1Now the Philistines fought against Israel; the Israelites fled before them, and many fell dead on Mount Gilboa.2The Philistines were in hot pursuit of Saul and his sons, and they killed his sons Jonathan, Abinadab and Malki-Shua.3The fighting grew fierce around Saul, and when the archers overtook him, they wounded him critically.4Saul said to his armour-bearer, ‘Draw your sword and run me through, or these uncircumcised fellows will come and run me through and abuse me.’ But the armour-bearer was terrified and would not do it; so Saul took his own sword and fell on it.5When the armour-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he too fell on his sword and died with him.6So Saul and his three sons and his armour-bearer and all his men died together that same day.7When the Israelites along the valley and those across the Jordan saw that the Israelite army had fled and that Saul and his sons had died, they abandoned their towns and fled. And the Philistines came and occupied them.8The next day, when the Philistines came to strip the dead, they found Saul and his three sons fallen on Mount Gilboa.9They cut off his head and stripped off his armour, and they sent messengers throughout the land of the Philistines to proclaim the news in the temple of their idols and among their people.10They put his armour in the temple of the Ashtoreths and fastened his body to the wall of Beth Shan.11When the people of Jabesh Gilead heard what the Philistines had done to Saul,12all their valiant men marched through the night to Beth Shan. They took down the bodies of Saul and his sons from the wall of Beth Shan and went to Jabesh, where they burned them.13Then they took their bones and buried them under a tamarisk tree at Jabesh, and they fasted seven days.

(1Sa 28:1; 1Sa 28:4; 1Sa 28:19; 2Sa 1:21; 1Ch 10:1)2Und die Philister drangen auf Saul und seine Söhne ein; und die Philister erschlugen Jonathan und Abinadab und Malchischua, die Söhne Sauls. (1Sa 14:49; Ps 116:15)3Und der Kampf wurde hart gegen Saul; und die Bogenschützen erreichten ihn, und er zitterte vor den Schützen. (1Ch 10:3)4Da sprach Saul zu seinem Waffenträger: Zieh dein Schwert und durchbohre mich damit, damit nicht diese Unbeschnittenen kommen und mich erstechen und misshandeln! Aber sein Waffenträger wollte nicht, denn er fürchtete sich sehr. Da nahm Saul das Schwert und stürzte sich hinein. (Jud 9:54; 1Sa 17:26; 1Sa 17:36; 2Sa 1:9)5Als nun sein Waffenträger sah, dass Saul tot war, stürzte auch er sich in sein Schwert und starb mit ihm. (1Sa 28:19; Ho 13:10)7Als aber die Männer von Israel, die jenseits der Ebene und jenseits des Jordan waren, sahen, dass die Männer Israels geflohen und dass Saul und seine Söhne tot waren, da verließen sie die Städte und flohen. Und die Philister kamen und wohnten darin. (De 28:33; Jud 6:2; 1Sa 13:6)8Und es geschah am folgenden Tag, da kamen die Philister, um die Erschlagenen auszuplündern, und sie fanden Saul und seine drei Söhne auf dem Bergland von Gilboa liegen. (1Ch 10:8)9Da schlugen sie ihm den Kopf ab und zogen ihm seine Waffenrüstung aus und sandten [Boten] in das Land der Philister ringsumher, um diese Freudenbotschaft im Haus ihrer Götzen und unter dem Volk zu verkündigen. (1Sa 5:1; 2Sa 1:20; Ps 115:5)10Und sie legten seine Waffen in das Haus der Astarte, aber seinen Leichnam hängten sie an die Mauer von Beth-Schean. (Jos 17:11; Jud 1:27; Jud 2:13; 1Sa 21:9; 1Ch 10:10)11Als aber die Einwohner von Jabes in Gilead hörten, was die Philister Saul getan hatten, (1Sa 11:1)12da machten sich alle tapferen Männer auf und gingen die ganze Nacht hindurch und nahmen den Leichnam Sauls und die Leichname seiner Söhne von der Mauer von Beth-Schean, und sie kamen nach Jabes und verbrannten sie dort.
