1After a long time, in the third year, the word of the Lord came to Elijah: ‘Go and present yourself to Ahab, and I will send rain on the land.’2So Elijah went to present himself to Ahab. Now the famine was severe in Samaria,3and Ahab had summoned Obadiah, his palace administrator. (Obadiah was a devout believer in the Lord.4While Jezebel was killing off the Lord’s prophets, Obadiah had taken a hundred prophets and hidden them in two caves, fifty in each, and had supplied them with food and water.)5Ahab had said to Obadiah, ‘Go through the land to all the springs and valleys. Maybe we can find some grass to keep the horses and mules alive so we will not have to kill any of our animals.’6So they divided the land they were to cover, Ahab going in one direction and Obadiah in another.7As Obadiah was walking along, Elijah met him. Obadiah recognised him, bowed down to the ground, and said, ‘Is it really you, my lord Elijah?’8‘Yes,’ he replied. ‘Go tell your master, “Elijah is here.” ’9‘What have I done wrong,’ asked Obadiah, ‘that you are handing your servant over to Ahab to be put to death?10As surely as the Lord your God lives, there is not a nation or kingdom where my master has not sent someone to look for you. And whenever a nation or kingdom claimed you were not there, he made them swear they could not find you.11But now you tell me to go to my master and say, “Elijah is here.”12I don’t know where the Spirit of the Lord may carry you when I leave you. If I go and tell Ahab and he doesn’t find you, he will kill me. Yet I your servant have worshipped the Lord since my youth.13Haven’t you heard, my lord, what I did while Jezebel was killing the prophets of the Lord? I hid a hundred of the Lord’s prophets in two caves, fifty in each, and supplied them with food and water.14And now you tell me to go to my master and say, “Elijah is here.” He will kill me!’15Elijah said, ‘As the Lord Almighty lives, whom I serve, I will surely present myself to Ahab today.’
Elijah on Mount Carmel
16So Obadiah went to meet Ahab and told him, and Ahab went to meet Elijah.17When he saw Elijah, he said to him, ‘Is that you, you troubler of Israel?’18‘I have not made trouble for Israel,’ Elijah replied. ‘But you and your father’s family have. You have abandoned the Lord’s commands and have followed the Baals.19Now summon the people from all over Israel to meet me on Mount Carmel. And bring the four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal and the four hundred prophets of Asherah, who eat at Jezebel’s table.’20So Ahab sent word throughout all Israel and assembled the prophets on Mount Carmel.21Elijah went before the people and said, ‘How long will you waver between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow him; but if Baal is God, follow him.’ But the people said nothing.22Then Elijah said to them, ‘I am the only one of the Lord’s prophets left, but Baal has four hundred and fifty prophets.23Get two bulls for us. Let Baal’s prophets choose one for themselves, and let them cut it into pieces and put it on the wood but not set fire to it. I will prepare the other bull and put it on the wood but not set fire to it.24Then you call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the Lord. The god who answers by fire – he is God.’ Then all the people said, ‘What you say is good.’25Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, ‘Choose one of the bulls and prepare it first, since there are so many of you. Call on the name of your god, but do not light the fire.’26So they took the bull that was given to them and prepared it. Then they called on the name of Baal from morning till noon. ‘Baal, answer us!’ they shouted. But there was no response; no-one answered. And they danced around the altar they had made.27At noon Elijah began to taunt them. ‘Shout louder!’ he said. ‘Surely he is a god! Perhaps he is deep in thought, or busy, or travelling. Maybe he is sleeping and must be awakened.’28So they shouted louder and slashed themselves with swords and spears, as was their custom, until their blood flowed.29Midday passed, and they continued their frantic prophesying until the time for the evening sacrifice. But there was no response, no-one answered, no-one paid attention.30Then Elijah said to all the people, ‘Come here to me.’ They came to him, and he repaired the altar of the Lord, which had been torn down.31Elijah took twelve stones, one for each of the tribes descended from Jacob, to whom the word of the Lord had come, saying, ‘Your name shall be Israel.’32With the stones he built an altar in the name of the Lord, and he dug a trench round it large enough to hold two seahs[1] of seed.33He arranged the wood, cut the bull into pieces and laid it on the wood. Then he said to them, ‘Fill four large jars with water and pour it on the offering and on the wood.’34‘Do it again,’ he said, and they did it again. ‘Do it a third time,’ he ordered, and they did it the third time.35The water ran down around the altar and even filled the trench.36At the time of sacrifice, the prophet Elijah stepped forward and prayed: ‘Lord, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, let it be known today that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant and have done all these things at your command.37Answer me, Lord, answer me, so these people will know that you, Lord, are God, and that you are turning their hearts back again.’38Then the fire of the Lord fell and burned up the sacrifice, the wood, the stones and the soil, and also licked up the water in the trench.39When all the people saw this, they fell prostrate and cried, ‘The Lord – he is God! The Lord – he is God!’40Then Elijah commanded them, ‘Seize the prophets of Baal. Don’t let anyone get away!’ They seized them, and Elijah had them brought down to the Kishon Valley and slaughtered there.41And Elijah said to Ahab, ‘Go, eat and drink, for there is the sound of a heavy rain.’42So Ahab went off to eat and drink, but Elijah climbed to the top of Carmel, bent down to the ground and put his face between his knees.43‘Go and look towards the sea,’ he told his servant. And he went up and looked. ‘There is nothing there,’ he said. Seven times Elijah said, ‘Go back.’44The seventh time the servant reported, ‘A cloud as small as a man’s hand is rising from the sea.’ So Elijah said, ‘Go and tell Ahab, “Hitch up your chariot and go down before the rain stops you.” ’45Meanwhile, the sky grew black with clouds, the wind rose, a heavy rainstorm came on and Ahab rode off to Jezreel.46The power of the Lord came on Elijah and, tucking his cloak into his belt, he ran ahead of Ahab all the way to Jezreel.

Elia und Obadja

(Ps 147:8; Jer 14:22; Lu 4:25; Jas 5:17)2Und Elia ging hin, um sich Ahab zu zeigen. Es war aber eine große Hungersnot in Samaria. (Ru 1:1; 2Ki 4:38; 2Ki 8:1; 2Ki 25:3; Ps 56:5; Ps 105:16)3Und Ahab rief Obadja, seinen Verwalter. Obadja aber fürchtete den HERRN sehr. (1Ki 18:12; Ne 5:15; Ne 7:2; Ps 112:1; Ec 7:18)4Denn es geschah, als Isebel die Propheten des HERRN ausrottete, da nahm Obadja 100 Propheten und verbarg sie in Höhlen, hier 50 und dort 50, und versorgte sie mit Brot und Wasser. (2Ki 9:7; Mt 10:41; Ro 12:13; Ga 6:10)5So sprach nun Ahab zu Obadja: Zieh durch das Land, zu allen Wasserquellen und zu allen Bächen[1]; vielleicht finden wir Gras, um die Pferde und Maultiere am Leben zu erhalten, sodass wir nichts von dem Vieh umkommen lassen müssen! (Ps 104:14; Jer 14:5; Joe 