1When the whole nation had finished crossing the Jordan, the Lord said to Joshua,2‘Choose twelve men from among the people, one from each tribe,3and tell them to take up twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan, from right where the priests are standing, and carry them over with you and put them down at the place where you stay tonight.’4So Joshua called together the twelve men he had appointed from the Israelites, one from each tribe,5and said to them, ‘Go over before the ark of the Lord your God into the middle of the Jordan. Each of you is to take up a stone on his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the Israelites,6to serve as a sign among you. In the future, when your children ask you, “What do these stones mean?”7tell them that the flow of the Jordan was cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord. When it crossed the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. These stones are to be a memorial to the people of Israel for ever.’8So the Israelites did as Joshua commanded them. They took twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan, according to the number of the tribes of the Israelites, as the Lord had told Joshua; and they carried them over with them to their camp, where they put them down.9Joshua set up the twelve stones that had been[1] in the middle of the Jordan at the spot where the priests who carried the ark of the covenant had stood. And they are there to this day.10Now the priests who carried the ark remained standing in the middle of the Jordan until everything the Lord had commanded Joshua was done by the people, just as Moses had directed Joshua. The people hurried over,11and as soon as all of them had crossed, the ark of the Lord and the priests came to the other side while the people watched.12The men of Reuben, Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh crossed over, ready for battle, in front of the Israelites, as Moses had directed them.13About forty thousand armed for battle crossed over before the Lord to the plains of Jericho for war.14That day the Lord exalted Joshua in the sight of all Israel; and they stood in awe of him all the days of his life, just as they had stood in awe of Moses.15Then the Lord said to Joshua,16‘Command the priests carrying the ark of the covenant law to come up out of the Jordan.’17So Joshua commanded the priests, ‘Come up out of the Jordan.’18And the priests came up out of the river carrying the ark of the covenant of the Lord. No sooner had they set their feet on the dry ground than the waters of the Jordan returned to their place and ran in flood as before.19On the tenth day of the first month the people went up from the Jordan and camped at Gilgal on the eastern border of Jericho.20And Joshua set up at Gilgal the twelve stones they had taken out of the Jordan.21He said to the Israelites, ‘In the future when your descendants ask their parents, “What do these stones mean?”22tell them, “Israel crossed the Jordan on dry ground.”23For the Lord your God dried up the Jordan before you until you had crossed over. The Lord your God did to the Jordan what he had done to the Red Sea[2] when he dried it up before us until we had crossed over.24He did this so that all the peoples of the earth might know that the hand of the Lord is powerful and so that you might always fear the Lord your God.’

Zwei Denkmäler zum ewigen Gedenken
