1 Solomon s‑a înrudit cu Faraon, regele Egiptului. El a luat‑o de soție pe fiica acestuia și a adus‑o în Cetatea lui David până când a terminat de zidit palatul, Casa DOMNULUI și zidul din jurul Ierusalimului.

Vedenia de la Ghivon: Solomon primește înțelepciune

2 Poporul încă mai aducea jertfe pe înălțimi, căci încă nu fusese zidită o Casă pentru Numele DOMNULUI. (2 Cro 1:1) 3 Solomon Îl iubea pe DOMNUL, împlinind hotărârile tatălui său, David, însă aducea jertfe și ardea tămâie pe înălțimi. 4 Regele s‑a dus la Ghivon ca să aducă jertfe acolo, căci era cea mai importantă înălțime. El a adus pe altarul de acolo o mie de arderi‑de‑tot. 5 La Ghivon, DOMNUL i S‑a arătat lui Solomon noaptea într‑un vis și Dumnezeu i‑a zis: – Cere ce vrei să‑ți dau! 6 Solomon a răspuns: – Tu ai arătat o mare îndurare^[1] față de robul Tău David, tatăl meu, căci a umblat înaintea Ta în credincioșie, în dreptate și în curăție de inimă. Tu ai păstrat această mare îndurare față de el și i‑ai dat un fiu care stă astăzi pe tronul său. 7 DOAMNE, Dumnezeul meu, Tu l‑ai făcut rege pe robul Tău în locul tatălui meu, David. Însă eu sunt tânăr și nu știu să conduc.^[2] 8 Robul Tău se află în mijlocul poporului pe care l‑ai ales, un popor atât de numeros, încât nu poate fi calculat sau numărat. 9 Dă‑i robului Tău o inimă care ascultă, ca să judec poporul Tău și să pot deosebi între bine și rău. Căci cine este în stare să judece acest popor numeros al Tău? 10 Stăpânului I‑a plăcut lucrul pe care l‑a cerut Solomon.^[3] 11 Dumnezeu i‑a zis: – Pentru că ai cerut acest lucru și nu ai cerut pentru tine nici viață lungă, nici bogății și nici moartea dușmanilor tăi, ci ai cerut pricepere, ca să asculți la judecată, 12 iată, voi face după cum ai cerut. Îți voi da o inimă înțeleaptă și pricepută cum n‑a avut nimeni înaintea ta și nici nu se va mai ridica după tine nimeni asemenea ție. 13 Mai mult, îți voi da și ceea ce nu ai cerut: atât bogății, cât și glorie, așa încât nu va fi niciun alt rege ca tine în toate zilele tale. 14 Și, dacă vei umbla pe căile Mele, păzind hotărârile și poruncile Mele, așa cum a făcut tatăl tău, David, îți voi lungi zilele. 15 Solomon s‑a trezit și iată că fusese un vis. El s‑a întors la Ierusalim, s‑a înfățișat înaintea Chivotului Legământului cu Stăpânul și a adus arderi‑de‑tot și jertfe de pace^[4]. Apoi a dat un ospăț pentru toți slujitorii săi.

Înțelepciunea lui Solomon

16 Atunci au venit înaintea regelui două prostituate. 17 Prima femeie a zis: – Ah, stăpânul meu, eu și femeia aceasta locuim în aceeași casă. Eu am născut lângă ea în casă, 18 iar la trei zile după ce am născut eu, a născut și femeia aceasta. Eram împreună; nu mai era nimeni cu noi în casă; eram doar noi două în casă. 19 În timpul nopții, fiul acestei femei a murit, din cauză că se culcase peste el. 20 Ea s‑a sculat în miezul nopții, l‑a luat pe fiul meu de lângă mine, în timp ce slujitoarea ta dormea, și l‑a așezat la sânul ei; iar pe fiul ei mort l‑a așezat la sânul meu. 21 Când m‑am trezit dimineața ca să‑mi alăptez fiul, iată că el era mort. M‑am uitat la el cu atenție dimineața, și iată că nu era fiul meu, pe care‑l născusem. 22 Cealaltă femeie a zis: – Ba nu! Fiul meu este cel viu, iar fiul tău este cel mort! Dar aceasta a răspuns: – Ba nu! Fiul tău este cel mort, iar fiul meu este cel viu! Așa au vorbit ele înaintea regelui. 23 Atunci regele a zis: – Aceasta zice: „Fiul meu este cel viu, iar fiul tău este cel mort!“, iar cealaltă zice: „Ba nu! Fiul tău este cel mort, iar fiul meu este cel viu!“ 24 Apoi regele a zis: „Aduceți‑mi o sabie!“ Ei au adus o sabie înaintea regelui. 25 Regele a zis: „Tăiați copilul cel viu în două și dați‑i o jumătate uneia și o jumătate celeilalte!“ 26 Atunci femeia al cărei fiu era cel viu i‑a vorbit regelui, căci a cuprins‑o mila pentru fiul ei, și a zis: – Te rog, stăpânul meu, dă‑i ei nou‑născutul viu și să nu cumva să‑l omori! Cealaltă însă zicea: – Să nu fie nici al meu, nici al tău! Tăiați‑l în două! 27 Regele a răspuns și a zis: – Dați primei femei nou‑născutul cel viu și să nu cumva să‑l omorâți! Ea este mama lui. 28 Tot Israelul a auzit judecata pronunțată de rege. Ei s‑au temut de el, căci au văzut că înțelepciunea lui Dumnezeu era în lăuntrul lui, ca să facă dreptate.