1:18; Joe 2:22)6Und sie teilten das Land unter sich auf, um es zu durchziehen. Ahab zog allein auf einem Weg, und Obadja auch allein auf einem anderen Weg. (Jer 14:3)7Als nun Obadja auf dem Weg war, siehe, da begegnete ihm Elia. Und als er ihn erkannte, fiel er auf sein Angesicht und sprach: Bist du es, mein Herr Elia? (Ge 18:2; Ge 18:12; Ge 44:16; Ge 50:18; 1Ki 11:29; Isa 60:14; 1Pe 3:8)8Er sprach zu ihm: Ich bin’s! Geh hin und sage deinem Herrn: Siehe, Elia ist hier! (1Ki 18:3; Ro 13:7; 1Pe 2:17)9Er aber sprach: Was habe ich gesündigt, dass du deinen Knecht in die Hand Ahabs geben willst, damit er mich tötet? (Ex 5:21; 1Ki 17:18; 1Ki 18:12)10So wahr der HERR, dein Gott, lebt, es gibt kein Volk, noch Königreich, in das mein Herr nicht gesandt hätte, um dich zu suchen. Und wenn sie sagten: »Er ist nicht hier«, so nahm er einen Eid von jenem Königreich und von jenem Volk, dass man dich nicht gefunden habe. (Jer 26:20; Jer 36:26; Ho 7:15; Am 4:6)11Und du sprichst nun: Geh hin, sage deinem Herrn: Siehe, Elia ist hier! (1Ki 18:8; 1Ki 18:14)12Wenn ich von dir weggehe, dann könnte es geschehen, dass dich der Geist des HERRN hinwegnimmt, ich weiß nicht wohin; und wenn ich dann komme und es Ahab berichte, und er findet dich nicht, so wird er mich töten; und dein Knecht fürchtet doch den HERRN von Jugend auf! Elia und die Baalspropheten auf dem Berg Karmel
16Da ging Obadja hin, Ahab entgegen, und berichtete es ihm; Ahab aber kam Elia entgegen. (1Ki 18:8)17Und als Ahab den Elia sah, sprach Ahab zu ihm: Bist du da, der Israel ins Unglück bringt? (Am 7:10; Lu 23:2; Ac 16:20; Ac 17:6)18Er aber sprach: Nicht ich bringe Israel ins Unglück, sondern du und das Haus deines Vaters, weil ihr die Gebote des HERRN verlassen habt und du den Baalen nachgefolgt bist! (2Ch 28:19; Jer 2:19)19Wohlan, so sende nun hin und versammle zu mir ganz Israel auf den Berg Karmel, dazu die 450 Propheten des Baal und die 400 Propheten der Aschera, die am Tisch der Isebel essen! (Jos 19:26; 1Ki 16:32; Jer 46:18)20So sandte Ahab Boten zu allen Kindern Israels und versammelte die Propheten auf dem Berg Karmel. (1Ki 22:6)21Da trat Elia vor das ganze Volk und sprach: Wie lange wollt ihr auf beiden Seiten hinken? Ist der HERR Gott, so folgt ihm nach, ist es aber Baal, so folgt ihm! Und das Volk erwiderte ihm kein Wort. (Jos 24:15; 2Ki 17:41; Zep 1:5; Mt 6:24; 2Co 6:14; Jas 4:4; Re 3:15)22Da sprach Elia zum Volk: Ich bin allein übrig geblieben als Prophet des HERRN, die Propheten Baals aber sind 450 Mann. (1Ki 18:19; 1Ki 19:10; 1Ki 19:14; Ro 11:3)23So gebt uns nun zwei Jungstiere, und lasst sie den einen Jungstier erwählen und ihn in Stücke zerteilen und auf das Holz legen und kein Feuer daran legen; so will ich den anderen Jungstier zubereiten und auf das Holz legen und auch kein Feuer daran legen. (1Ki 18:26; 1Ki 18:33)24Dann sollt ihr den Namen eures Gottes anrufen, und ich will den Namen des HERRN anrufen. Und der Gott, der mit Feuer antworten wird, der sei der [wahre] Gott! Da antwortete das ganze Volk und sprach: Das Wort ist gut! (Le 9:24; 1Ki 18:38; 1Ch 21:26; 2Ch 7:1)25Und Elia sprach zu den Propheten Baals: Erwählt euch den einen Jungstier und bereitet ihn zuerst zu, denn ihr seid viele, und ruft den Namen eures Gottes an, aber legt kein Feuer daran! (1Ki 22:22; 2Ki 10:19; 2Pe 2:1)26Und sie nahmen den Jungstier, den man ihnen gab, und bereiteten ihn zu; und sie riefen den Namen Baals an vom Morgen bis zum Mittag und sprachen: Baal, erhöre uns! Aber da war keine Stimme noch Antwort. Und sie hüpften um den Altar, den man gemacht hatte. (Ps 135:16; Isa 46:7; Jer 10:5; 1Co 8:4)27Als es nun Mittag war, spottete Elia über sie und sprach: Ruft laut! denn er ist ja ein Gott; vielleicht denkt er nach oder er