1Meanwhile, when a crowd of many thousands had gathered, so that they were trampling on one another, Jesus began to speak first to his disciples, saying: ‘Be[1] on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.2There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known.3What you have said in the dark will be heard in the daylight, and what you have whispered in the ear in the inner rooms will be proclaimed from the roofs.4‘I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more.5But I will show you whom you should fear: fear him who, after your body has been killed, has authority to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him.6Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God.7Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.8‘I tell you, whoever publicly acknowledges me before others, the Son of Man will also acknowledge before the angels of God.9But whoever disowns me before others will be disowned before the angels of God.10And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.11‘When you are brought before synagogues, rulers and authorities, do not worry about how you will defend yourselves or what you will say,12for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say.’
The parable of the rich fool
13Someone in the crowd said to him, ‘Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.’14Jesus replied, ‘Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you?’15Then he said to them, ‘Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.’16And he told them this parable: ‘The ground of a certain rich man yielded an abundant harvest.17He thought to himself, “What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.”18‘Then he said, “This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store my surplus grain.19And I’ll say to myself, ‘You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.’ ”20‘But God said to him, “You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?”21‘This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich towards God.’
Do not worry
22Then Jesus said to his disciples: ‘Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear.23For life is more than food, and the body more than clothes.24Consider the ravens: they do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds!25Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life[2]?26Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest?27‘Consider how the wild flowers grow. They do not labour or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendour was dressed like one of these.28If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you – you of little faith!29And do not set your heart on what you will eat or drink; do not worry about it.30For the pagan world runs after all such things, and your Father knows that you need them.31But seek his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well.32‘Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom.33Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will never fail, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys.34For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Watchfulness
35‘Be dressed ready for service and keep your lamps burning,36like servants waiting for their master to return from a wedding banquet, so that when he comes and knocks they can immediately open the door for him.37It will be good for those servants whose master finds them watching when he comes. Truly I tell you, he will dress himself to serve, will make them recline at the table and will come and wait on them.38It will be good for those servants whose master finds them ready, even if he comes in the middle of the night or towards daybreak.39But understand this: if the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into.40You also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.’41Peter asked, ‘Lord, are you telling this parable to us, or to everyone?’42The Lord answered, ‘Who then is the faithful and wise manager, whom the master puts in charge of his servants to give them their food allowance at the proper time?43It will be good for that servant whom the master finds doing so when he returns.44Truly I tell you, he will put him in charge of all his possessions.45But suppose the servant says to himself, “My master is taking a long time in coming,” and he then begins to beat the other servants, both men and women, and to eat and drink and get drunk.46The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of. He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the unbelievers.47‘The servant who knows the master’s will and does not get ready or does not do what the master wants will be beaten with many blows.48But the one who does not know and does things deserving punishment will be beaten with few blows. From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.
Not peace but division
49‘I have come to bring fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled!50But I have a baptism to undergo, and what constraint I am under until it is completed!51Do you think I came to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but division.52From now on there will be five in one family divided against each other, three against two and two against three.53They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.’
Interpreting the times
54He said to the crowd: ‘When you see a cloud rising in the west, immediately you say, “It’s going to rain,” and it does.55And when the south wind blows, you say, “It’s going to be hot,” and it is.56Hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky. How is it that you don’t know how to interpret this present time?57‘Why don’t you judge for yourselves what is right?58As you are going with your adversary to the magistrate, try hard to be reconciled on the way, or your adversary may drag you off to the judge, and the judge turn you over to the officer, and the officer throw you into prison.59I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny.’