Solomon asks God for wisdom

1 Solomon and Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, agreed to help each other. So Solomon married Pharaoh’s daughter. He brought her to the City of David. She stayed there until he finished building his palace, the LORD’s temple, and the wall around Jerusalem. 2 But the people continued to offer sacrifices at the high places where they worshipped. That’s because a temple hadn’t been built yet where the LORD would put his Name. 3 Solomon showed his love for the LORD. He did it by obeying the laws his father David had taught him. But Solomon offered sacrifices at the high places. He also burned incense there. 4 King Solomon went to the city of Gibeon to offer sacrifices. That’s where the most important high place was. There he offered 1,000 burnt offerings on the altar. 5 The LORD appeared to Solomon at Gibeon. He spoke to him in a dream during the night. God said, ‘Ask for anything you want me to give you.’ 6 Solomon answered, ‘You have been very kind to my father David, your servant. That’s because he was faithful to you. He did what was right. His heart was honest. And you have continued to be very kind to him. You have given him a son to sit on his throne this day. 7 ‘LORD my God, you have now made me king. You have put me in the place of my father David. But I’m only a little child. I don’t know how to carry out my duties. 8 I’m here among the people you have chosen. They are a great nation. They are more than anyone can count. 9 So give me a heart that understands. Then I can rule over your people. I can tell the difference between what is right and what is wrong. Who can possibly rule over this great nation of yours?’ 10 The Lord was pleased that Solomon had asked for that. 11 So God said to him, ‘You have not asked to live for a long time. You have not asked to be wealthy. You have not even asked to have your enemies killed. Instead, you have asked for wisdom. You want to do what is right and fair when you judge people. Because that is what you have asked for, 12 I will give it to you. I will give you a wise and understanding heart. So here is what will be true of you. There has never been anyone like you. And there never will be. 13 And that is not all. I will give you what you have not asked for. I will give you wealth and honour. As long as you live, no other king will be as great as you are. 14 Live the way I want you to. Obey my laws and commands, just as your father David did. Then I will let you live for a long time.’ 15 Solomon woke up. He realised he had been dreaming. He returned to Jerusalem. He stood in front of the ark of the Lord’s covenant. He sacrificed burnt offerings and friendship offerings. Then he gave a feast for all his officials.

A wise ruling

16 Two prostitutes came to the king. They stood in front of him. 17 One of them said, ‘Pardon me, my master, this woman and I live in the same house. I had a baby while she was there with me. 18 Three days after my child was born, this woman also had a baby. We were alone. There wasn’t anyone in the house but the two of us. 19 ‘During the night this woman’s baby died. It happened because she was lying on top of him. 20 So she got up in the middle of the night. She took my son from my side while I was asleep. She put him by her breast. Then she put her dead son by my breast. 21 The next morning, I got up to feed my son. But he was dead! I looked at him closely in the morning light. And I saw that it wasn’t my baby.’ 22 The other woman said, ‘No! The living baby is my son. The dead one belongs to you.’ But the first woman said, ‘No! The dead baby is yours. The living one belongs to me.’ So they argued in front of the king. 23 The king said, ‘One of you says, “My son is alive. Your son is dead.” The other one says, “No! Your son is dead. Mine is alive.” ’ 24 He continued, ‘Bring me a sword.’ So a sword was brought to him. 25 Then he gave an order. He said, ‘Cut the living child in two. Give half to one woman and half to the other.’ 26 The woman whose son was alive was filled with deep love for her son. She said to the king, ‘My master, please give her the living baby! Don’t kill him!’ But the other woman said, ‘Neither one of us will have him. Cut him in two!’ 27 Then the king made his decision. He said, ‘Give the living baby to the first woman. Don’t kill him. She’s his mother.’ 28 All the Israelites heard about the decision the king had given. That gave them great respect for him. They saw that God had given him wisdom. They knew that Solomon would do what was right and fair when he judged people.