ist beiseitegegangen oder ist auf Reisen, oder er schläft vielleicht und wird aufwachen! (Ps 121:4; Isa 41:23; Isa 45:20)28Und sie riefen laut und machten sich Einschnitte nach ihrer Weise mit Schwertern und Spießen, bis das Blut an ihnen herabfloss. (Le 19:28; Ro 12:1)29Als aber der Mittag vergangen war, weissagten sie, bis es Zeit war, das Speisopfer darzubringen; aber da war keine Stimme noch Antwort noch Aufhorchen. (Ex 29:41; 1Ki 18:26)30Da sprach Elia zu dem ganzen Volk: Tretet heran zu mir! Als nun das ganze Volk zu ihm trat, stellte er den Altar des HERRN, der niedergerissen war, wieder her. (1Ki 19:10; 1Ki 19:14; 2Ch 33:16; Ro 11:3)31Und Elia nahm zwölf Steine, nach der Zahl der Stämme der Söhne Jakobs, an den das Wort des HERRN ergangen war: »Du sollst Israel heißen!« (Ge 32:28; Ge 35:10; Ex 24:4; Jos 4:5)32Und er baute aus den Steinen einen Altar im Namen des HERRN und machte um den Altar her einen Graben so breit wie für zwei Kornmaß Aussaat; (Ex 20:24; Jud 6:26; 1Sa 7:17)33und er richtete das Holz zu und zerteilte den Jungstier in Stücke und legte ihn auf das Holz, (Le 1:6)34und er sprach: Füllt vier Krüge mit Wasser und gießt es auf das Brandopfer und auf das Holz! Und er sprach: Tut es noch einmal! Und sie taten es noch einmal. Und er sprach: Tut es zum dritten Mal! Und sie taten es zum dritten Mal. (Nu 24:10; Da 6:11; Da 6:14; Ac 10:16; Ac 11:10)35Und das Wasser lief rings um den Altar, und auch den Graben füllte er mit Wasser. (1Ki 18:38)36Und es geschah um die Zeit, da man das Speisopfer darbringt, da trat der Prophet Elia herzu und sprach: O HERR, du Gott Abrahams, Isaaks und Israels, lass [sie] heute erkennen, dass du Gott in Israel bist und ich dein Knecht, und dass ich dies alles nach deinem Wort getan habe! (Ex 3:6; Nu 16:28; 1Sa 17:46; 1Ki 18:29; 2Ki 19:19; Ps 83:19; Ps 115:2; Eze 36:23; Mt 22:32)37Erhöre mich, o HERR, erhöre mich, damit dieses Volk erkennt, dass du, HERR, der [wahre] Gott bist, und damit du ihr Herz zur Umkehr bringst! (1Ki 18:24; Isa 37:20; Mal 3:23; Lu 1:16)38Da fiel das Feuer des HERRN herab und verzehrte das Brandopfer und das Holz und die Steine und die Erde; und es leckte das Wasser auf im Graben. (Le 9:24; Jud 6:21; 1Ch 21:26; 2Ch 7:1)39Als das ganze Volk dies sah, da fielen sie auf ihr Angesicht und sprachen: Der HERR ist Gott! Der HERR ist Gott! (Ps 22:30; Isa 45:23; Joh 2:23; Php 2:9)40Elia aber sprach zu ihnen: Fangt die Propheten Baals, dass keiner von ihnen entkommt! Und sie fingen sie. Und Elia führte sie hinab an den Bach Kison und schlachtete sie dort. (De 13:7; De 18:20; 2Ki 10:25)41Und Elia sprach zu Ahab: Zieh hinauf, iss und trink, denn es rauscht, als wolle es reichlich regnen! (1Ki 17:1; 1Ki 18:1)42Und als Ahab hinaufzog, um zu essen und zu trinken, ging Elia auf den Gipfel des Karmel und beugte sich zur Erde und legte sein Angesicht zwischen seine Knie; (Jas 5:17)43und er sprach zu seinem Burschen: Geh doch hinauf und schaue zum Meer hin! Da ging er hinauf und schaute hin und sprach: Es ist nichts da! Er sprach: Geh wieder hin! So geschah es siebenmal. (Jos 6:15; 2Ki 5:10; Hab 2:1; Mt 18:21; Lu 18:1)44Und beim siebten Mal sprach er: Siehe, es steigt eine kleine Wolke aus dem Meer auf, wie die Hand eines Mannes! Da sprach er: Geh hinauf und sage zu Ahab: Spanne an und fahre hinab, damit dich der Regen nicht zurückhält! (1Sa 6:7; 1Sa 6:10; Job 8:7; Mic 1:13; Zec 4:10)45Und es geschah unterdessen, da wurde der Himmel schwarz von Wolken und Wind, und es kam ein gewaltiger Regen. Ahab aber bestieg den Wagen und fuhr nach Jesreel. (Jos 19:18; 1Sa 12:18; 1Ki 21:1; 1Ki 21:23; Ps 65:6; Ps 65:10; Ps 68:10)46Und die Hand des HERRN kam über Elia, und er gürtete seine Lenden und lief vor Ahab her bis nach Jesreel.
