Thanksgiving and prayer
3I thank my God every time I remember you.4In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy5because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now,6being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.7It is right for me to feel this way about all of you, since I have you in my heart and, whether I am in chains or defending and confirming the gospel, all of you share in God’s grace with me.8God can testify how I long for all of you with the affection of Christ Jesus.9And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight,10so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ,11filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ – to the glory and praise of God.
Paul’s chains advance the gospel
12Now I want you to know, brothers and sisters,[2] that what has happened to me has actually served to advance the gospel.13As a result, it has become clear throughout the whole palace guard[3] and to everyone else that I am in chains for Christ.14And because of my chains, most of the brothers and sisters have become confident in the Lord and dare all the more to proclaim the gospel without fear.15It is true that some preach Christ out of envy and rivalry, but others out of goodwill.16The latter do so out of love, knowing that I am put here for the defence of the gospel.17The former preach Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely, supposing that they can stir up trouble for me while I am in chains.18But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice. Yes, and I will continue to rejoice,19for I know that through your prayers and God’s provision of the Spirit of Jesus Christ what has happened to me will turn out for my deliverance.[4]20I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death.21For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.22If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labour for me. Yet what shall I choose? I do not know!23I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far;24but it is more necessary for you that I remain in the body.25Convinced of this, I know that I will remain, and I will continue with all of you for your progress and joy in the faith,26so that through my being with you again your boasting in Christ Jesus will abound on account of me.
Life worthy of the gospel
27Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in the one Spirit,[5] striving together as one for the faith of the gospel28without being frightened in any way by those who oppose you. This is a sign to them that they will be destroyed, but that you will be saved – and that by God.29For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ not only to believe in him, but also to suffer for him,30since you are going through the same struggle you saw I had, and now hear that I still have.

Das Gebet des Apostels für die Gemeinde
3Ich danke meinem Gott, sooft ich an euch gedenke, (1Co 1:4; 1Th 1:2)4indem ich allezeit, in jedem meiner Gebete für euch alle mit Freuden Fürbitte tue, (Ro 1:9; Col 1:3; Col 2:5)5wegen eurer Gemeinschaft am Evangelium vom ersten Tag an bis jetzt, (Php 4:15)6weil ich davon überzeugt bin, dass der, welcher in euch ein gutes Werk angefangen hat, es auch vollenden wird bis auf den Tag Jesu Christi. Die Zuversicht des Apostels in Gefangenschaft und Leiden
12Ich will aber, Brüder, dass ihr erkennt, wie das, was mit mir geschehen ist, sich vielmehr zur Förderung des Evangeliums ausgewirkt hat, (Ex 18:11; Ac 21:28; Ac 22:27; Ro 8:28)13sodass in der ganzen kaiserlichen Kaserne und bei allen Übrigen bekannt geworden ist, dass ich um des Christus willen gefesselt bin, (Ac 28:20; Eph 3:1)14und dass die meisten der Brüder im Herrn, durch meine Fesseln ermutigt, es desto kühner wagen, das Wort zu reden ohne Furcht. (Eph 3:13; 2Ti 1:8)15Einige verkündigen zwar Christus auch aus Neid und Streitsucht, andere aber aus guter Gesinnung; (Ro 16:17)16diese verkündigen Christus aus Selbstsucht, nicht lauter, indem sie beabsichtigen, meinen Fesseln noch Bedrängnis hinzuzufügen; (1Ti 2:7)17jene aber aus Liebe, weil sie wissen, dass ich zur Verteidigung des Evangeliums bestimmt bin.18Was tut es? Jedenfalls wird auf alle Weise, sei es zum Vorwand oder in Wahrheit, Christus verkündigt, und darüber freue ich mich, ja, ich werde mich auch weiterhin freuen! (Mr 9:38; Lu 9:49)19Denn ich weiß, dass mir dies zur Rettung[2] ausschlagen wird durch eure Fürbitte und den Beistand des Geistes Jesu Christi, (Joh 14:16; Ro 8:9; Ro 8:28; 2Co 1:11)20entsprechend meiner festen Erwartung und Hoffnung, dass ich in nichts zuschanden werde, sondern dass in aller Freimütigkeit, wie allezeit, so auch jetzt, Christus hochgepriesen wird an meinem Leib, es sei durch Leben oder durch Tod. (Ro 5:5; Ro 12:1; Ro 14:7; 1Co 6:20; 2Co 4:10; Eph 6:20)21Denn für mich ist Christus das Leben, und das Sterben ein Gewinn. (Ga 2:20; Php 1:23; Php 3:21; Col 3:4; 1Jo 5:12; Re 14:13)22Wenn aber das Leben im Fleisch mir Gelegenheit gibt zu fruchtbarer Wirksamkeit, so weiß ich nicht, was ich wählen soll.23Denn ich werde von beidem bedrängt: Mich verlangt danach, aufzubrechen und bei Christus zu sein, was auch viel besser wäre; (Ps 16:11; 2Co 5:8; Php 1:21)24aber es ist nötiger, im Fleisch zu bleiben um euretwillen.25Und weil ich davon überzeugt bin, so weiß ich, dass ich bleiben und bei euch allen sein werde zu eurer Förderung und Freude im Glauben, (Ro 1:11; Ro 15:13; Ro 15:29; 2Co 1:24; Php 2:24)26damit ihr umso mehr zu rühmen habt in Christus Jesus um meinetwillen, weil ich wieder zu euch komme. Ermahnung zu Standhaftigkeit und Eintracht
27Nur führt euer Leben würdig des Evangeliums von Christus, damit ich, ob ich komme und euch sehe oder abwesend bin, von euch höre, dass ihr fest steht in einem Geist und einmütig miteinander kämpft für den Glauben des Evangeliums (Ac 4:32; 2Co 13:2; 2Co 13:10; Eph 4:1; Php 2:2; Php 2:12; Php 4:3; Col 1:10; Jud 1:3)28und euch in keiner Weise einschüchtern lasst von den Widersachern, was für sie ein Anzeichen des Verderbens, für euch aber der Errettung ist, und zwar von Gott. (Isa 41:10; Isa 51:7; Isa 51:12; Mt 10:28; 1Th 5:3; 2Th 1:6; Heb 13:6)29Denn euch wurde, was Christus betrifft, die Gnade verliehen, nicht nur an ihn zu glauben, sondern auch um seinetwillen zu leiden, (Php 4:13; 2Ti 1:8; 2Ti 3:12; Jas 5:13; 1Pe 4:13; 1Pe 4:16)30sodass ihr denselben Kampf habt, den ihr an mir gesehen habt und jetzt von mir hört. (Col 2:2; 1Th 2:2; 1Ti 6:12; 2Ti 4:7)
