1Now there was a Pharisee, a man named Nicodemus who was a member of the Jewish ruling council.2He came to Jesus at night and said, ‘Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no-one could perform the signs you are doing if God were not with him.’3Jesus replied, ‘Very truly I tell you, no-one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.[1]’4‘How can someone be born when they are old?’ Nicodemus asked. ‘Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother’s womb to be born!’5Jesus answered, ‘Very truly I tell you, no-one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit.6Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit[2] gives birth to spirit.7You should not be surprised at my saying, “You[3] must be born again.”8The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.’[4]9‘How can this be?’ Nicodemus asked.10‘You are Israel’s teacher,’ said Jesus, ‘and do you not understand these things?11Very truly I tell you, we speak of what we know, and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony.12I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things?13No-one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven – the Son of Man.[5]14Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up,[6]15that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him.’[7]16For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.17For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.18Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.19This is the verdict: light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil.20Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed.21But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.
John testifies again about Jesus
22After this, Jesus and his disciples went out into the Judean countryside, where he spent some time with them, and baptised.23Now John also was baptising at Aenon near Salim, because there was plenty of water, and people were coming and being baptised.24(This was before John was put in prison.)25An argument developed between some of John’s disciples and a certain Jew over the matter of ceremonial washing.26They came to John and said to him, ‘Rabbi, that man who was with you on the other side of the Jordan – the one you testified about – look, he is baptising, and everyone is going to him.’27To this John replied, ‘A person can receive only what is given them from heaven.28You yourselves can testify that I said, “I am not the Messiah but am sent ahead of him.”29The bride belongs to the bridegroom. The friend who attends the bridegroom waits and listens for him, and is full of joy when he hears the bridegroom’s voice. That joy is mine, and it is now complete.30He must become greater; I must become less.’[8]31The one who comes from above is above all; the one who is from the earth belongs to the earth, and speaks as one from the earth. The one who comes from heaven is above all.32He testifies to what he has seen and heard, but no-one accepts his testimony.33Whoever has accepted it has certified that God is truthful.34For the one whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God[9] gives the Spirit without limit.35The Father loves the Son and has placed everything in his hands.36Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on them.

