1Saul was thirty[1] years old when he became king, and he reigned over Israel for forty-[2] two years. (Ac 13:21)2Saul chose three thousand men from Israel; two thousand were with him at Michmash and in the hill country of Bethel, and a thousand were with Jonathan at Gibeah in Benjamin. The rest of the men he sent back to their homes.3Jonathan attacked the Philistine outpost at Geba, and the Philistines heard about it. Then Saul had the trumpet blown throughout the land and said, ‘Let the Hebrews hear!’4So all Israel heard the news: ‘Saul has attacked the Philistine outpost, and now Israel has become obnoxious to the Philistines.’ And the people were summoned to join Saul at Gilgal.5The Philistines assembled to fight Israel, with three thousand[3] chariots, six thousand charioteers, and soldiers as numerous as the sand on the seashore. They went up and camped at Michmash, east of Beth Aven.6When the Israelites saw that their situation was critical and that their army was hard pressed, they hid in caves and thickets, among the rocks, and in pits and cisterns.7Some Hebrews even crossed the Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead. Saul remained at Gilgal, and all the troops with him were quaking with fear.8He waited for seven days, the time set by Samuel; but Samuel did not come to Gilgal, and Saul’s men began to scatter.9So he said, ‘Bring me the burnt offering and the fellowship offerings.’ And Saul offered up the burnt offering.10Just as he finished making the offering, Samuel arrived, and Saul went out to greet him.11‘What have you done?’ asked Samuel. Saul replied, ‘When I saw that the men were scattering, and that you did not come at the set time, and that the Philistines were assembling at Michmash,12I thought, “Now the Philistines will come down against me at Gilgal, and I have not sought the Lord’s favour.” So I felt compelled to offer the burnt offering.’13‘You have done a foolish thing,’ Samuel said. ‘You have not kept the command the Lord your God gave you; if you had, he would have established your kingdom over Israel for all time.14But now your kingdom will not endure; the Lord has sought out a man after his own heart and appointed him ruler of his people, because you have not kept the Lord’s command.’15Then Samuel left Gilgal[4] and went up to Gibeah in Benjamin, and Saul counted the men who were with him. They numbered about six hundred.
Israel without weapons
16Saul and his son Jonathan and the men with them were staying in Gibeah[5] of Benjamin, while the Philistines camped at Michmash.17Raiding parties went out from the Philistine camp in three detachments. One turned towards Ophrah in the vicinity of Shual,18another towards Beth Horon, and the third towards the borderland overlooking the Valley of Zeboyim facing the wilderness.19Not a blacksmith could be found in the whole land of Israel, because the Philistines had said, ‘Otherwise the Hebrews will make swords or spears!’20So all Israel went down to the Philistines to have their ploughshares, mattocks, axes and sickles[6] sharpened.21The price was two-thirds of a shekel[7] for sharpening ploughshares and mattocks, and a third of a shekel[8] for sharpening forks and axes and for repointing goads.22So on the day of the battle not a soldier with Saul and Jonathan had a sword or spear in his hand; only Saul and his son Jonathan had them.

1Saul war ein Jahr König gewesen, und nachdem er zwei Jahre über Israel regiert hatte, (Ps 65:12; Lu 13:8)2da erwählte sich Saul 3 000 Mann aus Israel, davon waren 2 000 mit Saul in Michmas und auf dem Bergland von Bethel, und 1 000 mit Jonathan in Gibea-Benjamin; das übrige Volk aber ließ er gehen, jeden in sein Zelt. (1Sa 10:5; 1Sa 10:10; 1Sa 10:26; 1Sa 13:5; 1Sa 13:16; 1Sa 13:23; 1Sa 14:5; 1Sa 14:31; Ne 11:31; Isa 10:28)3Und Jonathan schlug den Wachtposten der Philister, der bei Geba war, und die Philister hörten es. Saul aber ließ im ganzen Land das Schopharhorn blasen und sagen: Die Hebräer sollen es hören! (Jos 18:24; Jud 3:27; Jud 6:34; 2Sa 5:25)4Und ganz Israel hörte sagen: Saul hat den Philisterposten geschlagen; auch hat sich Israel bei den Philistern verhasst gemacht! Und das Volk wurde zusammengerufen, um Saul nach Gilgal zu folgen. (Ge 34:30; Ex 5:21; Jos 5:9; 1Sa 10:8; 1Sa 11:14; Zec 11:8)5Die Philister versammelten sich aber, um gegen Israel zu kämpfen: 30 000 Streitwagen, 6 000 Reiter und Kriegsvolk [so zahlreich] wie der Sand am Ufer des Meeres; die zogen herauf und lagerten sich bei Michmas, östlich von Beth-Awen. (Jos 7:2; Jud 7:12; Ps 33:16; Ho 4:15)6Als nun die Männer von Israel sahen, dass sie in Not waren — denn das Volk war bedrängt —, da versteckte sich das Volk in Höhlen und Dickichten, in Felsklüften, Gewölben und Zisternen. (Jud 6:2; Jud 10:9)7Auch gingen [einige] Hebräer über den Jordan in das Land Gad und Gilead. Saul aber war noch in Gilgal; und das ganze Volk hinter ihm war verzagt. (Jos 8:11)8Und er wartete sieben Tage lang, bis zu der von Samuel bestimmten Zeit, aber Samuel kam nicht nach Gilgal. Und das Volk verließ ihn und zerstreute sich. Der HERR hat sich einen Mann nach seinem Herzen ausgesucht; dem hat der HERR geboten, über sein Volk Fürst zu sein, weil du nicht gehalten hast, was dir der HERR gebot! (1Sa 13:13; 1Sa 15:28; 1Sa 16:7; 1Sa 16:12; Re 3:11)15Und Samuel machte sich auf und ging von Gilgal hinauf nach Gibea-Benjamin. Saul aber musterte das Volk, das [noch] bei ihm war, etwa 600 Mann. (1Sa 13:2; 1Sa 14:2)16Und Saul und sein Sohn Jonathan und das Volk, das noch bei ihm war, lagen in Gibea-Benjamin; die Philister aber hatten sich bei Michmas gelagert. (1Sa 13:2; 1Sa 13:3; Ne 11:31)17Und der Verheerungszug zog in drei Abteilungen aus dem Lager der Philister aus; die eine Abteilung nahm den Weg nach Ophra, nach dem Gebiet von Schual hin; (Jos 18:23; Jos 19:3)18die andere Abteilung aber nahm den Weg nach Beth-Horon, und die dritte den Weg zu dem Gebiet, das über das Tal Zeboim hinweg zur Wüste hinunterblickt. (Jos 10:10; Ne 11:34)19Aber im ganzen Land Israel war kein Schmied zu finden, denn die Philister hatten gesagt: Damit sich die Hebräer nicht Schwerter und Speere machen! (Jud 5:8; 2Ki 24:14)20So musste ganz Israel zu den Philistern hinabgehen, wenn jemand seine Pflugschar, seinen Spaten, sein Beil oder seine Sichel zu schärfen hatte, (Ec 10:10; Isa 54:16; Jer 24:1)21wenn die Schneiden an den Pflugscharen, an den Spaten und den Gabeln und den Beilen abgestumpft waren, und um die Ochsenstachel gerade zu richten.22Und so kam es, dass am Tag der Schlacht weder Schwert noch Speer zu finden war in der Hand des ganzen Volkes, das mit Saul und Jonathan war; [nur] für Saul und seinen Sohn Jonathan war etwas vorhanden.
