1Again the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the Lord, so the Lord delivered them into the hands of the Philistines for forty years.2A certain man of Zorah, named Manoah, from the clan of the Danites, had a wife who was childless, unable to give birth.3The angel of the Lord appeared to her and said, ‘You are barren and childless, but you are going to become pregnant and give birth to a son.4Now see to it that you drink no wine or other fermented drink and that you do not eat anything unclean.5You will become pregnant and have a son whose head is never to be touched by a razor because the boy is to be a Nazirite, dedicated to God from the womb. He will take the lead in delivering Israel from the hands of the Philistines.’6Then the woman went to her husband and told him, ‘A man of God came to me. He looked like an angel of God, very awesome. I didn’t ask him where he came from, and he didn’t tell me his name.7But he said to me, “You will become pregnant and have a son. Now then, drink no wine or other fermented drink and do not eat anything unclean, because the boy will be a Nazirite of God from the womb until the day of his death.” ’8Then Manoah prayed to the Lord: ‘Pardon your servant, Lord. I beg you to let the man of God you sent to us come again to teach us how to bring up the boy who is to be born.’9God heard Manoah, and the angel of God came again to the woman while she was out in the field; but her husband Manoah was not with her.10The woman hurried to tell her husband, ‘He’s here! The man who appeared to me the other day!’11Manoah got up and followed his wife. When he came to the man, he said, ‘Are you the man who talked to my wife?’ ‘I am,’ he said.12So Manoah asked him, ‘When your words are fulfilled, what is to be the rule that governs the boy’s life and work?’13The angel of the Lord answered, ‘Your wife must do all that I have told her.14She must not eat anything that comes from the grapevine, nor drink any wine or other fermented drink nor eat anything unclean. She must do everything I have commanded her.’15Manoah said to the angel of the Lord, ‘We would like you to stay until we prepare a young goat for you.’16The angel of the Lord replied, ‘Even though you detain me, I will not eat any of your food. But if you prepare a burnt offering, offer it to the Lord.’ (Manoah did not realise that it was the angel of the Lord.)17Then Manoah enquired of the angel of the Lord, ‘What is your name, so that we may honour you when your word comes true?’18He replied, ‘Why do you ask my name? It is beyond understanding.[1]’19Then Manoah took a young goat, together with the grain offering, and sacrificed it on a rock to the Lord. And the Lord did an amazing thing while Manoah and his wife watched:20as the flame blazed up from the altar towards heaven, the angel of the Lord ascended in the flame. Seeing this, Manoah and his wife fell with their faces to the ground.21When the angel of the Lord did not show himself again to Manoah and his wife, Manoah realised that it was the angel of the Lord.22‘We are doomed to die!’ he said to his wife. ‘We have seen God!’23But his wife answered, ‘If the Lord had meant to kill us, he would not have accepted a burnt offering and grain offering from our hands, nor shown us all these things or now told us this.’24The woman gave birth to a boy and named him Samson. He grew and the Lord blessed him,25and the Spirit of the Lord began to stir him while he was in Mahaneh Dan, between Zorah and Eshtaol.

