1When he had finished praying, Jesus left with his disciples and crossed the Kidron Valley. On the other side there was a garden, and he and his disciples went into it.2Now Judas, who betrayed him, knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with his disciples.3So Judas came to the garden, guiding a detachment of soldiers and some officials from the chief priests and the Pharisees. They were carrying torches, lanterns and weapons.4Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to him, went out and asked them, ‘Who is it you want?’5‘Jesus of Nazareth,’ they replied. ‘I am he,’ Jesus said. (And Judas the traitor was standing there with them.)6When Jesus said, ‘I am he,’ they drew back and fell to the ground.7Again he asked them, ‘Who is it you want?’ ‘Jesus of Nazareth,’ they said.8Jesus answered, ‘I told you that I am he. If you are looking for me, then let these men go.’9This happened so that the words he had spoken would be fulfilled: ‘I have not lost one of those you gave me.’ (Joh 6:39)10Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, cutting off his right ear. (The servant’s name was Malchus.)11Jesus commanded Peter, ‘Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me?’12Then the detachment of soldiers with its commander and the Jewish officials arrested Jesus. They bound him13and brought him first to Annas, who was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest that year.14Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jewish leaders that it would be good if one man died for the people.
Peter’s first denial
15Simon Peter and another disciple were following Jesus. Because this disciple was known to the high priest, he went with Jesus into the high priest’s courtyard,16but Peter had to wait outside at the door. The other disciple, who was known to the high priest, came back, spoke to the servant-girl on duty there and brought Peter in.17‘You aren’t one of this man’s disciples too, are you?’ she asked Peter. He replied, ‘I am not.’18It was cold, and the servants and officials stood round a fire they had made to keep warm. Peter also was standing with them, warming himself.
The high priest questions Jesus
19Meanwhile, the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching.20‘I have spoken openly to the world,’ Jesus replied. ‘I always taught in synagogues or at the temple, where all the Jews come together. I said nothing in secret.21Why question me? Ask those who heard me. Surely they know what I said.’22When Jesus said this, one of the officials near by slapped him in the face. ‘Is this the way you answer the high priest?’ he demanded.23‘If I said something wrong,’ Jesus replied, ‘testify as to what is wrong. But if I spoke the truth, why did you strike me?’24Then Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.
Peter’s second and third denials
25Meanwhile, Simon Peter was still standing there warming himself. So they asked him, ‘You aren’t one of his disciples too, are you?’ He denied it, saying, ‘I am not.’26One of the high priest’s servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, challenged him, ‘Didn’t I see you with him in the garden?’27Again Peter denied it, and at that moment a cock began to crow.
Jesus before Pilate
28Then the Jewish leaders took Jesus from Caiaphas to the palace of the Roman governor. By now it was early morning, and to avoid ceremonial uncleanness they did not enter the palace, because they wanted to be able to eat the Passover.29So Pilate came out to them and asked, ‘What charges are you bringing against this man?’30‘If he were not a criminal,’ they replied, ‘we would not have handed him over to you.’31Pilate said, ‘Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law.’ ‘But we have no right to execute anyone,’ they objected.32This took place to fulfil what Jesus had said about the kind of death he was going to die.33Pilate then went back inside the palace, summoned Jesus and asked him, ‘Are you the king of the Jews?’34‘Is that your own idea,’ Jesus asked, ‘or did others talk to you about me?’35‘Am I a Jew?’ Pilate replied. ‘Your own people and chief priests handed you over to me. What is it you have done?’36Jesus said, ‘My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders. But now my kingdom is from another place.’37‘You are a king, then!’ said Pilate. Jesus answered, ‘You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.’38‘What is truth?’ retorted Pilate. With this he went out again to the Jews gathered there and said, ‘I find no basis for a charge against him.39But it is your custom for me to release to you one prisoner at the time of the Passover. Do you want me to release “the king of the Jews”?’40They shouted back, ‘No, not him! Give us Barabbas!’ Now Barabbas had taken part in an uprising.

دستگيری و محاكمهٔ عيسی
1پس از پايان دعا، عيسی با شاگردانش به يک باغ زيتون واقع در آن سوس درهٔ «قدرون» رفت.2يهودای خائن نيز آن محل را میشناخت، زيرا عيسی و شاگردانش بارها در آنجا گرد آمده بودند.3پس يهودا به همراه سربازان و محافظين مخصوص خانهٔ خدا كه كاهنان اعظم و فريسيان در اختيارش گذاشته بودند، با اسلحه و مشعلها و چراغها وارد باغ شدند.4عيسی با اينكه میدانست چه سرنوشتی در انتظار اوست، جلو رفت و از ايشان پرسيد: «چه كسی را میخواهيد؟»5جواب دادند: «عيسای ناصری!» عيسی فرمود: «من خودم هستم!» وقتی عيسی اين را میگفت يهودا نيز آنجا ايستاده بود.6به محض اينكه گفت من خودم هستم، همه عقبعقب رفتند و بر زمين افتادند.7عيسی باز از ايشان پرسيد: «چه كسی را میخواهيد؟» باز جواب دادند: «عيسای ناصری را.»8فرمود: «من كه گفتم خودم هستم. اگر مرا میخواهيد، بگذاريد اينها بروند.»9او اين كار را كرد تا مطابق دعای آن شب خود عمل كرده باشد كه فرمود: «تمام كسانی را كه به من سپردی حفظ كردم به طوری كه هيچيک از دست نرفت.»10در همين وقت، شمعون پطرس شمشير خود را كشيد و گوش راست«ملوک» خدمتكار كاهن اعظم را بريد.11عيسی به پطرس فرمود: «شمشيرت را غلاف كن. آيا جامی را كه پدرم به من داده است، نبايد بنوشم؟»
حنا از عيسی بازجويی میکند
12آنگاه سربازان و فرماندهان و محافظين مخصوص، عيسی را گرفتند و دستهای او را بستند،13و او را نخست نزد«حنا»، پدر زن«قيافا» كه كاهن اعظم آن سال بود، بردند.14قيافا همان است كه به سران قوم يهود گفت: «بهتر است اين يک نفر فدای همه شود.»