1Es geschah aber, nachdem das ganze Volk vollends über den Jordan gezogen war, dass der HERR zu Josua redete und sprach:2Nehmt euch aus dem Volk zwölf Männer, aus jedem Stamm einen Mann, (Nu 1:1; Jos 3:12; Mt 10:1)3und gebietet ihnen und sprecht: Hebt hier zwölf Steine auf, mitten aus dem Jordan, von dem Ort, wo die Füße der Priester gestanden haben, und bringt sie mit euch hinüber und legt sie nieder in dem Nachtlager, wo ihr diese Nacht verbringen werdet! (Ge 28:22; Jos 4:8; Jos 4:20; Jos 24:27)4Da rief Josua die zwölf Männer, die er aus den Kindern Israels bestellt hatte, aus jedem Stamm einen Mann;5und er sprach zu ihnen: Geht hinüber, vor die Lade des HERRN, eures Gottes, mitten in den Jordan, und hebt jeder einen Stein auf seine Schulter, nach der Zahl der Stämme der Kinder Israels, (Ex 24:4)6damit sie ein Zeichen unter euch seien. Wenn eure Kinder künftig fragen und sagen werden: »Was haben diese Steine für euch zu bedeuten?«, (Ex 12:26; Ex 13:14; De 6:20; Jos 22:27; Ps 44:2; Ps 78:3)7so sollt ihr ihnen sagen, dass das Wasser des Jordan vor der Bundeslade des HERRN abgeschnitten wurde; als sie durch den Jordan ging, sind die Wasser des Jordan abgeschnitten worden; so sollen diese Steine den Kindern Israels zu einem ewigen Gedenken dienen! (Ex 12:14; De 16:3; 1Ch 16:12)8Da machten es die Kinder Israels so, wie es Josua geboten hatte, und sie hoben zwölf Steine aus dem Jordan, wie der HERR es Josua gesagt hatte, nach der Zahl der Stämme der Kinder Israels, und brachten sie mit sich in das Nachtlager und legten sie dort nieder. (Jos 1:16; Jos 4:3)9Und Josua richtete auch zwölf Steine mitten im Jordan auf, an der Stelle, wo die Füße der Priester gestanden hatten, welche die Bundeslade trugen; sie sind noch dort bis zu diesem Tag. (Ex 28:21; 1Ki 18:31)10Die Priester aber, welche die Lade trugen, standen mitten im Jordan, bis alles ausgerichtet war, was der HERR Josua geboten hatte, dem Volk zu sagen, ganz wie Mose es dem Josua geboten hatte. Und das Volk ging rasch hinüber. (Jos 3:17)11Als nun das ganze Volk vollständig hinübergegangen war, da zog die Lade des HERRN auch hinüber, und die Priester, vor den Augen des Volkes. (Nu 10:33; Jos 4:4; Isa 52:12)12Die Söhne Rubens aber und die Söhne Gads und der halbe Stamm Manasse gingen in Kampfordnung vor den Kindern Israels her, wie Mose zu ihnen geredet hatte. (Nu 32:20)13Etwa 40 000 zum Krieg Gerüstete zogen vor dem HERRN zum Kampf in die Ebene von Jericho. (Jud 20:1)14An diesem Tag machte der HERR den Josua groß vor den Augen von ganz Israel; und sie fürchteten ihn, wie sie Mose gefürchtet hatten, sein ganzes Leben lang. (Ex 14:31; De 34:9; Jos 1:17; Jos 3:7; 1Sa 12:18; 1Ki 3:28)15Und der HERR sprach zu Josua:16Gebiete den Priestern, welche die Lade des Zeugnisses tragen, dass sie aus dem Jordan heraufsteigen! (Jos 3:8)17Und Josua befahl den Priestern und sprach: Steigt herauf aus dem Jordan!18Und als die Priester, welche die Bundeslade des HERRN trugen, aus der Mitte des Jordan heraufstiegen und die Fußsohlen der Priester kaum das Trockene berührt hatten, da kehrte das Wasser des Jordan wieder in das Flussbett zurück und trat über alle seine Ufer wie zuvor. (Jos 3:15)19Es war aber der zehnte Tag des ersten Monats, als das Volk aus dem Jordan heraufstieg; und sie lagerten sich in Gilgal, an der Ostgrenze [des Gebietes] von Jericho. (Jos 5:9; Jos 10:7; Jos 10:15; Jos 10:43; 1Sa 11:14; 1Sa 15:12; 1Sa 15:33; Mic 6:5)20Und Josua richtete die zwölf Steine, die sie aus dem Jordan genommen hatten, in Gilgal auf; (Jos 4:3; Jos 4:8)21und er redete zu den Kindern Israels und sprach: Wenn in Zukunft eure Kinder ihre Väter fragen und sagen werden: »Was bedeuten diese Steine?«, (Jos 4:6)22so sollt ihr es euren Kindern erklären und sagen: Israel ging auf trockenem Boden durch diesen Jordan, (Jos 3:17; Jos 4:7)23als der HERR, euer Gott, das Wasser des Jordan vor euch vertrocknen ließ, bis ihr hinübergegangen wart, ebenso wie der HERR, euer Gott, es am Schilfmeer getan hat, das er vor uns vertrocknen ließ, bis wir hindurchgegangen waren; (Ex 14:21; Ps 66:6)24damit alle Völker auf Erden erkennen, wie mächtig die Hand des HERRN ist, und damit ihr den HERRN, euren Gott, allezeit fürchtet! (Ex 9:16; Ex 14:31; De 6:2; 1Ki 8:42; 2Ki 19:19; Ps 98:1; Isa 10:6; Isa 51:5; Isa 52:10)
