1‘I will send my messenger, who will prepare the way before me. Then suddenly the Lord you are seeking will come to his temple; the messenger of the covenant, whom you desire, will come,’ says the Lord Almighty.2But who can endure the day of his coming? Who can stand when he appears? For he will be like a refiner’s fire or a launderer’s soap.3He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver; he will purify the Levites and refine them like gold and silver. Then the Lord will have men who will bring offerings in righteousness,4and the offerings of Judah and Jerusalem will be acceptable to the Lord, as in days gone by, as in former years.5‘So I will come to put you on trial. I will be quick to testify against sorcerers, adulterers and perjurers, against those who defraud labourers of their wages, who oppress the widows and the fatherless, and deprive the foreigners among you of justice, but do not fear me,’ says the Lord Almighty.
Breaking covenant by withholding tithes
6‘I the Lord do not change. So you, the descendants of Jacob, are not destroyed.7Ever since the time of your ancestors you have turned away from my decrees and have not kept them. Return to me, and I will return to you,’ says the Lord Almighty. ‘But you ask, “How are we to return?”8‘Will a mere mortal rob God? Yet you rob me. ‘But you ask, “How are we robbing you?” ‘In tithes and offerings.9You are under a curse – your whole nation – because you are robbing me.10Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,’ says the Lord Almighty, ‘and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.11I will prevent pests from devouring your crops, and the vines in your fields will not drop their fruit before it is ripe,’ says the Lord Almighty.12‘Then all the nations will call you blessed, for yours will be a delightful land,’ says the Lord Almighty.
Israel speaks arrogantly against God
13‘You have spoken arrogantly against me,’ says the Lord. ‘Yet you ask, “What have we said against you?”14‘You have said, “It is futile to serve God. What do we gain by carrying out his requirements and going about like mourners before the Lord Almighty?15But now we call the arrogant blessed. Certainly evildoers prosper, and even when they put God to the test, they get away with it.” ’
The faithful remnant
16Then those who feared the Lord talked with each other, and the Lord listened and heard. A scroll of remembrance was written in his presence concerning those who feared the Lord and honoured his name.17‘On the day when I act,’ says the Lord Almighty, ‘they will be my treasured possession. I will spare them, just as a father has compassion and spares his son who serves him.18And you will again see the distinction between the righteous and the wicked, between those who serve God and those who do not.

1خداوند قادر متعال میفرمايد: «قاصد خود را میفرستم تا راه را برای من آماده كند. سپس خداوندی كه انتظارش را میكشيد ناگهان به خانهٔ خود خواهد آمد. آن رسولی كه شما مشتاق ديدارش هستيد خواهد آمد و عهد مرا به شما اعلان خواهد كرد.»2اما كيست كه يارای ايستادن در مقابل او را داشته باشد؟ و كيست كه بتواند آمدنش را تحمل كند؟ زيرا او همچون آتش سوزانی است كه فلز را تصفيه میكند و مثل صابونی است كه كثيفترين لباسها را پاک میكند.3او مانند كسی كه فلز را تصفيه میكند كاهنان را همچون طلا و نقره پاک خواهد كرد تا آنها با دل پاک هدايا را به خداوند تقديم كنند.4آنگاه مثل گذشته، خداوند از هدايايی كه مردم يهودا و اورشليم برايش میآورند خشنود خواهد شد.5خداوند قادر متعال میفرمايد: «من برای داوری به ميان شما خواهم آمد و بر ضد بدكاران شهادت خواهم داد يعنی بر ضد جادوگران، زناكاران و دروغگويان، بر ضد تمام كسانی كه حق كارگران خود را نمیدهند، و كسانی كه به بيوهزنان، يتيمان و غريبان ظلم میكنند و از من نمیترسند.»
دزدی از خدا
6خداوند قادر متعال میفرمايد: «من خداوندی تغييرناپذير هستم. به همين دليل است كه شما، ای نسل يعقوب، تا به حال از بين نرفتهايد.7هر چند شما هم مثل پدران خود از احكام من سرپيچی نموده، آنها را به جا نياوردهايد، ولی اينک به سوی من بازگشت نماييد و من شما را خواهم بخشيد. میگوييد: مگر ما چه كردهايم كه بايد بازگشت كنيم؟8«آيا كسی از خدا دزدی میكند؟ ولی شما از من دزدی كردهايد! «میپرسيد: مقصودت چيست؟ «مقصودم دهيکها و هداياست.9ای قوم اسرائيل، همهٔ شما ملعون هستيد، زيرا از مال من میدزديد.10ده يک دارايی خود را به طور كامل به خانهٔ من بياوريد تا خوراک كافی در آنجا باشد. به اين ترتيب مرا امتحان كنيد و ببينيد چگونه روزنههای آسمان را باز میكنم و شما را از بركات خود لبريز میسازم!11من حشرات و آفات را از زمين شما دور میكنم تا محصولتان از بين نرود و تاكستانهايتان ميوهٔ فراوان بدهند.12همهٔ قومها شما را خوشبخت خواهند خواند، زيرا صاحب سرزمينی با صفا خواهيد بود.»13خداوند میفرمايد كه شما بر ضد او سخنان دروغ گفتهايد؛ ولی شما به او میگوييد: «بر ضد تو چه گفتهايم؟»14-15گفتهايد: «عبادت خدا و اطاعت از او بیفايده است. چرا برای اعمالمان بايد به حضور خداوند برويم و اظهار پشيمانی كنيم؟ ببينيد چطور آدمهای متكبر خوشبخت زندگی میكنند و بدكاران كامياب میشوند و با وجود اينكه مرتكب اعمال زشت میشوند خدا آنها را مجازات نمیكند!»16آنگاه كسانی كه ترس خداوند را در دل داشتند، با يكديگر به گفتگو نشستند و خداوند به گفتگوی آنان گوش داد و سخنان ايشان را شنيد. سپس در كتابی كه در حضور خداوند بود اسامی كسانی كه ترس خداوند را در دل داشتند و نام او را گرامی میداشتند، نوشته شد.17خداوند قادر متعال میفرمايد: «در آن روزی كه من تعيين كردهام، آنها قوم خاص من خواهند بود و همانطور كه يک پدر، پسر مطيع خود را میبخشد، من نيز ايشان را خواهم بخشيد.18آنگاه خواهيد ديد كه خدا با اشخاص خوب و بد، با خدمتگزاران خود و آنانی كه او را خدمت نمیكنند، چگونه رفتار میكند.»