1قوم اسرائيل بار ديگر نسبت به خداوند گناه ورزيدند. بنابراين خداوند ايشان را مدت چهل سال به دست فلسطینیها گرفتار نمود.2-3روزی فرشتهٔ خداوند بر همسر مانوح از قبيلهٔ دان كه در شهر صرعه زندگی میكرد ظاهر شد. اين زن، نازا بود و فرزندی نداشت، اما فرشته به او گفت: «هر چند تا به حال نازا بودهای، ولی بزودی حامله شده، پسری خواهی زاييد.4مواظب باش شراب و مسكرات ننوشی و چيز حرام و ناپاک نخوری.5موی سر پسرت هرگز نبايد تراشيده شود، چون او نذيره[1] بوده، از بدو تولد وقف خدا خواهد بود. او شروع به رهانيدن اسرائیلیها از دست فلسطینیها خواهد كرد.» (Nu 6:1)6آن زن با شتاب پيش شوهرش رفت و به او گفت: «مرد خدايی به من ظاهر شد كه صورتش مانند فرشتهٔ خدا مهيب بود. من نام و نشانش را نپرسيدم و او هم اسم خود را به من نگفت.7اما گفت كه من صاحب پسری خواهم شد. او همچنين به من گفت كه نبايد شراب و مسكرات بنوشم و چيز حرام و ناپاكی بخورم؛ زيرا كودک نذيره بوده، از شكم مادر تا دم مرگ وقف خدا خواهد بود!»8آنگاه مانوح چنين دعا كرد: «ای خداوند، خواهش میكنم تو آن مرد خدا را دوباره نزد ما بفرستی تا او به ما ياد دهد با فرزندی كه به ما میبخشی چه كنيم.»9خدا دعای وی را اجابت فرمود و فرشتهٔ خدا بار ديگر بر زن او كه در صحرا نشسته بود، ظاهر شد. اين بار هم شوهرش مانوح نزد وی نبود.10پس او دويده، به شوهرش گفت: «آن مردی كه به من ظاهر شده بود، باز هم آمده است!»11مانوح بشتاب همراه همسرش نزد آن مرد آمده، از او پرسيد: «آيا تو همان مردی هستی كه با زن من صحبت كرده بودی؟» فرشته گفت: «بلی.»12پس مانوح از او پرسيد: «بعد از تولد بچه چگونه بايد او را بزرگ كنيم؟»13-14فرشته جواب داد: «زن تو بايد از آنچه كه او را منع كردم، پرهيز كند. او نبايد از محصول درخت انگور بخورد يا شراب و مسكرات بنوشد. او همچنين نبايد چيز حرام و ناپاک بخورد. او بايد هر چه به او امر كردهام بجا آورد.»15آنگاه مانوح به فرشته گفت: «خواهش میكنم همين جا بمان تا بروم و برايت غذايی بياورم.»16فرشته جواب داد: «در اينجا منتظر میمانم، ولی چيزی نمیخورم. اگر میخواهی چيزی بياوری، هديهای بياور كه به عنوان قربانی سوختنی به خداوند تقديم گردد.» (مانوح هنوز نمیدانست كه او فرشتهٔ خداوند است.)17سپس مانوح اسم او را پرسيده، گفت: «وقتی هر آنچه گفتهای واقع گردد میخواهيم به مردم بگوييم كه چه كسی اين پيشگويی را كرده است!»18فرشته گفت: «نام مرا نپرس، زيرا نام عجيبی است!»19پس مانوح بزغاله و هديهای از آرد گرفته، آن را روی قربانگاهی سنگی به خداوند تقديم كرد و فرشته عمل عجيبی انجام داد.20-21وقتی شعلههای آتش قربانگاه به سوی آسمان زبانه كشيد فرشته در شعلهٔ آتش به آسمان صعود نمود! مانوح و زنش با ديدن اين واقعه رو بر زمين نهادند و مانوح فهميد كه او فرشتهٔ خداوند بوده است. اين آخرين باری بود كه آنها او را ديدند.22مانوح به همسر خود گفت: «ما خواهيم مرد، زيرا خدا را ديديم!»23ولی زنش به او گفت: «اگر خداوند میخواست ما را بكشد هديه و قربانی ما را قبول نمیكرد، اين وعدهٔ عجيب را به ما نمیداد و اين كار عجيب را به عمل نمیآورد.»24آن زن پسری به دنیا آورد و او را«سامسون» نام نهاد. او رشد كرد و بزرگ شد و خداوند او را بركت داد.25هر وقت كه سامسون به لشكرگاه دان كه بين صرعه و اِشتائُل قرار داشت میرفت، روح خداوند وی را به غيرت میآورد.
