The seals

1 I watched as the Lamb opened the first of the seven seals. Then I heard one of the four living creatures say in a voice like thunder, ‘Come!’ 2 I looked, and there before me was a white horse! Its rider held a bow, and he was given a crown, and he rode out as a conqueror bent on conquest. 3 When the Lamb opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature say, ‘Come!’ 4 Then another horse came out, a fiery red one. Its rider was given power to take peace from the earth and to make people kill each other. To him was given a large sword. 5 When the Lamb opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, ‘Come!’ I looked, and there before me was a black horse! Its rider was holding a pair of scales in his hand. 6 Then I heard what sounded like a voice among the four living creatures, saying, ‘A kilogram of wheat for a day’s wages,^[1] and three kilograms of barley for a day’s wages,^[2] and do not damage the oil and the wine!’ 7 When the Lamb opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature say, ‘Come!’ 8 I looked, and there before me was a pale horse! Its rider was named Death, and Hades was following close behind him. They were given power over a quarter of the earth to kill by sword, famine and plague, and by the wild beasts of the earth. 9 When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain because of the word of God and the testimony they had maintained. 10 They called out in a loud voice, ‘How long, Sovereign Lord, holy and true, until you judge the inhabitants of the earth and avenge our blood?’ 11 Then each of them was given a white robe, and they were told to wait a little longer, until the full number of their fellow servants, their brothers and sisters,^[3] were killed just as they had been. 12 I watched as he opened the sixth seal. There was a great earthquake. The sun turned black like sackcloth made of goat hair, the whole moon turned blood red, 13 and the stars in the sky fell to earth, as figs drop from a fig-tree when shaken by a strong wind. 14 The heavens receded like a scroll being rolled up, and every mountain and island was removed from its place. 15 Then the kings of the earth, the princes, the generals, the rich, the mighty, and everyone else, both slave and free, hid in caves and among the rocks of the mountains. 16 They called to the mountains and the rocks, ‘Fall on us and hide us^[4] from the face of him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb! (Ho 10:8) 17 For the great day of their^[5] wrath has come, and who can withstand it?’

برّه مهرها را باز میكند

1 همچنانكه محو تماشا بودم، «برّه» نخستين مهر را گشود. ناگاه يكی از آن چهار موجود زنده، با صدايی همچون غرش رعد گفت: «بيا!» 2 نگاه كردم و اسبی سفيد ديدم. سوار بر اسب، كسی را ديدم كه كمانی در دست و تاجی بر سر داشت. او اسب را به جلو میراند تا در نبردهای بسيار، پيروز شود و فاتح جنگ باشد. 3 سپس«برّه» مهر دوم را باز كرد. آنگاه شنيدم كه موجود زندهٔ دوم گفت: «بيا!» 4 اين بار، اسبی سرخ پديدار شد. به سوار آن شمشيری داده شده بود تا قادر باشد صلح و سلامتی را از زمين بردارد و به جای آن هرج و مرج ايجاد كند. در نتيجه، جنگ و خونريزی در همه جا آغاز شد. 5 چون«برّه» مهر سوم را گشود، شنيدم كه موجود زندهٔ سوم گفت: «بيا!» آنگاه اسب سياهی را ديدم كه سوارش ترازويی در دست داشت. 6 سپس از ميان چهار موجود زنده، صدايی به گوش رسيد كه میگفت: «يک قرص نان گندم، يا يک كيلو آرد جو، به قيمت مزد روزانهٔ يک كارگر باشد. اما به روغن زيتون و شراب آسيبی نرسان!» 7 چون«برّه» مهر چهارم را گشود، صدای موجود زندهٔ چهارم را شنيدم كه گفت: «بيا!» 8 ناگاه اسب رنگ پريدهای ظاهر شد كه سوارش«مرگ» نام داشت. به دنبال او، اسب ديگری میآمد كه نام سوارش«دنيای مردگان» بود. به آن دو، اختيار و قدرت داده شد تا يک چهارم زمين را بوسيلهٔ جنگ، قحطی، بيماری و جانوران وحشی نابود كنند. 9 وقتی مهر پنجم را باز كرد، قربانگاهی ظاهر شد. زير قربانگاه، روحهای كسانی را ديدم كه برای موعظهٔ كلام خدا و شهادت راستين خود شهيد شده بودند. 10 ايشان با صدايی بلند به خداوند میگفتند: «ای خداوند پاک و حق، تا به كی بر ساكنان زمين داوری نمیكنی و انتقام خون ما را از آنان نمیگيری؟» 11 سپس به هر يک از ايشان، ردايی سفيد دادند و گفتند كه كمی ديگر نيز استراحت كنند تا همقطارانشان كه بايد مانند ايشان به خاطر خدمت به عيسی مسيح شهيد گردند، به جمع آنان بپيوندند. 12 آنگاه«بره» مهر ششم را گشود. ناگهان زلزلهٔ شديدی رخ داد و خورشيد مانند پارچهای سياه، تيره و تار گشت و ماه به رنگ خون درآمد. 13 سپس ديدم كه ستارگان آسمان بر زمين میريزند، درست مانند انجيرهای نارس كه در اثر باد شديد، از درخت كنده شده، بر زمين میافتند. 14 آسمان نيز مانند يک طومار به هم پيچيد و ناپديد گشت و تمام کوهها و جزيرهها تكان خورده، از جای خود منتقل شدند. 15 پادشاهان زمين و رهبران جهان، فرمانداران و ثروتمندان، كوچک و بزرگ، برده و آزاد، همه خود را در غارها و زير تخته سنگهای کوهها پنهان كردند. 16 ايشان به کوهها و صخرهها التماس كرده، میگفتند: «ای کوهها و ای صخرهها، بر ما بيفتيد و ما را از روی آنكه بر تخت نشسته و از خشم بره پنهان كنيد. 17 زيرا روز عظيم خشم آنان فرا رسيده است. پس كيست كه تاب مقاومت داشته باشد؟»
