Profetul Ilie este îmbărbătat să‑și continue lucrarea

1 Ahab i‑a istorisit Izabelei tot ceea ce făcuse Ilie și cum îi omorâse pe toți profeții cu sabia. 2 Izabela a trimis un mesager la Ilie ca să‑i spună: „Dumnezeii să se poarte cu mine cu toată asprimea^[1] dacă mâine la această oră nu voi face cu viața ta ce ai făcut tu cu viața fiecăruia dintre ei!“ 3 Când a auzit acest lucru, Ilie s‑a ridicat și a fugit ca să‑și scape viața. A ajuns la Beer-Șeba, care aparține de Iuda și și‑a lăsat slujitorul acolo, 4 iar el s‑a dus cale de o zi în pustie. A ajuns la un verigel, s‑a așezat sub el și s‑a rugat să moară, zicând: „Destul, DOAMNE! Ia‑mi viața acum, căci nu sunt mai bun decât părinții mei.“ 5 Apoi, s‑a întins sub verigel și a adormit. Dar iată că un înger l‑a trezit și i‑a zis: „Ridică‑te și mănâncă!“ 6 Uitându‑se, a văzut la capul său o turtă coaptă pe niște pietre încălzite și un urcior cu apă. După ce a mâncat și a băut, s‑a culcat din nou. 7 Îngerul DOMNULUI a venit a doua oară, l‑a trezit și i‑a zis: „Ridică‑te și mănâncă, întrucât călătoria pe care o ai de făcut este prea lungă pentru tine!“ 8 El s‑a ridicat, a mâncat și a băut. Apoi, cu puterea pe care i‑a dat‑o această mâncare, a mers timp de patruzeci de zile și patruzeci de nopți până la Horeb, muntele lui Dumnezeu.

Domnul i Se arată lui Ilie

9 Acolo, a intrat într‑o peșteră și a înnoptat în ea. Și iată că Cuvântul DOMNULUI a venit la el și i‑a zis: – Ce faci tu aici, Ilie? 10 El a răspuns: – Am fost plin de râvnă pentru DOMNUL, Dumnezeul Oștirilor, fiindcă fiii lui Israel au încălcat legământul Tău, Ți‑au dărâmat altarele și Ți‑au omorât profeții cu sabia. Numai eu singur am mai rămas, iar ei încearcă să‑mi ia viața. 11 El i‑a spus: – Ieși și stai pe munte înaintea DOMNULUI! Iată că DOMNUL va trece pe acolo. Înaintea DOMNULUI a venit un vânt mare și puternic, care despica munții și sfărâma stâncile, dar DOMNUL nu era în acest vânt. După acest vânt, a fost un cutremur de pământ, dar DOMNUL nu era în acest cutremur. 12 După acest cutremur, a venit un foc, dar DOMNUL nu era în acest foc. Dar după acest foc, s‑a auzit o voce blândă, suavă. 13 Când a auzit‑o, Ilie și‑a acoperit fața cu mantaua, a ieșit și a stat la intrarea peșterii. Și iată că o voce i‑a vorbit și a zis: – Ce faci tu aici, Ilie? 14 El a răspuns: – Am fost plin de râvnă pentru DOMNUL, Dumnezeul Oștirilor, fiindcă fiii lui Israel au încălcat legământul Tău, Ți‑au dărâmat altarele și Ți‑au omorât profeții cu sabia. Când vei ajunge acolo, să‑l ungi pe Hazael ca rege peste Aram. 16 Să‑l ungi și pe Iehu, fiul lui Nimși, ca rege peste Israel, iar pe Elisei^[2], fiul lui Șafat din Abel-Mehola, să‑l ungi ca profet în locul tău. 17 Și se va întâmpla că cel care va scăpa de sabia lui Hazael va fi omorât de Iehu, iar cel care va scăpa de sabia lui Iehu va fi omorât de Elisei. 18 Dar Mi‑am păstrat în Israel șapte mii – toți genunchii care nu s‑au plecat înaintea lui BAAL^[3] și orice gură care nu i‑a dat sărutare. Chemarea lui Elisei

