1Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘Leave this place, you and the people you brought up out of Egypt, and go up to the land I promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, saying, “I will give it to your descendants.”2I will send an angel before you and drive out the Canaanites, Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites.3Go up to the land flowing with milk and honey. But I will not go with you, because you are a stiff-necked people and I might destroy you on the way.’4When the people heard these distressing words, they began to mourn and no-one put on any ornaments.5For the Lord had said to Moses, ‘Tell the Israelites, “You are a stiff-necked people. If I were to go with you even for a moment, I might destroy you. Now take off your ornaments and I will decide what to do with you.” ’6So the Israelites stripped off their ornaments at Mount Horeb.
The tent of meeting
7Now Moses used to take a tent and pitch it outside the camp some distance away, calling it the ‘tent of meeting’. Anyone enquiring of the Lord would go to the tent of meeting outside the camp.8And whenever Moses went out to the tent, all the people rose and stood at the entrances to their tents, watching Moses until he entered the tent.9As Moses went into the tent, the pillar of cloud would come down and stay at the entrance, while the Lord spoke with Moses.10Whenever the people saw the pillar of cloud standing at the entrance to the tent, they all stood and worshipped, each at the entrance to their tent.11The Lord would speak to Moses face to face, as one speaks to a friend. Then Moses would return to the camp, but his young assistant Joshua son of Nun did not leave the tent.
Moses and the glory of the Lord
12Moses said to the Lord, ‘You have been telling me, “Lead these people,” but you have not let me know whom you will send with me. You have said, “I know you by name and you have found favour with me.”13If you are pleased with me, teach me your ways so I may know you and continue to find favour with you. Remember that this nation is your people.’14The Lord replied, ‘My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.’15Then Moses said to him, ‘If your Presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here.16How will anyone know that you are pleased with me and with your people unless you go with us? What else will distinguish me and your people from all the other people on the face of the earth?’17And the Lord said to Moses, ‘I will do the very thing you have asked, because I am pleased with you and I know you by name.’18Then Moses said, ‘Now show me your glory.’19And the Lord said, ‘I will cause all my goodness to pass in front of you, and I will proclaim my name, the Lord, in your presence. I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.20But,’ he said, ‘you cannot see my face, for no-one may see me and live.’21Then the Lord said, ‘There is a place near me where you may stand on a rock.22When my glory passes by, I will put you in a cleft in the rock and cover you with my hand until I have passed by.23Then I will remove my hand and you will see my back; but my face must not be seen.’

Das Volk bereut sein Tun
1Und der HERR sprach zu Mose: Geh hin, zieh von hier hinauf, du und das Volk, das du aus dem Land Ägypten heraufgeführt hast, in das Land, das ich Abraham, Isaak und Jakob mit einem Eid versprochen habe, indem ich sagte: Deinem Samen will ich es geben! (Ex 32:13)2— ich will aber einen Engel vor dir hersenden und die Kanaaniter, Amoriter, Hetiter, Pheresiter, Hewiter und Jebusiter vertreiben —, (Ex 23:20; Ex 32:34)3in das Land, in dem Milch und Honig fließt. Denn ich will nicht in deiner Mitte hinaufziehen, weil du ein halsstarriges Volk bist; ich würde dich sonst unterwegs vertilgen! (Ex 3:8; Ex 32:9; Ex 33:14; De 4:24)4Als das Volk diese harte Rede hörte, trug es Leid, und niemand legte seinen Schmuck an. (1Sa 25:1; 1Sa 28:3; 1Ki 21:27; Jer 6:26)5Denn der HERR hatte zu Mose gesprochen: Sage den Kindern Israels: Ihr seid ein halsstarriges Volk! Wenn ich nur einen Augenblick in deiner Mitte hinaufzöge, so müsste ich dich vertilgen. Und nun lege deinen Schmuck von dir ab, so will ich sehen, was ich dir tun will! (Isa 22:12; Joe 2:12; Jas 4:9)6Da rissen sich die Kinder Israels ihren Schmuck ab beim Berg Horeb. (Isa 3:18; Eze 26:16)
Das Zelt der Zusammenkunft außerhalb des Lagers
7Mose aber nahm das Zelt und schlug es sich außerhalb des Lagers auf, fern von dem Lager, und er nannte es »Zelt der Zusammenkunft«.[1] Und so geschah es, dass jeder, der den HERRN suchte, zum Zelt der Zusammenkunft hinausgehen musste, das außerhalb des Lagers war. (De 4:29; Lu 11:9; Heb 13:11)8Und es geschah, wenn Mose hinausging zu dem Zelt, dann stand das ganze Volk auf, und jedermann blieb stehen am Eingang seines Zeltes und sah Mose nach, bis er in das Zelt hineingegangen war.9Und es geschah, wenn Mose in das Zelt hineinging, so kam die Wolkensäule herab und stand am Eingang des Zeltes, und Er redete mit Mose. (Nu 12:8; Ps 99:7)10Und wenn das ganze Volk die Wolkensäule am Eingang des Zeltes stehen sah, dann standen sie alle auf und verneigten sich, jeder am Eingang seines Zeltes. (Ex 4:31)11Und der HERR redete mit Mose von Angesicht zu Angesicht, wie ein Mann mit seinem Freund redet; und er kehrte wieder ins Lager zurück. Aber sein Diener Josua, der Sohn Nuns, der junge Mann, wich nicht aus dem Inneren des Zeltes. (De 34:10; Joh 15:15)
Mose schaut die Herrlichkeit des Herrn
12Und Mose sprach zu dem HERRN: Siehe, du sprichst zu mir: Führe das Volk hinauf; aber du lässt mich nicht wissen, wen du mit mir senden willst; und doch hast du gesagt: Ich kenne dich mit Namen, und du hast Gnade gefunden vor meinen Augen. (Ex 3:4; Ex 33:1; Ex 33:17; Ex 34:9; 2Sa 15:25; Isa 43:1; Joh 10:3; Joh 10:14; 2Ti 2:19)13Wenn ich nun Gnade gefunden habe vor deinen Augen, so lass mich doch deine Wege wissen und dich erkennen, damit ich Gnade finde vor deinen Augen; und bedenke doch, dass dieses Volk dein Volk ist! (Ex 32:11; De 9:29; Ps 25:4; Ps 28:9; Ps 103:7; Joh 14:6)14Und Er sprach: Soll ich selbst mitgehen und dich zur Ruhe führen? (De 31:17)16Denn woran soll denn erkannt werden, dass ich Gnade gefunden habe vor deinen Augen, ich und dein Volk, als daran, dass du mit uns gehst, sodass ich und dein Volk ausgezeichnet werden vor jedem Volk, das auf dem Erdboden ist? (Ps 63:3; Joh 1:14; Ac 7:55; 2Co 3:18)19Und [der HERR] sprach: Ich will alle meine Güte vor deinem Angesicht vorüberziehen lassen und will den Namen des HERRN vor dir ausrufen. Und wem ich gnädig bin, dem bin ich gnädig, und über wen ich mich erbarme, über den erbarme ich mich. (Ex 34:5; Ro 9:15)20Und er sprach weiter: Mein Angesicht kannst du nicht sehen, denn kein Mensch wird leben, der mich sieht! (Ps 61:3)22Wenn dann meine Herrlichkeit vorübergeht, so stelle ich dich in die Felsenkluft und will dich mit meiner Hand so lange bedecken, bis ich vorübergegangen bin.
