1David left Gath and escaped to the cave of Adullam. When his brothers and his father’s household heard about it, they went down to him there.2All those who were in distress or in debt or discontented gathered round him, and he became their commander. About four hundred men were with him.3From there David went to Mizpah in Moab and said to the king of Moab, ‘Would you let my father and mother come and stay with you until I learn what God will do for me?’4So he left them with the king of Moab, and they stayed with him as long as David was in the stronghold.5But the prophet Gad said to David, ‘Do not stay in the stronghold. Go into the land of Judah.’ So David left and went to the forest of Hereth.
Saul kills the priests of Nob
6Now Saul heard that David and his men had been discovered. And Saul was seated, spear in hand, under the tamarisk tree on the hill at Gibeah, with all his officials standing at his side.7He said to them, ‘Listen, men of Benjamin! Will the son of Jesse give all of you fields and vineyards? Will he make all of you commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds?8Is that why you have all conspired against me? No-one tells me when my son makes a covenant with the son of Jesse. None of you is concerned about me or tells me that my son has incited my servant to lie in wait for me, as he does today.’9But Doeg the Edomite, who was standing with Saul’s officials, said, ‘I saw the son of Jesse come to Ahimelek son of Ahitub at Nob.10Ahimelek enquired of the Lord for him; he also gave him provisions and the sword of Goliath the Philistine.’11Then the king sent for the priest Ahimelek son of Ahitub and all the men of his family, who were the priests at Nob, and they all came to the king.12Saul said, ‘Listen now, son of Ahitub.’ ‘Yes, my lord,’ he answered.13Saul said to him, ‘Why have you conspired against me, you and the son of Jesse, giving him bread and a sword and enquiring of God for him, so that he has rebelled against me and lies in wait for me, as he does today?’14Ahimelek answered the king, ‘Who of all your servants is as loyal as David, the king’s son-in-law, captain of your bodyguard and highly respected in your household?15Was that day the first time I enquired of God for him? Of course not! Let not the king accuse your servant or any of his father’s family, for your servant knows nothing at all about this whole affair.’16But the king said, ‘You shall surely die, Ahimelek, you and your whole family.’17Then the king ordered the guards at his side: ‘Turn and kill the priests of the Lord, because they too have sided with David. They knew he was fleeing, yet they did not tell me.’ But the king’s officials were unwilling to raise a hand to strike the priests of the Lord.18The king then ordered Doeg, ‘You turn and strike down the priests.’ So Doeg the Edomite turned and struck them down. That day he killed eighty-five men who wore the linen ephod.19He also put to the sword Nob, the town of the priests, with its men and women, its children and infants, and its cattle, donkeys and sheep.20But one son of Ahimelek son of Ahitub, named Abiathar, escaped and fled to join David.21He told David that Saul had killed the priests of the Lord.22Then David said to Abiathar, ‘That day, when Doeg the Edomite was there, I knew he would be sure to tell Saul. I am responsible for the death of your whole family.23Stay with me; don’t be afraid. The man who wants to kill you is trying to kill me too. You will be safe with me.’