19 Ilie a plecat de acolo și l‑a găsit pe Elisei, fiul lui Șafat, arând cu douăsprezece perechi de boi. El însuși o mâna pe cea de‑a douăsprezecea. Ilie a trecut pe lângă el și și‑a aruncat mantaua peste acesta. 20 Elisei a lăsat boii, a alergat după Ilie și i‑a zis: – Dă‑mi voie să‑mi iau rămas bun de la tatăl meu și de la mama mea, apoi te voi urma! Ilie i‑a zis: – Du‑te și întoarce‑te, dar gândește‑te la ce ți‑am făcut! 21 Elisei a plecat de lângă el, a luat o pereche de boi și i‑a înjunghiat. Dând foc uneltelor de arat, a fiert carnea boilor și le‑a dat‑o oamenilor s‑o mănânce. După aceea s‑a ridicat, l‑a urmat pe Ilie și i‑a slujit.

Elijah runs away to Mount Horeb

1 Ahab told Jezebel everything Elijah had done. He told her how Elijah had killed all the prophets of Baal with his sword. 2 So Jezebel sent a message to Elijah. She said, ‘You can be sure that I will kill you, just as I killed the other prophets. I’ll do it by this time tomorrow. If I don’t, may the gods punish me greatly.’ 3 Elijah was afraid. So he ran for his life. He came to Beersheba in Judah. He left his servant there. 4 Then he travelled for one day into the desert. He came to a small bush. He sat down under it. He prayed that he would die. ‘LORD, I’ve had enough,’ he said. ‘Take my life. I’m no better than my people of long ago.’ 5 Then he lay down under the bush. And he fell asleep. Suddenly an angel touched him. The angel said, ‘Get up and eat.’ 6 Elijah looked around. Near his head he saw some bread. It had been baked over hot coals. A jar of water was also there. So Elijah ate and drank. Then he lay down again. 7 The angel of the LORD came to him a second time. He touched him and said, ‘Get up and eat. Your journey will be long and hard.’ 8 So he got up. He ate and drank. The food gave him new strength. He travelled for 40 days and 40 nights. He kept going until he arrived at Horeb. It was the mountain of God.

The Lord appears to Elijah

9 There he went into a cave and spent the night. A message came to Elijah from the LORD. He said, ‘Elijah, what are you doing here?’ 10 He replied, ‘LORD God who rules over all, I’ve been very committed to you. The Israelites have turned their backs on your covenant. They have torn down your altars. They’ve put your prophets to death with their swords. I’m the only one left. And they are trying to kill me.’ 11 The LORD said, ‘Go out. Stand on the mountain in front of me. I am going to pass by.’ As the LORD approached, a very powerful wind tore the mountains apart. It broke up the rocks. But the LORD wasn’t in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake. But the LORD wasn’t in the earthquake. 12 After the earthquake a fire came. But the LORD wasn’t in the fire. And after the fire there was only a gentle whisper. 13 When Elijah heard it, he pulled his coat over his face. He went out and stood at the entrance to the cave. Then a voice said to him, ‘Elijah, what are you doing here?’ 14 He replied, ‘LORD God who rules over all, I’ve been very committed to you. The Israelites have turned their backs on your covenant. They have torn down your altars. They’ve put your prophets to death with their swords. I’m the only one left. And they are trying to kill me.’ 15 The LORD said to him, ‘Go back the way you came. Go to the Desert of Damascus. When you get there, anoint Hazael as king over Aram. 16 Also anoint Jehu as king over Israel. He is the son of Nimshi. And anoint Elisha from Abel Meholah as the next prophet after you. He is the son of Shaphat. 17 Jehu will put to death anyone who escapes Hazael’s sword. And Elisha will put to death anyone who escapes Jehu’s sword. 18 But I will keep 7,000 people in Israel for myself. They have not bowed down to Baal. And they have not kissed him.’

The Lord chooses Elisha

19 Elijah left Mount Horeb. He saw Elisha, the son of Shaphat. Elisha was ploughing in a field. He was driving the last of 12 pairs of oxen. Elijah went up to him. He threw his coat around him. 20 Then Elisha left his oxen. He ran after Elijah. ‘Let me kiss my father and mother goodbye,’ he said. ‘Then I’ll come with you.’ ‘Go back’, Elijah replied. ‘What have I done to you?’ 21 So Elisha left him and went back. He got his two oxen and killed them. He burned the plough to cook the meat. He gave it to the people, and they ate it. Then he started to follow Elijah. He became Elijah’s servant.
