John the Baptist beheaded

1 At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the reports about Jesus, 2 and he said to his attendants, ‘This is John the Baptist; he has risen from the dead! That is why miraculous powers are at work in him.’ 3 Now Herod had arrested John and bound him and put him in prison because of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, 4 for John had been saying to him: ‘It is not lawful for you to have her.’ 5 Herod wanted to kill John, but he was afraid of the people, because they considered John a prophet. 6 On Herod’s birthday the daughter of Herodias danced for the guests and pleased Herod so much 7 that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked. 8 Prompted by her mother, she said, ‘Give me here on a dish the head of John the Baptist.’ 9 The king was distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests, he ordered that her request be granted 10 and had John beheaded in the prison. 11 His head was brought in on a dish and given to the girl, who carried it to her mother. 12 John’s disciples came and took his body and buried it. Then they went and told Jesus.

Jesus feeds the five thousand

13 When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place. Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on foot from the towns. 14 When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed those who were ill. 15 As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, ‘This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. Send the crowds away, so that they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food.’ 16 Jesus replied, ‘They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.’ 17 ‘We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish,’ they answered. 18 ‘Bring them here to me,’ he said. 19 And he told the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. 20 They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. 21 The number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and children.

Jesus walks on the water

22 Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. 23 After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. Later that night, he was there alone, 24 and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it. 25 Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. ‘It’s a ghost,’ they said, and cried out in fear. 27 But Jesus immediately said to them: ‘Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.’ 28 ‘Lord, if it’s you,’ Peter replied, ‘tell me to come to you on the water.’ 29 ‘Come,’ he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came towards Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, ‘Lord, save me!’ 31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. ‘You of little faith,’ he said, ‘why did you doubt?’ 32 And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. 33 Then those who were in the boat worshipped him, saying, ‘Truly you are the Son of God.’ 34 When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret. 35 And when the men of that place recognised Jesus, they sent word to all the surrounding country. People brought all who were ill to him 36 and begged him to let those who were ill just touch the edge of his cloak, and all who touched it were healed.

وجدان ناراحت هيروديس پادشاه

1 وقتی«هيروديس» پادشاه از معجزات عيسی اطلاع حاصل كرد، 2 به افراد خود گفت: «بیشک، اين همان يحيای پيامبر است كه زنده شده، و به همين دليل است كه میتواند معجزه كند.» 3 زيرا هيروديس، بنا به اصرار همسرش«هيروديا» كه قبلاً زن برادرش«فيليپ» بود، يحيی را گرفته و در زندان به زنجير كشيده بود، 4 به اين علت كه يحيی به هيروديس گفته بود كه ازدواج با زن برادرش خطاست. 5 هيروديس نيز قصد داشت يحيی را بكشد ولی از شورش مردم میترسيد، چون او را نبی میدانستند. 6 اما در جشن ميلاد هيروديس، دختر هيروديا رقصيد و رقص او هيروديس را بسيار شاد كرد، 7 به طوری که برای او قسم خورد كه هر چه بخواهد برايش انجام دهد. 8 دختر هيروديا نيز به توصيهٔ مادرش، درخواست كرد كه سر يحيای تعميددهنده در يک سينی به او داده شود. 9 پادشاه از اين تقاضا سخت رنجيدهخاطر گشت اما چون در حضور همه قسم خورده بود، دستور داد تقاضای او را بجا آورند. 10 پس در زندان، سر يحيی را از تن جدا كرده، 11 در يک سينی آوردند و تقديم دختر كردند، دختر نيز آن را نزد مادرش برد. 12 آنگاه شاگردان يحيی آمدند و بدن او را برده، به خاک سپردند، و پيش عيسی رفته، جريان را به او اطلاع دادند.

عيسی جماعت گرسنه را سير میكند

13 وقتی عيسی از اين امر اطلاع يافت، به تنهايی سوار قايق شد و به جای دورافتادهای رفت. اما مردم ديدند كه عيسی كجا میرود. پس از دهات خود به راه افتاده، از راه خشكی به دنبال او رفتند. 14 وقتی عيسی از بيابان باز میگشت، با ازدحام جمعيتی روبرو شد كه منتظرش بودند؛ و با ديدن ايشان دلش سوخت و بيمارانی را كه در بين جمعيت بودند شفا بخشيد. 15 عصر آن روز، شاگردان نزد او آمده، گفتند: «اكنون دير وقت است و در اين بيابان خوراک يافت نمیشود. پس اين مردم را مرخص فرما تا به دهات رفته، برای خود نان بخرند.» 16 عيسی جواب داد: «لازم نيست بروند. شما به ايشان خوراک دهيد.» 17 با تعجب گفتند: «چگونه ممكن است؟ ما بهجز پنج نان و دو ماهی، چيز ديگری نداريم!» 18 عيسی فرمود: «آنها را به من بدهيد!» 19 سپس به مردم گفت كه بر روی سبزه بنشينند، و نان و ماهی را برداشت، به آسمان نگاه كرد و از خداوند خواست تا آن را بركت دهد. سپس نانها را تكهتكه كرد و به شاگردانش داد تا به مردم بدهند. 20 همه خوردند و سير شدند. وقتی خُرده نانها را جمع كردند، دوازده سبد پر شد. 21 فقط تعداد مردها در ميان آن جماعت، پنج هزار نفر بود.

عيسی روی درياچه راه میرود

22 بلافاصله پس از آن، عيسی به شاگردانش فرمود كه سوار قايق شده، به آن طرف درياچه بروند. اما او خود همانجا ماند تا مردم را روانهٔ خانههايشان نمايد. 23-24 پس از آن، عيسی بر فراز تپهای رفت تا به دعا بپردازد. شب فرا رسيد و شاگردانش در درياچه دچار زحمت شدند، زيرا بادِ مخالف تند بود و قايق پيش نمیرفت. 25 اما نزديک ساعت چهار صبح، عيسی در حالی كه روی آب راه میرفت، به آنها نزديک شد. 26 ايشان از ترس فرياد برآوردند، چون گمان كردند كه روحی میبينند. 27 اما عيسی بیدرنگ ايشان را صدا زده، گفت: «نترسيد، من هستم!» 28 پطرس جواب داد: «ای سَروَرم، اگر حقيقتاً شماييد، دستور فرماييد من هم روی آب راه بروم و پيش شما بيايم.» 29 عيسی فرمود: «بسيار خوب، بيا!» پطرس از قايق بيرون آمد و روی آب راه افتاده، به طرف عيسی رفت. 30 اما وقتی به اطراف نگاه كرد و موجهای بلند را ديد، به وحشت افتاد و شروع كرد به فرو رفتن در آب. پس فرياد زد: «سَروَرَم، نجاتم ده!» 31 عيسی فوری دست خود را دراز كرد و او را از آب بيرون كشيد و فرمود: «ای كمايمان، چرا شک كردی؟» 32 وقتی سوار قايق شدند، باد قطع شد. 33 سايرين كه حيرتزده بودند، او را پرستش كرده، به پای او افتادند و گفتند: «واقعاً كه شما فرزند خداييد.» 34 در ساحل«جنيسارت»، وقتی از قايق پياده شدند، 35 خبر ورود ايشان به سرعت در شهر پيچيد، و ديری نگذشت كه اهالی آن منطقه به تمام آن نواحی خبر فرستادند تا بيمارانشان را نزد عيسی آورند تا شفا بيابند. 36 بيماران از او التماس كردند كه اجازه دهد فقط دست به دامن ردايش بزنند؛ و دست هر كس به دامن او میرسيد، شفا میيافت.
