1So the men of Kiriath Jearim came and took up the ark of the Lord. They brought it to Abinadab’s house on the hill and consecrated Eleazar his son to guard the ark of the Lord.
Samuel subdues the Philistines at Mizpah
2The ark remained at Kiriath Jearim a long time – twenty years in all. Then all the people of Israel turned back to the Lord.3So Samuel said to all the Israelites, ‘If you are returning to the Lord with all your hearts, then rid yourselves of the foreign gods and the Ashtoreths and commit yourselves to the Lord and serve him only, and he will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines.’4So the Israelites put away their Baals and Ashtoreths, and served the Lord only.5Then Samuel said, ‘Assemble all Israel at Mizpah, and I will intercede with the Lord for you.’6When they had assembled at Mizpah, they drew water and poured it out before the Lord. On that day they fasted and there they confessed, ‘We have sinned against the Lord.’ Now Samuel was serving as leader[1] of Israel at Mizpah.7When the Philistines heard that Israel had assembled at Mizpah, the rulers of the Philistines came up to attack them. When the Israelites heard of it, they were afraid because of the Philistines.8They said to Samuel, ‘Do not stop crying out to the Lord our God for us, that he may rescue us from the hand of the Philistines.’9Then Samuel took a suckling lamb and sacrificed it as a whole burnt offering to the Lord. He cried out to the Lord on Israel’s behalf, and the Lord answered him.10While Samuel was sacrificing the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to engage Israel in battle. But that day the Lord thundered with loud thunder against the Philistines and threw them into such a panic that they were routed before the Israelites.11The men of Israel rushed out of Mizpah and pursued the Philistines, slaughtering them along the way to a point below Beth Kar.12Then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen. He named it Ebenezer,[2] saying, ‘Thus far the Lord has helped us.’13So the Philistines were subdued and they stopped invading Israel’s territory. Throughout Samuel’s lifetime, the hand of the Lord was against the Philistines.14The towns from Ekron to Gath that the Philistines had captured from Israel were restored to Israel, and Israel delivered the neighbouring territory from the hands of the Philistines. And there was peace between Israel and the Amorites.15Samuel continued as Israel’s leader all the days of his life.16From year to year he went on a circuit from Bethel to Gilgal to Mizpah, judging Israel in all those places.17But he always went back to Ramah, where his home was, and there he also held court for Israel. And he built an altar there to the Lord.

1So kamen die Leute von Kirjat-Jearim und holten die Lade des HERRN hinauf und brachten sie in das Haus Abinadabs auf dem Hügel, und sie heiligten seinen Sohn Eleasar, damit er die Lade des HERRN hütete. (2Sa 6:3; Ps 132:6)2Und von dem Tag an, da die Lade in Kirjat-Jearim blieb, verging eine lange Zeit, bis 20 Jahre um waren; und das ganze Haus Israel rief wehklagend nach dem HERRN. (Ho 5:15; Zec 12:10; Lu 15:17)3Samuel aber redete zu dem ganzen Haus Israel und sprach: Wenn ihr von ganzem Herzen zu dem HERRN zurückkehren wollt, dann tut die fremden Götter und Astarten aus eurer Mitte und richtet euer Herz zu dem HERRN und dient ihm allein, so wird er euch aus der Hand der Philister erretten! (Jud 10:16)5Samuel aber sprach: Versammelt ganz Israel nach Mizpa, so will ich für euch zum HERRN beten! Und Samuel richtete die Kinder Israels in Mizpa. (Ex 14:10)8Und die Kinder Israels sprachen zu Samuel: Lass nicht ab, für uns zu dem HERRN, unserem Gott, zu rufen, dass er uns aus der Hand der Philister errette! (1Sa 7:3; 2Ki 19:4)9Und Samuel nahm ein Milchlamm und opferte es vollständig als Brandopfer dem HERRN; und Samuel schrie zum HERRN für Israel, und der HERR erhörte ihn. (Le 1:10; Ps 99:6; Jas 5:16)10Es geschah nämlich, während Samuel das Brandopfer darbrachte, da näherten sich die Philister zum Kampf gegen Israel. Aber an jenem Tag donnerte der HERR mit gewaltiger Stimme gegen die Philister und verwirrte sie, sodass sie vor Israel geschlagen wurden. (Jos 10:10; Jud 4:15; 1Sa 2:10; Ps 18:15)11Da zogen die Männer Israels von Mizpa aus und jagten die Philister und schlugen sie bis unterhalb Beth-Kar. (1Sa 7:13)12Und Samuel nahm einen Stein und stellte ihn zwischen Mizpa und Schen auf, und er gab ihm den Namen Eben-Eser, und sprach: Bis hierher hat der HERR uns geholfen! (Ge 28:18; Jos 24:26; Ps 90:1; Ac 26:22; 2Co 1:10)13So wurden die Philister gedemütigt und kamen künftig nicht mehr in das Gebiet Israels. Und die Hand des HERRN war gegen die Philister, solange Samuel lebte. (Jud 13:1; Jud 13:5; 2Sa 8:1)14So kamen die Städte, welche die Philister von Israel weggenommen hatten, wieder an Israel, von Ekron an bis nach Gat; auch ihr [dazugehöriges] Gebiet errettete Israel aus der Hand der Philister. Und es war Friede zwischen Israel und den Amoritern. (Jos 15:45; 1Ch 18:1)15Und Samuel richtete Israel sein Leben lang; (1Sa 1:11; 1Sa 1:28; 1Ki 15:5; Ps 23:6)16und er zog Jahr für Jahr umher und machte die Runde in Bethel, Gilgal und Mizpa und richtete Israel an allen diesen Orten. (Jos 5:9)17Doch kehrte er immer wieder nach Rama zurück; denn dort war sein Haus; und er richtete Israel dort; und er baute dort dem HERRN einen Altar.