1Als sich inzwischen das Volk zu Tausenden gesammelt hatte, sodass sie aufeinander traten, begann er zuerst zu seinen Jüngern zu sprechen: Hütet euch vor dem Sauerteig der Pharisäer, welcher die Heuchelei ist! (Ex 12:15; Ex 12:19; Mt 16:6; Mt 16:12; Mt 23:3; 1Co 5:6)2Es ist aber nichts verdeckt, das nicht aufgedeckt werden wird, und nichts verborgen, das nicht bekannt werden wird. (Ec 12:14; Lu 8:17; Ro 2:16; 1Co 4:5; 1Ti 5:24)3Alles, was ihr im Finstern redet, wird man darum im Licht hören, und was ihr in den Kammern ins Ohr gesprochen habt, wird auf den Dächern verkündigt werden. (Mt 10:27; 2Co 4:2)4Ich sage aber euch, meinen Freunden: Fürchtet euch nicht vor denen, die den Leib töten und danach nichts Weiteres tun können. Das Gleichnis vom reichen Narren
13Es sprach aber einer aus der Volksmenge zu ihm: Meister, sage meinem Bruder, dass er das Erbe mit mir teilen soll!14Er aber sprach zu ihm: Mensch, wer hat mich zum Richter oder Erbteiler über euch gesetzt?15Er sagte aber zu ihnen: Habt acht und hütet euch vor der Habsucht! Denn niemandes Leben hängt von dem Überfluss ab, den er an Gütern hat. (Ps 49:7; Ps 119:36; Mt 4:4; 1Ti 6:7; Heb 13:5)16Und er sagte ihnen ein Gleichnis und sprach: Das Feld eines reichen Mannes hatte viel Frucht getragen. (Ge 26:12; Ge 41:47; Ps 73:3; Ps 73:12)17Und er überlegte bei sich selbst und sprach: Was soll ich tun, da ich keinen Platz habe, wo ich meine Früchte aufspeichern kann? (Isa 58:7; Ro 12:13; 1Ti 6:17)18Und er sprach: Das will ich tun: Ich will meine Scheunen abbrechen und größere bauen und will darin alles, was mir gewachsen ist, und meine Güter aufspeichern (De 14:22; Ec 5:18; 1Co 4:7; Jas 4:13)19und will zu meiner Seele sagen: Seele, du hast einen großen Vorrat auf viele Jahre; habe nun Ruhe, iss, trink und sei guten Mutes! Von unnützen Sorgen
22Und er sprach zu seinen Jüngern: Darum sage ich euch: Sorgt euch nicht um euer Leben, was ihr essen sollt, noch um den Leib, was ihr anziehen sollt. (Php 4:6; 1Pe 5:7)23Das Leben ist mehr als die Speise und der Leib mehr als die Kleidung. (Ge 19:17)24Betrachtet die Raben! Sie säen nicht und ernten nicht, sie haben weder Speicher noch Scheunen, und Gott nährt sie doch. Wie viel mehr seid ihr wert als die Vögel! (Job 38:41; Ps 147:9; Mt 12:12; Lu 12:7)25Wer aber von euch kann durch sein Sorgen zu seiner Lebenslänge eine einzige Elle hinzusetzen? (Ps 39:6; Ec 8:8)26Wenn ihr nun nicht einmal das Geringste vermögt, was sorgt ihr euch um das Übrige? (Ec 7:13; Lu 12:29; 1Pe 5:7)27Betrachtet die Lilien, wie sie wachsen! Sie mühen sich nicht und spinnen nicht; ich sage euch aber: Selbst Salomo in all seiner Herrlichkeit ist nicht gekleidet gewesen wie eine von ihnen! (1Ki 10:1)28Wenn aber Gott das Gras auf dem Feld, das heute steht und morgen in den Ofen geworfen wird, so kleidet, wie viel mehr euch, ihr Kleingläubigen! (Isa 40:6; Mt 8:26; Mt 14:31; 1Pe 1:24)29Und ihr sollt auch nicht danach trachten, was ihr essen oder was ihr trinken sollt; und beunruhigt euch nicht! (1Co 7:32)30Denn nach all diesem trachten die Heidenvölker der Welt; euer Vater aber weiß, dass ihr diese Dinge benötigt. (Mt 6:8; Mt 6:22; Mt 6:33)31Trachtet vielmehr nach dem Reich Gottes, so wird euch dies alles hinzugefügt werden! (1Ki 3:13; Mt 13:44; Joh 6:27; Ro 8:32)32Fürchte dich nicht, du kleine Herde; denn es hat eurem Vater gefallen, euch das Reich zu geben. (Isa 41:14; Mt 25:34; 1Co 1:26; Jas 2:5; 2Pe 1:11; Re 2:10)33Verkauft eure Habe und gebt Almosen! Macht euch Beutel, die nicht veralten, einen Schatz, der nicht vergeht, im Himmel, wo kein Dieb hinkommt und keine Motte ihr Zerstörungswerk treibt. (Mt 6:20; Lu 18:22; Ac 2:45; Ac 4:34; 1Ti 6:19)34Denn wo euer Schatz ist, da wird auch euer Herz sein. (Php 3:20; Heb 11:14)
Ermahnung zur Wachsamkeit