(Jud 11:3; 1Sa 25:13; Ps 72:12; Mt 9:12; Mt 11:28)3Und David ging von dort nach Mizpe [in] Moab und sprach zum König von Moab: Lass doch meinen Vater und meine Mutter herkommen und bei euch bleiben, bis ich erfahre, was Gott mit mir tun wird! Saul ermordet die Priester des Herrn
6Und als Saul hörte, dass David und die Männer, die bei ihm waren, entdeckt worden seien (Saul aber saß gerade in Gibea unter der Tamariske auf der Anhöhe, den Speer in der Hand, und alle seine Knechte standen vor ihm), (1Sa 14:2; 1Sa 19:9)7da sprach Saul zu seinen Knechten, die vor ihm standen: Hört doch, ihr Benjaminiter: Wird auch der Sohn Isais euch allen Äcker und Weinberge geben? Wird er euch alle zu Obersten über tausend und zu Obersten über hundert machen, (1Sa 8:11; 1Sa 8:14)8dass ihr euch alle gegen mich verschworen habt und niemand es meinen Ohren offenbarte, als mein Sohn einen Bund mit dem Sohn Isais gemacht hat? Und ist niemand unter euch, dem es um meinetwillen leidtat und der es meinen Ohren offenbarte, dass mein eigener Sohn meinen Knecht gegen mich aufgewiegelt hat und mir nachstellt, wie es heute [offenbar] ist? (1Sa 18:3; 1Sa 20:16; 1Sa 20:30)9Da antwortete Doeg, der Edomiter, der neben Sauls Knechten stand, und sprach: Ich sah den Sohn Isais, als er nach Nob zu Achimelech, dem Sohn Achitubs kam. (1Sa 22:8; Ps 119:69; Am 7:10; Lu 23:2; Lu 23:5)14Da antwortete Achimelech dem König und sprach: Und wer ist unter allen deinen Knechten so treu wie David, der dazu noch der Schwiegersohn des Königs ist, der Zutritt zu deinem geheimen Rat hat und in deinem Haus so hoch angesehen ist? (1Sa 18:27; 1Sa 19:4; 1Sa 21:3)15Habe ich denn erst heute angefangen, Gott für ihn zu befragen? Das sei ferne von mir! Der König lege dies weder seinem Knecht noch dem ganzen Haus meines Vaters zur Last; denn dein Knecht hat von alledem nichts gewusst, weder Kleines noch Großes! (Ge 20:4; 1Sa 25:36; 2Sa 15:11; 2Co 1:12; 1Pe 3:16)16Aber der König sprach: Du musst gewisslich sterben, Achimelech, du und das ganze Haus deines Vaters! (De 24:16; Es 3:6; Pr 27:4)17Und der König sprach zu den Läufern, die vor ihm standen: Tretet herzu und tötet die Priester des HERRN! Denn ihre Hand ist auch mit David; und obgleich sie wussten, dass er floh, haben sie es mir doch nicht eröffnet! Aber die Knechte des Königs wollten ihre Hand nicht an die Priester des HERRN legen, um sie zu erschlagen. (De 27:24; 1Sa 22:18; Eze 11:5; Mt 23:34; Joh 16:2)18Da sprach der König zu Doeg: Tritt du herzu und erschlage die Priester! Und Doeg, der Edomiter, trat herzu und fiel über die Priester her und tötete an jenem Tag 85 Männer, die das leinene Ephod trugen. (1Sa 2:31)19Und Nob, die Stadt der Priester, schlug er mit der Schärfe des Schwertes, vom Mann bis zur Frau, vom Kind bis zum Säugling, sowie Rinder, Esel und Schafe, mit der Schärfe des Schwertes. (Jos 6:17; Jos 6:21; 1Sa 15:3; 1Sa 15:9; 1Sa 21:2; 1Sa 22:9; 1Sa 22:11; Isa 10:32; Ho 10:14; Jas 2:13)20Es entkam aber ein Sohn Achimelechs, des Sohnes Achitubs, der hieß Abjatar, und er floh zu David. (1Sa 23:6; 1Sa 30:7; 2Sa 20:25; 1Ki 1:7; 1Ki 1:19; 1Ki 2:26)21Und Abjatar berichtete David, dass Saul die Priester des HERRN niedergemacht habe.22David aber sprach zu Abjatar: Ich wusste wohl an jenem Tag, als Doeg, der Edomiter, dort war, dass er es Saul gewiss sagen werde. Ich bin schuldig an allen Seelen aus dem Haus deines Vaters! (1Sa 21:8; 1Sa 22:9)23Bleibe bei mir und fürchte dich nicht. Denn der, welcher nach meinem Leben trachtet, der trachtet auch nach deinem Leben; doch bei mir bist du gut beschützt! (1Ki 2:26; Joh 17:12)
