1[1] After Saul returned from pursuing the Philistines, he was told, ‘David is in the Desert of En Gedi.’2So Saul took three thousand able young men from all Israel and set out to look for David and his men near the Crags of the Wild Goats.3He came to the sheepfolds along the way; a cave was there, and Saul went in to relieve himself. David and his men were far back in the cave.4The men said, ‘This is the day the Lord spoke of when he said[2] to you, “I will give your enemy into your hands for you to deal with as you wish.” ’ Then David crept up unnoticed and cut off a corner of Saul’s robe.5Afterwards, David was conscience-stricken for having cut off a corner of his robe.6He said to his men, ‘The Lord forbid that I should do such a thing to my master, the Lord’s anointed, or lay my hand on him; for he is the anointed of the Lord.’7With these words David sharply rebuked his men and did not allow them to attack Saul. And Saul left the cave and went his way.8Then David went out of the cave and called out to Saul, ‘My lord the king!’ When Saul looked behind him, David bowed down and prostrated himself with his face to the ground.9He said to Saul, ‘Why do you listen when men say, “David is bent on harming you”?10This day you have seen with your own eyes how the Lord gave you into my hands in the cave. Some urged me to kill you, but I spared you; I said, “I will not lay my hand on my lord, because he is the Lord’s anointed.”11See, my father, look at this piece of your robe in my hand! I cut off the corner of your robe but did not kill you. See that there is nothing in my hand to indicate that I am guilty of wrongdoing or rebellion. I have not wronged you, but you are hunting me down to take my life.12May the Lord judge between you and me. And may the Lord avenge the wrongs you have done to me, but my hand will not touch you.13As the old saying goes, “From evildoers come evil deeds,” so my hand will not touch you.14‘Against whom has the king of Israel come out? Who are you pursuing? A dead dog? A flea?15May the Lord be our judge and decide between us. May he consider my cause and uphold it; may he vindicate me by delivering me from your hand.’16When David finished saying this, Saul asked, ‘Is that your voice, David my son?’ And he wept aloud.17‘You are more righteous than I,’ he said. ‘You have treated me well, but I have treated you badly.18You have just now told me about the good you did to me; the Lord gave me into your hands, but you did not kill me.19When a man finds his enemy, does he let him get away unharmed? May the Lord reward you well for the way you treated me today.20I know that you will surely be king and that the kingdom of Israel will be established in your hands.21Now swear to me by the Lord that you will not kill off my descendants or wipe out my name from my father’s family.’22So David gave his oath to Saul. Then Saul returned home, but David and his men went up to the stronghold.

1Und David zog von dort hinauf und blieb auf den Berghöhen von En-Gedi. (Jos 15:62; 2Ch 20:2; So 1:14; Eze 47:10)2Und es geschah, als Saul von der Verfolgung der Philister zurückkehrte, da wurde ihm berichtet: Siehe, David ist in der Wüste von En-Gedi! (1Sa 23:27)3Und Saul nahm 3 000 auserlesene Männer aus ganz Israel und zog hin, um David samt seinen Männern zu suchen, auf den Steinbockfelsen. (Ps 104:18)4Und als er zu den Schafhürden am Weg kam, war dort eine Höhle; und Saul ging hinein, um seine Füße zu bedecken.[1] David aber und seine Männer saßen hinten in der Höhle. (Ps 57:1; Ps 142:1; Pr 20:24; Jer 10:23)5Da sprachen die Männer Davids zu ihm: Siehe, das ist der Tag, von dem der HERR zu dir gesagt hat: Siehe, ich will deinen Feind in deine Hand geben, dass du mit ihm machst, was dir gefällt! Und David stand auf und schnitt heimlich einen Zipfel von Sauls Obergewand ab. (1Sa 26:8; Ps 1:1; Pr 16:32; Jas 1:6; Jas 1:13)6Aber es geschah danach, da schlug ihm sein Herz, weil er den Zipfel von Sauls Obergewand abgeschnitten hatte; (2Sa 24:10)7und er sprach zu seinen Männern: Das lasse der HERR ferne von mir sein, dass ich so etwas tue und meine Hand an meinen Herrn, den Gesalbten des HERRN, lege; denn er ist der Gesalbte des HERRN! (1Sa 26:9; 2Sa 1:14)8So hielt David seine Männer mit diesen Worten zurück und ließ ihnen nicht zu, sich gegen Saul zu erheben. Saul aber machte sich auf aus der Höhle und ging seines Weges. (Ps 7:4; Mt 5:44; Ro 12:17)9Danach machte sich auch David auf und verließ die Höhle und rief Saul nach und sprach: Mein Herr [und] König! Da sah Saul hinter sich. Und David neigte sein Angesicht zur Erde und verbeugte sich. (1Sa 26:13)10Und David sprach zu Saul: Warum hörst du auf die Worte der Leute, die sagen: Siehe, David sucht dein Unglück? Und Saul erhob seine Stimme und weinte; (1Sa 26:17; Pr 15:1)18und er sprach zu David: Du bist gerechter als ich; denn du hast mir mit Gutem vergolten, ich aber habe dir mit Bösem vergolten! (Ge 38:26; Ro 12:17)19Und du hast heute bewiesen, dass du Gutes an mir getan hast, weil der HERR mich in deine Hand gegeben hat, und du hast mich doch nicht umgebracht. (1Sa 23:12; Ps 31:8)20Und wie sollte jemand seinen Feind finden und ihn friedlich seines Weges ziehen lassen? Der HERR vergelte dir Gutes für das, was du heute an mir getan hast! (Ru 2:12; Pr 25:21; Mt 6:4)21Und nun siehe, ich weiß, dass du gewiss König werden wirst und dass das Königreich Israels in deiner Hand bestehen wird. (1Sa 23:17; Ps 37:4; Ps 37:8; Ps 37:29; Ps 37:34)22So schwöre mir nun bei dem HERRN, dass du meinen Samen[2] nach mir nicht ausrotten und meinen Namen nicht vertilgen wirst aus dem Haus meines Vaters!