نخستين انکار پطرس
15شمعون پطرس و يک شاگرد ديگر نيز دنبال عيسی رفتند. آن شاگرد با كاهن اعظم آشنا بود، پس توانست دنبال عيسی داخل خانهٔ كاهن اعظم شود.16ولی پطرس پشت در ماند، تا اينكه آن شاگرد ديگر آمد و با كنيزی كه دربان آنجا بود، گفتگو كرد و پطرس را با خود به داخل خانه برد.17آن كنيز از پطرس پرسيد: «آيا تو از شاگردان عيسی هستی؟» جواب داد: «نه، نيستم.»18بيرون، هوا سرد بود. پس خدمتكاران و مأموران، آتشی درست كردند و دور آن جمع شدند. پطرس نيز به ميان ايشان رفت تا خود را گرم كند.
کاهن اعظم از عيسی بازجويی میکند
19در داخل، كاهن اعظم، از عيسی دربارهٔ شاگردان و تعاليم او سؤالاتی كرد.20عيسی جواب داد: «همه میدانند كه من چه تعليمی میدهم. آشكارا در عبادتگاهها و خانهٔ خدا موعظه كردهام؛ تمام سران قوم سخنان مرا شنيدهاند و به كسی مخفيانه چيزی نگفتهام.21چرا اين سؤال را از من میكنی؟ از كسانی بپرس كه سخنانم را شنيدهاند. عدهای از ايشان اينجا حاضرند و میدانند من چه گفتهام.»22وقتی اين را گفت، يكی از سربازان كه آنجا ايستاده بود، به عيسی سيلی زد و گفت: «به كاهن اعظم اينطور جواب میدهی؟»23عيسی جواب داد: «اگر سخنی ناراست گفتهام، آن را ثابت كن. ولی اگر سخنم راست است، چرا سيلی میزنی؟»24سپس«حنا» عيسی را دست بسته، نزد«قيافا» فرستاد كه او نيز كاهن اعظم بود.
دومين و سومين انکار پطرس
25در حالی كه شمعون پطرس در كنار آتش ايستاده بود و خود را گرم میكرد، يک نفر ديگر از او پرسيد: «تو از شاگردان او نيستی؟» جواب داد: «البته كه نيستم.»26يكی از خدمتكاران كاهن اعظم كه از خويشان كسی بود كه پطرس گوشش را بريده بود، گفت: «مگر من خودم تو را در باغ با عيسی نديدم؟»27باز پطرس حاشا كرد. همان لحظه خروس بانگ زد.
محاکمه عيسی در حضور پيلاطوس
28نزديک صبح، بازجويی از عيسی تمام شد. پس قيافا او را به كاخ فرماندار رومی فرستاد. يهوديان برای اينكه نجس نشوند، داخل كاخ نشدند، چون اگر داخل میشدند ديگر نمیتوانستند در مراسم«عيد پِسَح» و مراسم قربانی شركت كنند.29پس فرماندار رومی كه نامش«پيلاطوس» بود، بيرون آمد و پرسيد: «اتهام اين شخص چيست؟ از دست او چه شكايت داريد؟»30جواب دادند: «اگر مجرم نبود، دستگيرش نمیكرديم.»31پيلاطوس گفت: «پس او را ببريد و مطابق قوانين مذهبی خودتان محاكمه كنيد.» گفتند: «ما میخواهيم او بر صليب اعدام شود و لازم است كه دستور اين كار را شما بدهيد.»32اين مطابق پيشگويی خود عيسی بود كه فرموده بود به چه ترتيبی بايد بميرد.33پيلاطوس به داخل كاخ برگشت و دستور داد عيسی را نزد او بياورند. آنگاه از او پرسيد: «آيا تو پادشاه يهود هستی؟»34عيسی پرسيد: «منظورت از ”پادشاه“ آن است كه شما رومیها میگوييد يا پادشاهی كه يهوديان منتظر ظهورش هستند؟»35پيلاطوس گفت: «مگر من يهودی هستم كه اين چيزها را از من میپرسی؟ قوم خودت و كاهنانشان تو را اينجا آوردهاند. چه كردهای؟»36عيسی فرمود: «من يک پادشاه دنيوی نيستم. اگر بودم، پيروانم میجنگيدند تا در چنگ سران قوم يهود گرفتار نشوم. پادشاهی من متعلق به اين دنيا نيست.»37پيلاطوس پرسيد: «به هر حال منظورت اين است كه تو پادشاهی؟» عيسی فرمود: «بلی، من برای همين منظور متولد شدهام، و آمدهام تا حقيقت را به دنيا بياورم؛ و تمام كسانی كه حقيقت را دوست دارند از من پيروی میكنند.»38پيلاطوس گفت: «حقيقت چيست؟» سپس بيرون رفت و به مردم گفت: «او هيچ جرمی مرتكب نشده است؛39ولی رسم اينست كه در هر ”عيد پِسَح“ يک زندانی را برای شما آزاد كنم. اگر بخواهيد، حاضرم ”پادشاه يهود“ را آزاد كنم.»40ولی مردم فرياد زدند: «نه، او را نمیخواهيم. باراباس را میخواهيم!» (باراباس راهزن بود.)
