me in writing. 2 We are sending this letter to you, the members of God’s church in Corinth. You have been made holy because you belong to Christ Jesus. God has chosen you to be his holy people. He has done the same for all people everywhere who pray to our Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus is their Lord and ours. 3 May God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ give you grace and peace.

Paul gives thanks

4 I always thank my God for you. I thank him because of the grace he has given to you who belong to Christ Jesus. 5 You have been blessed in every way because of him. You have been blessed in all your speech and knowledge. 6 God has shown that what we have spoken to you about Christ is true. 7 There is no gift of the Holy Spirit that you don’t have. You are full of hope as you wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to come again. 8 God will also keep you strong in faith to the very end. Then you will be without blame on the day our Lord Jesus Christ returns. 9 God is faithful. He has chosen you to share life with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

Taking sides in the church

10 Brothers and sisters, I make my appeal to you. I do this in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. I ask that all of you agree with one another in what you say. I ask that you don’t take sides. I ask that you are in complete agreement in all that you think. 11 My brothers and sisters, I have been told you are arguing with one another. Some people from Chloe’s house have told me this. 12 Here is what I mean. One of you says, ‘I follow Paul.’ Another says, ‘I follow Apollos.’ Another says, ‘I follow Peter.’ And still another says, ‘I follow Christ.’ 13 Does Christ take sides? Did Paul die on the cross for you? Were you baptised in the name of Paul? 14 I thank God that I didn’t baptise any of you except Crispus and Gaius. 15 No one can say that you were baptised in my name. 16 It’s true that I also baptised those who live in the house of Stephanas. Besides that, I don’t remember if I baptised anyone else. 17 Christ did not send me to baptise. He sent me to preach the good news. He commanded me not to preach with wisdom and fancy words. That would take all the power away from the cross of Christ.

Christ is God’s power and wisdom

18 The message of the cross seems foolish to those who are lost and dying. But it is God’s power to us who are being saved. 19 It is written, ‘I will destroy the wisdom of those who are wise. I will do away with the cleverness of those who think they are so smart.’ (Is 29:14) 20 Where is the wise person? Where is the teacher of the law? Where are the great thinkers of our time? Hasn’t God made the wisdom of the world foolish? 21 God wisely planned that the world would not know him through its own wisdom. It pleased God to use the foolish things we preach to save those who believe. 22 Jews require signs. Greeks look for wisdom. 23 But we preach about Christ and his death on the cross. That is very hard for Jews to accept. And everyone else thinks it’s foolish. 24 But there are those God has chosen, both Jews and Greeks. To them Christ is God’s power and God’s wisdom. 25 The foolish things of God are wiser than human wisdom. The weakness of God is stronger than human strength. 26 Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when God chose you. Not many of you were considered wise by human standards. Not many of you were powerful. Not many of you belonged to important families. 27 But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise. God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. 28 God chose the things of this world that are common and looked down on. God chose things considered unimportant to do away with things considered important. 29 So no one can boast to God. 30 Because of what God has done, you belong to Christ Jesus. He has become God’s wisdom for us. He makes us right with God. He makes us holy and sets us free. 31 It is written, ‘The one who boasts should boast about what the Lord has done.’ (Ier 9:24)