1-2يک شب، يكی از روحانيون بزرگ يهود برای گفت و شنود نزد عيسی آمد. نام او نيقوديموس و از فرقهء فريسیها بود. نيقوديموس به عيسی گفت: «استاد، ما روحانيون اين شهر، همه میدانيم كه شما از طرف خدا برای هدايت ما آمدهايد. معجزاتتان نشان میدهد كه خدا با شماست.»3عيسی جواب داد: «اگر تولد تازه پيدا نكنی، هرگز نمیتوانی ملكوت خدا را ببينی. اين كه میگويم عين حقيقت است.»4نيقوديموس با تعجب گفت: «منظورتان از تولد تازه چيست؟ چگونه امكان دارد پيرمردی مثل من، به شكم مادرش بازگردد و دوباره متولد شود؟»5عيسی جواب داد: «آنچه میگويم عين حقيقت است. تا كسی از آب و روح تولد نيابد، نمیتواند وارد ملكوت خدا شود.6زندگی جسمانی را انسان توليد میكند، ولی زندگی روحانی را روح خدا از بالا میبخشد.7پس تعجب نكن كه گفتم بايد تولد تازه پيدا كنی.8درست همانگونه كه صدای باد را میشنوی ولی نمیتوانی بگويی از كجا میآيد و به كجا میرود، در مورد تولد تازه نيز انسان نمیتواند پی ببرد كه روح خدا آن را چگونه عطا میكند.»9نيقوديموس پرسيد: «منظورتان چيست؟ من سخنان شما را به درستی درک نمیكنم.»10عيسی جواب داد: «نيقوديموس، تو از علمای دينی اسرائيل هستی؛ چگونه اين چيزها را درک نمیكنی؟11براستی من آنچه را كه میدانم و ديدهام میگويم ولی تو نمیتوانی باور كنی.12من از امور اين دنيا با تو سخن میگويم و تو باور نمیكنی. پس اگر از امور آسمان با تو صحبت كنم چگونه باور خواهی كرد؟13چون فقط من كه مسيح هستم از آسمان به اين جهان آمدهام و باز هم به آسمان باز میگردم.14-15همانگونه كه موسی در بيابان مجسمه مار مفرغی را بر چوبی آويزان كرد تا مردم به آن نگاه كنند و از مرگ نجات يابند، من نيز بايد بر صليب آويخته شوم تا مردم به من ايمان آورده، از گناه نجات پيدا كنند و زندگی جاويد بيابند.16زيرا خدا به قدری مردم جهان را دوست دارد كه يگانه فرزند خود را فرستاده است، تا هر كه به او ايمان آورد، هلاک نشود بلكه زندگی جاويد بيابد.17خدا فرزند خود را فرستاده است نه برای اينكه مردم را محكوم كند بلكه بهوسیلهٔ او نجاتشان دهد.18«كسانی كه به او ايمان بياورند، هيچ نوع محكوميت و هلاكتی در انتظارشان نيست؛ ولی كسانی كه به او ايمان نياورند، از هم اكنون محكومند، چون به يگانه فرزند خدا ايمان نياوردهاند.19محكوميت بیايمانان به اين دليل است كه نور از آسمان به اين جهان آمد ولی مردم تاريكی را بيشتر از نور دوست داشتند، چون اعمال و رفتارشان بد است.20مردم از نور آسمانی نفرت دارند، چون میخواهند در تاريكی، گناه ورزند؛ پس به نور نزديک نمیشوند، مبادا كارهای گناهآلودشان ديده شود و به سزای اعمالشان برسند.21ولی درستكاران با شادی به سوی نور میآيند تا همه ببينند كه آنچه میكنند، پسنديدهٔ خداست.»
عيسی و يحيی
22پس از آن، عيسی با شاگردان خود از اورشليم بيرون رفت، اما مدتی در ايالت يهوديه به سر برد و مردم را غسل تعميد میداد.23يحيی در اين هنگام نزديک ساليم در محلی به اسم عينون مردم را غسل تعميد میداد، چون در آنجا آب زياد بود و مردم برای تعميد نزد وی میآمدند.24اين قبل از زندانی يحيی بود.25روزی، يک يهودی با شاگردان يحيی بر سر طهارت به بحث پرداخت.26شاگردان يحيی نزد او آمدند و گفتند: «استاد، آن شخصی كه آن طرف رود اردن بود و گفتی كه مسيح است، اكنون او نيز مردم را غسل تعميد میدهد و همه نزد او میروند، در صورتی كه بايد پيش ما بيايند.»27يحيی جواب داد: «كار هر کس را خدا از آسمان تعيين میكند.28كار من اين است كه راه را برای مسيح باز كنم تا مردم همه نزد او بروند. شما خود شاهديد كه من صريحاً گفتم كه مسيح نيستم، بلكه آمدهام تا راه را برای او باز كنم.29در يک عروسی، عروس پيش داماد میرود و دوست داماد در شادی او شريک میشود. من نيز دوست دامادم و از خوشی داماد خوشحالم.30او بايد روزبهروز بزرگتر شود و من كوچكتر.31«او از آسمان آمده و مقامش از همه بالاتر است. من از اين زمين هستم و فقط امور زمينی را درک میكنم.32او آنچه را كه ديده و شنيده است میگويد ولی عدهٔ كمی سخنان او را باور میكنند.33-34كسانی كه به او ايمان میآورند، پی میبرند كه خدا سرچشمهٔ راستی است، چون اين شخص كه از طرف خداست كلام خدا را میگويد، زيرا روح خداوند به فراوانی در اوست.35پدر آسمانی ما خدا، او را دوست دارد، چون او فرزند خداست و خدا همه چيز را در اختيار او قرار داده است.36خدا كسانی را كه به فرزند او ايمان آورند، نجات میدهد و زندگی جاويد نصيبشان میسازد. ولی كسانی كه به او ايمان نياورند و از او اطاعت نكنند، هرگز به حضور خدا راه نخواهند يافت، بلكه گرفتار خشم او خواهند شد.»