35Eure Lenden sollen umgürtet sein und eure Lichter brennend; (Ex 12:11; Mt 25:4; 1Pe 1:13)36und seid Menschen gleich, die ihren Herrn erwarten, wenn er von der Hochzeit aufbrechen wird, damit, wenn er kommt und anklopft, sie ihm sogleich auftun. (Mr 13:35)37Glückselig sind jene Knechte, welche der Herr, wenn er kommt, wachend finden wird! Wahrlich, ich sage euch: Er wird sich schürzen[1] und sie zu Tisch führen und hinzutreten und sie bedienen. (Mt 24:46; Lu 21:36; Joh 12:26; Re 7:17; Re 16:15)38Und wenn er in der zweiten Nachtwache kommt oder in der dritten Nachtwache kommt und sie so findet, glückselig sind jene Knechte! (Mt 14:25)39Das aber erkennt: Wenn der Hausherr wüsste, zu welcher Stunde der Dieb käme, so würde er wachen und nicht in sein Haus einbrechen lassen. (1Th 5:2; Re 3:3)40Darum seid auch ihr bereit! Denn der Sohn des Menschen kommt zu einer Stunde, da ihr es nicht meint. (Mt 24:42; Mt 25:13)41Da sprach Petrus zu ihm: Herr, sagst du dieses Gleichnis für uns oder auch für alle?42Der Herr aber sprach: Wer ist wohl der treue und kluge Haushalter[2], den der Herr über seine Dienerschaft setzen wird, damit er ihnen zur rechten Zeit die verordnete Speise gibt? (Ac 20:28; 1Co 4:2; 1Pe 4:10)43Glückselig ist jener Knecht, den sein Herr, wenn er kommt, bei solchem Tun finden wird! (Lu 12:37)44Wahrlich, ich sage euch: Er wird ihn über alle seine Güter setzen. (Mt 25:21)45Wenn aber jener Knecht in seinem Herzen spricht: Mein Herr säumt zu kommen! und anfängt, die Knechte und die Mägde zu schlagen, auch zu essen und zu trinken und sich zu berauschen (Ec 8:11; Lu 20:10; Lu 21:34; 2Pe 3:3)46so wird der Herr jenes Knechtes an einem Tag kommen, da er es nicht erwartet, und zu einer Stunde, die er nicht kennt, und wird ihn entzweihauen und ihm sein Teil mit den Ungläubigen geben. (Re 2:16; Re 21:8)47Der Knecht aber, der den Willen seines Herrn kannte und sich nicht bereithielt und auch nicht nach seinem Willen tat, wird viele Schläge erleiden müssen; (Jas 4:17)48wer ihn aber nicht kannte und doch tat, was Schläge verdient, der wird wenig Schläge erleiden müssen. Denn wem viel gegeben ist, bei dem wird man viel suchen; und wem viel anvertraut ist, von dem wird man desto mehr fordern. (Mt 11:22; Mt 25:15; Joh 15:22; Ro 2:12; Heb 2:2)
Das Bekenntnis zu Christus bringt Trennung
49Ich bin gekommen, ein Feuer auf die Erde zu bringen, und wie wünschte ich, es wäre schon entzündet! (Isa 10:17; Mt 3:11; Mr 9:49)50Aber ich muss mich taufen lassen mit einer Taufe, und wie drängt es mich, bis sie vollbracht ist! (Mr 10:38)51Meint ihr, dass ich gekommen sei, Frieden auf Erden zu geben? Nein, sage ich euch, sondern vielmehr Entzweiung! (Lu 2:14; Lu 2:34; Ac 14:2)52Denn von nun an werden fünf in einem Haus entzweit sein, drei mit zweien und zwei mit dreien; (Ps 41:8; Joh 7:43; Ac 28:24)53der Vater wird mit dem Sohn entzweit sein und der Sohn mit dem Vater, die Mutter mit der Tochter und die Tochter mit der Mutter, die Schwiegermutter mit ihrer Schwiegertochter und die Schwiegertochter mit ihrer Schwiegermutter. (Mic 7:5; Zec 13:3; Mt 10:21)
Zeichen der Zeit. Ermahnung zu Versöhnlichkeit
54Er sprach aber auch zu der Volksmenge: Wenn ihr das Gewölk aufsteigen seht vom Westen her, so sagt ihr sofort: Es gibt Regen!, und es geschieht auch so. (1Ki 18:44)55Und wenn der Südwind weht, so sagt ihr: Es wird heiß!, und es geschieht auch so. (Ps 78:26; So 4:16; Ac 27:13; Ac 28:13)56Ihr Heuchler, das Aussehen der Erde und des Himmels könnt ihr beurteilen; wie kommt es aber, dass ihr diese Zeit nicht beurteilt? (Lu 19:42; Lu 20:1; Joh 12:37)57Und warum entscheidet ihr nicht von euch selbst aus, was recht ist? (Ro 2:14)58Denn wenn du mit deinem Widersacher zur Obrigkeit gehst, so gib dir auf dem Weg Mühe, von ihm loszukommen, damit er dich nicht vor den Richter schleppt und der Richter dich dem Gerichtsdiener übergibt und der Gerichtsdiener dich ins Gefängnis wirft. (Mt 5:25)59Ich sage dir: Du wirst von dort nicht herauskommen, bis du auch den letzten Groschen bezahlt hast! (Mt 5:26)
